There is an old country song titled "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden" And so it is in with a life that follows Christ. The church is not designed to make you comfortable, it is not there to keep you entertained or amused. It is not a country club. The church has one focus and that focus always is God. And for all those that commit to this there will be times we are uncomfortable.

It's Dennis Quaid's first role...with actual lines! Still not a full wardrobe, though, as he's shirtless -- but how does a pitcher named Shark fit into 1976 mental-illness drama I Never Promised You A Rose Garden? An Apollo 13 reunion, Kenickie in beads, and much more in this slightly Quaidier second episode. Pastor Rob Brooks, Tehachapi Church of the Nazarene Psalm 23 There's a very old song from back in the day and the chorus says, "I Beg Your Pardon, I Never Promised You A Rose Garden. . ." When I hear this kind of statement, I'm always a little bothered by it. It reeks of unmet expectations at best, or at least communications gone awry. Often, in our walk with God, we may find ourselves wondering, why is this or that happening to me? Why must I endure, X, Y or Z? I mean, I've committed myself to Jesus and now it seems like all is not going according to God's promises. The 23rd Psalm just might help us as we navigate the unmet expectations of what we thought God was saying when we gave our lives to Him and how we should pray as we face the realities of this world. God didn't promise us a rose garden. As a matter of fact, He told us that, "in this world we would have trouble", but Jesus tells us to "take courage, for He has overcome the world". (John 16:33)

The life of the German-born, pioneering American psychoanalyst, Frieda Fromm-Reichmann, is intriguing enough in itself, but in the biography, To Redeem One Person Is to Redeem the World: The Life of Frieda Fromm-Reichmann (Other Books, 2005), we learn that Fromm-Reichmann played an integral role in mid-century psychoanalysis. In this interview, with the author, psychologist, and historian, Gail Hornstein, we trace not only Fromm Reichmann's many accomplishments, but also the history of Chestnut Lodge where she worked for many years, her relationships with Erich Fromm and Harold Searles, as well as the cultural impact of the book written by her patient Joanne Greenberg, I Never Promised You A Rose Garden. To Redeem One Person Is to Redeem the World is essential reading for anyone interested not only in the history of American psychoanalysis, but also psychoanalysis in general.
