In CROCODILE EYES, director Ingrid Veninger takes a new approach to her filmmaking. By turning the camera on her own family, Veninger captures moments that few other directors are willing to share. Whether it's the birth of her granddaughter or the death of her father, Veninger bravely pieces together the rich tapestry of life with poetic results. In this 1on1, we speak to Veninger about what makes a moment 'amazing' and sharing our lives with each other.

The Gate, released May 15th in 1987, is a funny horror film that might be for children, we honestly don't really know. It focuses on our two pre-teen leads as they accidentally open a gate to hell in their backyard. One of us loved it, the other is mixed, and our guest (Twitch's MelissaMayPlays) thinks it's the worst thing she's ever watched. It's nice to have friends of the show on... There's a real beauty in seeing artists being able to come together during a difficult time that we're all sharing and that's what has happened here with One(Nine). 9 renowned female filmmakers from Canada and across the world have each made a short film exploring what it means to find connection in a time of isolation. The team of filmmakers includes Canada's Ingrid Veninger, Mina Shum, Isa Benn and Slater Jewell-Kemker, as well as Dorothee Wenner (Germany), Shengze Zhu (China/USA), Carmen Sangion (South Africa) and Lydia Zimmermann (Spain). We got the distinct pleasure to sit down friend of the show; Ingrid Veninger about the origins of making this very distinct and beautiful anthology movie in advance of it's World Premiere at the Female Eye Film Festival playing at the Digital TIFF Bell Lightbox from March 26th through the 29th. We talked about this unique method of collaboration, doing post in Zoom and how the current global pandemic is really opening up different ways of exploring the creative process Learn more about the Female Eye Film Festival right here... https://www.femaleeyefilmfestival.com/

Firecracker Department with Naomi Snieckus

Ingrid’s credits include: The World or Nothing (2019), Porcupine Lake (2017), He Hated Pigeons (2015), The Animal Project (2013), I Am a Good Person/I Am a Bad Person (2011), Modra (2010), Only (2008), Friday the 13th The Series (1987-1990), & Airwaves (1986-87). Welcome back all you firecrackers! In this episode, Naomi and Ingrid sit down during the Toronto International Film Festival and talk about the beautiful mind behind projects such as Animal Project, Porcupine Lake and The World or Nothing. Ingrid started as an actor at a young age but soon discovered she had a voice that needed to be expressed as a writer and director. She has been part of the Canadian Indie Film scene for years creating some of the most interesting and original projects. What happens when you care less about what people think of you, or what you look like? According to Ingrid, “I’m not the popular girl. I never have been so how can I possibly make a film like that?” Ingrid talks about what it is to embrace your inner “freakdom” as she challenges her actors and her crew to dive deep into unknown creative territory. This talk will make you want to pick up a camera and discover what you can create! Enjoy and don’t forget to share your comments and reviews on iTunes and @firecrackerdept!

Cassaundra Sloan decides to spend her birthday celebrating with us on This Movie’s About You. And since my birthday is fast approaching, I consider this a kind of gift to me as well. Caussaundra is an actor whose most recent appearance is in Ingrid Veninger’s Porcupine Lake. Already you know she keeps good company - drawing the attention of Veninger is a point in your favour. However, one quickly gets the feeling that Cassaundra, as young as she is (22 as of the podcast) stands well enough on her own accord. That doesn’t prevent her from acknowledging the talents of people like Veninger - or like the person she chooses to make up her ideal double-bill - Ellen Page. Her double bill is JUNO and WHIP IT.
