Sermon Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21Paul had a divine encounter on the Damascus Road (Acts 9) and nothing was ever the same. It caused him to see himself and others in an entirely different way. He writes, “From now on we regard no one from a human point of view” (2 Cor. 5:16).  Lent is not merely a season of fasting—it is a season of being made new. It is not just about being forgiven—it is about being made new. It is true that forgiveness wipes the slate clean, but what about newness? Newness rewrites the story. Newness re-orients our hearts, re-shapes our desires, and re-trains our eyes to see the world as God sees it. May we be made new!

Sermon Scripture: 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 Long after the rest of the world has moved on from the decorations of Christmas, the church remains wrapped in light and greenery because we want to remember, we work to remember — the light has come, and the light of Christ shines brightly through us. As we celebrate Epiphany and Candlemas, and the final Sunday of having our Christmas decorations on display, we consider how our love becomes a flame through which the Holy Spirit shines brightly to all the world.

Sermon Scripture: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31 What if, in the midst of a culture that celebrates individualism, we are instead called to embrace belonging, humility, and responsibility within the community of faith? The Gospel message suggests that our purpose is to live in openness to others through service, acts of love and kindness, and protecting the most vulnerable among us. At a time when the world shouts, “ME is greater than WE!” Paul's words in 1 Corinthians challenge us to consider that perhaps we've got it backwards—maybe WE is greater than ME.

It won't look and feel the same, there is not one best way of being used by God that is better than the others, but God is faithful to use us for his work if we will join in the process. God wants to help you become the perfect version of yourself. This version of you is not only content and healthy, but it brings contentment and health to everyone around you, resulting in others becoming the best version of themselves too.

Sermon Scripture: 2 Corinthians 8:7-15 In most Christian churches, generosity is described as one of the core values of the Christian life. The Bible records Jesus saying these words – “it is better to give than to receive.”    At Emmaus Road, one of our core values is Partnership; we believe “our faith calls us to give our lives away in service to others.” This is often in opposition to the spirit of competition of our age, where, in order to survive and come out on top, we are taught to focus first on ourselves.  How does one develop a spirit of generosity? In today's lectionary passage, Paul describes generosity as the grace of giving.

Sermon Scripture: 1 Peter 1:3-7 Life just just happens. We wake up, go about our days, years go by, and one day we realize we've been formed into a particular shape. Then, when we begin to walk the path with Jesus, we realize we are not starting with a blank slate because we've already been deformed, not into the beauty of Christ, but into the ugliness of selfish sin and shame. Therefore, at some level, what Jesus is inviting us into is a life of counter formation. To be formed to be like Jesus will require an intentional, thoughtful, conscious way of life to counteract the many forces that malformed our soul.

And of all the topics that we grapple with in our modern world, money is one that the scripture has LOTS to say about. There is an over abundance of warnings, admonitions, and counsel on money through the Bible.  The love of money after all gives birth to all kinds of evils as the scripture says, but money in and of itself is not evil and it has great potential for serving God and serving others. So the way we use our money ought to reflect the character of the God who has saved us.

Romans 3:21–31 The Righteousness of God Through Faith [21] But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—[22] the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: [23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, [24] and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, [25] whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. [26] It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. [27] Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. [28] For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. [29] Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, [30] since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. [31] Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law. (ESV)

It turns out, though, this kind of confusion isn’t new. Early Christians faced a similar problem regarding wisdom.   James’ letter was written to a wide audience of Christians, so he was addressing widespread problems among Christians. One of the problems was this: some Christians claimed to have wisdom, but did not; while other had wisdom, but were discredited. So, James wrote to clarify the difference between wisdom and fake wisdom.

If things are going pretty well "Rejoice ALWAYS" or "give thanks in ALL circumstances" feels doable. However, if you are going through a really tough time right now and you don't feel grateful at all, these words are more difficult. Sermon Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8 (NRSV)   We live in a culture that values, maybe even worships, strength. More often than not, the strength we want so badly is expressed as power-over others. Power-over means that to be stronger than someone you must demonstrate that you can over-power them. As you might guess, this often leads to violence.   In a world of violent strength, Christians have an opportunity to display the strength of gentleness and servanthood.   Join us as we investigate the upside-down strength that comes from gentleness.

Sermon Scripture and Points   1 Samuel 17:4-7 (NLT) 4 Then Goliath, a Philistine champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of Israel. He was over nine feet tall! 5 He wore a bronze helmet, and his bronze coat of mail weighed 125 pounds. 6 He also wore bronze leg armor, and he carried a bronze javelin on his shoulder. 7 The shaft of his spear was as heavy and thick as a weaver’s beam, tipped with an iron spearhead that weighed 15 pounds. His armor bearer walked ahead of him carrying a shield.     Point number 1: The armor the world brings to your spiritual fight is always gigantic.     1 Samuel 17:8-18 (NLT) 8 Goliath stood and shouted a taunt across to the Israelites. “Why are you all coming out to fight?” he called. “I am the Philistine champion, but you are only the servants of Saul. Choose one man to come down here and fight me! 9 If he kills me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, you will be our slaves! 10 I defy the armies of Israel today! Send me a man who will fight me!” 11 When Saul and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified and deeply shaken. 13 Jesse’s three oldest sons had already joined Saul’s army to fight the Philistines. 14 David was the youngest son. 16 For forty days, every morning and evening, the Philistine champion strutted in front of the Israelite army. 17 One day Jesse said to David, “Take this basket of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread, and carry them quickly to your brothers. 18 And give these ten cuts of cheese to their captain. See how your brothers are getting along, and bring back a report on how they are doing.”       1 Samuel 17:20-33 (NLT) 20 So David left the sheep with another shepherd and set out early the next morning with the gifts, as Jesse had directed him. He arrived at the camp just as the Israelite army was leaving for the battlefield with shouts and battle cries. 21 Soon the Israelite and Philistine forces stood facing each other, army against army. 22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies and hurried out to the ranks to greet his brothers. 23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, came out from the Philistine ranks. Then David heard him shout his usual taunt to the army of Israel. 24 As soon as the Israelite army saw him, they began to run away in fright. 25 “Have you seen the giant?” the men asked. “He comes out each day to defy Israel. The king has offered a huge reward to anyone who kills him. He will give that man one of his daughters for a wife, and the man’s entire family will be exempted from paying taxes!” 32 “Don’t worry about this Philistine,” David told Saul. “I’ll go fight him!” 33 “Don’t be ridiculous!” Saul replied. “There’s no way you can fight this Philistine and possibly win! You’re only a boy, and he’s been a man of war since his youth.”       Point number 2: The enemies of the One True God were the enemies of David.     1 Samuel 17:34-40 (NLT) 34 But David persisted. “I have been taking care of my father’s sheep and goats,” he said. “When a lion or a bear comes to steal a lamb from the flock, 35 I go after it with a club and rescue the lamb from its mouth. If the animal turns on me, I catch it by the jaw and club it to death. 36 I have done this to both lions and bears, and I’ll do it to this pagan Philistine, too, for he has defied the armies of the living God! 37 The Lord who rescued me from the claws of the lion and the bear will rescue me from this Philistine!” Saul finally consented. “All right, go ahead,” he said. “And may the Lord be with you!” 38 Then Saul gave David his own armor—a bronze helmet and a coat of mail.  “I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again. 40 He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.     1 Samuel 9:1-14  (NLT) There was a wealthy, influential man named Kish from the tribe of Benjamin. 2 His son Saul was the most handsome man in Israel—head and shoulders taller than anyone else in the land. 3 One day Kish’s donkeys strayed away, and he told Saul, “Take a servant with you, and go look for the donkeys.” 4 So Saul took one of the servants and traveled through the hill country of Ephraim, but they couldn’t find the donkeys anywhere. 5 Finally, Saul said to his servant, “Let’s go home. By now my father will be more worried about us than about the donkeys!” 6 But the servant said, “I’ve just thought of something! There is a man of God who lives here in this town. He is held in high honor by all the people because everything he says comes true. Let’s go find him. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.” 7 “But we don’t have anything to offer him,” Saul replied. “Even our food is gone, and we don’t have a thing to give him.” 8 “Well,” the servant said, “I have one small silver piece. We can at least offer it to the man of God and see what happens!” 9 (In those days if people wanted a message from God, they would say, “Let’s go and ask the seer,” for prophets used to be called seers.) 10 “All right,” Saul agreed, “let’s try it!”       Point number 3 in your notes: Weak Leaders deliver inferior results. Weak Christians apply insufficient discernment.     1 Samuel 9:41-49  (NLT) Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him, 42 sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy. 43 “Am I a dog,” he roared at David, “that you come at me with a stick?” And he cursed David by the names of his gods. 44 “Come over here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!” Goliath yelled. 45 David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! 47 And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!” 48 As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him. 49 Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.     Point number 4: Even the smallest weapon of the One True God is overwhelming.     1 Samuel 17:51-53 (NLT) When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah gave a great shout of triumph and rushed after the Philistines, chasing them as far as Gath 53 Then the Israelite army returned and plundered the deserted Philistine camp.
