Uh oh! The gang is back talking all things Paul Bartel on another episode of BARTEL ME SOMETHING GOOD and this time not only are we yacking about 1976's HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, the made-for-a-bet directing debut of both Joe Dante AND Alan Arkush (and featuring Paul Bartel, Dick Miller and Mary Woronov among many other familiar faces), but we also start with a very special episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents from 1985 directed by Tim Burton(!), featuring music by Danny Elfman(!) and starring Griffin Dunne, Laraine Newman and - wait for it - Paul Bartel as a pretentious art critic. It's even.. uh.. sort of an adaptation of a Ray Bradbury story. All that and so much more, so enjoy! The post Episode 290 – Bartel Me Something Good – Hollywood Boulevard (1976) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

Can we actually separate the art from the artist? Well, if you're willing to contort yourself around some pretty terrible behavior, the art you are separating from the artists involved better be worth it. From bleak to dark, this list and the stories involved might make the squeamish squeam - fair warning! Who else to help us navigate these treacherous waters than our old dear friends from Milwaukee, Chris Van Gompel, DJ Hostettler and Dixie Jacobs. the recent Sydney Sweeney / eugenics dog whistling campaign is not only deeply stupid, but sadly, brought to mind my ill-fated attempt several years ago to revive Sears Roebuck's once-vaunted Toughskins brand. An expensive-to-produce television commercial featuring adolescents declaring “we've got really average to below average jeans” had to be scrapped following legal action from Kent, OH Oi revivalists who'd since claimed the Toughskins name. Though this was not the first or last time I've run afoul of someone adjacent to the Wheelchair Full Of Old Men media empire, it was probably the most costly. My advice to the owners of American Eagle is simple : change the name of the company to American Beagle (EVERYONE LIKES BEAGLES) and license the Toughskins' “Oingo Boingo Ain't Oi” for the resulting campaign. Everyone's a winner (except for perhaps, Danny Elfman).
From Sam Raimi, the acclaimed directer of the Evil Dead Trilogy AND Spider-Man Trilogy comes this action thriller which FEELS as if it was based upon a comic book though was actually an original concept developed by Raimi when he was unable to land the rights for The Shadow back in the late '80's. Oscar-nominee Liam Neeson (Schindler's List, Taken) stars as Payton, a mild-mannered scientist trying to develop synthetic skin. Oscar-winner Frances McDormand (Fargo, Nomadland) plays his attorney girlfriend Julie who uncovers a real estate scam, and Emmy-winner Larry Drake (LA Law, Dr. Giggles) plays Durant, the mob enforcer who comes along with his goons to rough up Peyton for the evidence, brutalize him, and leave him for dead after dipping much of his body in acid leaving him burned all over....only Peyton isn't dead. And what results is a wild, crazy, and quotable revenge thriller which came out 35 years ago this summer and developed into a cult hit.WARNING: GRAPHIC VIOLENCE PORTRAYED VIA MOVIE CLIPSHost & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
TIM BURTON'S BELOVED '90s CLASSIC!! Edward Scissorhands Full Movie Reaction Watch Along: / thereelrejects Support The Channel By Getting Some REEL REJECTS Aparrel! https://www.rejectnationshop.com/ As we gear up for Tim Burton's return & Wednesday Season 2 on Netflix, Aaron & Johnald Give their Fresh-Eyed Edward Scissorhands Reaction, Recap, Commentary, Analysis & Full Movie Spoiler Review!! Aaron Alexander & John Humphrey bring their hearts and scissors to the screen in this Reaction & Review of Tim Burton's 1990 gothic fairytale classic Edward Scissorhands. Starring Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Sweeney Todd) in one of his most iconic roles, the film follows Edward, an unfinished artificial man with scissors for hands, as he's discovered living alone in a dark mansion and brought into the pastel-colored suburbs by the kind-hearted Peg Boggs, played by Diane Wiest (Parenthood, The Birdcage). As Edward struggles to fit into the conformist community, he forms a tender connection with Peg's daughter Kim, portrayed by Winona Ryder (Stranger Things, Heathers), setting the stage for a moving and tragic romance. The film also stars Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine, Argo) as Peg's husband Bill, Anthony Michael Hall (The Breakfast Club, Weird Science) as the antagonistic Jim, Kathy Baker (Picket Fences, The Age of Adaline) as nosy neighbor Joyce, and horror legend Vincent Price (House of Wax, The Fly) in a poignant final role as Edward's inventor. With its unforgettable visual style, Danny Elfman's haunting score, and deeply emotional themes of loneliness, creativity, and acceptance, Edward Scissorhands is one of Burton's most beloved films. Key scenes like Edward trimming hedges and dog hair, the snowy dance moment with Kim, and the heartbreaking ending in the attic have become iconic in pop culture history. Welcome, all True Believers, to another episode of the Video Store Podcast. This week, I've got four films showcasing the superhero genre, long before the big superhero boom of the late 90s/early 00s that's still going strong today. Put on your mask, your spandex, and join me on the couch for a movie marathon that's, well, super!Batman: The Movie (1966)First up is Batman: The Movie from 1966. A spinoff of the popular TV show, this theatrical film is one for the ages. Still fun and funny, Batman: The Movie is a film that the whole family can sit down and enjoy, whether they've seen any of the Adam West/Burt Ward TV series. Make a bowl of popcorn and sit down with your partner in crime-fighting to enjoy Batman: The Movie. Dick Tracy (1990)One of the more underrated films of this era is 1990's Dick Tracy, directed by and starring Warren Beatty. This is a noir detective story in yellow. Filmed like a living comic book with a score by Danny Elfman, songs by Stephen Sondheim and Madonna, Dick Tracy is a film not to be missed. Put on your yellow trenchcoat, and I'll join you on the couch for a comic book classic that too few people have seen. I'm on my way! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)Order a pizza and settle in for a fun action comedy that's sure to please everyone. 1990's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brings the comic by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird to life with puppetry and costuming by Jim Henson's creature shop, a great soundtrack, and fantastic stunt and action sequences. You'll love every second of being a turtle with this film. The Phantom (1996)Charming pulpy goodness awaits you when you push play on The Phantom from 1996. Starring Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson, Treat Williams, and Patrick McGoohan, this is another underrated classic of comic book film lore not to be missed. Join the very first superhero to wear spandex and slam evil with The Phantom. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! This post is public so feel free to share it. This is a public episode. Clive Barker's Nightbreed is the cinematic equivalent of an overstuffed trunk at a goth rave—wildly imaginative, beautifully adorned, and totally incapable of deciding what it wants to be. Packed with jaw-dropping creature designs, luscious makeup work, and a thrilling Danny Elfman score that pulses with dark fantasy energy, Nightbreed sets the table for a full-course horror feast. Unfortunately, the meal comes out half-cooked thanks to tonal confusion and a protagonist who drifts through the story like a half-deflated pool float. Adapted from Barker's novella Cabal, the film tells the story of Boone, a tormented man drawn to the subterranean world of Midian—a hidden city of monsters, outcasts, and literal night-breed. It wants to be a dark fairytale, a slasher, and a misunderstood superhero origin story all at once. And it kind of is... but not in a good way. Serial killer subplots rub awkwardly against messianic chosen-one arcs, while police shootouts interrupt poetic monster mythology. It's like watching Hellraiser crash into X-Men, then take a wrong turn through Copland. Still, if you're a fan of practical effects and monster lore, Nightbreed is a visual banquet. The creature makeup is top-tier—each Nightbreed has their own unique look and feel, some terrifying, some oddly beautiful, all memorable. The world of Midian is fascinating in concept, with real potential to launch a whole franchise of supernatural antiheroes (which it almost did). But anchoring all of this is Boone—a man so passive and charisma-deprived it's a wonder the monsters didn't just vote for someone else. His transformation from haunted man to reluctant savior is so subdued it barely registers, making it hard to care when the bullets start flying and Midian burns. Nightbreed deserves credit for aiming high, but its soaring ambitions are clipped by structural chaos and a limp lead. Watch it for the monsters, the mood, and the Elfman score—but don't expect a satisfying story to match the spectacle.

A classically trained guitarist who studied composition at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Manhattan native Ben Greenberg is a prolific record producer, engineer, songwriter, and performer who coheres conservatory training with a deep history across many different genres of underground music.Known as a founding member of respected industrial/metal group Uniform and a former member of The Men, Zs, and many more, Greenberg has been described by Ben Ratliff of the New York Times as “a good musician [...] and boss of his own one-man guitar project, Hubble.” Ben's rich and varied performance history ranges from over two decades touring with bands to performing for legendary composers like Glenn Branca and Terry Riley. In the year 2000 Greenberg began assisting Grammy-award winning engineer Mike Marciano at Systems Two Recording in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. It was here that he learned the fundamentals of recording on 2” tape alongside early Pro Tools systems. He would go on to build his own recording studio in Brooklyn (Python Patrol) and work out of world-class studios all around the globe (Electrical Audio, The Magic Shop, Strange Weather, The Pool, Sonic Ranch). Greenberg's studio credits include Danny Elfman, Depeche Mode, Drab Majesty, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Junglepussy, Show Me The Body, Drew McDowall, Black Marble, and Christeene, among many others. His process attends to the essence of the artist's vision and exacts a cultivated philosophy of sound upon them. The result is something between organic and synthetic: A magic that locks in the music's emotional resonance with the listener.Since the 2010s, Greenberg has produced and mixed award-winning scores for film and television. He is the principal engineer to the scores of composer Brian McComber (ex-Dirty Projectors), including the A24 productions It Comes At Night and Krisha, as well as Kingdom of Silence (Showtime), 16 Shots (Showtime), Little Woods (Neon), Mickey and The Bear (Utopia), and Fair Play (Netflix), among others. Greenberg was Randall Dunn's mix assistant for the Jóhann Jóhannsson score to Panos Cosmatos' 2018 film, Mandy (SpectreVision), and Dunn's co-engineer for the 2022 score to Julio Torres' Problemista (A24). Greenberg has also mixed Ella Van Der Woude's scores for Something You Said Last Night (Elevation Pictures) and Silver Haze (EMU Films), and in 2024 he won a Cinema Audio Society award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing - Documentary, for his stereo and surround mixes of JD Samson's score for Sam Green's 32 Sounds (DofMP).IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN:Starting music production at a young ageFinding jobs in the music industryDealing with parents who might not understand your passionsWorking on metal, jazz, and everything in betweenSwitching your workflow for different genresUnderstanding what to listen for with compressionHow to approach a new mixWhy volume and panning are your most important toolsDetermining when plugins are worth purchasing Working with Danny ElfmanPurposely doing lessTo learn more about Ben Greenberg, visit: https://circularruin.com/Ben-GreenbergLooking for 1-on-1 feedback and training to help you create pro-quality mixes?Check out my coaching program Amplitude and apply to join:https://masteryourmix.com/amplitude/ Want additional help with your music productions? For tips on how to improve your mixes, visit: https://masteryourmix.com/ Download your FREE copy of the Ultimate Mixing Blueprint:

For our 5th episode we are bringing you a celebration of the truly weird and utterly independent with a double feature of reviews. Starting off the festivities our solo host Cameron Scott does a short dive into the 1991 alien invasion slasher "THERE'S NOTHING OUT THERE" that is surprisingly enough a first time watch for him. This weird slice of fried gold horror comedy is such a wild ride that we highly recommend wearing your seatbelts. {You have been pre-warned of the green alien slime!} This review is followed by a "How The F%$K Did That Get Made" segment with hosts and filmmakers Marcus Koch and Cameron Scott dissecting the 1980 cult classic "FORBIDDEN ZONE" directed by the legendary Richard Elfman and starring Susan Tyrrell, Herve Villechaiz ; and a supporting cast that includes Joe Spinell and Danny Elfman. Our hosts will take you on a trip through the mad and macabre musical adventures of a girl on a trip through the 6th Dimension through a portal in the family basement. This movie has to be seen to be believed. Join us in celebration the these two truly insane and definitely weird movie! "Why does it feel so good to be sooooo bad?"
Keaton SimonsTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Keaton Simons. Keaton has been a Hollywood fixture in the music & film industry since he was a little kid. Keaton's parents, and grandparents have been in the film & television business for decades. His grandfather was a screenwriter for some of the most decorated & loved films in history, and his parents have both starred in & written some of the most beloved projects in the business. Keaton started off singing and acting in projects as a small child and quickly fell in love with playing music. In this episode, Keaton and I chat about his early years and some of those early projects. We then transition into his diving into the music scene. I ask him about his moving to Nashville, and some of the projects he has worked on as a musician. Keaton has played with some of the biggest names in music, like: Snoop Dogg, Danny Elfman, Jason Mraz, Pharcyde, Darryl McDaniels, Chris Cornell, Gnarles Barkley, and is currently the lead guitarist for Brett Young. I ask him about each of these projects, and Keaton shares fun stories of working with these music icons. Keaton explains what a musical director is and how he has been able to translate artists' musical ideas, into fully realized products. Naturally we talk about why some of the biggest musical stars of today are moving to Nashville, and what that city has to offer artists in the local the music scene. He even lets me play one of the songs he & Jason Mraz co-wrote! Keaton is currently on a world tour with country music showman Brett Young. If they are playing near you, you won't want to miss them!

Based upon the comic strip created in 1931 by Chester Gould, this eye-popping live-action adaptation was long planned by Oscar-winning director Warren Beatty (Reds, Heaven Can Wait) who also elected to star as the titular square-jawwed crime fighter sporting a bright yellow jacket. Finally green-lit and released by Disney in the wake of the breakout success the prior year of Tim Burton's Batman, the studio was hoping that it could duplicate the mega-blockbuster success of that comic book adaptation, backing its release with loads of marketing hype AND three different soundtrack albums including an assortment of original songs written by Tony-winning songwriting stage legend Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story, Into the Woods) and performed one of its co-stars....that would be Madonna who played Breathtless Mahoney, who is also a key femme fatale for the story. She is joined by completely STACKED cast by Paul Sorvino, Mandy Patinkin, Glenne Headley, Charlie Korsmo, Charles Durning, James Caan, Dustin Hoffman, AND Al Pacino who plays the film's main villain Big Boy Caprice. Alas the film did solid box office but did not live up to the Batman-level hype...though it DID set a record for most Oscars won by a comic book adaptation with three for Best Makeup, Best Original Song, and Best Art Direction. This record of three Oscars would not be matched for another 28 years until it was eventually tied by another Disney comic book release, Black Panther. The Superhero Show Show #581Spider-Man the Animated Series: Mysterio's ReturnThe Superhero Show Show: Unmasking Mysterio's Return in “The Haunting of Mary Jane Watson”!This week on The Superhero Show Show, your hosts swing back into the eerie heart of Spider-Man: The Animated Series with season 4, episode 9 — “The Haunting of Mary Jane Watson.” And no, you're not imagining things — Mysterio's Return is real, it's theatrical, and it's just as mind-bending as you'd hope. The team dives deep into this episode's ghostly twists, romantic tension, and one of the show's most atmospheric villains staging a comeback like only he can.Illusions of the Past: Mysterio's Return and the Fracturing of RealityThe conversation kicks off with the hosts marveling at the bold reappearance of Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio, who was presumed dead but now haunts Mary Jane's dreams—and possibly her reality. They discuss how Mysterio's Return flips the show into near horror territory, with trippy hallucinations, supernatural scares, and MJ slowly unraveling under the weight of visions she can't explain. The podcasters dissect how the show smartly uses Mysterio's talent for illusion to blur the line between psychological thriller and superhero adventure. Is MJ really seeing ghosts? Or is this just another one of Mysterio's elaborate productions? Either way, the hosts agree: it's an episode that plays like The Sixth Sense meets Spider-Man, long before that was cool.Spider-Man, the Protector... and the HauntedAs MJ starts doubting her own sanity, Peter takes center stage as the concerned boyfriend and relentless investigator. The podcasters discuss how the episode deepens Peter and MJ's relationship, showing his emotional support and vulnerability as he tries to shield her from a past neither of them fully understands. The haunting leads to revelations about MJ's missing memories and mysterious disappearance earlier in the series—a thread the hosts are thrilled to see finally tugged. They also spotlight how the episode makes excellent use of gothic set pieces, ghostly lighting, and Danny Elfman-esque music cues to sell the haunted-house vibe. And when Mysterio's Return is finally confirmed, it's a grand, dramatic moment that sends chills — not because he's physically imposing, but because of how well he manipulates fear.Curtain Call: The Phantom of the Soundstage Lives OnIn the closing segment, the hosts give big praise to The Haunting of Mary Jane Watson for raising emotional stakes while honoring its comic book roots. They applaud the decision to bring Mysterio back in a way that feels fresh, emotionally loaded, and uniquely suited to animation's surreal potential. The haunting isn't just about ghosts — it's about trauma, memory, and unresolved loss. And with Mysterio's Return, the show delivers one of its most hauntingly human villains.Links and ResourcesMissed our previous episodes of Spider-Man the Animated Series? Send us a textHave you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? Tim Burton's 1989 Batman transformed not just how we see the Dark Knight, but how Hollywood approaches superhero films entirely. When Michael Keaton was announced as Batman, fans were outraged. A petition with 50,000 signatures protested the decision. Even Batman creator Bob Kane expressed doubt. Fast forward to today, and many consider Keaton the definitive live-action Batman, perfectly balancing Bruce Wayne's sophistication with Batman's brooding intensity.Jack Nicholson's Joker performance remains legendary. After negotiating a percentage of box office and merchandise sales (earning him between $50-90 million), Nicholson delivered a villain for the ages - theatrical, unpredictable, and genuinely menacing. His iconic line about dancing with the devil still sends chills down spines decades later. What makes this film special is how it broke from convention. Rather than beginning with Batman's origin story, Burton introduces him as an established vigilante, gradually revealing his past through carefully placed flashbacks. The film's gothic visual style, Danny Elfman's unforgettable score, and practical effects created a Gotham City that feels tangible and timeless.Batman grossed $411 million worldwide, holding the record for highest-grossing superhero film until 2002's Spider-Man. More importantly, it proved comic book adaptations could be serious artistic and commercial ventures, paving the way for everything from Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy to today's superhero renaissance. What's your favorite Batman film? Does Keaton still hold the crown as the best Batman, or has another actor claimed the cowl? Share your thoughts and join the conversation!Support the show

A new podcast episode of "Sound Speed Action" is out now — and with it we start at the beginning with the 1996 thriller “Mission Impossible” to kick off this series.Brian DePalma (Scarface, Carlito's Way) adapts the beloved thriller series for the big screen in a way that no one else can. He has a style all to himself. A really fun thing with this movie is that there is always so much detail and information to be taken from any scene you are watching in this movie. In every viewing you will definitely have a moment of “oh I didn't notice that before!”The action set pieces from the initial embassy job, to the Langley break-in scene, to the TGV helicopter chase — this movie set the bar high for action!Did we mention this movie also has a crazy fun cast? Tom Cruise, Jon Voight, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno and Vanessa Redgrave!Danny Elfman makes this movie a thrill with his exciting and dramatic soundtrack which is made only better by Lalo Schifrin's original Mission Impossible theme track and a sneaky inclusion of music too by The Cranberries and U2 members Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr.The gadgets that don't always work, the tension created by ultra-silent moments during missions (Langley), the stunts, the fights — this movie is an absolute ride. One area that we were a little split on with this movie is that DePalma does a great job at trusting his audience to pay attention, read between the lines, and figure things out themselves. The other side of that is that this movie has been critiqued by some saying that the plot at times can feel a little overly complicated. Still, whatever view you have there, it's hard to deny how fun and original this movie was (and still is), at the time it was released.“Mission Impossible” is streaming now on Paramount Plus and Prime Video and is available to rent and buy on all platforms too. As a boy, Danny Elfman showed no interest in music, but he's made up for it ever since, earning Grammy and Emmy awards, Oscar nominations, and the roar of the crowd in live concerts around the world. His historic collaboration with director Tim Burton began with Pee-wee's Big Adventure and shows no signs of stopping. His theme music for The Simpsons is just one way he remains in our consciousness between film scoring gigs. Leonard and Jessie love his passion for what he does—and does so well.

Kirk picks apart not one, not two, but twenty one micro-songs by the great They Might Be Giants. What's that blue thing doing here? Who's knocking on the wall? And for that matter, who's that standing out the window? It's time to answer those questions and many more, as Kirk delves into The Might Be Giants' singular collection of mini-songs, "Fingertips." It's a stylistic smorgasbord of sound, with everything from jazz to rock to lounge to... honestly, genre doesn't exist and "Fingertips" proves it. Each tiny song shines for its brief moment of life, and then lives on forever in your imagination.
