Meet Claire Cario, School For The Dogs’ Private Training Manager. Annie interviews Claire about her journey into the world of dog training, which began with a childhood love of nature shows and eventually led to an array of interesting jobs working with dogs, from training dogs to herd geese in Prospect Park, to working with therapy dog teams at The Good Dog Foundation to evaluating dogs in New York City’s public shelter system and beyond. Claire also talks about the rewards, and occasional challenges, of living in New York with her deaf and partially-blind rescue dog, Otis. Cara Zelas is an early childhood teacher. While her dog, Little Dude, has changed her life in several ways – she's not the only one he's impacted. After training him to be a therapy dog through the Good Dog Foundation, they connected her with hospitals and schools to visit children and adults dealing with the trauma of disease, disability, and disaster. Little Dude provided them a level of comfort and relief during their hard times. Seeing that impact inspired Cara to bring Little Dude into more classrooms and use a dog, which kids always love, as a way to teach kids about kindness, empathy, and more. That our actions matter and even one little thing can make a big difference. She was inspired to write a set of curriculum and books around these findings and lessons, which she also shares online for parents (and other teachers) to be able to use for learning with their own kids – which are especially helpful when parents are trying to work on educational activities with their kids at home.SOCIAL MEDIAWebsite - https://www.dogsavethepeople.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/dogsavethepeople/Twitter - https://twitter.com/dogsavethepplFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/dogsavethepeopleFEATURED LINKSThe Big World of Little Dude website - https://www.worldoflittledude.comThe Big World of Little Dude on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/worldoflittledudeThe Big World of Little Dude on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/worldoflittledudeWeekly Online Lesson Plans - https://www.worldoflittledude.com/product-category/lesson-plansThe Good Dog Foundation website - http://thegooddogfoundation.orgThe Good Dog Foundation on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/gooddogtherapyThe Good Dog Foundation on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/thegooddogfoundationThe Good Dog Foundation on Twitter - https://twitter.com/GoodDogTherapyCollaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) website - https://casel.org

Welcome to The Mom Enterprise, a weekly podcast hosted by Kendra Martinez featuring working Moms who find a way to manage it all. Episode Guest: Cara Zelas Cara Zelas is an educator and kindness advocate from Sydney, Australia. Cara earned her Bachelor of Media and Bachelor of Education degrees from Macquarie University. She moved to New York in 2012 where she graduated with an Early Childhood Montessori (AMS) teaching certification from West Side Montessori School. Soon after moving to New York City, Cara became active with The Good Dog Foundation along with her dog, Little Dude. Cara and Little Dude trained to be a therapy team in order to visit hospitals and schools throughout New York City, where they deliver kindness and support to those in need. Through this experience, Cara quickly discovered that children respond most positively to the kindness of dogs, which is how the Big World of Little Dude book series and the Kindness Education curriculum, was developed. Today Cara lives in New York with her husband, health advocate Seth Ginsberg, her daughter Grace and Little Dude. Listen to hear more about Cara's story: - Adventures with Little Dude and the business of therapy dogs. - The importance of teaching kindness at a young age. - The Montessori School of thought. - Babies and Speech. - A fairy tale love and starting a family. - Mom Duties and Responsibilities. - Find your "Mom Tribe". Volunteers for the Good Dog Foundation bring their trained dogs to health facilities and elsewhere to improve recovery rates through canine uplift. Rachel McPherson, Founder and Executive Director, discusses humanitarian tasks these specially trained dogs do for people. Some even work in classrooms with students having difficulty learning. Ms. McPherson became interested in this subject while producing a documentary on therapy dog services several years ago. She dropped the film project and created The Good Dog Foundation, which helped change New York State law to allow therapy dogs into health care facilities. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support
Anti-bullying Dog Therapy Fido is now being used to stop bullying. Rachel McPherson is introducing canines to both the bully victim as well as the bully-er. The transformation is astonishing. It's important determine the type of allergy, whether it's food, environmental or some kind of pest. For some pets, it may be a Miliary Flea Dermatitis - an acute reaction to fleas, pollens in the air, or simply a food allergy. Your vet has the tools to decipher and treat. Courthouse Dogs Former Prosecutor Ellen O'Neill-Stephens thinks dogs can be extremely helpful to those testifying in a courtroom. And, in fact she may be right. Over 30 dogs are currently tucked away next to the defendant as they deliver their sworn statement. It's all part of a program of the Courthouse Dogs Foundation. And while most people think this is a fine idea, it does have its detractors. Seeing-Eye Dogs Bring Blind Couple Together A pair of seeing-eye dogs are getting credit for leading their owners to love. Claire Johnson and Mark Gaffey first met at a course for their guide dogs, Rodd and Venice, last year in Shrewsbury, England. Apparently, the guide dogs were inseparable and seemed to be falling in love. Their visually impaired owners soon followed suit. It's A Zoo! Dr. Debbie is prepared to answer all of your questions about almost every kind of animal. That's why she's at the top of her game. Today it's all about Chinchillas. And that's because more and more pet-guardians are choosing this furry critter over a cat or dog. Cow Spa Produces More Milk We found a dairy farmer that's pampering his cows in order to produce more milk. Farmer Smith is using waterbeds for his cow to lounge in while they watch a giant flat-screen TV. And believe it or not, the cows seem to be reacting by making more milk than those moo-cows without TV privileges. More this week
