Every major city with a healthy music scene will have hometown heroes….that band or artist that the locals love and wish the whole world knew about. One of those bands is Toronto's “The Lowest Of The Low”. Welcome to episode 118 of See Hear. The Lowest of the Low started in the early 90s as a follow up to the band punk band, Popular Front. Ron Hawkins had previously written overtly political songs, but for the debut album Shakespeare My Butt (one of the best album names ever), he wrote songs about ordinary people facing everyday pressures – so still political in its way. The history of the band is not an uncommon tale – friends get together based on common musical and ideological points of reference, members have “differences” and they split apart, years after the fact they reunite remembering the spark that got them started. However, their tale is still fascinating because they were true independents and were never going to sell their ideals downstream for a quick buck. Big companies came calling, but LOTL dictated terms all the way. Kerry was away, but Tim and I spoke with musician, tour manager for many Canadian bands, and film director Simon Head about his documentary “Subversives: The History of Lowest Of The Low”. As well as talking about the film, we spend time devoted to discussing the Toronto music scene of the early 90s and where it is now, friendship, Weddings Parties Anything and Billy Bragg, and Toronto as a film character.  A huge thanks to Simon for joining us. Against the backdrop of declining carbon prices and emissions levels, they explore the ripple effects for compliant entities and the impact on European industrial development. March Madness is always a time to see individual talent shine on the hardwood, but at the end of the day, it's always a team that comes together to win the day. And behind every great team is a great coach. Todd Simon has been the Head Coach for the Southern Utah University Thunderbirds since 2016. He has consistently broken school records for wins, points, and more, leading the Thunderbirds to their first Big Sky Conference win in 2020. What did it take to lead the team to their first win? Coach Simon's process of staying focused on the controlables, the “main thing” and relentless enthusiasm. Coach Simon knows what it takes to get his people motivated and focused on a goal, something that managers everywhere could learn a thing or two about. This is another episode you're not going to want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

Coach Todd Simon,In this episode, you'll hear from Todd Simon. Coach Simon is the head coach at Southern Utah University. Coach Todd is entering year six as the leader of their basketball program. Fresh off of a Big Sky Conference Championship, the reigning Big Sky Coach of the Year took 35 minutes out of his busy schedule to break down his coaching philosophies. Besides being Coach of the Year in the Big Sky, Coach Simon was honored last season as the NABC District 6 Coach of the Year. He also won the 2021 Jim Phelan Award, and was a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award and the Hugh Durham Award. In the opening minutes of this podcast, Coach Simon talks about how the goal of their program is to lead the nation in relationships. As a matter of fact, he wants he and his staff to have transformational - not transactional - relationships with all of the players in their program. As you will soon find out, Coach Todd is a breath of fresh air. To him, the mental health of his players is at the top of his list as he approaches each day. And, he is driven to make the game of basketball fun for his players. Whether it is having a team score 84 points per game or texting with his players every night about their days and their overall well-being, Coach Todd wants to make sure that his players believe that they can make the next shot. It is extraordinary to hear a head coach talk so openly about the mistakes he made in year one at the helm of his program and how he knew he had to change. It is a level of vulnerability that is extremely humbling and inspiring. Coach Todd Simon can flat out coach. Southern Utah has not lost at home in over 650 days. It is not common that you hear a coach say that “basketball is not the only thing in their players' lives." But Todd Simon is different. He is a coach that thrives on player relationships and player development. To me, it is no surprise why the kids run through a wall for him. This is the perfect listen for the holiday season.Follow Coach Todd Simon @CoachTsimonFollow Tell Me Your Story Coach @CoachKevinDro Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! 34 Alfred and Jeff in San Diego Jeff and Alfred flew into San Diego separately and then met in a small coffee shop near the First Union Bank, where Jane had stored a copy of Lisa on a quantum drive a few months ago. “How was your trip?" Jeff asked Alfred. “I’ve never ridden in an autonomous Uber before; we don’t have those yet in Mexico. They’re illegal," Alfred said. “Why are they illegal?" Jeff asked. “They were afraid all the taxi and truck drivers would lose their jobs like in California and the States," so we just didn’t let it happen, I guess," Alfred said. “Do you think anyone followed you?" Jeff asked. “I don’t see how they could have, all the way from Mexico, through Customs and two plane changes, and an Uber ride to here. And, I don’t think anyone thinks I am important, except for you guys," Alfred explained. “Ok, let’s look at a map. The bank is four blocks over. We are going to take different paths that crisscross. I will get to the first crisscross, and you should be able to see if anyone is following me on foot," Jeff explained, pointing at the map pulled up on this phone. “And you will get to the second crisscross before I do, and I will check if anyone is on foot behind you," Jeff continued. “What if someone has tapped into the video cameras that cover the streets. They are everywhere. Or they are using a satellite to follow us," Alfred asked. “Does anyone really follow anyone on foot anymore? That seems lame." “You’re right. I just want to control what I can control. Let’s just hope that we are low enough profile and that the States can’t reach into California. I’m not a big fan of government, let’s say, I lack trust." “Assuming all goes well at the bank, we both have the address of the Simon Head at the Western Plating Shop. I assume we should ride separately and make it a little harder to follow us," Jeff suggested. “I think you are being so paranoid that you are going to trigger one of the algorithms that monitor for unusual behavior," Alfred said. “I thought you used to be a spy or something? I think we should just act like nothing's wrong. You are overthinking this, Jeff. Just be cool." “Point taken. I was moved to desk jobs more than a decade ago. Most of my career was before the machines took over everything. I would have been great back in the good old days," Jeff said and then laughed. “Let’s do it," Jeff said and stood up. Alfred took the last sip of his mocha, double chocolate, and tossed it toward the trash. Nothing noticeable happened on the journey. The lawyers had already greased the wheels to minimize the problems of getting into someone else’s safety deposit box. However, the bank president still had to be called down since it was very unusual for the bank to allow anyone but the original owner to access a safety deposit box. He looked over their ID’s. Jeff had an old fashion card, and Alfred held up his phone and beamed his ID to the bank clerk. The bank escorted them into the vault and furnished both keys to open the box. The bank president and the clerk left them alone as they opened the box. It was easy to pick out what they needed; there was only one thing inside of the box, the quantum drive. It was about six inches long and four inches wide and high. Alfred wrapped it some high-tech packing bubbles and put it in his backpack and said, “let’s go." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alamo/message

To be honest, we don’t think so.Fans are the lifeblood of any sport, but when it comes to the television coverage of specific sports, certain events are able to adapt and still be compelling without fans in the stands, while others have struggled. On this week’s episode of The Brit Pack, MMA journalist Simon Head and MMA social media specialist Chamatkar Sandhu discuss how different sports have adapted to lockdown life, and how the UFC has led the way in how to host a successful behind-closed-doors event. The pair also look back at the fifth and final event of the UFC’s five-event run at their UFC Apex facility, as Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker threw leather for five thrilling rounds in a Fight of the Year contender. Simon and Sandhu also discussed the other crackerjack matchups that are on that way-too-early Fights of the Year list, six months in.It’s a gap week in the world MMA calendar, with no UFC, Bellator or ONE Championship events set for the coming weekend, but there’s plenty to digest after a packed weekend last weekend, so check out the show and get bang up to date with the Brits as they wrap up all UFC Apex matters ahead of the UFC’s switch to Fight Island next week.Check out the show via the player above, and don’t forget to subscribe! The UFC’s purpose-built “Apex” facility in Las Vegas was always intended to host live fight events, but even UFC president Dana White wouldn’t have expected to have held so many big events at the state-of-the-art venue by the summer of 2020.The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we have to think and operate, however, and the new facility has become the Las Vegas home of live fights for the UFC, with a ton of exciting matchups already in the books in the venue’s short history. This past weekend’s event, #UFCVegas3, delivered talking points aplenty, and Simon Head and Chamatkar Sandhu, AKA “The Brit Pack”, unpack it all on this week’s show. Whether it was Curtis Blaydes’ strong, yet underwhelming, performance in the main event, Josh Emmett’s Ironman performance in the co-main event, or the contrasting (and, in Max Rohskopf’s case, controversial) debuts of two UFC newcomers, there was plenty for the lads to get their teeth into as they looked back at another eventful show.Simon and Sandhu also take a look ahead to UFC on ESPN 12, as lightweight contenders Dustin Poirier and Dan Hooker get ready to face off in the main event, and also run through a host of British fighters set for action on UFC “Fight Island” at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. It’s another jam-packed show of MMA chat. What's next for Anderson Silva?

It wasn’t all that long ago that Anderson Silva was the biggest name in MMA. As the UFC’s all-conquering middleweight champion, “The Spider” demolished almost everyone in his path, and even jumped up to light heavyweight and added to his highlight reel at 205 pounds. But now, after losing his title and picking up just one win in the last seven years, Silva has just two fights remaining on his UFC contract, and UFC president Dana White admitted he’s unsure how to book the Brazilian legend for his final two fights. On this week’s episode of The Brit Pack, Simon Head and Chamatkar Sandhu mull over the possible (and highly unlikely) options for Silva’s final two fights, and also discuss what might happen if Silva’s compatriot, UFC women’s “champ champ” Amanda Nunes, decided to hang up her four-ounce gloves in the near future. The two Brits also take a look back at UFC on ESPN 10 (aka #UFCVegas2) as Cynthia Calvillo announced her arrival as a top contender in her new weight class, while a host of up-and-coming prospects delivered a fistful of spectacular performances to kick off the card. Finally, the pair look ahead to UFC on ESPN 11 (aka #UFCVegas3) as heavyweight contenders Curtis Blaydes and Alexander Volkov face off in the main event.Enjoy the show, then enjoy the fights![Photo credit: Per Haljestam] Get on the email list at thebritpack.substack.com

Erin works to drive positive change across industries by leading WWF’s packaging and material science program.  Through her efforts, she works with business and industry to help them make informed, sustainable material choices for their products and packaging. Her work focuses on the major commodities that go into packaging, which come in many different forms and materials, and how to integrate sustainability into the decisions and trade-offs that must be evaluated across a product’s lifecycle. Erin works with companies to strategically address their packaging work streams by focusing on developing transparency in the supply chain for the major packaging materials and pursuing strategies that reduce the environmental impact of these materials through responsible sourcing. Prior to joining WWF, Erin worked at Hewlett Packard for 10 years as a packaging engineer responsible for the design and implementation of laser jet printer and media packaging.  Erin Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: The importance and urgency of eliminating plastic in our environment WWF’s global No Plastic in Nature strategy ReSource: Plastic – WWF’s activation hub to help companies turn plastic commitments into meaningful/measurable action Fixing a broken waste management system: what can companies, governments and consumers do? NextGenCup Challenge and other innovative ideas needed to solve for our plastic crisis Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Erin's Final Questions Highlight: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I would say that collaboration is going to be the key to us solving these big global complex issues. Often, in the sustainability space, we get really concerned about our piece of the work. My sandbox. This is mine. That's not productive and it's not going to help us get to where we want to go. I think that the most successful people I see today in this space are the ones who are building the bridges, not burning them. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I'm excited that I feel like we have turned a page from where I had to spend time talking people into the value of sustainability for businesses into a desire to continue to raise the level of ambition. It's becoming the cost of doing business and now they are thinking about how to go behind that to do something to give back. That is exciting because the level of innovation and opportunity when the leadership in those organizations is at that point is really powerful. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? There are so many great organizations out there that teach me a lot of stuff. In the sustainability space you often have an area where you specialize and then you have to depend on all these other smart people to help you to learn about those things you don't know, enough so that you can valuable in that larger context. I spent a lot of time on websites of other organizations that I respect, learning about some of the programs that they're doing and how I could build a bridge between their work. I spent a lot of time on Ocean Conservancy and they have great resources. The Recycling Partnership is really specializing in increasing recycling in cities. They know a lot of data and wonky information about what people put in their bins and how to increase getting more bins and more collection in cities. I've been learning a lot about investment both in technologies and in different types of infrastructure from the Closed Loop Partners. On the global stage, I'm learning a lot more about how policy and legislation can drive some change that we need to see through other organizations who are doing great work like World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation. So, I spend a lot of time looking at what other powerful organizations are doing and try to build off of it. Where can people go to learn more about you and the work that you're leading at WWF? There is an experts page at the WWF website. There's also a lot going on at panda.org, which is our website. It talks about all the programmatic work that World Wildlife Fund US is doing, not just on plastic material science, but also on species preservation, ecosystem preservation, freshwater and oceans, the forest and of course the complex food and climate systems that interact with all of those things, including plastics. About Sustridge Sustridge is a sustainability consulting firm providing consulting in sustainability strategy development, sustainability reporting, GHG emissions calculating and management, zero waste planning and guidance in TRUE Zero Waste, B Corp, LEED and Carbon Neutral certification.
