Everyone is looking for the secret to having a happy life. Books abound on the subject. Yet, the Bible has contained the secret all this time - being filled by the Holy Spirit. But what does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit-- There's a lot of confusion regarding this, yet it is something that we cannot be confused about since it is essential to living the Christian life. So what does it mean to be filled by the Spirit, and how can we be filled--
Fr. Seraphim Rose writes: The concept of prelest, a key one in Orthodox ascetical teaching, is completely absent in the Protestant-Catholic world which produced the "charismatic" movement; and this fact explains why such an obvious deception can gain such a hold over nominally "Christian" circles, and also why a "prophet" like Nicholas Berdyaev who comes from an Orthodox background should regard it as absolutely essential that in the "new age of the Holy Spirit" "There will be no more of the ascetic world-view." The reason is obvious: the Orthodox ascetic world-view gives the only means by which men, having received the Holy Spirit at their Baptism and Chrismation, may truly continue to acquire the Holy Spirit in their lives; and it teaches how to distinguish and guard oneself against spiritual deception. The "new spirituality" of which Berdyaev dreamed and which the "charismatic revival" actually practices, has an entirely different foundation and is seen to be a fraud in the light of the Orthodox ascetical teaching. Therefore, there is not room for both conceptions in the same spiritual universe: to accept the "new spirituality" of the "charismatic revival" one must reject Orthodox Christianity; and conversely, to remain an Orthodox Christian, one must reject the "charismatic revival," which is a counterfeit of Orthodoxy. A very good morning to you! It is Thursday morning, 30 June 2022 and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.“Thus says the Lord:“Heaven is My throne,And earth is My footstool.Where is the house that you will build Me?And where is the place of My rest?Isaiah 66:1And then we go to Acts 7:48:“However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands”We cannot put God in a box. He cannot be housed in a man-made temple. Now I have been to London, I have been to that magnificent work of art, St Paul's Cathedral. It is incredible but too small to house the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. You have often heard me speak about my green cathedral... the maize fields on the farm! Walking through those fields as a young man worshipping God... what a place! Or riding my horse, Snowy, in the hills and fields around the farm. Hearing the birds singing with wind blowing on my face... Huge clouds gathering for life-giving rain, the flashes of lighting, claps of thunder and then the rain falling down and washing the earth clean - Oh, what a cathedral!I have visited prisoners in maximum security prisons all over the world - In South Africa, New Zealand, Scotland and Northern Island and some of these men are there for life. They will never come out. They are sitting in prison where they can hardly see the sun. But you know the amazing thing is when they meet the living Christ as their Saviour, they are more free to worship God than many of us who go into these majestic cathedrals but have never found the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour.1 Corinthians 6:19 says our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit - There is nothing more beautiful than a believer worshipping their Lord Jesus Christ, from the depths of his heart.Today, you might be in a wheelchair, or in hospital, you might be in a prison cell but I want to tell you something now - That will not hold you back because Jesus lives inside your heart. Have a wonderful day and praise Him because He is worthy.God bless you and goodbye.

What does it mean to be -filled- with the Holy Spirit- There are a number of answers to this question, but it seems none of them fits the biblical text. Today, we're considering the broad command to be filled with the Holy Spirit and how it fits within the context of Ephesians 5 and the general framework of the gospel.
Part 21 – What Is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit? There is perhaps no other subject matter that has made for greater debate amongst Evangelicals and about which more varied opinions have been held, than the topic at hand in this 21st teaching part. For some, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues; for others, it is a second work of sanctification whereby one now receives the power to ‘live’ a holy life. Some would argue that this supernatural phenomenon ceased in the first century and therefore, although this experience is recorded in the book of Acts, it is no longer one that can be experienced today. One group argues that the baptism of Holy Spirit is not an experience subsequent to salvation but is rather synonymous with receiving the Holy Spirit at conversion. Another group argues that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is an experience that is distinguishable and distinct from salvation, coming after the initial experience of being born-again. What are we to make of all these contravening statements? Where is one to go to try to clear things up and to shed light on this important topic? Thank God that as Christians, we do not have to resort to speculation, we have the Word of God upon which any experience might firmly be placed. However, being able to look at the Bible objectively can be very difficult, not least if one belongs to a denomination that has a party line that must not be crossed. In this teaching, we shall seek as best as possible to lay aside preconceived ideas and in so doing, come to the Bible afresh in order to obtain answers to the question at hand, ‘What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?’ Download teaching notes (pdf) http://traffic.libsyn.com/bethesdashalom/21_What_Is_the_Baptism_of_the_Holy_Spirit.pdf
