DC Goes All In: Absolute Batman, a Joker Anime, and Krypto Get Animated

Geek Freaks Headlines

DC Studios dropped three major animation announcements at Annecy this morning, and this episode breaks down all of them. The headliner is an Absolute Batman animated series with the comic's own creative team steering the ship, followed by Joker: Laugh Riot, an original anime that flips the Batman formula on its head, and a Krypto series that brings a much lighter, family-friendly energy to the slate. No manor, no money, all Batman, and that is just the start.Beyond the three big reveals, this one digs into why these announcements matter for the bigger picture. With projects like Mister Miracle from Tom King already in the works, DC is treating animation as a real priority rather than a side project. The takeaway is simple: animation has become the place where these characters can be told accurately and ambitiously, the same way Invincible and X-Men '97 proved the medium can carry the most compelling superhero stories around.00:00:00 DC Studios' Big Annecy Announcements00:00:04 Absolute Batman Gets an Animated Series00:00:29 Joker: Laugh Riot, DC's First Anime00:00:57 Krypto and the SpongeBob Connection00:01:17 Why Animation Is No Longer a Side Project for DC00:01:32 Listener Question and Sign OffAbsolute Batman is getting an animated series with Scott Snyder showrunning and artist Nick Dragotta producing, so the comic's creative team stays intact. No release date yet.The Absolute Batman comic has sold more than 6 million copies, with the first volume already on its 11th printing. This version is a working-class Bruce Wayne with no fortune, no manor, only one parent lost, and a civil engineer who builds all his own tools.Joker: Laugh Riot is an anime from WB Animation, DC Studios, and Japan's SOLA Entertainment, the studio behind The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, with the same director attached. The Joker story is original: after Batman is killed, the Joker tears through Gotham's underworld hunting the culprit, because he realizes he does not know who he is without Batman. The Krypto series is the furthest out and the most lighthearted, following Superman's dog as he runs with a gang of misfit criminals. C.H. Greenblatt of SpongeBob fame is developing it, so expect that playful energy. The bigger story is that DC is putting real weight behind animation now, with Mister Miracle from Tom King and more on the way. Following the lead of Invincible and X-Men '97, animation is where these comic-accurate stories can truly shine."If you're not on the absolute train yet, get on it. It's so good.""He works on the city during the day, fights crime at night, and he's beefy as hell.""Animation is no longer a side project for these guys. They're actually putting a lot of mustard behind this."For the latest geek news, head to GeekFreaksPodcast.com, our source for everything covered on the show.If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe wherever you get your podcasts, leave a review, and share it with a fellow geek using #GeekFreaks.Follow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thegeekfreakspodcastThreads: https://www.threads.net/@geekfreakspodcastPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/GeekFreakspodcastFrank: @franklourence79Thomas: @thomascraigviiiAre you reading Absolute Batman? Before Jason Momoa shows up in Supergirl, here's everything you need to know about Lobo. This week Zach and Mike dive into the 1990-1991 four-issue Lobo mini-series by Keith Giffen and Alan Grant, the run that created the version of the character most people actually know. The one with the space hog. The chain. The white skin and black hair. The one who is almost certainly showing up in the Supergirl film and who Mike compares, correctly, to "Wolverine if Wolverine were Deadpool."Here's what Lobo actually is: a bounty hunter from a utopian planet so peaceful they didn't even have a word for fighting. He was born wrong, got worse, and eventually committed genocide on his entire species just so he could be unique. He is now the last of his kind. He did that on purpose. The story we're covering has him transporting a prisoner across the galaxy, his fourth grade teacher, who wrote an unauthorized biography about him and whom he very much wants to kill. While being chased by space fanboys, a paramilitary senior citizens' decency committee, and the planetary police force of every planet he's stopped at along the way. There is also a spelling bee. Also this week: the Marvel Thanksgiving Day Parade float. RoboCop is in it. Hulk barely moves a clock tower. Captain America takes it very seriously. We watch the whole thing.Plus: Supergirl movie excitement, the Dean Cain callout, a Mister Miracle animated series update, and the Lobo that DC tried to reboot in 2011 who Mike did not like the nipples of.From: Lobo Mini-Series #1–4 (1990–1991) | Writer: Alan Grant | Plotter: Keith Giffen | Artist: Simon Bisley#supergirl hits theaters this week. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week on the show we have cosplay couple Aly Moon and Nick Woody to discuss their anniversary issue, a Gail Simone jam (Uncanny X-Men 18) where the well-intentioned mutant "Friendship Festival" goes sideways...and what that means for the future of their relationship. We play the X-Newlywed Game (how could we not?) and also on this episode: Wolverine throws up on Ferris wheels Horse Girl has a bad night Nightcrawler has a nice day The most on fire hospital Jubilee needs a better publicist What does any of this mean for their future as a soon-to-be married couple? Tune in to find out! Aly Moon (@Alymoonnn) is a Tennessee-based cosplayer, nail artist, lifelong Marvel nerd, and proud X-Men enthusiast. When she's not bringing superheroes to life through cosplay or creating nerdy nail art, she's probably found in her garden (because every good mutant needs a soft, earthy side too). Nicholas Woody, also known as TheComicCosplayer, is an extremely passionate cosplayer who loves bringing characters to life. Nightcrawler, Sentry, Ash Williams, and Mister Miracle are just a few examples of his portrayals. From horror movies like Evil Dead and The Shining, to comics such as Moon Knight, the new Marvel Ultimate Comics, and DC Black Label/Vertigo, and even gaming titles like Marvel Rivals and Dead by Daylight, to fandom-related content creation, Nicholas has fully embraced the geek lifestyle. When he's not traveling, creating, gaming, or thrifting, Nicholas enjoys the convention scene! Once a theater kid, always a theater kid—Nick's love for cosplay evolved from his love for acting and theater. Cosplay allows you to be whoever you want to be rather than hoping to play the role you want, which really drew him to the hobby. Formerly based in Texas, and now residing in central Tennessee, Nicholas looks forward to a bright future with his fiancé Aly as they share their passions together in geekdom. There has to be an easier way to do this but why bother when you can put countless living being in some sort of peril. We also got Scottish pirates, that one kid from STRANGER THINGS, tactless hotel doormen and a nearly tragic birthday surprise for Clark.Plus, Jen and Shawn discuss Metallica at Mile High Stadium and the shocking appearance of really good Mister Miracle cosplay in a random 80's horror flick.*** PROPER COMIC BOOK DISCUSSION STARTS AT 00:20:39 ***Promo: MOVING KRYPTONIAN IMAGES (https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/it-all-comes-back-to-superman-series-two/id1720158262)Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter / Instagram / Facebook / Threads / Bluesky or email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.comAlso, get hip to all of our episodes on YouTube in its own playlist! https://bit.ly/WorstCollectionEverYTDownload the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and wherever you get your favorite shows. GET YOUR MULTIVERSE NEWS MERCH HERE:https://multiverse-news-shop.fourthwall.com/In a peek behind the curtain, James Gunn shared with Rolling Stone this week that the Milly Alcock-lead film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will now just be called Supergirl. This is similar to July's Superman, which started out with the title Superman: Legacy. Gunn shared that he and his team do what he calls “premortems,” where they attempt to suss out issues with projects prior to release rather than reacting on the back end. The shortening of titles has come out of those discussions. In the same article, Gunn got candid about the state of Batman in the DCU and the complexities of navigating the character with Matt Reeves' adaptation in consideration or making it his own. Lastly, Gunn announced today that actor Tom Rhys Harries will play Basil Karlo/Clayface in the film set to be released in September 2026.Live action remakes continue to rule at the box office, with this weekend's How to Train Your Dragon capturing the top spot opening to a global $197 million. A24's romantic comedy Materialists starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, opened to a modest $11 million domestically, but goes down in studio history as A24's third highest debut at the box office. Next weekend Sony gives us 28 Years Later and Pixar releases Elio.Nosferatu director Robert Eggers is tackling the classic Charles Dickens story, A Christmas Carol. Eggers is on record as never wanting to make a film set in a modern age, and the ghost story that is A Christmas Carol seems right up his alley. Though unconfirmed, Willem Dafoe is likely set to play the main character of Ebenezer Scrooge as Dafoe has been in three of Eggers films.Tommy Wirkola will return to direct Violent Night 2, the sequel to the Christmas-themed action movie released in 2022, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. David Harbour, who starred in the first film, will also return. The sequel is currently dated for December 4, 2026.Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis are set to reprise their respective roles as Lone Starr and Dark Helmet in the new Spaceballs movie from Amazon MGM Studios, with Keke Palmer and Lewis Pullman also joining the cast. The original film's director and star, Mel Brooks - who will turn 99 this month - will also feature in the cast once again, reprising his role as Yogurt. The film is currently set to release in 2027.On the animation side of DC Studios, Warner Bros. announced a new series called Mister Miracle, based on the comic series written by renowned writer Tom King who will also be the showrunner. Mister Miracle is an escape artist character who is a celebrity in the comic book world he lives in.Paramount+ has renewed Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the series for a fifth and final six-episode season. Production on the upcoming season will begin later this year.Pixar Animation Studios offered an exclusive first look at its upcoming features — including Hoppers and Toy Story 5 — and announced a brand-new original production, Gatto, during a studio presentation on Friday at the Annecy international animation film festival as part of a broader showcase that also included extensive footage from Pixar's 2025 release Elio.Gatto will be directed by Luca filmmaker Enrico Casarosa, follows Nero, a water-hating black cat living in the picturesque city of Venice, Italy, who befriends Maya, a lonely street musician.Glenn Close and Billy Porter have joined the cast of Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Close will play Drusilla Sickle, the cruel escort to the District 12 Tributes, while Porter snagged the role of Magno Stift, her estranged husband and the Tributes' uninspired designer. Today, Jhaleil Swaby was also added to the cast as Panache, a career tribute from District 1.

AND, there's a conspiracy theory gaining traction that Jack murdered America's most beloved champion.  Now, Local Man, already in over his head, is drawn into another twisted case with dark ties to his superhero past.” But first the boys discuss America's heartthrob, Luigi Mangione!  Anthony introduces a new sound effect for Cody.  It's very obvious when Cody doesn't like the sound of something.  We learn more about some characters' past in this volume along with getting a great tripping sequence with Crossjack. Anthony schools us an array of original Image characters that show up in this book. Jake & Anthony give brief thoughts on the Mister Miracle book by Tom King & Mitch Gerads. Is Crossjack's true power to cuck people? Is our fan Trey from New Zealand still out there? We briefly talk our excitement for the new DC film universe. To all our Commies and new listeners, start listening around episode 8! Cody tries to escape being Hodag and lord more to laugh at & learn.  Tune in now! Now he's about to release his first non-Tom™ comic in years, working with Tim Seeley on the upcoming Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Features #1. Plus you can learn more about his upcoming docu-series, The United States of Bourbon.
