This week, Ed Balls and George Osborne mull museums and memes via bank holidays and pennies. With listeners telling us their locations of choice, funeral director Ross ranks highly with his admission that Ed and George are sometimes listened to in a hearse on the drive home. The pair consider: what are the merits of regulating the funeral industry?Should our cultural institutions be charging more for access?George calls upon his expertise as Chair of the British Museum to weigh it up. Meanwhile, Ed shares his own research into the economics of a bank holiday… do we really stand to lose billions if the government was to introduce another?Toxic masculinity and online safety are in the spotlight in the wake of Netflix's hit show Adolescence, with research indicating that young people in the UK are particularly worried about these issues. Ed and George look at the role of government in addressing their concerns, before assessing whether the humble penny should remain a staple of British life. And a touch of nostalgia …  a listener reminds the economic duo of the ‘Budget Rap Battle', put together by Sky News when the pair were on opposite sides of the dispatch box. Ed expresses scepticism that such memes can make a political difference, although both agree that Nick Clegg's I'm Sorry remix was a damaging – albeit amusing – moment in the Lib Dem leader's career…. Become a member of POLITICAL CURRENCY GOLD

As Mike Amesbury bows out of his career as a Labour MP after being caught on tape assaulting a constituent, this week's episode of Westminster Insider goes inside politicians' wrangles with the law. Host Sascha O'Sullivan finds out if winding up in front of a judge can ever be survivable for a politician — high-profile or not. She talks to former Lib Dem advisor Sean Kemp about how the case of Chris Huhne, climate secretary during the coalition years, triggered a by-election which almost threatened the leadership of Nick Clegg. Fergus Mutch, former director of communications to the Scottish National Party, recalls being a witness in the trial of his former boss, Alex Salmond, who was eventually acquitted of charges of sexual assault in 2020. Mutch says the Salmond trial and the internal warfare it triggered did huge amounts of damage to the SNP. And Sascha turns to the sensational hush money trial of Donald Trump in the midst of the 2024 presidential election campaign. She talks to Michael Martins, a former senior advisor to the US embassy in the U.K., and Sarah Elliot, the spokesperson for Republicans overseas about how Trump eventually used the trial to his advantage. Sascha looks at how Marine Le Pen is using a similar playbook to Trump, with a trial against her helping galvanise her support base. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On 7 January, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced changes to its platforms' content moderation policies that, he admitted, will mean the company is “going to catch less bad stuff” across Facebook, Instagram and Threads.Among the raft of changes, Meta announced it was halting its third-party fact-checking programme in the US and replacing it with a Community Notes feature. It also updated its hateful conduct policy to now allow users to call women “household objects” or refer to transgender or non-binary individuals as “it”, among numerous other dehumanising examples. The story has dominated conversation around the industry throughout the early weeks of the year, with media agencies looking to reconcile potential concerns around brand safety and their own DEI commitments with the importance of Meta platforms on the media plan.In an op-ed for The Media Leader, Sonnie Spenser, Outvertising's communications co-director and Fresh Pies' digital marketing manager, pleaded with the UK media industry to disavow Meta's content moderation changes and consider an “exit strategy” to cut adspend from the tech giant. They joined senior reporter Jack Benjamin on the podcast to elaborate on the ethical and business cases for reapportioning spend away from Meta. They also discussed the raw impact Meta's policy changes have had on the LGBTQ+ community in the UK, whether brands truly care about brand safety and what the media industry can do to support minority members of staff amid a business culture shift away from DEI.Spenser said: "Hate is slowly becoming normalised and we need to do something about it."Highlights:2:22: Content moderation changes and cozying up to Donald Trump8:04: Should advertisers reduce spend on Meta? BlackRock Cuts Back on Board Diversity Push in Proxy-Vote GuidelinesThe policy updates remove both (a) numerical diversity targets (i.e., boards should aspire to 30% diversity of membership and have at least 2 women directors and 1 director from an underrepresented group) and (b) the related disclosure-based voting policy (i.e., BlackRock previously would consider taking voting action if a company did not adequately explain its approach to board diversity) – but provides that BlackRock may consider taking voting action if an S&P 500 board is not sufficiently diverse (BlackRock includes a footnote in the policy update suggesting that 30% diversity may still be the expectation).BlackRock's investment stewardship team tweaked the language used to describe how it approaches votes for other companies' boards. It didn't explicitly recommend that boards should aspire to at least 30% diversity of their members, after having done so in previous years. The report noted, however, that all but 2% of the boards of companies in the S&P 500 have diverse representation of at least 30%—and that if companies were out of step with those norms, BlackRock may cast opposing votes on a case-by-case basis. Here's where the ‘winter vomiting disease' is spreading and whyMATT1CostcoNational Center for Public Policy Research filed the proxy with CostcoTheir arguments include…US Supreme court decision at HarvardA $25m judgment in PA for white regional manager at Starbucks who was fired after two black patrons were arrested for being blackThis gem: “With 310,000 employees, Costco likely has at least 200,000 employees who are potentially victims of this type of illegal discrimination because they are white, Asian, male or straight.”This, perhaps, is the greatest ironic argument for “meritocracy” ever made in historyThey point out that the MAJORITY OF THE STAFF is white, Asian, male, or straight… but they don't even use Costco's data, they source census data and just guessThe real numbers:Non management is 44.2% white, management is 58% white - a 14% increase in meritocracyExecutives are 80.6% white - a whopping 36.4% more meritHispanics are 33.1% of non management, 23.3% of management - 9.8% less merit!Executives are 5.8% Hispanic, 26.3% less meritAsians are 8.5% and 7.1%, so 1.4% less merit7.9% executive - so even merit?US Exec management is 72.3% maleSo 80.6% of executives are white, and 72.3% are male - and the argument NCPPR is making is that BECAUSE there are a lot of white males, there is a lot of RISK that THE WHITE MALES WILL SUE YOU if they think they're discriminated againstThink of what they're saying - because you have so many non diverse people, you can't have diversity programs for risk of lawsuitThe response dropped the pretense that the proxy was anything except racismThe proponent professes concern about legal and financial risks to the Company and its shareholders associated with the diversity initiatives. The proponent's broader agenda is not reducing risk for the Company but abolition of diversity initiatives. A 2023 federal district court decision, in a case brought by the proponent, noted that the proponent had "published a document called 'Balancing the Boardroom 2022,' which describes its shareholder activism as 'fighting back' against 'the evils of woke politicized capital and companies.' [The proponent went] on to describe 'CEOs and other corporate executives who are most woke and most hard-left political in their management of their corporations' as 'inimical to the Republic and its blessings of liberty' and 'committed to critical race theory and the socialist foundations of woke' or 'shameless monsters who are willing to sacrifice our future for their comforts.'" National Center for Public Policy Research v. Schultz, E.D. WA. (Sept. 11, 2023). And the proponent's efforts to demonstrate retrenchment on the part of companies are misleading, at best. For example, the assertion that "Microsoft laid off an entirea[sic] DEI team" is simply wrong. It was later reported that Microsoft stated that the two positions eliminated were redundant roles on its events team and that Microsoft's diversity and inclusion commitments remain unchanged, according to Jeff Jones, a Microsoft spokesperson: “Our focus on diversity and inclusion is unwavering and we are holding firm on our expectations, prioritizing accountability, and continuing to focus on this work.” Colvin, Caroline. Amid DEI cuts, Microsoft works to distinguish itself from those responding to ‘woke' backlash. HR Dive, July 24, 2024.Reason Costco might be pushing back?Racism is basically unveiledOf all the companies targeted by a proposal or Robbie Starbuck, Costco has the lowest deviation in board member influence - as in, nearly the entire board has equal power, it's highly democratic - women, men, diverse cohorts are more or less equally powerful to anyone else in the roomNo connections to any board member on another DEI flipper companyMeanwhile, the anti DEI, anti immigrant movement has begun to eat itself before Trump even takes officeIn defense of more HB1 visas and foreign workers, Vivek Ramaswamy says we venerate jocks over valedictorians on Twitter, and Americans aren't as good employeesThe rebuttal was MAGA Trumpers saying Vivek is fake MAGAAlso this: “His entire argument is a terrible proposition,” he adds. “Children raised to be good little robots might grow up to build robots of their own someday, and become rich. Asians are the highest-earning racial group in America, but are they happier for it? Suicide is the leading cause of death for Asians aged 15-24 … and the second-leading cause of death for those aged 25-34.” Page points to a Psychology Today post that blames tiger parenting for causing anxiety and depression and then asks, “Do we really want this country to be even more stressed-out?”Costco proxy says Asians are discriminated againstTwitch gamers are streaming about “meritocracy”

Vance in december. By analyzing vast legal data with NLP and AI models, dormant or redundant statutes could be flagged for review, streamlining regulations and reducing compliance burdens. Critics warn of potential risks, but proponents argue AI can assist, not replace, human oversight in simplifying legal complexities for modern governance. Amazon Unveils Nova AI Models to Compete with Adobe and Meta At its annual AWS conference, Amazon introduced Nova, a series of foundation AI models for text, image, and video generation, rivaling Adobe and Meta. The models promise improved speed, cost efficiency, and advanced capabilities like creating six-second videos with Nova Reel. Amazon also debuted its Canvas tool for image generation and announced upcoming multimodal AI functionalities. With plans for an enhanced Alexa and strategic partnerships, Amazon positions itself as a key player in generative AI. Google Launches Veo, Its Generative AI Video Model Google's Veo, a generative AI video model, is now available via its Vertex AI platform, enabling businesses to create 1080p videos from text or image prompts. Veo also integrates SynthID watermarks for content attribution. OpenAI lags with its Sora model as businesses increasingly adopt generative AI for revenue growth. Meta Reports AI Had Limited Impact on 2024 Elections Meta's Nick Clegg stated that generative AI had a modest influence on global elections in 2024, with Meta effectively countering disinformation using advanced tools. AI-generated deepfakes and misinformation were quickly exposed, but concerns remain about disinformation on other platforms like TikTok. Public distrust of AI in elections persists, though AI also enhanced voter education efforts.  AI-Powered Punching Bag Revolutionizes Home Fitness Growl, an AI-driven boxing trainer, combines augmented reality, 3D cameras, and advanced sensors to transform home workouts. Growl delivers dynamic workouts tailored to user performance. Future updates promise deeper integration with wearables and interactive sparring. Music Industry Faces 25% Income Loss as AI Booms A global study by CISAC reveals that music sector workers could lose nearly 25% of income to generative AI by 2028. AI is projected to grow from a €3bn to €64bn market, enriching tech firms while reducing creators' earnings and opportunities. Policymakers, particularly in Australia and New Zealand, are urged to act to safeguard creators' rights and cultural assets.

We've known Dylan since the days he was editing i-D, Arena and GQ and he's been a regular on our podcasts talking about his books on Live Aid, the ‘80s, David Bowie and Wichita Lineman. And he's finally written his memoir, These Foolish Things, full of insights and stories about glam rock, punk, the Blitz, four decades of the magazine world and the people he interviewed and shepherded into awards shows. You'll hear the delightful clang of the odd dropped name here, along with … … Shirley MacLaine, Michael Caine and the power of fame when it was harder to achieve. … seeing Leigh Bowery in daylight.  … the real story of Kylie's “bare bum” tennis shoot. … does every good memoir involve a degree of treachery? … why Hollywood's still obsessed with print. … William Hague's 14 pints, Nick Clegg's 30 women and other self-selling GQ scoops. … Piers Morgan and Alastair Campbell (“the rottweilers”) and other interrogators who'd always come back with a cover line, usually involving a number. … how politicians make great interviews as they're used to aggression. … “not now, I'm filming!”: life in the Arena office. … i-D, the Face, nightclubs and “intoxicating” London in the early ‘80s. … magazine covers and the fine art of horse-trading. Order These Foolish Things here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/These-Foolish-Things-Dylan-Jones/dp/1408719851Find out more about how to help us keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinhyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. As the general election reaches its final week, host Sascha O'Sullivan takes us inside the last push of the campaign. She explores how parties use every trick of the trade, from advertising to frantic leafleting, to try to capture every possible vote and travels to the BBC debate in Nottingham where the main party leaders had one final face off.Ayesha Hazarika, broadcaster and former adviser to Ed Miliband, explains how many voters begin tune into an election campaign only once they reach the last 10 days, and warns about the impact of gaffes during the final stretch.Former Conservative Party staffer Cleo Watson tells Sascha a scandalous story from the last week of the Vote Leave campaign which never made it to the press. Ben Guerin, one of the advertising masterminds of Boris Johnson's 2019 election victory, relates how parties use attack ads in the last few days. And Craig Oliver, Downing Street Director of Communications for David Cameron, gives us tips for winning the "ground war" by focusing relentlessly on the constituencies which matter the most.Sascha also speaks to pollster James Johnson who says that in the last week, many candidates can be overcome with a misguided optimism about their prospects — and tells us what happens campaign HQs get their data wrong. Also, Jeremy Corbyn's former head of press Steve Howell takes us inside Labour's 2017 campaign, while Sean Kemp, former special adviser to Nick Clegg, gives us a run down on Lib Dem targeting tactics in the final week.
