Today is the second of three COVIDCalls special episodes in partnership with two great research libraries: the American Philosophical Society and the Linda Hall Library. These episodes will explore challenges and new approaches for research libraries and the patrons that use them in the time of COVID. Today I welcome Joanna Radin and Robin Wolfe Scheffler to the discussion.Joanna Radin is a historian of life and human sciences at Yale University, where she is Associate Professor of History of Medicine and a core member of the Program in History of Science & Medicine. There, she is also affiliated with the Departments of History, Anthropology, and American Studies as well as the Programs in Ethnicity, Race & Migration and Religion & Modernity. She is the author of the book Life on Ice: A History of New Uses for Cold Blood (Chicago 2017) and co-editor (with Emma Kowal) of Cryopolitics: Freezing Life in a Melting World (MIT 2017). In addition to numerous academic journals, her writing has also appeared in the Washington Post, Los Angeles Review of Books and The New Inquiry. She is currently at work on a book, tentatively titled, Surreal Science: Michael Crichton, Mass Media and the Manipulation of Modern Life. Radin is co-editor (with Adrian Johns) of the Science as Culture series at University of Chicago Press.Robin Wolfe Scheffler is an Associate Professor in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at MIT. His first book, A Contagious Cause:The American Hunt for Cancer Viruses and the Rise of Molecular Medicine (University of Chicago Press, 2019) examined the century-long effort to identify a human cancer virus and develop a vaccine. His current research, supported by the National Science Foundation focuses on the history of the biotechnology industry in the Greater Boston Area.
Dr. Fred E. Woods discusses his book Melting the Ice and the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Alaska including Mormon migration. The documentary for Melting the Ice is shown first, 6:13-33:29. Second, the development of the LDS Church in Anchorage is discusssed during Dr, Wood's talk, starting at 33:42. Concening the book, according to Ross A. Coen, editor of Alaska History, “Alaska has one of the highest per capita populations of Latter-day Saints of any state in the nation, yet no scholarly history has been written about the LDS Church in the Last Frontier. Until now. Fred Woods’s Melting the Ice is an engrossing read about how many dedicated individuals have contributed to the social and spiritual development of Alaska.” Fred E. Woods completed a B.S. degree in Psychology and a MS degree in International Relations from Brigham Young University. In 1991, he earned a Ph. D. in Middle East Studies from the University of Utah with an emphasis in Hebrew Bible. He has been a BYU professor in the department of Church History & Doctrine since 1998. Note, Fred E. Joanna Radin discusses the writing of Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton. Although Crichton is most famous for imagining an island of dinosaurs, metaphors in his non-fiction articles about computers that are even more terrifying. This talk was presented for the event Future Perfect. In a moment when the future increasingly feels like a foregone conclusion, Future Perfect brought actors from a variety of world-building disciplines (from art and fiction, to law and science) together to explore the uses, abuses, and paradoxes of speculative futures. Curated by Data & Society artist-in-residence Ingrid Burrington, Future Perfect was an experimental one-day, invitation-only conference originating from insights of the institute's regular Speculative Fiction Reading Group. Joanna Radin is Assistant Professor of the History of Science and Medicine at Yale where she teaches feminist and indigenous STS and the history of biomedicine and anthropology. Before receiving her PhD in History and Sociology of Science at UPenn she studied science communication at Cornell and worked as a risk communication specialist. She is the author of Life on Ice: A History of New Uses for Cold Blood, (University of Chicago Press, 2017) and a co-editor of Cyropolitics: Frozen Life in a Melting World (MIT Press, 2017). Radin is currently writing a book about science fiction, subjectivity, and biomedicine.
