Master '80's auteur Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill, Silverado, Body Heat) kicked off the '90's with this dark comedy based upon the bizarre true story of a philandering husband whose wife conspired to murder him....and yet he wouldn't die. :o The husband is Joey played by Oscar-Winner Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda, Dave), the wife is Rosalie played by Emmy-Winner Tracey Ullman (Tracey Takes On) and the cast just gets more interesting from there including Oscar-nominee Joan Plowright as Rosalie's mother, Oscar-nominated River Phoenix as Rosalie's friend, PLUS Oscar-Winner William Hurt and Keanu Reeves playing two drug-using cousins.  And believe it or not....each of these characters are involved in this murder plot....AND they're ALL funny no less?? :) This film was pretty much forgotten almost as soon as it was released back in the Spring of 1990, let's find out if it should have been. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

My guest today is a Gen X legend and someone I've been a little bit obsessed with ever since I saw her star in the definitive (late) 80s movie, Say Anything. Ione Skye. There was a time when It seemed like if there was a hot young actor - John Cusack, River Phoenix, Keanu Reeves - she got to snog them on screen. (I know, shallow, much.) Ione has spent her life in the centre of the Venn diagram of film, music and celebrity. The daughter of 60s superstar Donovan, she famously dated Red Hot Chilli Peppers' Anthony Keidis finding herself both babysitter and breadwinner at just 16. She followed that with an ill-fated marriage to Beastie Boy Ad-Rock (Adam Horowitz). But there is so much more to Ione than all those male name drops. She has starred in some of the most significant movies of their generation. She has worked with the likes of Sofia Coppola, Chloe Sevigny, Lena Dunham and Madonna. She's written children's books, directed short films and is an accomplished painter. Not to mention podcaster. (She hosts the podcast Weirder Together with her partner, Ben Lee.) Oh, and I do just have to say that as a child she only lived next door to the iconic writer Eve Babitz! Anyway It all adds up to one fascinating tumultuous story. One she's addressed extremely candidly in her new memoir, Say Everything. See what she did there? Ione joined me from LA to talk about growing up in the 80s and 90s, being a nepo baby before nepo babies were a thing, having it all, losing it all and getting some of it back, what she's learnt from her Gen Z daughters and finally coming into herself in her 50s. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Say Everything by Ione Skye and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Production. River Phoenix was a once-in-a-generation talent. In the 1980s, a decade known for artifice and excess, he brought raw acting chops to performances in Stand by Me, Running on Empty, and My Own Private Idaho. His career was only just getting started when he died tragically at the age of 23 outside a notorious nightclub in Hollywood. The story of his short life is as complicated and dramatic as one of his signature roles, and includes brushes with religious cults, skinheads, street hustlers, and L.A.'s drug underworld. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including child sexual abuse and sex trafficking. Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. This week, get your BFFs together for a movie marathon focusing on Film Friendships. I've selected four films for the staff picks wall, highlighting my favorite best buds and friendships forged in fire. I also answer the age-old question, “Can men and women really be friends?” Let's dig in. Stand by Me (1986)First up is Rob Reiner's 1986 coming-of-age classic, Stand by Me. Starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, and Keifer Sutherland, Stand by Me is a classic focusing on the friendship between four boys growing up in the summer of 1959. Do you still have friends like you did when you were twelve? I hope so. Gather your besties on the couch for this one. Now and Then (1995)Next is the 1995 film Now and Then. I return to my twelve-year-old self whenever I watch this film, not just because I relate to the young leads of the film, but because of the deep and sincere friendship that is the film's through-line. Starring Christina Ricci, Rosie O'Donnell, Thora Birch, Melanie Griffith, Gaby Hoffman, Demi Moore, Ashleigh Aston Moore, and Rita Wilson, these ladies deliver a powerful dramatic, and comedic performance. Get your best gals together for a great film with a great soundtrack. When Harry Met Sally… (1989)Yes, I know what you're thinking: a rom-com in a movie about friendship? You read that right. When Harry Met Sally… addresses the age-old question, “Can men and women be friends?” Well, I've got thoughts on the matter and you'll have to listen to this week's show to find out why I've selected this one for a podcast on film friendship. Thelma & Louise (1991)Closing out our staff picks wall this week is the 1991 drama/comedy/road movie Thelma & Louise. Starring Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, this Oscar-winning film about two best friends on the run from the law deals deeply with ideas of freedom, friendship, and letting go of others' expectations. Get your bestie to ride shotgun with you for this one. Buckle up. It's a bumpy ride. Thanks for joining us this week on the Video Store Podcast. River Phoenix got an Oscar nomination for his role as Danny Pope, the son of two fugitives on the run from the FBI. Though it sounds like an action-packed thriller, Running on Empty was anything but. The film dealt with the hopes, heartaches, and fears of the Pope family, but audiences in 1988 turned a cold shoulder. Now, decades later, is it time for the Sidney Lumet sleeper to come out of the shadows? Was this Phoenix's finest hour? And couldn't the ending have been a li'l happier? Eli Zaret joins us after college football's opening weekend, Joey Lawrence opens up on Brotherly Love, happy sober birthday to Chet Hanks, an influencer whines that no one will hire her, and a Cop Cam featuring singer DaniLeigh. Podcasting Notes: Stuttering John is back on the internet following a multi-hour hiatus. Aaron Imholte of Steel Toe Morning Show is in trouble. Blind Mike Geary almost reached his goal and it was glorious. The Kelce brothers remain rich. Eli Zaret joins the show as college football is BACK! MSU QB Aidan Chiles is a bad at betting, beer at the Big House, Michigan's tough challenge against the Texas Longhorns, Arch Manning off the bench, Michigan K Dominic Zvada big leg, Oklahoma State's QR code's banned on helmets, Clemson is “too white”, the Cavinder Twins won't go away anytime soon, USC QB Miller Moss' hot mom, eyerolling at hero Connor Stalions, the humble former New York Yankee Roger Maris, Fantasy Football is also back, Aaron Judge & Juan Soto hitting bombs, the Detroit Lions return Sunday night, Tom Brady's broadcasting debut, Kansas City Chief Rashee Rice remains unpunished, the '84 Tigers reunion, AI Ernie Harwell, the Detroit Tigers' playoff push and more. Politics: Kamala Harris and Tim Walz bored everyone last week on CNN. Harris is polling strong. Trump claims Kamala lied about working at McDonald's. Jeff Walz vs his brother Tim Walz. Tim runs away from the camera with an ice cream. Dark Side of the 90s taught Drew about Arsenio Hall and River Phoenix. The Doug Stanhope arrest was all some goof. False alarm. Brittany Pietsch filmed herself getting fired from Cloudflare and now no one seems to want to hire her. Gen Z just loves sick days. We watch Aaron Imholte beg people for money on the World Wide Web. Yoko Ono once ruined The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. Joey Lawrence finally addresses all his marital woes on the Brotherly Love Podcast. Woke Dad doesn't care what we have to say while responding to what we said. This dude from the Bachelorette is totally pulling off being a chick now. Is he trolling? Chet Hanks gets his own mural in Colombia as he celebrates his sober birthday. Heather Graham hasn't talked to her parents in years. Parental estrangement is so hot right now. Cop Cam: Singer DaniLeigh is a bad driver. There are only a couple tickets left available see us October 25th at The Magic Bag with WATP. Grab them before they're sold out.
