É a empatia. It's no secret that Steven Spielberg is fascinated with the cosmos. His latest aliens-are-among-us action thriller, “Disclosure Day,” follows a TV weatherperson (Emily Blunt) and an encryption specialist (Josh O'Connor) as they attempt to understand their connection to life beyond this planet. In doing so, they get entangled in a government cover-up. Ahead of the movie's release, Wesley Morris spent time with Spielberg and wrote a profile of him for The New York Times Magazine. The 79-year-old director's appetite for telling stories on the big screen is undiminished — he's preparing to make his first western — but Wesley writes that as Hollywood adapts to the streaming era, “the idea of a Steven Spielberg has felt endangered.” And so, there's only one person for Wesley to call when a new Spielberg drops: Eric Hynes, Wesley's pal and former co-worker from Kim's Video in New York City. They started their Spielberg conversation over 25 years ago as young cinephiles. On today's episode, it continues. Together, they consider the evolution of aliens in Spielberg's work, relive memorable onscreen sequences and think about the strength of the filmmaker's more-than-half-century canon. Along the way, they debate Spielberg's legacy, the future of blockbuster filmmaking, and whether Hollywood's legendary directors are beginning to hand the reins to a new generation.

This week on Forgotten Cinema: Now Showing, the Mikes discuss "Disclosure Day", the latest film from Steven Spielberg and one that leaves them with very different reactions.Butler really enjoys the film and finds himself appreciating it more the longer he sits with it. As someone with a long-standing interest in UFOs and the broader phenomenon, he admits some personal bias, but believes the movie succeeds because it remains focused on telling a compelling story first. The plot works, the mystery unfolds effectively, and several sequences rank among Spielberg's strongest in recent years. The ending in particular leaves a powerful impression and has Butler convinced the film will only improve on future rewatches.Field is less enthusiastic. While he acknowledges many of the film's strengths, he finds himself wanting something closer to a character-driven experience in the vein of "Contact". Both Mikes agree that Emily Blunt's Margaret may have been the more compelling choice for the film's central protagonist. Her character undergoes a clearer journey and receives meaningful answers to the questions driving her story. By comparison, Daniel often feels like a hero at the end of his arc, with mysteries about his past that are never resolved for either himself or the audience.Despite those criticisms, both Butler and Field agree that "Disclosure Day" contains some fantastic scenes, strong performances, and an ending that lingers long after the credits roll. Most importantly, both of them want to see it again, which may be the strongest endorsement of all.

It's Disclosure Day on the Book and Film Globe podcast, as host Neal Pollack and chief film critic Stephen Garrett disclose that they didn't much care for Steven Spielberg's new “the truth about aliens” film Disclosure Day. They both found the script poorly-paced and silly, and really disliked several of the film's performances, including soggy turns from Josh O'Connor, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo. Eve Hewson, Wyatt Russell, and especially Emily Blunt fare better, but they cannot get the best of a ham-handed scenario, bizarrely convoluted action sequences, and nonsensical world-building. What a mess.We get around to Backrooms this week as well. Critic Daniel Aaron joins Neal to discuss the Internet phenomenon turned box-office sensation. Backrooms is a completely fresh premise, sure to be ground down over time by bad sequels. But for now, it's all about liminal spaces, and genuinely haunting performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, as two Californians in the early 1990s who get caught in another dimension in the back of a failing furniture store. Creepy, unsettling, and weirdly funny, Backrooms will have you thinking twice before entering a strange space. Finally, Scott Gold is back on the podcast this week, talking to Neal about Spider Noir on Amazon Prime, featuring an iconic Nicolas Cage performance as a 1930s noir detective who also happens to have the power set of Spider-Man. The series is eight episodes when it should have been six, with its share of repetitive story beats. But that doesn't take away from its core pleasures: watching Cage give it his all, in a spectacularly physical comic, and semi-tragic, performance. There are excellent supporting turns as well, and enough action scenes to keep this from becoming too dull. Recommended quite highly by our two non-superpowered contributors.Regular listeners of the Book and Film Globe podcast will also notice that we have new theme music this! Spoilers for Disclosure Day. Jason and Rachel review Disclosure Day, Steven Spielberg's new alien movie starring Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Colman Domingo, Colin Firth, and Wyatt Russell. There are things to like here: Emily Blunt is great, Colman Domingo remains a human weighted blanket, and a few sequences feel like vintage Spielberg. But the movie's big alien reveal, TV station climax, confusing character logic, and “world peace / just listen” ending left us deeply frustrated. We talk Close Encounters comparisons, little green men, thumb drives, World War III, invisible fire trucks, AI-era skepticism, David Koepp, Spielberg nostalgia, and why Disclosure Day ends up as a disappointed thumbs down. Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes. While it may come as no surprise, the biggest Marvel news this week is still just as exciting as it is obvious with the revelation that Chris Evans will indeed appear in Secret Wars. While not officially confirmed by Marvel, the news broke via a social media post from March 26, that is just now gaining notice, with the actor himself telling Instagram user @comicconmomsi, "I can tell you that...I start work on the next one in a couple of months, I can tell you that," in a video message. That tracks with the projected August production starting date for Secret Wars we've discussed previously. While rumors and speculation are typically not our forte here, the rumor mill surrounding The Batman II cast warrants some attention. In May, we discussed headlines from sources like Variety and The Wrap that seemingly confirmed Sebastian Stan had been cast as Harvey Dent, as he had long been rumored to be, with Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance announced as Dent's wife and father, respectively. In hindsight, those headlines resulted from Matt Reeve's social media post where he confirmed and welcomed a number of actors as part of the film but did not actually reveal any roles. In the last week, industry insider Jeff Sneider has suggested that his sources claim that Stan will instead play Victor Zsasz and Brian Tyree Henry is set to portray Harvey. Steven Spielberg has returned to the blockbuster arena for the first time in eight years with Disclosure Day, his UFO sci-fi thriller starring Emily Blunt and Josh O'Connor, which opened to approximately $44 million domestically and $93.9 million globally, making it his biggest opening weekend ever for an original film. Meanwhile, Obsession continues its extraordinary run, adding another $19 million in week five for a domestic total of $188.3 million. Spielberg's $115 million production earned strong reviews and a B CinemaScore.Sony has released the trailer for The Social Reckoning, Aaron Sorkin's sequel to The Social Network.
