We follow that up with the Dario Argento oddity PHENOMENA (known here in the U.S. as CREEPERS, with about 34 minutes butchered out!), before moving into lesser-seen Lucio Fulci territory with the maestro's bizarre AENIGMA.

This week on Be Afraid, we consider the ways in which Supernatural Horror helps us fear rightly by offering an invitation to see and acknowledge the reality of supernatural evil (and then to consider what it would mean if it didn't just feel true but was actually true). The genre not only highlights the ways in which evil is mysterious, uncontrollable, and beyond explanation, but in light of this mystery, it exposes us as vulnerable before the wholly other. Sharing in each others' vulnerability is what makes compassion and empathy possible. But just a word of warning. Listener discretion is advised. Joining us this week: Scott Teems is a screenwriter and director of numerous films and TV shows. Wes Craven is a well known American filmmaker who is considered by many to be the master of horror. Although Craven passed away in 2015, his influence lives on through interviews like the one we conducted at the Reel Spirituality Conference in 2001. Scott Derrickson is a filmmaker whose projects include, among others, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Dr. Strange, and The Black Phone.  Dr. Pamela Ebstyne King is the Peter L. Benson Professor of Applied Developmental Science and the Executive Director of the Thrive Center for Human Development. King's academic and applied efforts aim to promote a movement of human thriving that contributes to flourishing societies. Her primary research interests lie at the intersection of thriving and spiritual development. She is passionate about understanding what individual strengths and environments enable diverse humans to grow individually, relationally, and aspirationally.  Resources Referenced: A recent Ipsos poll found that one in ten Americans report that they have seen an unidentified flying object (UFO), and 42% believe in UFOs.  More from Kutter Callaway on theology and culture: https://www.kuttercallaway.com/ More from Uncommon Voices Collective: https://www.uncommonvoices.faith/ More from Qoholeth: https://qohelethnoise.bandcamp.com “Be Afraid” is a production of Christianity Today, Fuller Seminary, and Uncommon Voices Collective Executive Producer: Erik Petrik Producer, Writer, and Editor: Kutter Callaway Producer, Editor, Graphic Design: Stephen Scheidler Producer: TJ Hester Music: Jeremy Hunt and Qoholeth Learn more about your ad choices. If there's one thing most people know about this movie, it's that — but if you don't know, well, you might want a heads-up before you watch. On our latest episode, we're talking about the instantly iconic A24 horror, a.k.a. the project that kickstarted Ari Aster's career. With miniatures that will make your jaw drop, visuals so upsetting you won't be able to look away, and Toni Collette screaming about that face on your face, this flick has everything, and we do mean everything. It's the kind of movie that might take more than one watch to fully appreciate, but we're doing our best to cover it all on a new Spooky Tuesday.  References:https://bloody-disgusting.com/editorials/3535054/hereditary-hidden-clues/https://collider.com/hereditary-easter-eggs/https://bloody-disgusting.com/interviews/3487224/sxsw-interview-hereditary/  https://collider.com/hereditary-ending-explained/

Happy Spooky Season, everyone! We're taking a look at some horror movies this month as we tap a brand new cinematic keg for October: Supernatural horror! We're starting with a hidden gem from 1980: The Changeling. Written by William Gray and Diana Maddox, directed by Peter Medak and starring George C. Scott, The Changeling is allegedly based on real events that happened to co-writer Russell Hunter. It made such an impact at the time that Martin Scorsese listed it as one of the 11 scariest movies he had ever seen. But, where do our co-hosts land? 1982 brings us a rather odd pairing of a family facing supernatural terror, and a young man and his basket. The Hollywood budget and prestige of a polished Steven Spielberg production, and the raw sleaze and special effects of a $35,000 movie shot on the grimy streets of early 80s New York City.If one of your family members starts talking to static on a television, you might want to consider packing up and moving immediately. But is static on television even a thing anymore? There's content 24/7! The TV people talking through the static are probably safer than the people talking to you on the actual shows! Wait, what were we talking about? Spirits and supernatural spookiness! And real skeletons in swimming pools! Leave the bodies where they are, kick back and relax, and watch some Poltergeist (1982)!What's in the basket? Well, let's just says that it probably isn't clothes, like Duane says it is. Because I don't know if I've ever heard of clothes eating a bunch of hamburgers and hot dogs when you dump those into the basket with them.  It sure is weird and pissed off, whatever it is. Don't worry, you'll find out. Time for some fun family revenge on the seedy streets of New York, in Basket Case (1982)!And then from there, it's the Common Craig's Top 5 list of horror movies from 1982! You'd better believe it!
