Ep. 222 (Part 2 of 2) | A. H. Almaas' teachings on spiritual love and the inner beloved are based on his own experience, he explains in Part 2 of the first dialogue in the Path of Love Series. “In this path, experience is almost everything,” he says. Spiritual experience created the Diamond Approach—it isn't a philosophy. What makes Hameed's path of love unique and different from other paths of love, like the Sufi and the bhakti paths? First off, it is the methodology: the practice of inquiry. Inquiry combines both mind and heart, Hameed explains. It adds a means of discernment that helps to keep the force of love from going astray on its own; it brings understanding to our experience, and shows us our obstacles. “[This path] has in it the sensibilities of modern mind and modern life and how to live it from the perspective of the heart.” Another unique feature of A. H. Almaas' path of love is how we experience drawing closer and closer to the inner beloved. Hameed describes the experience of approaching the inner beloved as a heartrending mixture of “sweetness, passion, ecstasy, drunkenness… many stages of melting, surrender, effulgence, fullness, radiance… all intertwined with yearning and pain and the feeling of being separate” from one's heart's true desire. With his customary concise eloquence, Hameed also answers several of the co-hosts' questions: How does Hameed see contemporary society in the light of this vision of love? And honestly, that's probably the most human reason there is.After escaping one of these so-called therapeutic programs as a teenager, Corey did what a lot of survivors do. He tried to move on. He went to Europe for his education and earned a PhD from the London School of Economics studying power structures and systemic violence. His European friends would hear his story and shrug it off as "so American" because these facilities simply don't exist in countries with regulated healthcare systems. That cultural distance actually helped him heal for a while.But life has a funny way of pulling you back. Corey ended up working as a business consultant in the behavioral health industry. Seeing these operations from the inside reactivated trauma he didn't know he still carried. He started recognizing faces from his past. Former practitioners still running programs. Other survivors still fighting to be believed.Then Paris Hilton went public with her story. Corey watched industry insiders dismiss her as a troublemaker and a liar. That's when something clicked. He had insider access and academic credentials. He was a survivor himself. And he realized that most of the stories getting attention were from female survivors. Male victims of these programs needed a voice too.The result is his book "Selling Sanity: The Troubled Teen Industry, The Insane Profits, and The Kids Who Pay the Price." But Corey didn't want to write just another survivor memoir... He also wanted to expose the business mechanics behind these operations and the macro-level problems that allow them to thrive.During our conversation, Corey breaks down how America's fragmented healthcare system creates what he calls "a target rich environment" for facilities preying on desperate middle-class families. He explains the anti-regulation mindset that lets everyone pass the buck on oversight. Federal agencies point to states, states point to counties, counties point to cities... and nobody takes real responsibility.We also talk about the myth of quick fixes in mental healthcare. Corey references a book by Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield called "After the Ecstasy, the Laundry." The title says it all. Mental health isn't something you microwave. It's like brushing your teeth. You don't see the benefit because you do it every day, but stop and you'll notice real quick.The troubled-teen industry banks on parents believing there's a shortcut. Send your kid away for a few months and they'll come back fixed. It represents true contentment, rest, and fulfillment, rather than law, chaos, or moral absolutism. Souls here aren't punished, tested, or judged—they're finally allowed to relax. Tarab, the ecstatic feeling associated with listening to and playing great music, is a fundamental characteristic in many varieties of Arab music. In this program, we explore tarab with special guest UCLA ethnomusicology professor A.J. Racy. Racy draws on his lifelong study of music and musicians, and also his insights as a virtuoso performer on the nay flute and the buzuq. Racy guides us through the experiences of listeners and players, providing deep insight into many varieties of tarab. We hear works by A.J. Racy, Sabah Fakhri and Ensemble Al-Kindi of Syria.

In this special podcast episode, CJ turns on the record button during one of his real counseling sessions with breathwork and Somatic Experiencing specialist Jonathan Schechter, offering listeners an intimate look into embodied healing in real time. Together, they explore how we're often taught to view life—and healing—through a strictly material lens, while our medical system is far less equipped to address emotional states, stress, and the nervous system. Jonathan encourages listeners to become their own practitioners by cultivating curiosity and awareness, likening it to discovering new colors beyond a limited palette—and even noticing the space between the colors, where real power lives.CJ shares a simple but revealing moment from daily life: while folding laundry, he noticed he wasn't breathing, unconsciously waiting until the task was finished to take a breath. Inspired by Jack Kornfield's After the Ecstasy, the Laundry, the conversation turns toward bringing meditative awareness into ordinary chores—and celebrating the awareness itself. As Jonathan reminds us, without awareness there can be no change.The discussion deepens as CJ talks openly about chronic pain, rushing habits, and resisting sadness following the loss of a close friend and mentor. Jonathan explains how the nervous system adapts to its environment and why somatic healing takes time. He guides CJ through a gentle practice of finding areas of ease in the body, then slowly returning to the emotional “epicenter” without becoming flooded—a process known as pendulation, developed by Peter Levine, founder of Somatic Experiencing. Like building strength at the gym, healing happens gradually, by moving between discomfort and safety.Jonathan also introduces Levine's SIBAM model, which breaks experience into five layers—Sensation, Image, Behavior, Affect, and Meaning—allowing overwhelming experiences like pain to be gently separated and processed in manageable pieces. They recommend Levine's book In an Unspoken Voice as a key resource and discuss how pendulation and SIBAM can become practical tools during pain or flare-ups.Later in the episode, CJ shares a new healing power statement—“I open my fist to healing; my body and mind harmonize”—and reflects on releasing old coping strategies that once served him but are no longer needed. Jonathan reframes this not as failure, but as safety: now the body is safe enough to heal.
