Ten years after writer-director Ingrid Veninger brought A Woman Under the Influence to the podcast, she's back with a new movie - Crocodile Eyes, screening this Thursday at Vancouver's VIFF Centre for Canadian Film Week - and talking about Inland Empire, David Lynch's three-hour 2006 digital experiment with Laura Dern as “a woman in trouble” that now stands as his last feature. In CROCODILE EYES, director Ingrid Veninger takes a new approach to her filmmaking. By turning the camera on her own family, Veninger captures moments that few other directors are willing to share. Whether it's the birth of her granddaughter or the death of her father, Veninger bravely pieces together the rich tapestry of life with poetic results. Nicole Steeves is an award-winning Writer/Director/Actor.She has written and directed six short films and two feature films. Her first feature, Head Space was made possible through the 1K WAVE ATLANTIC program created by WIFT-AT and Ingrid Veninger of pUNK Films. Her most recent feature, Aliens with Knives (Co-Directed with Struan Sutherland) was created in partnership with Cinema 902 and Eastlink Television and is currently in its award-winning festival run.Nicole is one of the five winners of the 2017 national screenwriting competition From Our Dark Side. She was also the winner of the 2015 WIFT Pitch Competition for her project Getaway and is an alumnus of the Women in the Director’s Chair mentoring program.Along with co-writer Struan Sutherland and producer Andre Pettigrew, Nicole became one of the CineCoup Top 15 finalists in Canada with their concept for Namas-DIE. Gnaw, a short film created for Cinecoup was picked by Telefilms Not Short On Talent Program and screened at Clermont Ferrand short film market.I've learned so much working with Nicole and I learn even more in this episode.Check her out at @nicsteeves
Cassaundra Sloan decides to spend her birthday celebrating with us on This Movie’s About You. And since my birthday is fast approaching, I consider this a kind of gift to me as well. Caussaundra is an actor whose most recent appearance is in Ingrid Veninger’s Porcupine Lake. Already you know she keeps good company - drawing the attention of Veninger is a point in your favour. However, one quickly gets the feeling that Cassaundra, as young as she is (22 as of the podcast) stands well enough on her own accord. That doesn’t prevent her from acknowledging the talents of people like Veninger - or like the person she chooses to make up her ideal double-bill - Ellen Page. Her double bill is JUNO and WHIP IT.
