The Elevators' first two albums (Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators and Easter Everywhere, released, respectively, in 1966 and '67) are essential classics whose far-reaching influence transcends genre boundaries. Following a nightmarish '70s mental-hospital stint that reportedly had a devastating long-term effect on his mental health, Erickson's subsequent work revealed a singularly brilliant songwriter and performer whose talent was no less impressive for the fact that he was singing about zombies, vampires and aliens. Indeed, the demons that abound in Roky's songs are all-too-real reflections of his own troubled psyche, and the combination of the artist's oddly poetic lyrical constructions and his bracing banshee wail makes it clear, as it wasn't always, that he's not kidding. The Elevators fell apart in the late '60s, when Erickson began a three-year stretch in a state mental institution to avoid criminal prosecution on a drug charge. He didn't return to recording until the second half of the '70s, with a string of one-off singles and the four-song Sponge-label EP (reissued in 1988 as Two Headed Dog). Three of the EP's numbers were re-recorded for the 1980 CBS UK LP (the title of which is actually five unpronounceable ideograms). Roky Erickson and the Aliens is an excellent manifestation of his post-Elevators persona, expressing dark dilemmas through creepy horror-movie imagery. Roky sings such offbeat gems as “I Walked with a Zombie” and “Creature With the Atom Brain” in a tremulous voice that insists he's telling the truth — or at least believes he is. Former Creedence Clearwater bassist Stu Cook turned in an excellent production job, bringing the hard electric guitars (and Bill Miller's electric autoharp) into a sharp focus that underscores Roky's excitable state. Erickson and band seem less unstable than the drug-crazed Elevators (best remembered for “You're Gonna Miss Me”), but just barely.

Now, THAT's a vague episode title! And it's vague on purpose! None of us want to admit to … well, our less than healthy behaviors. Yet the truth is, we all engage in behaviors we would be mortified if others were to witness. The topic of this episode describes a type of behavior and mindset I would bet every one of us has engaged in at some points in time. For a percentage of people, this becomes a way of life. Others can see it clearly, but the one entrenched in this is usually oblivious… because they are hurting. Their attitude and behaviors results in continued self-sabotage and pushing others away. Enough of the mysteriousness…. Buckle your seatbelt, open your mind and let's take a look at this topic. If you're honest enough to see how this describes you, there are suggestions for pivoting into a healthier, more productive way of dealing. Lasers, fog machines, silent prayers…and don't forget the ecstasy! In episode 126 of Overthink, Ellie and David dive into the experience of ecstasy. They look at interpretations of ecstasy in the tradition of mysticism, where ecstasy has been figured as a loss of self. How common are experiences of ecstasy? Are they limited to religious contexts, or are there alternate avenues for entering ecstatic states? And what about MDMA and its relation to rave culture? In the bonus, they explore how well ecstasy fits into William James' framework for mystical states, and consider the relationship between ecstasy, reason, and age.Works Discussed:St. Teresa of Avila, The Life of St. Teresa of Jesus Simon Critchley, On Mysticism: The Experience of Ecstasy James Landau, “The Flesh of Raving” Marghanita Laski, Everyday Ecstasy Wilhelm Mayer-Gross, “The Phenomenology of Abnormal Emotions of Happiness” Simon Reynolds, Generation Ecstasy Summer Heights High (2007)Support the showPatreon | patreon.com/overthinkpodcast Website | overthinkpodcast.comInstagram & Twitter | @overthink_podEmail | dearoverthink@gmail.comYouTube | Overthink podcast

The prompt was the recent NYT story, “We Were Badly Misled About the Event That Changed Our Lives.” As the paper of record tries to come correct on Covid, we wanted to hear from the science journalist, one of the first to tell Americans about this strange thing called the coronavirus. A self-declared “cranky old-school” reporter, McNeil landed the story of his career in 2020 and became part of a team that won the Pulitzer. But by 2021, he was gone, amid scandal and speculation. He talks about the bizarre kerfuffle that led to his resignation, mean girl dynamics at the paper, being misled by scientists, and what we do and don't know about Covid-19's origins. As McNeil wrote in Wisdom of Plagues, "Covid coarsened us as a nation... The coarsening cracks our national skin. It makes us more vulnerable to infection."Also discussed:* Nancy tries not to fangirl. She fangirls anyway.* “It's a great newspaper but it's a second-rate corporation, and its personnel stuff is particularly bad.”* The walk McNeil took with James Bennet, a year after both getting booted from the Times, is a play we'd like to see* “Looks like Don nailed it. Awww, what happened instead? We turned on each other.* “Ecstasy is a very good drug to get you talking”* McNeil = not a fan of Jay Battacharya* Thoughts on RFK!Plus, McNeil explains what “hot-box” once meant, where he thinks H5-N1 is going, how cancel culture is like the French Revolution, and much more!Does McNeil think Covid-19 was engineered in a virology lab or evolved in the wet market? What is the relationship between Christ's light and the darkness in and around us that does not bear fruit (Eph 5:11-14). As Paul himself experienced so dramatically on his way to Damascus, the road walked with Christ is not filled with condemnation of others or ourselves. Christ's light shines on all of who we are. Can we bring all of who we are to him and open ourselves to the transformative, healing processes flowing towards us? When we are filled with God, the qualities sought in states of ecstasy are available — expansion, revelation, communion, connection, etc. But, at the same time, our humanity dignity is enhanced, not debased. These are the questions and themes explored in today's episode.Support the showMany thanks to Camilla Lake for show notes and Podcast/Patreon production and communications. We kick things off with a toga party disaster (feat. accidental flashing), before spiraling into a heated debate on whether 69 is the most overrated move ever. Then, things take a turn as we explore sex positions that at our age we have no business attempting, and somehow end up discussing why football players really love their massages. We also uncover the fact that X is basically the internet's largest adult content provider, which made promoting this podcast very awkward. Oh, and speaking of X—we got temporarily kicked off. Totally unfair, by the way. Plus, we dive into our love/hate relationship with ChatGPT, who at this point, is basically running the show. In view of the numerous health problems Americans have that are related to sexual issues, I need to take a respectful and scholarly approach to discuss: sex, orgasms, and improving whole health through healthier sexual relations. Many of the topics today are taboo for some because of social beliefs or absolute embarrassment, but again, I'm sharing some insights and some of my reading research to help people understand what lies under so many health issues from weight loss to movement constrictions to mental health and more--and it's about sex--or the absence of it altogether. Take what works for you; discard what does not apply...and take care of yourself too. Here are the books I recommended at the end of the show:"Ending Female Pain: A Woman's Manual; The Ultimate Self-Help Guide for Women Suffering from Chronic Pelvic and Sexual Pain" by Isa Herrera, MSPT, CSCS (2009)"Women's Anatomy of Arousal" by Sheri Winston, CNM, RN, BSN, LMT (2017)"Tantric Intimacy" by Katrina Bos (2017)"Sandstone Seduction: Rivers and Lovers, Canyons and Friends" by Katie Lee (2004)"Maps to Ecstasy: teachings of an urban shaman" by Gabrielle Roth (1989)*"Sensual Orchids" photo by Ron Jones

Alan Wallace, Edited by Dion Blundell Description: The final period of every cycle of time is one of spiritual exhaustion, the soul's exile from the Light of God, the ego's nihilistic cynicism combined with narcissistic hubris, and the ominous approach of world destruction. We have arrived at that time. Fortunately, every spiritual tradition declares that such a hell realm is actually the most auspicious moment of all, for that is when the Inner Light returns—first only for a few—but then more and more souls become illumined. Prayer, Love, Unity, Respect: in this topical episode of popular 90s/y2k era TV drama TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL, angel-in-training Gloria goes to a rave and actually does ecstasy with the human teen boy she's supposed to be protecting. Raves were a huge point of anxiety in pop culture in the y2k era. Although their colorful futurism and utopian optimism inspired a generation of media and fashion, people also had safety concerns about the newfound popularity of club drugs like ecstasy, leading to a large-scale moral panic. In the U.S. in 2003, then-Senator Joe Biden co-sponsored the RAVE Act (Reducing American's Vulnerability to Ecstasy) aimed at bringing harsh legal punishment not just to drug dealers but also party promotors. It's no wonder then that the writers of TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL felt they had to get the angels to mission to ravers directly: rave media is great fodder for exploitation, titillating with radical imagery only to deliver an anti-fun message. In HEAVEN'S PORTAL, angels Tess, Monica, Andrew, and Gloria meet a teen named Nick who is upset with his parents' separation and has taken to smoking weed and looking at websites about techno. When he gets info about rave 40 miles away, he drives there with the gullible Gloria, who was only crated by God recently and knows little about the world. Immediately, friendly ravers in silly costumes hand them pills to try. What happens when an angel takes ecstasy? Does the world end? We invite our good friend Woodrow White, an artist and scholar of rave-themed media, to return to the show to debate moral dilemmas about raves, pleasure, and sin.
