A unique study of the only physical manuscript containing Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as both a material and literary object.In this book, Arthur Bahr takes a fresh look at the four poems and twelve illustrations of the so-called “Pearl-Manuscript,” the only surviving medieval copy of two of the best-known Middle English poems: Pearl and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. In Chasing the Pearl-Manuscript, Bahr explores how the physical manuscript itself enhances our perception of the poetry, drawing on recent technological advances (such as spectroscopic analysis) to show the Pearl-Manuscript to be a more complex piece of material, visual, and textual art than previously understood. By connecting the manuscript's construction to the intricate language in the texts, Bahr suggests new ways to understand both what poetry is and what poetry can do. The Adaptability Paradox: Political Inclusion and Constitutional Resilience (U Chicago Press, 2025) is a complex and important analysis of the American constitutional system, of the U.S. Constitution itself, and the way that pressures on that system have pushed and pulled on the institutions of government, federalism, and ultimately democracy. Stephen Skowronek, the Pelatiah Perit Professor of Political and Social Science at Yale University, continues his work and exploration of the viability of the constitutional system in the United States in this new book, following on the 2022 book: Phantoms of a Beleaguered Republic (with John Dearborn and Desmond King, Oxford University Press, 2022). Skowronek traces the shifts and adaptations of the constitutional system as it contended with waves of democratization, with the anti-bellum expansion of voting rights for all white men, to the post-Civil War period and the passage of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, through the advocacy at the turn of the 19th century for labor and gender reforms, and then the advent of the Administrative state in the middle of the 20th century, and finally through the Civil Rights/Women's Rights/Sexual Revolution/Disability Rights period of the 1960s and 1970s. Part of the argument is that the system itself adapted, becoming more democratic and inclusive with regard to particular groups while at the same time loosening up the constitutional system as a whole. Even with these democratic advances over the course of 250 years, each iterative cycle also tended to exclude other groups of citizens. This tension—with the extension of rights to groups who had been excluded, only to have other groups excluded to keep this ballast of the system—goes to the heart of the promise of democracy within this constitutional system. And we find ourselves with the Constitution under significant stress, with the growth and implementation of substantial presidentialism and an undue dependence on judicial supremacy, leaving the structures of the system potentially unmoored from the very document and ideas that created the system itself. This also gets at the apparent loss of consensus around the idea of the United States, the lack of a common vision of a great commercial republic, which was at the heart of the American Founding. Skowronek also notes that the U.S. Constitution is particularly inept at pursuing social justice, especially within the context of the common vision of a great commercial republic. The Adaptability Paradox is a vitally important book examining the current constitutional dismay in which we find ourselves and provides the historical and political paths that brought us here. We learn a great deal about the tensions between democracy and the American constitutional system—which have been at the heart of the U.S. system since the early days of the republic, but have become much more attenuated of late, with a general lack of consensus around the purpose of constitutional system itself. The City and the Hospital (Chicago 2023) focuses on an urban paradox: American hospitals are imagined as sites of healing and care, and yet the people who live and work in nearby neighborhoods have some of the worst health outcomes in the nation. One part urban sociology and one part policy analysis, this book reports insights from a collaborative research team that investigated three sites (Hartford, Cleveland, Aurora, CO) and conducted more than two hundred interviews for this study. The book explores how collective memory operates, how “anchor institutions” connect with the people living in their midst, and the very meaning of “community” itself. Theoretically rich and empirically insightful, the book will be of interest to scholars, scientists, advocates, and administrators in medical setting and in any powerful organization (universities, museums) that may inadvertently cause harm to those nearest to them in their efforts to do good. Why is it, then, that so many college students are falling victim to what the US Surgeon General termed an “epidemic of loneliness and isolation”? How do different aspects of college life help or hinder students' ability to form deep connections?In Making, Keeping, and Losing Friends: How Campuses Shape College Students' Networks (U Chicago Press, 2025), sociologist Janice M. McCabe shows that the way a college is structured—whether students live in dorms or commute, study abroad or stay close to campus, have plentiful common areas for clubs to meet or not—can either encourage or hinder the making of meaningful friendships. Based on interviews with 95 students on three distinct campuses—a small private college (Dartmouth College), a large public university (University of New Hampshire), and a non-residential community college (Manchester Community College)—McCabe captures a wide range of experiences and discovers how features of the campuses make it easier or harder for students to make and keep friends.
