GB2RS News Sunday the 8th of February 2026 The news headlines: RSGB member-exclusive DDS programming workshop in Blackpool What are your British Science Week plans? Submit your RSGB 2026 Convention ideas As part of the Society's strategy to support radio amateurs in developing their practical skills, the RSGB will be running a DDS programming workshop in Blackpool on Saturday, the 11th of April, the day before the NARSA Rally. The six-hour workshop, which was first run at the RSGB 2025 Convention, is intended for RSGB members who already have a basic knowledge of Arduino programming. Attendees will learn how to control and program a Direct Digital Synthesiser using a microcontroller and will use this to generate RF. As well as covering the maths behind the programming process, attendees will also gain an insight into vibe coding. So, if 2026 is the year you want to take your programming skills up a notch, this is the event for you. For full information and booking details, visit rsgb.org/practical-events This year's British Science Week runs from the 6th to the 15th of March with ‘Curiosity: what's your question?' as its theme. Several clubs, youth groups and schools have already planned events and activities, and the RSGB's team of Champions are working together to deliver more. You can take part by trying one of the great activity suggestions that the RSGB has on its website. You could get your local WI, Men in Sheds group, school or youth groups or even your own family involved. If you have your own ideas, let the RSGB know; they don't need to be ‘grand', simply demonstrating the magic of radio is enough. Another way to get involved with British Science Week is by taking part in a sked, which is a pre-arranged radio contact with another radio operator at a scheduled time and on a particular frequency. The RSGB National Radio Centre is offering groups and clubs the opportunity to arrange a sked and get its sought-after GB3RS callsign into the logbook. To take part in this unique offering, go to rsgb.org/bsw  and select ‘Events happening near you' from the right-hand menu. Contacts must be arranged in advance and would take place between 10 am and 4 pm during British Science Week. The CQ World Wide WPX RTTY Contest starts at 0000UTC on Saturday, the 14th and ends at 2359UTC on Sunday, the 15th of February. The PACC Contest starts at 1200UTC on Saturday, the 14th of February and runs until 1200 UTC on Sunday, the 15th of February. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 5th of February Last week was characterised by a high solar flux index but with a succession of X-class solar flares from active region 4366 on the Sun. Luckily, none of these resulted in a coronal mass ejection, so we got away lightly. The solar flux index stood at 178 on Tuesday, the 3rd of February, with the result that the 10m band was humming. US states logged included Oregon, Nevada, California, Washington and Idaho, all between 1530 and 1730UTC. As we always say, look for a high solar flux index and a low Kp index for DX – in this case, a Kp index of between 1 and 2.33. By comparison, the next day was a washout, possibly thanks to a Kp index increase to 3.67, thanks to a coronal mass ejection, or CME, that passed Earth at 1506UTC. Poor conditions continued on Thursday, the 5th, when the solar wind speed increased to more than 500 kilometres per second, the Kp index increased to 5.33, and maximum usable frequencies across a 3,000km path struggled to exceed 20MHz. Incidentally, February and March are good months for 10m band paths to the US. By April, paths start to drop away and start favouring South America, so if you need US states for your Worked All States award, now is the right time! In the meantime, keep an eye on active region 4366 as it may still have a sting in its tail. This monstrous sunspot group, 15 times the width of Earth, was Earth-centric on Thursday, the 5th. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will be in the 130 to 150 range, although the Kp index might be unsettled at times, with an average Kp index of 3. Friday, the 13th of February, is forecast to be particularly unsettled with a Kp index of 5. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The markedly unsettled weather pattern continues to bring a mix of rain and showers and very strong winds at times, plus the threat of snowfall in some eastern and northern areas. This probably means that tropo will be hard to find during the coming week but leaves us with plenty of chances for rain scatter for GHz operators. In the solar-terrestrial domain, the disturbed Sun has once again brought a sequence of flares and coronal mass ejections, or CMEs, which has provided frequent auroral alerts as the Kp index has climbed to 4 or more. Listen for fluttery signals on the LF bands and perhaps ghostly sounding signals on HF and VHF, typically 10m to 2m.  Meteor scatter operators must rely upon random meteor activity, but over the whole Earth, this can amount to 25 million meteors or meteoroids per day, so there is every chance that even random activity could produce a path for you if you have a quiet site.  The mix of meteor activity and a low Kp index can lead to out-of-season Sporadic-E, given some jet stream weather activity. However, this is currently well south of the Mediterranean in its usual winter position, so any Sporadic-E may be a bit too far south to reach from the UK in the short term. This week, Moon declination is negative all week and falling until Thursday, the 12th of February. Moon window length and peak elevation follow suit. Path losses are rising again as we reach apogee, the Moon's furthest point from Earth, on Tuesday, the 10th of February. 144MHz sky noise is low but rising to high by Thursday, the 12th of February. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

 Port Haller to nowa inicjatywa Prawa i Sprawiedliwości zakładająca budowę pełnomorskiego portu Ro-Ro (czyli naczep drogowych, pojazdów kołowych oraz jednostek wojskowych) na Bałtyku. Ma on powstać w Choczewie, w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie planowanej pierwszej polskiej elektrowni jądrowej. Port wypełniłby lukę w systemie transportowym i obronnym kraju.Inwestycja ma zapewnić Polsce dostęp do dwóch nowych korytarzy handlowych: bałtycko-czarnomorskiego oraz adriatycko-bałtyckiego, które – według zapowiedzi – mają być gotowe w ciągu najbliższych pięciu lat. Jednocześnie port ma pełnić funkcję bezpiecznej bramy dla przerzutu wojsk sojuszniczych NATO, pozostając poza zasięgiem rosyjskiej artylerii dalekiego zasięgu z Obwodu Królewieckiego i w obszarze działania bazy antyrakietowej w Redzikowo.O szczegółach tej koncepcji w Poranku Radia Wnet mówił Arkadiusz Szyszka, wieloletni pracownik infrastruktury portowej i energetycznej oraz analityk. Zdaniem Szyszki, kluczowe jest to, że infrastruktura portowa w Choczewie i tak powstanie – niezależnie od politycznych deklaracji.Zanim przejdziemy dalej: w Choczewie buduje się elektrownię jądrową. Żeby ją wybudować, trzeba przywieźć olbrzymie elementy konstrukcji – generatory, piece, bardzo duże gabaryty. Do tego potrzebny jest terminal. I w ramach tej budowy taki terminal już powstaje, budowany przez Urząd Morski w Gdyni– wyjaśnia.Jak dodaje, terminal oznacza w praktyce nabrzeże, falochron, drogę i linię kolejową, czyli pełną podstawę do obsługi dużych ładunków.To jest tak naprawdę nabrzeże, przy którym statek może zacumować i się rozładować, do tego falochron, żeby się nie bujał, droga i kolej. Gdynia po prostu nie ma hektarów – port jest zamknięty przez miasto– podkreśla.Zdaniem Szyszki, Choczewo daje przestrzeń, której brakuje w istniejących portach, a jednocześnie wpisuje się w europejskie korytarze transportowe łączące Skandynawię z południem kontynentu.Tu się włączają transeuropejskie projekty transportowe. Turcja, Grecja, południe Europy – tam się bardzo dużo buduje. Te korytarze mają łączyć Skandynawię z Adriatykiem i Morzem Egejskim– wskazuje.Rozmówca Radia Wnet zwraca też uwagę na aspekt militarny inwestycji.To jest port na uboczu, łatwy do ochrony. Gdyby zostawić ruch pasażerski w Trójmieście, a ładunki stricte przemysłowe i wojskowe przenieść do Choczewa, to z punktu widzenia logistyki i bezpieczeństwa to jest rewelacja– ocenia.Choć PiS jest dziś w opozycji, Szyszka przekonuje, że sama infrastruktura i tak zostanie zbudowana.On powstanie tak czy siak. Może nie będzie się nazywał Haller, ale będzie nabrzeże, będzie droga i będzie falochron. Pytanie tylko, czy ktoś to wykorzysta, czy to będzie stało i rdzewiało– mówi.Nowy port mógłby też zmienić układ sił na Bałtyku.W przeładunkach Ro-Ro liczy się czas. W grudniu 1970 roku Gdańsk i Gdynia stały się areną buntu przeciw podwyżkom cen żywności ogłoszonym przez rząd PRL. 14 grudnia strajk rozpoczęli pracownicy Stoczni Gdańskiej im. Lenina, a dzień później dołączyła Stocznia im. Komuny Paryskiej. Wśród protestujących był 17‑letni Gerard Andrzej Thrun, uczeń szkoły okrętowej, który wspomina odwagę robotników i ogromną społeczną wrogość wobec systemu. Najtragiczniejszy okazał się 17 grudnia, Czarny Czwartek, gdy wojsko i milicja użyły broni, gazu i helikopterów. Thrun cudem uniknął śmierci, widząc obok siebie postrzelonego rówieśnika. Strajki objęły także Szczecin, Słupsk i Elbląg. Oficjalnie zginęło 45 osób, lecz liczby te mogły być zaniżone. Jak wyglądały nocne pogrzeby ofiar Grudnia 70? Jak strajki komentowały ówczesne władze PRL? I jak strajki wpłynęły na sierpień 1980 roku? Mimo to mordercy nie udaje się zidentyfikować. –  To było nie tylko mycie pokładu, jak to się najczęściej pokazuje, ale ciężka praca z żaglami. Przy zmiennych wiatrach trzeba było bez przerwy je nastawiać, poluźniać, napinać… –  opowiada o prof. W Szczecinie, niegdyś kluczowym porcie Królestwa Prus, rozmawiamy o życiu bałtyckich marynarzy w nowożytności.Marynarze wypływający Szczecina i innych pomorskich portów raczej nie pływali daleko. Najczęstsze były trasy po Bałtyku (kilka dni np. do Kopenhagi lub Sztokholmu), po Morzu Północnym (np. do Amsterdamu), najdalej zahaczano o Atlantyk na trasie do Bordeaux. Praca marynarza była sezonowa, z przerwą zimową mniej więcej od połowy listopada do początku lutego.Żeglarstwo uważano za cech, zresztą jeden z bardziej otwartych. – Jak na cechy i ograniczenia cechowe w miastach nowożytnych to była dosyć otwarta droga – opowiada historyk. Marynarzem mógł zostać nawet prosty rybak. Ważna była siła fizyczna i brak lęku wysokości. Jeśli marynarz miał dodatkowo jakieś uzdolnienia, tym lepiej. Dobrze gotujący mógł zostać na statku kucharzem i uniknąć ciężkich prac na pokładzie (ale odpowiadał za ewentualny pożar). Była też ścieżka awansu: pomocnik sternika, sternik, szyper, czyli odpowiednik kapitana. Szyper musiał już umieć czytać i pisać (po niemiecku, w głównym języku morskich miast hanzeatyckich), zdawał też egzamin przed lożą szyprów.Skoro rejsy krótkie, to nie groził marynarzom szkorbut czy wysadzenie na bezludnej wyspie. Ale Bałtyk też miał swoje niespodzianki. To płytkie morze, przez co łatwo było się rozbić o ląd nawet przy wchodzeniu do portu, a podczas sztormów szalały krótkie, niebezpieczne fale. –  Wybrzeża Bałtyku, nawet południowego, są usiane wrakami statków. Tych zatonięć było sporo – mówi historyk.Szyper był odpowiedzialny za przewożony ładunek: jeśli był źle zabezpieczony i zniszczył się, zamókł lub utonął, odpowiadał przed wynajmującym go kupcem. Trzeba było też uważać na floty kaperskie, półpiratów wynajmowanych przez… władców państw bałtyckich. Oni spotkali się z oporem szlachty, która w silnej flocie widziała niebezpieczne wzmocnienie władzy królewskiej. – Szlachta zupełnie nie rozumiała morza – opowiada prof. TRIBUTO: HISTORIAS QUE CONSTRUYEN MEMORIA DE LA SHOÁ, CON CECILIA LEVIT – Tova Friedman nació en Gdynia, Polonia en septiembre de 1938. Su padre era el propietario de un exitoso negocio de sastrería. Los nazis invaden la ciudad el 28 de septiembre de 1939 y Tova, con tan solo un año, fue deportada junto a sus padres al gueto de la ciudad. La Caída del Temido Buque Insignia Nazi El acorazado alemán Bismarck fue uno de los buques de guerra más famosos y temidos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Su construcción se inició en 1936 y se completó en 1940, como parte del plan de rearme naval de la Alemania nazi. El Bismarck tenía una eslora de 251 metros, un desplazamiento de más de 50.000 toneladas y una potencia de fuego impresionante, con ocho cañones de 380 milímetros y doce de 150 milímetros, entre otros armamentos. Su velocidad máxima era de 30 nudos (unos 55 kilómetros por hora). El Bismarck realizó su única misión operativa en mayo de 1941, cuando zarpó desde el puerto de Gotenhafen (actual Gdynia, en Polonia) junto con el crucero pesado Prinz Eugen, con el objetivo de atacar los convoyes aliados que transportaban suministros desde América del Norte a Gran Bretaña. Esta operación se denominó Rheinübung (Ejercicio del Rin) y estaba bajo el mando del almirante Günther Lütjens. El 20 de mayo, el Bismarck y el Prinz Eugen entraron en el estrecho de Dinamarca, entre Islandia y Groenlandia, donde se encontraron con dos buques británicos: el crucero de batalla Hood y el acorazado Prince of Wales. Se produjo un breve pero intenso combate naval, en el que el Bismarck hundió al Hood con un solo disparo y dañó al Prince of Wales, que tuvo que retirarse. El Bismarck también sufrió algunos impactos, pero pudo continuar su ruta hacia el Atlántico. Sin embargo, el Bismarck no pudo escapar del seguimiento de la Royal Navy, que movilizó a toda su flota para darle caza. El 24 de mayo, un avión británico logró localizar al Bismarck y lanzarle un torpedo que averió su timón, impidiéndole maniobrar correctamente. The event also sees Mike Reilly, aka the ‘Voice of IRONMAN', calling his final North America event of his career.   Race day will see 55 age group qualifying slots, and an 100 extra slots for female athletes, for the 2023 VinFast IRONMAN World Championship taking place on October 12 & 14, 2023 in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i.   The course will take athletes along a 2.4-mile swim in Salt River, a 112-mile bike along the Beeline Highway, and a 26.2-mile run through Tempe and along the Salt River, finishing at Tempe Beach Park.   Ben Kanute (USA) will make his full-distance IRONMAN debut following a runner-up position at the 2022 Intermountain Healthcare IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship presented by Utah Sports Commission.   US athletes, Sam Long, Matt Hanson and Chris Leiferman, will challenge for a podium spot along with Great Britain's Joe Skipper and South Africa's Kyle Buckingham. If you haven't got it on your phone already, where have you been?!   IRONMAN Arizona Pro Men A dominant winner at IRONMAN Wales and a career-best fifth at the IRONMAN World Championship suggests that Great Britain's Joe Skipper will arguably start as favourite, in what is a deep start list in Tempe. Big races in September, October and November might be considered sub-optimal for many, but based on history at least, there's little reason to believe that the Brit won't be physically and mentally ready to perform at his best, once again.   Looking back to 2019 for example, sixth in Kona was followed just over three weeks later by a fantastic victory at IRONMAN Florida, capped off with a 2:39 marathon. Success in back-to-back racing has proven to work for the six-time IRONMAN champion time after time. Even last year, he was totally dominant at IRONMAN Chattanooga, three weeks after second place IRONMAN Switzerland. He put on a brilliant show at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, taking a second silver medal at the championship. Strong across all disciplines, he should be at the front of the race for much of the day.   Ben Kanute 2nd at IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2022 Photo: Patrick McDermott/Getty Images for IRONMAN When you then add Matt Hanson, Chris Leiferman, Kristian Hogenhaug, Bart Aernouts, Justin Metzler and plenty more into the mix, then the way that racing has been going over the last few years, you have to think that the course record figures of Lionel Sanders (7:44:29 from 2016), will be under threat.   You can be sure that Great Britain's Andrew Horsfall-Turner will be pushing the pace in the water from the get-go – and with Kanute likely wanting to be a part of that too, that would benefit the man from Wales too.   Pro Women The USA's Skye Moench (#10) is the PTO's top-ranked female professional set to race in Tempe, a race where she has previously finished 11th (2016) and fourth (2018). A winner this year at Eagleman 70.3 and IRONMAN Lake Placid, the two-time Olympian now juggles triathlon alongside being a mother and studying.   Entering Arizona with a, ‘one race, one win' history over the distance after her debut performance at IRONMAN Lanzarote, Great Britain's Lydia Dant has made rapid progress inside her first year in the Pro ranks. On the bike in particular – aided by her skills as a bike fitter – Lydia has excelled, and will be looking to make progress on that fast roads of the IRONMAN Arizona course towards the front of the race, once out of the water.   Lydia Dant - IRONMAN Lanzarote 2022 finish Photo Credit: James Mitchell for Club La Santa After finishing 10th (St George) and 12th (Kona), you can't write off the podium prospects of the consistent Maja Stage Nielsen (DEN) either. The Dane is really consistent across all three disciplines. A valuable opportunity to get the KQ box ticked well in advance.   (* Note – Joe Skipper is already qualified by virtue of his victory at IRONMAN Wales).   The total funds will be paid ten-deep, as follows: $15,000 $9,000 $7,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,000 $2,500 $2,000 $1,500 $1,000   Of course, thanks to the formation of the Professional Triathletes Organisation, financial rewards from performance are not solely from on-the-day performances, and this is one of the few 2022 races remaining to improve your ranking.   The PTO World Rankings will see a total of $2million awarded at the end of 2022, based up on the final standings in those points tables. The rewards there can be substantial, with a move up or down the rankings system potentially earning you more than any individual event.     Odyssey Alcatraz Swim this Saturday   Have you always wanted to swim from Alcatraz? You're not alone. Swimming from Alcatraz is one of the most famous, desirable, and enjoyable open water swims (wild swim) in the entire world. Despite lore that swimming from Alcatraz is dangerous, for experienced swimmers with proper support, swimming from Alcatraz can be safe and fun.   Odyssey Open Water Swimming offers a wide range of open water swims, including the world-famous Odyssey Alcatraz swim. Each swim is led by coaches and guides, and swim support is available on-hand to assist with exiting the water if needed.     2023 Alcatraz Swims: May 13, June 17, June 24, July 22, August 5, and November 4 Note: All swims are pending US Coast Guard approval. In the event that Coast Guard approval is not given for a swim, participants will be refunded in account credit.   Come join us for the ultimate Bay Area open water swim!   This event is not a race -- just a friendly swim in an exciting, safe, and comfortable environment. It is a great opportunity for those training for similar events, including the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, or people who just want an unforgettable, world-famous swimming experience!   The Alcatraz swim is an approximately 2-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. We will occasionally swim to San Francisco's Ferry Building, which takes the swimmers east instead of west, but is comparable in terms of difficulty. Check the registration site for specific course info. Regardless of course, this swim is for relatively strong swimmers. Before taking on Alcatraz, you should be able to do this distance in a pool (140 lengths of a 25-yard pool) or during our regular group open water swims in Berkeley without stopping. Feel free to contact us if you're not sure if you are up for it.   Alcatraz swims are $245 per event. There is a $50 late registration fee within one month of the swim. In addition to the swim itself, registration includes an event t-shirt, an Alcatraz Swim sticker, and a yellow silicone Alcatraz swim cap.   All Alcatraz swims will take place in the morning, usually meeting in San Francisco between 5 and 8am. After a memorable show in Krakow on the 2022 European tour, we're set to go back to Poland to cover the Heineken Open'er Festival show from 2010. The show was a day after the Berlin show from that year, which had a touching tribute to the Roskilde victims being the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. That theme was on their minds at this show as Ed has to deal with some early crowd rambunctiousness that he had nearly no patience for. This was in the middle of touring for Backspacer, so we'll be able to catch up on songs from that album for the first time in about 6 months. This is including The Fixer, where we try to make sense of the recent infatuation that blew us away after it was crossed off a setlist earlier in this tour. Great versions of Hail, Hail, Even Flow, Amongst The Waves and Rearviewmirror are all discussed, but perhaps most importantly, we get a version of Just Breathe with bass!  Joining us to tell her story is our Patron Anita Stelmasiuk who had a long journey before making it to her first show.
