Jimi Hendrix is widely regarded as the best guitarist of all time, not least by our very own Chula. With unparalleled technical mastery, showmanship and innovation, Hendrix seemed to be one with his instrument. Over the course of his upsettingly brief career, he redefined the musical landscape of his time, and cemented himself as a cultural legend of the late 60's and early 70's.Yet behind the myth was a shy young man, whose early years were difficult, unsettled, and marked with emotional and physical neglect. He found music as an escape from his chaotic upbringing; but struggled with the immense fame and fortune that came along with it. In the final episode of the season, Chula goes beyond the myth of Jimi Hendrix and explores the public triumphs and private pains of his ultimate guitar hero. Drawing on his work as a psychotherapist, he discusses how Hendrix's unstable childhood, particularly as a child of alcoholic (ACA), might have contributed to his ability to experience and cope with fame and success in adulthood. This week's ‘ One For The Road' is ‘Electric Ladyland' - the third and final studio album by the Jimi Hendrix Experience - which Chula believes “everyone should listen to once before they die”. Few artists embody the term “iconoclast” more than Sinead O'Connor. A voice of rebellion, she spoke truth to power and stood for what she believed in, regardless of personal and professional cost.As a survivor of unspeakable trauma herself, Sinead denounced child abuse in the catholic church on live television years before the world was ready to hear it. And though this infamous act saw her blacklisted from TV networks and venues, she maintained that it put her career “back on the right track”. She was, and always would be, a protest singer - never a pop star.A new Sinead-devotee, Sam returns to tell us the story of the fearless feminist icon with compassion and admiration. Together with Matt and Chula, she reflects on how the media portrayal of Sinead O'Connor had insidiously fed her own pre-conceptions and unconscious biases. This week's ‘One For The Road' is the seminal feminist book ‘Women Who Run With The Wolves: Contacting the Power of the Wild Woman' by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. “See to live is to suffer, but to survive well that's to find meaning in the suffering”. This is what American rapper DMX tells us in his brutally honest autobiographical song “Slippin'”.It is difficult to overstate the trauma of DMX's childhood - and the transformative power of the music he created out of it. Born Earl Simmons, his start in life was marked with abuse, poverty, ill health and abandonment. Funneled into youth institutions - and then into youth incarceration, his early years paved the way for lifelong struggles with mental health, drug addiction and criminality. Yet in spite of - or perhaps because of - these experiences, DMX rose to become one of the defining rap artists of the late 90's and early 00's, making history as the first artist ever to have his first five albums hit number one in the Billboard charts. A captivating MC, DMX will be remembered for his disarmingly soul-searching lyrics, his emotionally charged performances and his very public, ultimately losing battle with his inner demons. In this episode, Chula Goonewardene - Clinical Director and Co-Founder of Attune - takes a compassionate dive into the life and checkered career of DMX, informed by his role as a psychotherapist. As the team reflect on the personal and systemic challenges that DMX faced, they discuss his unique ability to channel pain and vulnerability into some of the most powerful rap ever produced. This week's ‘One for the Road' is ‘The Zen of Recovery', a book Chula was introduced to by his sponsor during his own recovery journey. Written by dharma teacher Mel Ash, this book explores the AA Twelve Steps within the context of Buddhism and Zen practice. Delsy is back for this powerful conversation about how to accept our aging and changing bodies. We discuss how we're embracing or attempting to embrace how we're changing in our bodies, how cultural expectations on Latinas have impacted our perspectives, and how notions of what is “healthy” has evolved. Next, we speak to Dalina Soto, also known as “Your Latina Nutritionist” across social media where she helps folks heal their relationship with food. Dalina and I have an insightful conversation about how white supremacy shows up in our notions of health and the ways that she's using her CHULA method to empower folks to make food choices that feel good for our bodies and cultures. Dalina's new book The Latina Anti-Diet: A Dietitian's Guide to Authentic Health That Celebrates Culture And Full-Flavor Living, is out now. Empathy For The Devil is back for a new season, bringing you the stories of six iconic musicians who left us too soon and faced unforgiving judgement, blame and even derision both during their career and long after their passing. As three music industry veterans turned mental health professionals, Sam, Matt and Chula unpack these tragic tales with empathy and understanding, drawing on their unique professional and lived experiences. While this podcast may be about artists who have been and gone, their challenges remain all too current, still affecting individuals in the industry today. So join our three hosts once again as we delve into the turbulent lives of Amy Winehouse, Sid Vicious and many more, as they discuss not only what happened, but why it happened - and how things might have been different with more considered support, empathy and care.Attune, as a dedicated provider of mental health and well-being services, is committed to delivering holistic support and resources. Alexander Chula is a Thai-British medical doctor and writer, living and working in London. He studied Classics at Oxford then medicine at the University of London. His first book, "Goodbye, Dr Banda," was published by Polygon in 2023. He has also written for The Spectator, The Daily Telegraph and The Critic in the UK, and for The New Criterion and National Review in the US. Dr. Chula's book raises compelling questions about the universality of the humanities, the purposes of education, the challenges of nation-building in postcolonial Africa, and cultural transmission and translation. Dr. Chula brings to us an engaging narrative of a small, often overlooked African country, Malawi. Despite its size, he showcases why Malawi embodies questions that resonate with global significance, touching on the value of education, the western canon, and cultural exchanges. In "Goodbye Dr. Banda," Dr. Chula combines vivid storytelling with profound investigation into how the West engages with drastically diverse cultures, especially relevant in today's global context. Kurt Cobain was one of the most powerful and influential musicians, songwriters and performers of his generation, who's lasting legacy still permeates the sounds and attitudes of artists from all genres today. As the lead singer of Nirvana, he fronted their own brand of groundbreaking emotion-laden, guitar-heavy music into the mainstream, defining a new genre with a scream of such naked vulnerability and authenticity that it tore through the listener, perhaps reflecting the trapped feelings of a generation. The scream of a butterfly. But this came at a cost. As well as sharing his pain through music, Kurt Cobain lived it. Was this simply a life of magazine cover, paint by numbers, rock'n roll excess? Or the tragic story of someone with an enormous talent for expressing their pain, desperately trying to paint it in any way he could? This week, Chula Goonerwardene takes the lead for the first time to talk about one of his favourite ever musicians – from a band who inspired him to become a drummer in the 1990s. But far from discussing the same tired, cliched ‘tortured artist' myths that now surround Cobain after his death in 1994, Chula helps us to examine his story through a modern and empathetic mental health lens. This is a moving discussion that looks at Cobain's life and in doing so identifies some truly universal themes. This week's ‘One for the Road' is the hit Netflix show ‘Baby Reindeer' – it captured the world's attention when it came out this year, and is a truly honest and provocative drama that among many other things, looks at the relationship between trauma and substance misuse in a visceral and deeply uncomfortable way. Not for the faint hearted. You can watch it through the link here: https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/81219887 Content Warnings: substance use, addiction, rehab, overdose, suicide, childhood trauma, domestic abuse, religious indoctrination, trauma bonding.

It's time for more Marvel!! Bet you missed it, we know Rachel did. This week Hannah joins us because why not, and we sort everyone from the new show Echo, which was amazing and CRIMINALLY UNDER-ADVERTISED. Like John Oliver, we're doing everything we can to get the Mouse to sue us, so fuck you Disney. Anyway, this isn't about them. This is about Maya, who is amazing. And Biscuits, who is also amazing. Jury is kind of out on everyone else depending on who you are (we're looking at Rachel again) but at least we can all agree that Fisk sucks. So hope on by and join us for the review and analysis of this street level anti- (but not really) hero, and just. Watch the show. It's so good.

Episode 70, nice to meet ya! Can't believe we've arrived at just 30 shy of 100 episodes! If you've made it this far with us, we appreciate you more than you know! We start off this episode with a slight tangent on how the popular, "Dry January," saga is going for us. Are we participating? Was it a facade? Are we directly hurting the economy of our own industry by not drinking? S. O. S. We directly attack the Academy for not nominating The Iron Claw YET AGAIN. You're wrong, we are right. End of story. Through our Oscars discussion, we realize we have forgotten most movies we've seen in 2023. Thank you long covid. ECHO premiered a few weeks ago on Disney+ and we're here to break it down. More specifically, we are here for Maya Lopez supremacy, and Chula, you can kick rocks for being an absent grandmother when Maya needed you the most. Biscuits - you're the real MVP. Still reading this and have 0 idea what we're talking about? That's why you should listen to this episode - DUH!
On this week's episode of the podcast, we are reviewing Echo Episode 2, and we are absolutely loving this series thus far. The world is starting to get more fleshed out with these characters, their motives, and it's setting the stage for a dramatic finale. Is Maya in the right? How's Chula's pull with the town going to impact things to come on the show? What do we think some future implications will be for certain characters? All that is discussed and more. We hope you enjoy this review of Echo Episode 2!To support the show, you can find us on Patreon at http://www.Patreon.com/ABINGERSPodcast.To watch the video version of this show, check us out at YouTube.com/TheABINGERSThanks for tuning in!The ABINGERSSupport the show

I dunno if you have heard, but there is a brand-new Blu-ray release of Gunbuster from Discotek. It's out there! It's great! And one of the great things about it, is that it features an excellent all new English dub. And the lead Noriko was portrayed as Kiane Chula King. Who, coincidentally, is also the subject of this OSMinterview! While Noriko may be one of her first big roles, it was really nice to dig in a little to find out more about her. And while I am not John, I also want a whole new interview with her all about her experiences in tabletop roleplaying. That would be, as they say, awesome. Or well… OSM.OSMnotesWe want to thank Kiane once again for taking the time to chat with us! And you can find all the places where Kiane is by checking out her online at:Website: https://kianechulaking.wixsite.com/kckvoTumblr: https://chulacabra.tumblr.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/KianeChulaKingAnd as always, feel free to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts! Prioritizing exercise isn't easy especially when it is viewed as a punishment rather than a celebration. Do you agree? Sometimes we forget about all of the things that our bodies are capable of because we are so caught up in a meal that we ate, fitting into a certain size, or wishing we had a toned stomach. One thing I have learned over the years is that this mindset does not allow anyone to see their body for what it is - powerful, beautiful, and worth celebrating. Whether you enjoy 20-minute walks or lifting heavy weights, moving your body should always be empowering. In this episode, I am chatting with my personal trainer Tara De Leon about the importance of exercise - no matter how you choose to move your body. This is one of the most listened-to episodes ever on the podcast, so I decided it was time to bring it back—especially because this message is worth repeating. Tara De Leon has over 18 years of experience in the fitness industry. She has done everything from teaching water aerobics to personal training to even being a collegiate strength coach. As the Personal Training Coordinator at Edgewater Fitness, Tara helps women be confident and badass by teaching them to lift heavy weights. Outside of the gym, Tara loves to spend time with her husband Marcus, adorable newborn baby boy, Maverick, and Aussie pup, Chula. Whether this will be your first time hearing this episode or you have heard it before, I want you to remember this important lesson from it: find what works for you and give yourself grace. Tune in to learn how to do that from Tara De Leon.
