Our next guest is an absolute titan of modern guitar. She is a Berklee College of Music graduate who went from tearing up the solo underground to sharing stages with icons like Steve Vai and Guthrie Govan. Whether she is shredding animated metal riffs on tour with Dethklok, holding down the stage with Danny Elfman, or shooting 10-foot flames out of her guitar in Las Vegas for Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson ONE, her precision and melodic voice on the instrument are unmatched. She is fresh off the release of her incredible, synesthesia-inspired fourth studio album, Eventide, and she finally has her brand-new, ultra-purple signature Ibanez guitar, 'The Answer,' in her hands. Today on Verbal Shenanigans... the phenomenal NILI BROSH!" We also talk about a tree hitting Scott's house, tell some tales of gross comics and play a game called "Axe or Ailment." Have a listen!

In today's episode Kyler sits down with Los Angeles singer-songwriter Bella Beau to explore the deeply visual qualities of her music. The literary podcast found a natural connection in her cinematic single "Mask of Flowers," which she notes is heavily inspired by her vivid dreams, the gothic styling of Tim Burton, and the dark themes of The Picture of Dorian Gray. The conversation highlights her early immersion in the L.A. music scene, where her childhood fascination with film composers like Danny Elfman eventually led her from opera camp to performing live sets. Her unique style seamlessly blends the languid delivery of classic jazz vocalists like Julie London with the bold art-pop styling of David Bowie. Make sure to listen to the end to hear the new single "Mask of Flowers," and keep up-to-date for upcoming singles by following her socials below. Thanks for listening!---Episode Links:BellaBeauMusic.comListen to Bella Beau on SpotifyInstagram: @bellabeaumusicTikTok: @bellabeaumusicYouTube: @bellabeaumusic
Welcome to the Video Store Podcast. The balloons are up. The popcorn machine is running full blast. The sno-cone machine is free today. Here at the Video Store Podcast, we're celebrating 100 episodes! For this special anniversary, we wanted to do something worthy of the occasion. No clip-show flashbacks. No “greatest hits” countdown. Instead, we headed behind the counter and pulled out four of the biggest VHS releases of all time, the movies that didn't just dominate the box office, but helped define the home video revolution. These were the rentals everyone wanted. The tapes that were always checked out on Friday night. The films that transformed the VCR from a luxury item into the centerpiece of family entertainment. For our 100th episode, we're revisiting four legendary films that helped build video store culture as we knew it.Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)Directed by Nicholas Meyer, this sequel took the Star Trek franchise in a sharper, more dramatic direction. Admiral James T. Kirk faces his greatest adversary, Khan Noonien Singh, in a tense and deeply personal battle of strategy, revenge, and sacrifice. With Ricardo Montalbán delivering one of science fiction's most unforgettable villain performances, The Wrath of Khan remains one of the greatest sequels ever made. Its real legacy, however, may be what happened after theaters.Paramount made a bold gamble and priced The Wrath of Khan at just $39.95. The result shocked the industry. The tape became the highest-selling VHS release to date. That decision helped reshape home media forever and opened the door for the home video collecting boom of the 1980s.Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones burst onto screens in 1981 with whip-cracking charisma, globe-trotting action, and one of cinema's most instantly recognizable openings. From the giant rolling boulder to the snake-filled Well of Souls, Raiders delivered nonstop thrills while redefining what modern adventure filmmaking could be.When it arrived on VHS in late 1983, priced at the same consumer-friendly $39.95, Raiders generated massive pre-orders and sold more than a million copies within two years. It became one of the first films to demonstrate that a blockbuster could enjoy a hugely profitable second life in home video. It was the kind of movie families brought home again and again, the perfect repeat-viewing experience that made it a cornerstone of early home libraries. The Karate Kid (1984)The Karate Kid was one of those movies families rented over and over again until every line of dialogue was memorized. Released in 1984, the story of Daniel LaRusso, Mr. Miyagi, and the All-Valley Karate Tournament struck a perfect balance of heart, humor, action, and inspiration. On VHS, The Karate Kid became one of the defining family rentals of the decade.Unlike the spectacle-driven blockbusters on this list, its success proved that emotionally resonant, character-driven stories could thrive in the home video market. It became a staple of Friday night rentals, sleepovers, and repeat family viewings.Batman (1989)The summer of 1989 belonged to Batman.Tim Burton's Batman wasn't just a hit movie, it was a full-scale cultural event. Michael Keaton's brooding Dark Knight, Jack Nicholson's unforgettable Joker, Danny Elfman's thunderous score, and Gotham's gothic atmosphere transformed superhero cinema forever. It was darker, moodier, and more cinematic than anything audiences expected from a comic book adaptation. Then came the VHS release.Warner Bros. priced Batman at an aggressive $24.95, making it one of the most accessible blockbuster home video releases of its era. Stores stacked walls of black-and-gold VHS boxes. Cardboard standees filled lobbies. Television commercials hyped its release like another theatrical event. The theatrical release made Batman a cultural obsession. The VHS release made it part of everyday life.Thank You for 100 EpisodesFrom Star Trek II changing VHS pricing forever, to Raiders proving the power of repeat home viewing… from The Karate Kid becoming a family rental institution to Batman turning home video into a national event, these weren't just great movies. They were the tapes that defined Friday nights. They built home video libraries, filled video store shelves, and helped create the culture we celebrate every week here at the Video Store Podcast. To everyone who has listened, shared the show, and stopped by the store these past 100 episodes: thank you!Until next time — be kind, rewind. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! This episode is a love letter to people who are magnificently, irrepressibly, sometimes accidentally weird. Larry Dorsey Jr. opens with the true account of his first day teaching standup comedy at Northern California's top improv venue. He has TAs, a curriculum, a strategy. None of it survives contact with a visibly high student who, roughly fifteen minutes into class, pulls out his ding-dong and just starts going, putting Larry in an impossible position. And Tuesday Thomas moves to LA fresh from a divorce, meets Alexis Arquette within her first week, and ends up at a film premiere with Danny Elfman, where she personally escorts a legless, increasingly volatile Susan Tyrrell down Hollywood Boulevard in stiletto heels on a Friday night. Luc Besson finally made a Dracula movie in 2026… and somehow turned it into a boring, horny, perfume‑addled fever dream instead of a gothic horror classic. In this episode of The Cinema Psychos Show, Brian tears into Dracula (2026) and explains why this shiny new take on the Count feels more like a knockoff of better Dracula films than a bold reinvention. We break down everything that went wrong: Vlad accidentally killing his own wife, God apparently "rewarding" him with vampirism, the unhinged sex‑perfume subplot, cartoonish suicide jumps, rubbery CGI gargoyles, and a tone that ping‑pongs between tragic romance, goofy comedy, and Axe body spray commercial. Brian also digs into Caleb Landry Jones' off‑kilter Dracula, Christoph Waltz on autopilot, and a Danny Elfman score that deserves a much better movie. Along the way, we compare Besson's vision to Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, modern Nosferatu takes, and other adaptations that actually respect the character, and ask the big question: what the hell happened to Luc Besson as a filmmaker? Plus, we dip into some wild online reviews from people who genuinely think this is the best Dracula in years. If you're a horror nerd, Dracula obsessive, or cult cinema sicko who loves hearing a beautiful mess get taken apart scene by scene, you're in the right madhouse. Recorded at Skip Paige's Little Bar, this episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar with Patrick Evans & Randy Florence welcomes musician, actor, and award-winning composer Tommy Fields for a wide-ranging conversation about creativity, career pivots, and life in the desert. Tommy shares how growing up in small-town Indiana led to guitars, garage bands, and a leap to Los Angeles with little more than a one-way ti cket and a dream. He reflects on early hustle—music school, odd jobs, and club gigs—before finding his lane writing for TV, film, and commercials, including a fast-paced world of two-to-five-week scoring deadlines. The hosts dig into his inspirations, from Back to the Future-era orchestral storytelling to the quirky magic of Danny Elfman, and Tommy breaks down his writing process between piano and studio. He also tells the unreal story of nearly becoming the lead singer of Velvet Revolver, and why life ultimately steered him toward composing.Takeaways:A small-town upbringing can still lead to big creative careers with persistence.Moving to L.A. required hustle: school, odd jobs, and immediate band work.Film/TV scoring often runs on intense deadlines—sometimes just two weeks.Tommy's process starts with script themes, then moves between piano and studio.Classic composers shaped his approach: strong themes and scene-by-scene storytelling.Rock-band experience can translate into scoring, as many composers began in bands. He nearly fronted Velvet Revolver, but the band chose a different direction.Desert living helps balance high-pressure work with a calmer day-to-day rhythm.#BigConversationsLittleBarPodcast #PatrickEvans #RandyFlorence #SkipsLittleBar #MutualBroadcastingSystem #CoachellaValleyResidents #SkipPaige #McCallumTheatre #TommyFields #Musician #Actor #FilmComposer #TVScoring #MovieScores #VelvetRevolver #DannyElfman #JohnWilliams #IndianaToLA #DesertLife #CreativeProcess #NikkiBoyer

Join Here: https://ow.ly/msoH50WCu0KThe latest Notorious Mass Effect segment dives deep into A$AP Rocky's explosive return with his fourth studio album, Don't Be Dumb, released January 16, 2026, via A$AP Worldwide/RCA—ending an eight-year gap since Testing (2018). Hosted by Analytic Dreamz, this breakdown explores the project's experimental edge, playful production, and bold themes of fatherhood, fame, industry clones, and unresolved rivalries. At the center is the standout track "Stole Ya Flow" (track 4), featuring Danny Elfman production, where Rocky delivers sharp bars widely interpreted as targeting Drake—accusing style theft with the chorus "First you stole my flow, so I stole yo' bitch," while referencing Rihanna, fatherhood, and alleged cosmetic procedures ("N****s gettin' BBLs, lucky we don't body-shame" / "My baby mama Rihanna, so we unbothered"). Rocky addressed the implied diss on The New York Times' Popcast, saying "I think we all know" and showing no interest in reconciliation: "It don't even need to be."The 15-track album (runtime ~1 hour) boasts a Tim Burton-designed cover and eclectic features/production from Brent Faiyaz, Doechii, Tyler the Creator, Gorillaz, Westside Gunn, will.i.am, Thundercat, and more. Highlights include innovative sampling on "Stay Here" (Brent Faiyaz), melodic vibes on "Punk Rocky," and high-concept cuts like "Robbery" and "Whiskey (Release Me)." Critics call it stronger and less self-serious than Testing, channeling "what 2011 Rocky would be making in 2026," though some experiments feel overdone.Amid family life with Rihanna (sharing three children: RZA, Riot, and Rocki Irish born September 2025) and no tour announced, Don't Be Dumb cements Rocky's status as a style icon and hip-hop force—personally unbothered and musically victorious in ongoing narratives.Join Analytic Dreamz for this no-holds-barred analysis of the beef timeline, track-by-track insights, and why this comeback matters in 2026 rap culture.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

"I just want to consult the big Avon handbook." It's Christmas at Movies That Made Us Gay, and we watched "Edward Scissorhands." We've been enchanted with this Tim Burton-directed gem for decades, and it feels like we've waited that long to cover it on the pod. Edward is a suburban goth Frankenstein, and our teen angst hearts were forever taken with his Clara Bow makeup, Robert Smith hair, and Johnny Depp's subtle performance. Gen X Queen Winona Ryder is giving ethereal "Tim Burton Blonde," but she's no damsel in distress. Winona and Johnny famously went on to become a '90s power couple, and we likely have this pairing to thank. We adore the rest of the women in Edward's orbit; Dianne Wiest charms us as Peg Boggs, his Avon Lady savior, and the gossipy neighbors played perfectly by the likes of Kathy Baker, Conchata Ferrell, and O-Lan Jones are hilarious as the neighborhood's Greek Chorus of busy bodies. We watch this movie every year and listen to the soundtrack on repeat. The real ones know Danny Elfman's score is top tier— this movie deserves nothing less. Regardless of how you feel about Tim Burton's latest films, this movie stands out as a masterpiece, and a Christmas classic. For our holiday episode, we sat down with Scrooged, and it ended up being a huge hit with all of us. Dave and Brandon were already familiar with this twisted Christmas classic, but for Eric—being the youngest of the group—this was his very first viewing, Across the board, we praised the film's sharp production, spot-on casting, and the unforgettable score by Danny Elfman. What stood out was how confidently Scrooged updates A Christmas Carol for a modern audience, balancing cynicism, heart, and humor in a way that still feels relevant decades later. It's a holiday episode full of laughs, nostalgia, and genuine appreciation for a bold reimagining of a timeless story. Stick around until the end fcor a round of Holiday Trivia!Happy Holidays, Nomads.
I don't know about you Miss Kitty, but Batman Returns is feeling so much gayer. This unofficial Christmas movie about the Penguin's rise, Catwoman's coming out and Bruce Wayne's need to come out all takes place around the holidays in Gotham, with a sabotaged tree lighting, a Christmas party under attack and cold soup by the fire one night in that fussy bachelor pad. Michelle Pfeiffer is the reason for the season as Selina Kyle in and out of the bodysuit, Danny DeVito goes to a 27 and back, Jan Hooks shows up just before that nose bite happens, plus we get PeeWee and Simone, best featured Ice Princess, Danny Elfman's score, the Hello There neon sign and a chest voice close to our hearts.Become a Matreon at the Sister Mary level to get access to Season 6 of Canada's Drag Race, plus brackets, movie reviews and past seasons of US Drag Race, UK, Canada, Down Under, Espana, Global All Stars, Philippines and more.Join us at our OnlyMary's level for our current recap of Season 4 of Drag Race plus even more movie reviews, brackets, and deep dives into our personal lives!Patreon: www.patreon.com/alrightmaryEmail: alrightmarypodcast@gmail.comInstagram: @alrightmarypodJohnny: @johnnyalso (Instagram)Colin: @colindrucker_ (Instagram)Web: www.alrightmary.com

Welcome to the Video Store Podcast. It's Christmas movie season but not everyone wants peppermint sweetness and cozy small-town charm. Some of us want our holiday movies filled with explosions, heists and a whole lot of chaos. This week on the Video Store Podcast, I'm spotlighting four Christmas movies that trade twinkling lights for trouble. Reindeer Games (2000)Reindeer Games is a crime thriller set days before Christmas. When Rudy Duncan (Ben Affleck) is released from prison his only goal is to get home for Christmas. But when his cell-mate dies, Rudy steps into the man's shoes to meet his mysterious and beautiful pen pal, Ashley (Charlize Theron). One bad decision later and Rudy is trapped in a violent casino-robbery plot run by Ashley's unstable “brother,” Gabriel (Gary Sinise). With no options, Rudy is forced deeper into the operation and nothing is what it seems as alliances shift and lies are uncovered. Reindeer Games brings crime, plot twists and holiday mayhem together in one memorable movie.Batman Returns (1992)Tim Burton's Batman Returns is set against a dark, gothic backdrop of Gotham City during the Christmas season. Batman Returns introduces two iconic villains who become the city's newest threats. The first is Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, a physically deformed man who was abandoned by his wealthy parents and raised in the city's sewers by penguins. The second is Selina Kyle, Catwoman, pushed to her limit by evil businessman Max Shreck.Michelle Pfeiffer is the definitive Catwoman, seductive, broken and electric in every frame. Danny DeVito's Penguin is a grotesque and disfigured man, a departure from the comics. Christopher Walken adds a sinister element as the businessman Max Shreck.Tim Burton's vision partnered with Danny Elfman's haunting score creates a mesmerizing Christmas classic set in Gotham City. The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)Samantha Caine (Geena Davis) lives a quiet life as a schoolteacher until a car crash triggers memories of her past life as a deadly government assassin.Samantha hires private detective Mitch Hennessey (Samuel L. Jackson) to help her uncover her past and together they set out to find the truth. Their adventure is full of gunfights, treachery, and some of the best buddy-dynamic chemistry of the '90s. Davis transforms from warm suburban mom to hard-boiled operative with shocking believability and Jackson delivers one of his funniest, most charismatic roles.Written by Shane Black and directed by Renny Harlin, The Long Kiss Goodnight mixes holiday atmosphere with espionage to create one of the 90's most underrated action movies.Lethal Weapon (1987)Lethal Weapon redefined the buddy-cop genre and set the standard for all future buddy-cop movies. Set at Christmastime in Los Angeles, the movie pairs veteran detective Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) with newcomer Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson). Their investigation into a young woman's suspicious death spirals into a violent clash with drug traffickers and the psychotic Mr. Joshua (Gary Busey).Lethal Weapon is full of heart, which is what you want in a Christmas movie. Riggs who is spiraling out of control from grief and Murtaugh, a grounded family man, form a bond that is convincing from start to finish. Also written by Shane Black, Hollywood's king of Christmas action movies and directed by Richard Donner, Lethal Weapon blends holiday themes with explosive action, dark humor, and iconic one-liners. Lethal Weapon is on of my favorite Christmas action movies. If you're looking for Christmas movies that are filled with action, these four belong at the top of your December movie list. Thanks for visiting the Video Store. Shawn Levy had to make a big change to the third act of Starfighter before filming. Rogue One is proof of why that can be a very good thing. We discuss that and more Stargfighter bits from Levy's chat with Kevin McCarthy, including what we can expect from Thomas Newman's score thanks in part to advice legendary composer Danny Elfman gave to Levy years ago. Plus, a premise from The Mandalorian and Grogu is floating around the Bluray rumor mill, are we buying this? Find out!
