This is similar to July's Superman, which started out with the title Superman: Legacy. Gunn shared that he and his team do what he calls “premortems,” where they attempt to suss out issues with projects prior to release rather than reacting on the back end. The shortening of titles has come out of those discussions. In the same article, Gunn got candid about the state of Batman in the DCU and the complexities of navigating the character with Matt Reeves' adaptation in consideration or making it his own. Lastly, Gunn announced today that actor Tom Rhys Harries will play Basil Karlo/Clayface in the film set to be released in September 2026.Live action remakes continue to rule at the box office, with this weekend's How to Train Your Dragon capturing the top spot opening to a global $197 million.

V is for... VISION, 2016's Eisner award winning series by writer Tom King and artist Gabriel Hernandez Walta. King should be a familiar name to you by now, as we've read more than a few of his works on this podcast, including Mister Miracle and the Human Target, two stories about troubled superheroes. And this book is no different. The Vision actually debuted in the Avengers way back when in 1968, when he was first designed to kill Earth's Mightiest Heroes, but soon became one of them...falling in love with the Scarlet Witch along the way. This same story arc also played out on the big screen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where the Vision was played by Tom Bettany...and pretty much had his girlfriend rip his brain out of his head... But this isn't really a story about WandaVision, in THIS comic Vision just wants an ordinary life ― with a wife and two children, a home in the suburbs, perhaps even a dog. So he built them. Sound familiar? Only this time Vision literally built his wife, kids, and dog. As in they are sentient robots. WHAT COULD GO WRONG?
In this episode of Back Issue Banter, we take you into a new world...The Fourth World! When artist Jack Kirby left Marvel Comics in the early 1970s, it sent shock waves throughout the industry. Kirby had visions of creating a new group of characters whose adventures were like nothing you'd ever seen. And they were so wild that DC Comics had to publish them! The most popular of them was Mister Miracle, an escape artist like no other! We take a look at the first four issues of Mister Miracle and examine a group of characters and concepts that are Pure Unfiltered KirbyEver heard of Boom Tubes, Mother Boxes, or Doctor Bedlam? Well, you will after listening to this episode for Granny Goodness' sake!

This week the boys are talking Mister Miracle, other Tom King books, the writers strike, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and more!
Sometimes we meet people and know right away that we'll be fast friends for life. This is not one of those times. On today's episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner things go off the rails quickly. Fair warning: this episode is very, very silly. I chat with enemy turned lover turned friend turned stranger turned frenemy turned criminal associate (you know that old trope) Comics Heartthrob Grant Stoye to talk about SIDEQUEST. We also talk about Grant's fear of scrapple and take a deep dive into his job history. I also turn the tables on Grant and ask him the 5 questions he poses to his guests on his Into the Comics Cave podcast. After successfully crowdfunding 5 issues, Scout Comics is publishing SIDEQUEST, with some new covers, and issue #1 is out June 14th. SIDEQUEST is one of my top 5 comic series of the past few years. It's right up there with King/Gerads' Mister Miracle and Snyder/Lemire's A.D.: After Death. Part D&D fantasy adventure and part slice of life adulthood/relationship comic, it effortlessly stitches the two together with fantastic work by Alaire Racicot, Martina Bonnani, and Toben Racicot. You are definitely going to want to add SIDEQUEST to your pull list and check out Grant's website. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Tom King is a comic book writer (and former CIA Officer) that has taken some of the most legendary characters and given some of the most unique takes on them. Whether you love him or hate him, he has created tales that have influenced the continuity and development of the DC comic universe. This week we look back on his origins and some of his most memorable (and controversial) titles in his portfolio. Jay and Josh get royal on Superhero Suite.
The Month Of Love comes to a close as we discuss our favorite comic book interior artists from our history of reading comics. We also LOVE to bring you our look at the trailers from this years Super Ball in The Week In Geek, the comics we're going to be grabbing in The List for 02/22, a Dramatic Reading from Mister Miracle #1 and plenty of craft beer reviews. In their long-awaited return, Phil & Jake rank patriarchy, the legendary comics creator Jack Kirby, and the soft drink Fanta on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Bully sticks really are made from beef penis. "Work for hire" is the situation that an illustrator like Kirby, or a session musician, might work under. He was paid cash for his work but didn't retain any ownership. At the time, the idea was that the work was ephemeral trash anyways; but now, years later, it's proven to be valuable. The Fourth World was Kirby's set of fantasy/science-fiction stories at DC. He got to do pretty much what he wanted and he went nuts with it. Mister Miracle was maybe the character that's most closely identified with Kirby. He's an escape artist refugee who lives in the suburbs and is married to an action heroine. Star Wars really seems to pull from Kirby's work. Doctor Doom is a very fun comic-book villain created by Kirby (and Stan Lee). Stan Lee worked with Kirby in the 1960s and co-created almost all of the early Marvel characters and stories with him. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay is an acclaimed novel by Michael Chabon where one of the characters is based (partly) on Kirby. Here's Kirby's original drawing of Captain America punching-out Hitler. The Banshees of Inisherin is a 2022 film partly about legacy that explores the question “Does being a decent person matter?” Thundarr the Barbarian was a 1980s cartoon about a post-apocalyptic adventurer. Kirby did some design work and by all accounts was paid fairly and treated well. Kamandi was a post-apocalyptic comic about the last boy on Earth, an Earth now populated by talking animals. It seems like it was heavily influenced by Planet of the Apes, even though Kirby hadn't seen the movie when he created the comic. Holy Mountain is a film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky, financed partly by John Lennon, which is difficult to explain. It's surrealistic, absurd and mind-blowing, and it really seems Kirby-influenced. Kirby Krackle is a visual effect that Kirby was known for. If there was energy coursing through something, he might illustrate it with weird dots around it. The Neil Gaiman quote that Jake recites is from the book Kirby: King of Comics by Mark Evanier. O.M.A.C. (One Man Army Corps) is a truly bonkers comic written and drawn by Jack Kirby. It appears as if Glenn Danzig did know Kirby personally, and even worked with him. Here's an interview that Danzig conducted with Kirby. Mezzo Mix is totally the most normal thing in the world. We discuss Kit-Kats in Japan, which have been incredibly successful there, in part because their name sort of sounds like "good luck" in Japanese. There are many, many variations on the traditional Kit-Kat flavor in Japan. Some of these have come to America as well. The Fantanas ads were a throwback to an earlier style of ads. The premise is that sexy babes with soft drinks show up and refresh people. Here's a good example, and here's one in Spanish. Other sodas discussed include Crush, Orangina, Surge & Josta. Jake drank is half-Fanta at the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando, which is near Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville. He paired it with some Old Florida Original Gourmet Chips. The fever has really passed on hard seltzer. Now that the dust has settled, in the cold light of day we can say it was ranked fairly. Calamari isn't good, it's just a rubbery mass. Hulk Hogan was a boring wrestler who's had a really negative impact on the world. Phil thinks Aerosmith are dire, just absolute bottom level garbage, and he's Phil has banned from his life with a zero tolerance policy. The Killing Joke is a comic that ended up steering the trajectory of the character of the Joker almost permanently after it came out. For better or worse, the story of the day the Joker finally went too far has stuck with audiences. In the comic the Joker says this line: All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day. The Joker, The Killing Joke (1988) But what if other members of Batman's rogues had their one bad day? With DC's series of Batman: One Bad Day, we are now getting to see what those are from some of the biggest names in the industry. The series kicked off with Tom King, Mitch Gerads, and Clayton Cowles telling the story of The Riddler's one bad day. Tom King and Mitch Gerads are a Eisner Award winning duo who's previous joint work on titles like Mister Miracle, Strange Adventures, and more has cemented them as giants in the industry. Tom King and Mitch Gerads portrayal of The Riddler is a dark and calculated turn by the silly man in the green get up that pushes the character to the limit with a beautifully crafted story and artwork to match. It's a story that dives deeper into the character himself but defines his origins with more gravitas and weight than he was previously given. This story has the makings to be the definitive Riddler story for years to come. On this episode, Tom King and Mitch Gerads come on to dive deeper into the story, the art, and the themes of the book. This episode is filled to the brim with SPOILERS so please read the issue before listening to this in depth discussion. It's a great conversation discussing the duo and the story they got to kick off the One Bad Day series with. The comic is available anywhere you get your comics. Welcome to a BONUS episode of Pop Culture Leftovers where Brian and Paul Hart (Apple to Oranges podcast) talk to comic book writer Tom King (Vision, The Sherriff of Babylon, Batman, Mister Miracle) and comic book artist Elsa Charretier (The Infinite Loop, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, Star Wars Adventures) about their new book LOVE EVERLASTING from Image Comics hitting comic book store shelves on August 10th 2022. “In Love Everlasting, Joan Peterson discovers that she is trapped in an endless, terrifying cycle of “romance”—a problem to be solved, a man to marry—and every time she falls in love she's torn from her world and thrust into another teary saga.” It was a super fun conversation with both of them as we talk about why we loved this comic book and how it's a mix of different genres and a wild take on romance stories. This is not your typical romance comic book. Anything can happen and it usually does. It feels like Quantum Leap meets The Notebook but only this time there's a cowboy who wants to kill Allie. I loved talking with both of these 2 talented creators. Please, do yourself a favor and add this comic book to your pull list at your local comic book shop or order online!
