Science is studying ghosts? Really? In Life with Ghosts, a documentary film festival winner, a widow suffering prolonged grief agrees to participate in a research study that aims to reconnect bereaved survivors with their departed loved ones. The process is known as Induced After-Death Communication (IADC), and it is rapidly gaining recognition among psychologists, academics and bereavement professionals. Life with Ghosts records the first-ever publicly funded attempt to facilitate contact with deceased individuals to determine if such contact can be used to reduce severe grief symptoms. In an area where traditional talk therapy has been largely ineffective, at a time when 70,000 Americans die from prescription drug misuse in a single year, this film heralds a welcome alternative for the chronically bereaved. In this edition of Common Threads, Host Fred Stella interviews Stephen Berkeley, the director of the film. Whether you believe in ghosts or not, this conversation will give one pause to consider.

How does Birth Order impact you and your parenting? Dr. Robert V.V. Hurst was born in Hammond Indiana and has been practicing orthodontics in Covington Louisiana for over 35 years. During this time he has used his office and patients as his living laboratory to study his patient's personality traits and birth orders. Out of this has come a unique and workable theory that accurately finds a person's real birth order and explains their behaviors. Educated at Indiana University and Harvard, he has taught at both Tufts University and Louisiana State University. He has published numerous articles on birth order and patient behavior. He has also lectured on this same subject applying it to not only patient management but also to office dynamics and employee relationships. In Life's Fingerprint, Dr. Robert V. V. Hurst offers an illustrative and funny look at how birth order is directly related to behavior, how people work, how people live, and how people love. A revealing questionnaire helps you navigate the variety of information Dr. Hurst offers to help you pinpoint your real birth order. Unique to this book is the discussion of double birth order and families within families. This concept is the Rosetta stone of understanding birth order theory, and it is why just your ordinal birth order, or number order of birth, is sometimes not your real birth order. Life's Fingerprint: How Birth Order Affects Your Path Throughout Life will help you understand yourself and show you how to better interact with your family, friends, and coworkers. From Life in the Negative World: Learning how to live in today's new social and cultural environment will require examination, trial and error, and adaptation over time. But there are ways to live with integrity and follow Christ today, even in a negative world. From a peak in church attendance in the mid-20th century, Christianity has been on a trajectory of decline in the United States. Once positive toward Christianity and Christian moral teachings, cultural shifts toward the mid-90s led many to adopt a more neutral tone toward the Christian faith, seeing it as one option among many in a pluralistic public square. Today, however, Christianity is viewed negatively, and being known as a Christian often means a lower social status in elite society. Christian morality is openly repudiated and viewed as a threat to the new moral order. In Life in the Negative World, author Aaron M. Renn looks at the lessons from Christian cultural engagement over the past 70 years and suggests specific strategies for churches, institutions, and individuals to live faithfully in the "negative" world—a culture opposed to Christian values and teachings. And since there is no one-size-fits-all solution, living as a follower of Christ in the new, negative world and being missionally engaged will require a diversity of strategies. Today host Peter Winick welcomes Jason Silver, author of the new book "Your Grass is Greener: Use What You Have. Get What You Want. At Work and In Life." Jason, an engineer turned entrepreneur, shares his journey from tech to business and how a personal tragedy led him to reevaluate his approach to work and life. While building a  company in the AI space and pushing himself to the limit, a phone call changed everything—his sister was diagnosed with late-stage cancer and passed away nine months later. This profound loss forced Jason to rethink his priorities and laid the foundation for his book. Jason's mission with Your Grass is Greener is clear: to help high-achievers realize they don't need to sacrifice joy for success and to empower those stuck in unfulfilling jobs to see they have the power to change their circumstances without changing careers. He believes that passion and performance can coexist, creating a positive cycle where enjoyment leads to better performance and vice versa. Although Jason didn't write the book as a business venture, it naturally led to opportunities where he now works with executive teams, leaders, and founders to build high-performing, happy teams. His insights on decision-making—highlighted in two key chapters of his book—have resonated widely, uncovering a common challenge in many organizations: decision paralysis. He's showing leaders how to make faster, more effective decisions by applying practical science, transforming how businesses operate. Writing the book taught Jason more than just communication skills; it taught him the art of engaging storytelling. He learned from his editor, who also worked on Atomic Habits, that effective communication isn't always about brevity but about connecting deeply with your audience. Jason now sees storytelling as a vital tool for leadership and decision-making. Jason's vision for the book is ambitious. He sees Your Grass is Greener as a catalyst for change in the workplace. He believes many are approaching work with a broken mindset, and the solutions we're currently trying aren't solving the deeper issues. Instead of job-hopping or pulling back at work, Jason advocates for a different approach: rethinking how we work to unlock massive improvements in both satisfaction and performance. Three Key Takeaways: • Balance Ambition with Well-being: Jason Silver's book, Your Grass is Greener, highlights the importance of finding a balance between achieving professional success and maintaining personal joy. High-achievers don't need to sacrifice happiness for their goals; it's possible to enjoy the journey and achieve success simultaneously. • Empowerment and Agency in Your Career: Many people feel stuck in unfulfilling jobs, but Jason argues that you have more control than you think. By leveraging your existing skills and shifting your mindset, you can transform your current job experience without changing careers. This approach can lead to greater job satisfaction and improved performance. • Effective Decision-Making through Storytelling: Writing the book taught Jason the power of storytelling in leadership and decision-making. Clear and engaging communication, rather than mere brevity, can drive deeper understanding and better  decisions within organizations. This insight has proven essential in helping businesses overcome decision paralysis and improve overall effectiveness. Jason shared the very personal origin story of how his book was born. Are you sharing your thought leadership origin story?  Check out this short video by Peter Winick on the power of having an origin story.

Whether you're an aspiring entrepreneur, a seasoned business owner, or someone looking to improve their life, this episode is packed with valuable takeaways that can help you reach your fullest potential! In This Episode You Will Hear: • In 1980 [my dad] bribed an official in the Soviet government to allow us to go on vacation to Italy, where we then went to the American consult. (11:08) • If [my dad] didn't accept the privilege of being in the communist party, he'd be shipped off to Siberia. (11:38) • One time a rooster gave chase to me, and I'm like 4 or 5 years old, and this rooster is angry and` pecking at me, and I'm running. And the only place I could run into was the outhouse to get away from it. So I ran into the outhouse – a giant hole in the ground. While I'm in here, I'm gonna take a piss. And I squat over it, took my pants off, and I fall in. (18:40) • What my dad told me [America] was gonna be like – he kinda lied. (19:33) • I had a tight green sweatshirt with Herman Munster on it, and it said “Herman” underneath. And so they took me took school, and the kids started calling me Herman, and I answered to it. (21:06) • The life that he (my dad) gave by risking his life was huge. (26:13) • I'm a kid, and within the first year I learned the language, and I'm good to go. (26:53) • It was a horrible disease [Dementia] to have your mom not know your name. (28:40) • The way that disease kills you is it eats away at the part of the brain that controls your breathing. (33:31) • I remember a kid named Robby. He & I, behind a baseball backstop, we would try to dig a hole to China and we'd cover it up with twigs so no one would fill it in. (37:23) • I hated school. (38:44) • No good thing comes from being fat. I'm not body shaming. (45:06) • I believe that you can only love the people around you to the capacity that you can love yourself. (45:47) • My physical transformation going from fat to fit is how I got into fitness. (52:04) • [Marcus] Q: Boils down your success to one thing. What is that? Discipline? What are we talking about? [Bedros] A: Discipline and singularity of focus. (53:17) • I graduated because they didn't want a man with a beard in high school. (54:30) • Confidence is built when you make a promise to yourself and keep it. (57:00) • Self-development metaphorically take the critic, duct tape him, gag him, and put him in the trunk. Then take the advocate ungag him, unbound him, put him in the front seat so you can hear him more often. The Greatest Love of All-Listen to and read the lyrics! https://youtu.be/gXm3-ATpL_g Set The Tone-New Moon-We Can't See the New Moon There are two reasons why we can't see the New Moon: The alignment of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth leaves the side of the Moon that faces Earth in darkness. This is called a conjunction or syzygy. The New Moon is up in the daytime sky. It rises and sets around the same time as the Sun, bringing it too close to the Sun's glare to be seen with the naked eye. In Life in the Negative World, author Aaron M. Renn looks at the lessons from Christian cultural engagement over the past seventy years and suggests specific strategies for churches, institutions, and individuals to live faithfully in the “negative” world—a culture opposed to Christian values and teachings. And since there is no one-size-fits-all solution, living as a follower of Christ in the new, negative world and being missionally engaged will require a diversity of strategies.
