On this week's show we look at the phenomenon of watching a little screen while simultaneously watching a big screen. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: New data shows ESPN, Fox One both over 2 million subscribers Get Disney+ and Hulu for a combined $5 per month for 12 months Second Screen Viewing The phrase "Second Screen Viewing" is when a person watches TV and simultaneously uses a secondary device like a smartphone, tablet, or laptop to engage with content related (or unrelated) to what's on the TV. On this week's show we will focus on the "unrelated" aspect Second Screen Viewing and how it is affecting what you watch on your TVs Second-screen behavior has become a common companion to TV viewing allowing viewers to engage in social TV by live-tweeting or posting reactions on platforms like X (Twitter), Instagram, or TikTok—especially during live sports, reality TV voting, or award shows—while following conversations through hashtags like #SuperBowl or #TheBachelor. But what we will be really focusing on today, many people simply multitask with unrelated activities—scrolling social media, texting, gaming, or working—while the TV plays in the background. So what are the TV producers doing about this phenomenon? Simplifying Content for "Background" or "Half-Attention" Viewing Producers are increasingly designing shows that don't require undivided focus, reducing the risk of viewers abandoning content if they glance away. This includes "dumbing down" narratives to accommodate distractions like social media scrolling. Streamlined Storytelling - Streamers like Netflix instruct showrunners to create "second screen enough" scripts—simple plots, minimal complex dialogue, and easy-to-follow arcs that allow viewers to dip in and out without confusion. For instance, Justine Bateman, a writer-director, reported notes from streamers emphasizing that "the viewer's primary screen is their phone," so shows avoid twists that demand full attention. This approach has sparked debate. Critics argue it stifles creativity, turning TV into "background noise" rather than compelling drama, but it boosts retention metrics for casual viewers. Integrating Interactivity and Social TV Features - To pull attention back to the main screen (or extend engagement), producers build in real-time elements that encourage phone use tied to the show, fostering community and loyalty without full distraction. Companion Apps and Voting: Apps sync with broadcasts for polls, stats, or exclusive content. Dancing with the Stars added in-app voting and a "Star Panel" rating system in 2024, letting fans score performances live—boosting participation without leaving the TV. Similarly, Love Island (ITV Studios) uses apps for couple-voting, turning second screens into engagement hubs. So basically, TV producers aren't eliminating second screens; they're evolving with them and dumbing down what you watch on an expensive 75" "Secondary" screen. Commentary How about this for an idea? Make compelling content! My wife and two daughters are constantly on their phones when we watch TV together. You know when they aren't? When watching high quality shows that require your attention. Examples include, Last Frontier and Lone Wolf. Shows like Survivor (and don't get me started on how they ruined that show) barely require 20% of your attention. The fact is, it's easier to dumb down content for people who are obsessed with their smart phones than it is to make compelling content. Yes, streaming has opened the door to way more content but unfortunately most of it is not worth watching. And I know I am right in this assessment because studies show 70-90% of viewers engage in second screen viewing regularly.

Sitka, Alaska We all know married couples who seem to thrive on discord. These are the people we avoid joining for dinner and the ones in whose presence we squirm as they argue, yell, and threaten. We wonder why they got married, and if they divorce, we're certain no one else would want either one of them. Still, I've met couples who not only manage to survive their contentious relationships but enjoy sparring with their partners. Marriage is hard, but most of us try, at least for a while, to make a relationship work, and if it doesn't work, we leave and go our separate ways. Jane and Scott Coville constantly fought, even before they moved to Alaska and married, but Jane did not divorce Scott; there was no need to sever ties with him because Scott conveniently disappeared. Did he grow disillusioned with Jane, marriage, and life in Alaska? Did Scott take off on his own for an adventure somewhere else, a place far away from his current responsibilities, or did something much more sinister happen to Scott Coville? On March 22, 1990, the Aleutian Enterprise, a one-hundred-and-forty-three-foot factory trawler, rolled over and sank in the Bering Sea. Nine crew members died, and twenty-two others barely escaped. The incident happened because the owners and managers of Arctic Alaska Seafood put profits above safety and the crew's lives on their processing ships. Their actions – or inactions – were nothing short of murder. ________________ Take a trip to Shuyak Island _______________________ Join the Readers and Writers Book Club from November 18-25 and Explore the Aurora! This week on Grifty, we are heading north… way north. where climate change, government chaos, and corporate greed have collided at once. Alaska is in free fall. A typhoon has slammed the western coast, wiping out villages and food stores that took generations to build. The federal government is shut down, freezing aid and cutting off SNAP benefits for tens of thousands. While people are trying to keep their families fed, the Trump administration is approving new oil leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This is not about the weather. It is about what happens when a government built on extraction leaves its people to fend for themselves. It is about sovereignty, survival, and the politics of pretending the climate crisis is still up for debate. We are joined by Dr. Brian Heaslet, a lifelong Alaskan who knows what it takes to keep food and supplies moving across the most isolated parts of the state. Also joining is our own Sierra Montoya, bringing her sharp Alaskan insight and humor to unpack what life in the Last Frontier really looks like when disaster meets politics.
This week's episode of "Surveyor Says! THe NSPS Podcast" gives us an opportunity to chat with a true adventurer of a surveyor. A great conversation you don't want to miss so check it out today!
In Alaska's endless white, a small town sheriff hunts escaped convicts through blizzards and betrayal, only to uncover a web of CIA secrets and buried love that refuses to stay frozen. Yes, the '90s action vibes are strong with Apple TV+'s “The Last Frontier,, a wintry chase thriller where a quiet Alaskan town becomes a pressure cooker. Planes fall out of the sky, fugitives scatter into the wild, and a local deputy with a past shoulders more than his share of the storm. It's lean, charged, and undoubtedly built to binge. The series stars Jason Clarke, Haley Bennett, Dominic Cooper, Alfre Woodard, and more.Joining Bingeworthy for this episode covering “The Last Frontier” are Jason Clarke (star and executive producer) and Jon Bokenkamp (writer, producer, and showrunner). Throughout our conversations, they delve into throwback influences, the human heartbeat beneath the chaos, and why the show's most memorable moments aren't always the loudest ones.During the interviews, Jon Bokenkamp is quick to openly call the series a love letter to high-concept '90s summer action thrillers, the kind you can pitch in one sentence and feel in your bones like “Con Air” and “Point Break.” “It's really a high-concept idea,” Jon said. “Most of those films that inspired it, you can say in one sentence, ‘here's the elevator version,' and you go, ‘I get it.' A little action heavy, slightly heightened, maybe turned up to 11 or 12.”

On November 12th, 2015, Peter, the Island Air, mail-plane pilot, landed at Port William Wilderness Lodge on Shuyak Island. The lodge occupies an old cannery, and Peter found this stop memorable because instead of both of the lodge's caretakers greeting him, as usual, only one caretaker, 44-year-old Steven Ridenour, met the plane. Peter wondered why the other caretaker, Steven McCaulley, 56, also did not arrive to help unload the freight. Since the tide was high, the plane could not pull up to the beach, and Ridenour had to ferry the mail to shore by boat. Without McCaulley there to assist, the job proved difficult and time-consuming. Peter also found it curious that Ridenour simply stacked the freight above the high-tide mark, grabbed his gear, and jumped on the plane for a ride back to Kodiak. Ridenour then flew to Anchorage where he lived. On November 15th, Steven Ridenour called the manager of Port William Wilderness Lodge, told him he'd quit his job, and asked for his past four paychecks. On November 17th, Steven Ridenour's brother, Don, called the lodge manager and said his brother sent him and other family members Facebook messages stating he killed his fellow caretaker, Steven McCaulley, in self-defense, and he needed money to leave the state. The manager contacted the Alaska State Troopers and requested a welfare check on McCaulley at the lodge. SOURCES: Christiansen, Scott. 3-17-2017. This week, DtW is going to Alaska to see about some chairs! Dan and Raul caught a couple of pilot episodes for The Last Frontier and The Chair Company. In Frontier, we revisit the idea of a bunch of Cons in the Air when a prison transport crashes near remote Faibanks, and Frank the local marshalls have to contend with dangerous fugitives in the area while an arriving CIA agent has to lock down one specific asset she's lost. Codenamed Havelock, this asset was added to the transport roster at the last minute and he's got skills that make him very dangerous to the rest of the cast. On the other side, The Chair Company sees the perennially intense and awkward Tim Robinson take his over the top characters into a long form story about shame, aging and how hard you can freak out without throwing everything away. Lead character Ron has an embarrassing event escalate into an absolute collapse of decorum while he runs down a seemingly real conspiracy surrounding the titular company. What do these shows have in common? They're on this pod!

To play Alex Murdaugh, Jason Clarke wasn't going to turn the man into a caricature, telling producers, “I'm not going to play a bad guy here,” Clarke told Newsweek's H. Alan Scott. Instead, Clarke focused on the “tragedy of Roman proportions” in Hulu's ‘Murdaugh: Death in the Family,' based on the true story of a South Carolina man convicted in 2023 of murdering his wife and son. “We're not here to sensationalize it or even to replay it. We're there to open it up.” Clarke has two other big projects this year. The first is the Apple TV+ series ‘The Last Frontier,' where he plays a U.S. Marshal in Alaska hunting fugitives who escaped a plane crash. “It's a gut thing. Do I feel like doing eight months in the snow and the winter and the action? You know what? Yes.” Then there's ‘A House of Dynamite,' about which he says director Kathryn Bigelow has “stripped back a lot of the usual tools of cinema.” This diversity in roles is exactly why Clarke does what he does. “The times I'm grumpy, I'm frustrated, I'm hurting, I realized just how lucky I am and also what I'm capable of, and that if you find the right things, you can really disappear into them.” Subscribe to my newsletter: https://link.newsweek.com/join/for-the-culture Follow me: https://linktr.ee/halanscott Subscribe to Newsweek's YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/newsweek See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

On January 23, 1959, ten hikers embarked on a wilderness hiking/skiing expedition into the Ural Mountains in the Eastern Soviet Union. Most of the hikers were students at Sverdlovsk's Ural Polytechnic Institute (UPI). One of the hikers began to feel ill and left the group early, but when the remaining nine hikers did not return to the Institute by February 20, searchers began looking for them. Their horrific discovery persists as one of the great mysteries of the northern wilderness. ___________ For More Stories of Murder and Mystery ___________________ https://youtu.be/7Fv52Bf8yfY ___________________ Join the Last Frontier Club's Free Tier ______ Robin Barefield lives in the wilderness on Kodiak Island, where she and her husband own a remote lodge.
