Mike (River Phoenix) and Scott (Keanu Reeves) are hustlers working their way around Portland trying to make ends meet, who are also best friends.  Together they hit the road to Idaho AND Italy on a journey of self-discovery while Mike tries to find his mother whom he hasn't seen in years.  This stirring comedy/drama road movie was written and directed by Oscar-nominee Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk, Drugstore Cowboy) early in his career and was not only considered a breakthrough for independent cinema at the time of its release, but also for LGBT cinema.  It also now remembered for containing what MIGHT be the defining performance for the late, great Phoenix who would die tragically just a couple of years later.  Let's hit the road and always remember to....Have A Nice Day. :) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us Fan MailSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

“I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve... does anyone?” Join Ian, Kev & Megs for our 332nd episode as we walk the tracks, dodge leeches, and revisit Rob Reiner's coming-of-age classic Stand By Me (1986). This week is all about friendship, memory, growing up, and the strange sadness of knowing some moments only become important once they're already gone. Liam drops in later for a special bonus segment, while BFF of the BFE: Ariannah Who Loves BFE The Most™ joins us for The Endgame. This week we discuss: River Phoenix's extraordinary performance — vulnerable, intelligent, and quietly devastating. Was this the role that proved he was destined for greatness? The chemistry of the four boys — natural, funny, chaotic, and deeply believable. Is this one of the strongest young ensembles ever put to film? The film's relationship with memory — nostalgia, grief, and the way adulthood reshapes childhood stories. Ian breaks down the narration structure — reflective storytelling, emotional hindsight, and why Richard Dreyfuss' voiceover works where so many others fail. Megs explores the emotional honesty of the film — masculinity, vulnerability, and the fear of being left behind. Kev weighs in on the pacing and atmosphere — quiet moments, campfire stories, and why the journey matters more than the destination. The balance of humour and sadness — how the film pivots effortlessly between childhood comedy and existential dread. Ian talks about the short story in the middle of this bigger story and what Stephen King is really doing with it Liam joins us for a bonus segment — dropping in to talk about the film's legacy, Stephen King adaptations, and why stories about friendship hit differently as you get older. The “show vs tell” balance — does the film earn its emotional resonance through subtle character work, or does nostalgia do some of the lifting? Ariannah joins us for The Endgame — helping us unpack why Stand By Me continues to resonate across generations and whether its emotional simplicity is actually its greatest strength. The ending — bittersweet, perfect, and quietly heartbreaking. Does any closing narration hit harder than this? And finally, whether Stand By Me is the Best Film Ever — or simply one of the most emotionally truthful coming-of-age films ever made. Ok, my l33t haxx0rz! We've got a major kludge to pen test here so let's get to it. We're going to hack this week's episode of “This Looks Like a Good Place for a Stickup,” 1992's “Sneakers.” Coming off the “hacker mania” of the early 90's (the Internet Worm, Operation: Sun-devil, and the horror that was “Mario Hotel”), this movie posits the frightfully tech-savvy question: “what if there was a magic box that could do magic things to every computer anywhere, all the time, in seconds?” So l33t! Very tech! Weird question? Well, what if some of the people who are trying to answer it are Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, River Phoenix, and Mary McDonnell? No, seriously, those are just some of the big names in this cast. Surely the ever-so-computer-savvy minds of 1992 Hollywood would come up with something at least as believable as, oh, I don't know, “Hackers,” right? They've got big, big names, so that's got to be good, right? Well, give a listen and find out. End of line. Poll question: what is your choice for most ludicrous, ridiculous movie plot? Leave a comment or leave a ludicrous, ridiculous message on our Hotline at 617-398-7266.

In October 1993, River Phoenix crashed out of Johnny Depp's exclusive club, fell onto the pavement, and died. An hour earlier, the 23-year-old rising star had snorted a lethal combination of cocaine and heroin known as a ‘speedball' in the toilets. As he staggered around the club, no one offered Phoenix anything more than a valium to "take the edge off”. How did Johnny Depp's club become such a den of iniquity and excess? Of course Brian's picking one of the few "gay" movies of the 90s for his birthday episode. Starring Keanu Reeves and the late-great River Phoenix, "Idaho" was an indie hit in 1991, its box office quadrupling its budget. But, just how gay is Gus Van Sant's male sex worker opus by today's standards? And is this movie a road trip, a love story, a docudrama, a Shakespearian tragedy or something else? And is it simply all too much? The Old Roommates relax by a soundstage campfire and give it all a revisit ... through their middle-aged lens. This summer we're curating your 456 playlist listening to bring you some of our favourite interviews from MID and No Filter. In the 80s & 90s - they didn’t come any cooler than Ione Skye. You remember her from Say Anything, the iconic 80s teen movie, or from River’s Edge or Gas Food Lodging or The Rachel Papers…But while Ione was busy making some of the most era-defining films, she was also living the most aspirational 90’s life imaginable - Teenage friends with River Phoenix, teenage girlfriend to The Red Hot Chilli Peppers Anthony Keidis. Young wife of Beastie Boy Adam 'Ad Rock' Horowitz. Welcomed into Madonna’s circle, until she started dating all her female exes. Now, she’s been married to Australian musician Ben Lee for well over a decade, and lives in Sydney. But Ione isn’t defined by the men she’s married or the women she’s loved - she’s the main character of her own wild, beautiful, fearless story - and she’s written it all down in her book, Say Everything - which is a glorious, pent-up outpouring of story and gossip and validation of girlhood and womanhood and romance and sexuality and what was like to come of age in - literally - a different time. You can find Ione’s book here: https://www.harpercollins.com.au/9780008661120/say-everything-a-memoir/ And follow her on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/ioneskyelee/ Find more MID here. Actor and director Chad Lowe sits down with Steve for one of the most deeply honest, funny, and unexpectedly emotional conversations we've had on Still Here Hollywood. From growing up in the shadow of a wildly famous big brother to discovering his own path through acting, sobriety, fatherhood, and directing, Chad tells the story of a life shaped by love, rivalry, reinvention — and a few surreal Hollywood moments. He opens up about the early days when teenage girls hung posters of Rob but not him… auditioning for roles that went on to define a generation (On Golden Pond, Running on Empty, Goonies, Say Anything)… and the moment River Phoenix's performance inspired him to become a better actor. Chad shares how Martin Sheen changed the course of his life on one unforgettable car ride, how he overcame paralyzing audition anxiety, and why Life Goes On became the most meaningful work of his career. For the first time, Chad also walks us through the real story behind Hilary Swank's Oscar speech, how he actually felt in the car afterward, why he cried at the ceremony, and how the two of them found peace and perspective years later. We cover the state of Hollywood post-strikes, directing 911: Lone Star alongside Rob, taking his daughters to Taylor Swift (and surviving the ticket wars), his years of sobriety, what scares him most as a “girl dad,” and how a tuna melt changed his life at Elizabeth Taylor's house. It's heartfelt, self-deprecating, and full of moments that remind you why Chad Lowe has quietly built one of the most beloved, complicated, fascinating careers in the business. A must-watch episode for anyone who knows the highs and lows of following your own path — even when the world thinks it already knows who you are. Paul Thomas Anderson himself cited 1988's RUNNING ON EMPTY as a direct influence on the new ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, and it's not difficult to see the rhymes between these two films about former revolutionaries trying to protect their kids from the consequences of their parents' past. We'll get into those rhymes more next week, but first we devote some time to Sidney Lumet's 1988 film, which is less cat-and-mouse chase than coming-of-age family drama, anchored by a remarkable River Phoenix as the teenage son of former anti-war protesters on the run from the law. Unlike with PTA's film, there are no real bad guys in RUNNING ON EMPTY, only problems to negotiate within a rich family dynamic that is both delightful in its specificity and heartbreaking in its fragility. After that, we field some Feedback from listeners about our recent episodes on HIGHEST 2 LOWEST and THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY?
