In a true display of courage, grit, and determination, we see fighters from all over the world put it all on the line for a chance at glory! The insane abilities and fighting prowess of the Karateka involved show just how far ahead of their time they were in terms of full-contact fighting application! Listen in as we break down what we like about this documentary, how well executed it is, and why it is definitely one of the best comfort films out there! Joining me in the virtual studio is martial artist, podcaster, and Wing Chun instructor Topher Mowry aka that other Wing Chun guy! And you may be thinking “Ok, so they are going to review a Wing Chun film right?” Well, that would be too predictable! Instead, we are watching a movie about one of the greatest Karate masters of all time- ‘Karate Bullfighter' aka ‘Champion of Death'! Based off of the HIGHLY fictionalized manga about Kyokushin Karate founder Mas Oyama, this Sonny Chiba film features everything we love about the Toei Karate films of the 1970's. Zany, cartoonish villains? Check ✅ Over the top melodrama? Check ✅ Epic Karate training and fight scenes? DOUBLE CHECK ✅✅ Oh, and did I mention he fights a bull? Listen in as we break down what we love so much about this movie and the other works of Sonny Chiba, elements of Karate and what makes it so special, and why you should watch this movie ASAP if you haven't already! A short biography and review of the founder of Kyokushin Karate, a sect of karate known for their emphasis on physical conditioning and full-contact sparring. NOTES *Oyama devised the 100-man kumite; which he went on to complete three times in a row over the course of three days. He was known for his toughness. If you blocked one of his strikes you would in turn be injured. He was injured during the 3 day Kumite, but continued on, prepared for a 4th day, it's rumored to not have happened because no-one else had the disire to continue with him… *He was also known for fighting bulls bare-handed. He battled 52 bulls over the course of his lifetime, supposedly cutting off the horns of several and killing three instantly with one strike, earning him the nickname of “Godhand”. *Later in life, Oyama suffered from Osteoarthritis. Despite his illness, he never gave up training. He held demonstrations of his karate, which included breaking objects. *Oyama wrote over 80 books in Japanese. *Oyama died at the age of 70 in Tokyo, Japan on April 26, 1994, due to lung cancer. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/warriormindset/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/warriormindset/support

Darren Virassammy is the co-founder and COO of 34 Strong, comprised of a team that believes everyone deserves a great place to work and that any workplace can be great. A leading expert in the global employee engagement community, the 34 Strong team leverages the strengths-based approach to human development to create massive shifts within organizations, both culturally and on the bottom line. Darren and his team have created sustainable change in small micro-businesses, all the way up to large organizational teams at the FDA, Bank of America, and The California Department of Public Health. Darren’s 34 Strong business partner, Brandon Miller is the co-author (with his wife Analyn Miller) of a strengths-based parenting book titled Play to Their Strengths which was released in July of 2019. Random fun facts about Darren: He is an electric bassist and closed down Profit Con 2018 by performing a solo bass guitar piece he composed titled Metamorphosis as a tribute to the journey of entrepreneurs. He holds a black belt in Kyokushin Karate, a 3rd degree brown belt in Aki-jujitsu and loves training in and teaching Martial arts. He enjoys daily cold showers, Wim Hof Breathing and regular cold water plunges. As a result, his wife and kids (and many on his team and others who find this out about him) think he is certifiably insane. In today’s conversation, Darren shares the essence to creating great workplaces and engaging teams. By fostering an environment where each person can play to their strengths, team members are more motivated, confident and can tangibly point to the value they bring to the organization. In turn, the organization benefits from greater synergy, increased creativity, motivation and productivity. Darren provides valuable insights into how you can apply this approach to any business and team, small or large. Key Takeaways Everyone deserves a great place to work and that any workplace can be great. Talents are defined as our natural patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that can be productively applied. In school we are conditioned to focus on our greatest areas of weakness rather than our strengths. We can focus on improving our weaknesses and get to a level of mediocrity. The real question is, what are we aiming for – mediocrity or excellence? Playing to our strengths includes owning where we shine and where we’re blind. When people are playing to their strengths, they are more energized, enthusiastic, and engaged. Over 65% of the US workforce is disengaged in some capacity. People want to be valued for being valuable. People are the lifeblood that flows through organizations. You can’t have a healthy organization with unhealthy lifeblood flowing through it. Culture is created every single day. One email, one phone call, one conversation at a time. Do you want to create culture by design or by accident? Either way, it’s going to happen. As a consultant you are not the change agent, you are the guide. The true measure of a leader is not what happens while they’re there, it’s what happens when they’re not. We often undervalue what we are a genius in because it is so easy. Yet that’s what people value in us. Celebrate your failures because they make you who you are. Own your mistakes and ask what you can learn from it. Danny is joined by professional storyteller Andréa Topper! Andréa is a writer, editor, and journalist who was an editor at the CrossFit Journal and of the popular book “Speal: A David and Goliath Story”. Andréa and Danny talk about her time working with CrossFit HQ, how she fell in love with Kyokushin Karate, and how physical fitness training helps prepare the mind more than anything. Andréa then catches Danny off guard, putting him on the spot when she spontaneously asks HIM a question. Wait until the end for a very impromptu conversation! Before their conversation, Danny shares a hilarious Cinco De Mayo story from when he was a cop in Salinas, why everyone should read the CrossFit Journal, and how letting your children debate with you will empower them as adults. A listener question is answered: Is it safe to go on the 500 calorie a day diet? Finally, Danny goes off on a tangent in his Mike Tyson impersonation that you will not want to miss. Here is where you can find each segment in case you want to skip around. If you’re not familiar who Georges St Pierre aka GSP is, he is arguably the GOAT, that is, the greatest of all time mixed martial artist. He is a former welterweight and middleweight UFC champion, and still holds the record for most consecutive wins in the UFC, tied at 20, and boasts a professional record of 26 wins and just 2 losses, both losses coming in championship fights relatively early in his career against Matt Hughes and Matt Serra, and both losses were avenged in relatively quick succession as GSP, reflected, learned and applied the lessons to overcome his adversaries the second time around. GSP grew up in Montreal and studied and trained in Kyokushin Karate as a child. In early adulthood, whilst trying to make ends meet so he could invest in his training and his career, Georges spent time bouncing at nightclubs, worked as a garbage cleaner, slept on the floor of a dilapidated apartment and caught freezing cold trains to the Bronx in NYC to train with the best. As listeners of this show will appreciate, talent will only get you so far. The world is awash with naturally talented people who never truly fulfilled their potential or came anywhere close to the success they could have achieved if they persisted. Persistence is everything. As such, I was keen to understand what got GSP through those early days when he was sleeping on the floor. What kept him going in the face of supposedly insurmountable odds when even those closest to him thought he was crazy to even think that he could one day be a UFC champion.
