This interview took a direction I did not expect when I prepared my questions as my guest Lindsay answered the question of “who did you do it for?” with “ME!” This perspective is one that we had not really looked at yet and so I loved our conversation about doing this for yourself and treating it as a challenge. That comes with the need for an “Accountability Coach” and Mom Tribe. What a nice follow up to the discussion we had with Brandi. What we learned in this episode is that if you plan to breastfeed or pump that is up to you but if you do it, have help and someone cheering you on from the sidelines. If you do not, that is more than ok. There are so many other mommy skills to be good at and that we know you will rock! Brandi is one of the moms that I met in my Mom's group at the Pump Station in Santa Monica, California. I refer to this group in my first Episode “The Cow” and how helpful finding my mom tribe was for me. Brandi and the other moms gave me so much advise and emotional support and we touch on the importance of finding your (honest) mom friends early on. Brandi also shares some funny insight on how she breastfed her son for 10 months while traveling to conferences and conventions and my favorite story involves a silk blouse and forgotten back up bra. Brandi was also the one who taught me about Milk Stork – a milk shipping service for when you are traveling and wanting to ship milk home from your hotel. I hope you get a good laugh and enjoy our conversation. Most importantly, I hope it inspires you to find your own Mom tribe. In the last episode, Leslie interviewed Langley Korepanova, who in the midst of several pieces of wisdom shared a story in which she was at first off-put and offended by a mom who thought differently than her. After consideration, however, Langley came to see the other woman's difference as a gift and strength in the lives of our children. If you ever struggle to embrace different viewpoints in your community of people helping you raise your kiddos, this episode will I hope encourage you to consider God's intention in creating so many different people with so many different viewpoints. To quote the classic cliche–it truly takes a village to raise a child. But, will we embrace the village we're given, or will we hoard the raising of our children in fear that a different viewpoint or approach might be more harmful than helpful? If there's one thing I've learned about being a mom over the past four years it's that making new mom friends can be super uncomfortable. It's that weird feeling of being back in middle school and trying to find someone to sit with at lunch. And NOBODY wants to sit alone! You look around and you see a couple of girls sitting at a table and you hesitantly walk over to them to ask to sit down. It's vulnerable to put yourself out there, not knowing what kind of response you'll get back. "Will they like me?" "Will they think I'm a complete loser, roll their eyes, and leave?" But having a community of friends who support you as a mom is SO important. Sometimes you need that outside voice to let you know you aren't crazy for crying because your toddler smeared poop all over the bathroom. (We've all been there!) Connecting in person can be challenging under normal circumstances for moms (schedules, naps, getting out the door in under an hour. etc). And now with social distancing measures in place, it's pretty much impossible to connect with another mom in person. SO...we go to the next best place - ONLINE! Virtual community is different from in-person community, but it IS community. My guest today is Haili Murch, a mom of two, podcast manager, and manager of an online mom community. Along with her THIS is Legit Motherhood podcast, she started The Legit Motherhood Community Facebook Group, which is a place for moms to interact and support one another in their motherhood journey. Alyson Premo found herself a single mom at rock bottom. She knew she had to stop drinking. And then, she knew she had to help other moms stop too. Today I speak with Alyson, the founder of Sober Mom Tribe, about her journey into and out of alcoholism. Today, Alyson is free from the chains of alcohol and works with hundreds of women across the country to become sober and re-create their lives without alcohol. Alyson created Sober Mom Tribe after realizing there weren't a ton of resources out there specifically for moms in recovery. Many sobriety programs and books are written by the childless or single, but moms face very unique challenges and they need a specific kind of support. I enjoyed speaking with Alyson and learning some of her tips for remaining calm and staying sober in the face of struggles, including right now during the Coronavirus pandemic. I recently gave up drinking and have found so many fabulous women and moms like Alyson who are empowering people to choose something better for their lives. You'll be amazed by her story. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

Mom tribes are a thing… for some of us. Others find it harder to make and maintain fun, easygoing friendships with other parents. But should we feel bad if we don’t have a “Sex and the City”-style group that are all equally close and whom we see three times a week?   Our listener Hester describes a mom tribe this way:  like-minded moms with similar age kids who have one another's backscan be one or many, depending on your comfort level  more precious than ever when the traditional support system of close family is not availableIn this episode, we discuss our listeners’ advice on how to find mom tribes, how to deepen connections with the one you may already have-- plus whether online tribes count (yes).  In a day and age when our siblings and parents might live far away, it’s worth investing ourselves in the communities that can happen wherever we are.  Here's how writer Jenny Anderson explains it: I used to think that community was as simple as having friends who bring a lasagna when things fall apart and champagne when things go well. Who pick up your kids from school when you can’t. But I think community is also an insurance policy against life’s cruelty; a kind of immunity against loss and disappointment and rage. My community will be here for my family if I cannot be. And if I die, my kids will be surrounded people who know and love them, quirks and warts and oddities and all. Who do you need in your mom tribe? Personal mom tribes are necessary – we can’t expect everyone to understand the joys of motherhood like cleaning up blowouts, eating your food cold after everyone else was fed, and hearing your name called for 15 minutes straight with no end in sight. Why is it important: -          You need people around you to support you -          They get what you’re going through -          So you won’t feel alone or think you’re the only one who’s dealing with it -          So you can be a better mom by having an outlet and seeing how others do it Some tips about this tribe: -          Don’t feel guilty if you don’t stay in touch regularly, we all get it -          These women get what you’re going through, so use this time to vent if you need to or ask for help and solicited advice (not like the unsolicited advice you got when pregnant that you probably forgot about) -          This should be a no judging space – so make sure you pick people that can accept this -          Keep the number to a comfortable amount – if only 2 people can be in your tribe because that’s all the energy you have at the moment, it’s ok, but if you like a bigger crowd, go for it. -          Your tribe of mom friends is there to celebrate with you and laugh with you and cry with you and help you get through motherhood with your sanity -          Your mom tribe is there to support you and help you know your worth and that you are a good parent Types of people you need in your mom tribe: Sage wisdom Fun and spontaneous/cool mom Encourager and Prayer Partner – can go both ways The one who tells you what you NEED to hear Old time friend – who knew you before you were a mom   Download the freebie - 5 Unexpected Places to Find Your Mom Tribe here: www.mommifaceted.com/episode26   Follow Mommifaceted!
