Chasing top-line revenue can be a path to self-destruction for entrepreneurs. What happens when you lose sight of your business sweet spot to chase revenue? On today’s episode, Darren Virassammy from 34 Strong joins Dr. Sabrina to share his previous work experiences as a team member in a company that had a tight sweet spot, then lost it. Darren and Dr. Sabrina share a mission to create great places to work and on today’s episode they dive deep into how Pumpkin Planning to define the business sweet spot is foundational to creating a highly profitable, great place to work. A tightly defined sweet spot makes it possible for team members to work from their strengths.    Dr. Sabrina and Darren will be partnering again in the coming months to deliver “Leading Your Organization From Your Strengths” through Tap the Potential. Consider joining them as it is powerful training for your team!   Darren is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of 34 Strong, comprised of a team that believes everyone deserves a great place to work and that any workplace can be great. A leading expert in the global employee-engagement community, the 34 Strong team leverages the strengths-based approach to human development to create massive shifts within organizations, both culturally and on the bottom line. He and his team have created sustainable change in small micro-businesses all the way up to large, organizational teams at the FDA, Bank of America, and the California Department of Public Health. Recently Darren has keynoted for Hitachi Global Women’s Conference, the Rotary World Peace Conference, the Professional Grounds Management Society, and author Mike Michalowicz’s ProfitCon. Darren’s 34 Strong business partner, Brandon Miller, is the co-author with his wife, Analyn Miller, of a strengths-based parenting book titled Play to Their Strengths, which was published in July 2019.      Show Highlights:   Darren shares how he worked for a company that unintentionally built teams that played to their strengths, and how smoothly their projects went. Then everything shifted. The owner of the company decided that job descriptions were going to be combined, and no longer would the team be able to play to their strengths. This eroded the sense of accountability.  Darren relates how this transition negatively affected the team dynamics, and how team members experienced trust issues, clarity, and self-doubt. They went from engaged to highly disengaged. Although the company grew in revenue over the next year, the bottom line was massively threatened. The company grew, but the team didn’t. This was incredibly painful. Darren provides some examples of having to push back on a client trying to force him to violate the company’s immutable laws. In the construction industry, the idea is that you’ll be able to make it up in volume. This is a myth!  Being set up for failure: Darren describes being a fire-fighter having to put out “fires” on other projects because an estimator was trying to manage a job. He questioned why more time wasn’t being spent training the estimators so they could be more successful in their projects. “Controlled burns” would have been spending the time to align talent and deciding which roles people stayed best in.  Dr. Sabrina summarizes the Tap the Potential Solution for creating a highly profitable, great place to work. Dr. Sabrina and Darren discuss his experience with “Pumpkin Planning”, how Pumpkin Planning is not a “once and done” event, and how Darren’s team is looking at “Pumpkin Clients”, as well as “Pumpkin Fields”. He holds a black belt in Kyokushin Karate, a 3rd degree brown belt in Aki-jujitsu and loves training in and teaching Martial arts. He enjoys daily cold showers, Wim Hof Breathing and regular cold water plunges. As a result, his wife and kids (and many on his team and others who find this out about him) think he is certifiably insane. In today’s conversation, Darren shares the essence to creating great workplaces and engaging teams. By fostering an environment where each person can play to their strengths, team members are more motivated, confident and can tangibly point to the value they bring to the organization. In turn, the organization benefits from greater synergy, increased creativity, motivation and productivity. Darren provides valuable insights into how you can apply this approach to any business and team, small or large. Key Takeaways Everyone deserves a great place to work and that any workplace can be great. Talents are defined as our natural patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that can be productively applied. In school we are conditioned to focus on our greatest areas of weakness rather than our strengths. We can focus on improving our weaknesses and get to a level of mediocrity. The real question is, what are we aiming for – mediocrity or excellence? Playing to our strengths includes owning where we shine and where we’re blind. When people are playing to their strengths, they are more energized, enthusiastic, and engaged. Over 65% of the US workforce is disengaged in some capacity. People want to be valued for being valuable. People are the lifeblood that flows through organizations. You can’t have a healthy organization with unhealthy lifeblood flowing through it. Culture is created every single day. One email, one phone call, one conversation at a time. Do you want to create culture by design or by accident? Either way, it’s going to happen. As a consultant you are not the change agent, you are the guide. The true measure of a leader is not what happens while they’re there, it’s what happens when they’re not. We often undervalue what we are a genius in because it is so easy. Yet that’s what people value in us. Celebrate your failures because they make you who you are. Own your mistakes and ask what you can learn from it. Are you clear about where your strengths lie? In today's episode, we're sharing our interview with Darren Virassammy, the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of 34 Strong. Darren blew Dr. Sabrina away with his talk at ProfitCON last Fall, about working and living from our strengths. Darren has been bringing StrengthsFinder into organizations to help team members to gain clarity about where their strengths lie. And Dr. Sabrina has been looking for ways to help her clients deepen what they're already doing that works – leading from strengths.    Did you know that businesses with highly-engaged team members working from their business Sweet Spots have the potential be 200-10,000 percent more profitable than their peers in the same industry? This is because people are happiest when they are working from their strengths. The ability to work from your strength is key to creating a great place to work. Tune in today to hear Darren's conversation with Dr. Sabrina about tapping people's strengths!   Darren Virassammy is the Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of 34 Strong, comprised of a team that believes everyone deserves a great place to work and that any workplace can be great.  A leading expert in the global employee engagement community, the 34 Strong team leverages the Strengths-Based approach to human development to create massive shifts within organizations, both culturally and on the bottom line. Darren and his team have created sustainable change in small micro-businesses, all the way up to large organizational teams at the FDA, Bank of America, and The California Department of Public Health.  Recently, Darren keynoted for Hitachi Global Women’s Conference, The Rotary World Peace Conference, The Professional Grounds Management Society, and Author Mike Michalowicz’ ProfitCon.     Show highlights:   How Darren got into his work and why he's so passionate about what he does. When you work really hard on something that you don't love, it's called stress. And when you work really hard on something that you love, and that you feel is making an impact, it's called passion. Every employee deserves a great place to work, and every workplace can be a great place to work. It takes work! What happens when people become better versions of themselves. Talent is your natural patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior that can be productively applied. Focusing on what's right with people. We can easily overlook our talents because those things come so naturally to us.  Creating awareness of how our talents align to create excellence. Moving our frustration to fascination. Learning the language of strengths to identify your talents. The way that tension dissipates in a team after understanding patterns of strength. What happens when business owners take the  StrengthsFinder Assessment. Team awareness starts with self-awareness. Everybody wants to be valued for being valuable. The way that your team interacts is the brand of your organization. Darren shares some data on the level of engagement of employees in America. Dealing with pushback within organizations. Catching people doing things right. Dr. Sabrina and Darren are teaming up together to offer Leading Your Organization from Strengths, to help small business owners build teams that are working from their strengths. What will be included in Leading Your Organization from Strengths, and what you will gain from it.   Links and resources:   Books mentioned in this episode:      How to Hire the Best by Dr. Sabrina Starling   The Pumpkin Plan by Mike Michalowicz   Destination Unstoppable by Maureen Monte   Free Exercise Download: Grind.
