    I in Them Part 2

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2025 42:31

In the second part of our study, we spend some more time asking, "What does it mean that Jesus dwells in us?" Today we look at the nature and the power of words, particularly God's words. How do we bring together God speaking to us through the Bible and Christ dwelling in us? In other words, how can the Bible actually and practically affect us today?

    I In Them

As we continue our study of John 17:1-5, why do we jump down to verse 26? In verse 4, we see that Jesus mentions the "work" that he has accomplished. What, exactly, is that work? To answer that question, we look at verse 26 when he prays that he be in them. What, then, does that mean? If we can understand what it means for Christ to be in us, it will have a profound impact on our daily lives. But to get a clear understanding of "Christ in us," we need to look at what neuroscience is discovering about the brain. So, as we introduce this mini-study, we need remember that Jesus saved every part of our being and, for believers, now dwells in every part of our being.

    Authority Over All Flesh

Today we are looking at Jesus' statement saying that he has been given authority over all flesh. What does that mean? Why did he say that? Did he not have authority before? What we see is that when we understand the authority he possesses, then we are able to turn to him, worship him, and follow him appropriately.

In what is known as the "High Priestly Prayer," Jesus lifts his eyes to heaven. Why? Is this just the posture that he uses for his prayer? No - what we learn is that this action is rooted in the very beginning of the Bible. At the Fall in Genesis 3, the heavens were not included in the curse. Because of that, people understood that the heavens were the source of blessings required to live this life in this cursed realm. But throughout the Bible, people have tried and failed to obtain the blessings for themselves. So how do we get those blessings? And what are those blessings?

The story of Jesus is the story of God's plan for the ages. In John 27, Jesus references many parts of that story. As we look at the first few verses of the chapter, a couple questions naturally arise. First, what was the nature of the relationship between Jesus and the Father before the world existed? Secondly, when did they actually form this plan? Today, we look at Jesus before the world existed and what we can learn from it.

Today we introduce a mini-series on what is called Jesus' High Priestly Prayer. This happens immediately after the Passover meal and immediately prior to his betrayal and arrest. So what does Jesus say? We find that throughout this prayer, he references parts of the Biblical story. But what is this story? To properly introduce John 17, we first have to review the story of the Bible.

Life is hard. Things go wrong. Evil is done against us, and sometimes tragedies happen that just don't make sense. Why? Why did God allow this? Was this really God's will? We all are faced with those situations and ask those questions. And when it comes to Jesus and his crucifixion, we can't but help but wonder, "Why? Wasn't there another way?" Today, guest preacher Paul Pletcher looks at Isaiah 53 and ask three questions.

Jonah knew God was merciful, which is why he initially fled to Tarshish to begin with; he didn't want the Ninevites to receive the mercy that he himself had experienced. God proceeded to teach Jonah that His love and mercy for the Ninevites is far different than Jonah's indifference to their damnation, and far greater than Jonah's warped concern for a wild plant for which he played no role in causing to flourish.
