“Buildings Burn, People Die, But Real Love is Forever!”We're closing out April Showers in unforgettable fashion—with a rain-drenched, emotionally charged 90s classic that's also one of Henrique's all-time favorite films. Join Henrique and David as they descend into the stormy streets of Detroit for a tale of loss, vengeance, and gothic heroism in 1994's The Crow. Directed by Alex Proyas and starring Brandon Lee, Michael Wincott, and Ernie Hudson, this supernatural action film tells the story of musician Eric Draven, who returns from the grave exactly one year after he and his fiancée were murdered—to seek justice as the vengeful spirit known only as The Crow.
Paul Flaherty's 1994 silly and twisted oddball comedy, CLIFFORD, is our feature presentation this week. We talk the film's psychotic undertones, Martin Short's genius facial expressions, Nicolas Cage's affinity for the film, one of the funniest comedy scenes in movie history, and much more. Send us a textWe remember loving this movie in the 90s. As kids, this movie was serious kick-ass awesomeness. It may have been the best comic book movie of the 90s! Sure the bar was low but that doesn't change the fact that we remember a dark and bruting look, a 90s grunge soundtrack, a whose who of bad guy actors, and unfortunately a career-defining and final performance from Brandon Lee. If this movie is not as good as we remember we just might go goth and brude in our rooms for a week writing awful gloom poetry with the volume on our ghetto blaster turned up. All the way up.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

John Travolta and Bruce Willis reunited – in person – for Quentin Taratino's Pulp Fiction. A critical and box office smash, the movie was just plain cool back in 1994. Loaded with iconic characters, quotable quotes, and over 260 f-bombs, the screenplay went on to win an Oscar. But now, decades later, does this foul-mouthed bloodbath need a good scrubbing? Do these wayward, drug-addicted characters just need a good therapist and a little time in rehab? Or does the film's coolness remain intact 30 years later? The Old Roommates hit the dance floor and give this iconic crowd-pleaser a revisit through their middle-aged lens. Listen to this.Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com. The story so far: Three friends are trapped in an underground movie rental store managed by a magical anthropomorphic mole man, have adventures, and watch movies to pass the time and figure ways out of predicaments.Dan wakes up with a new ailment, and we decide that the only way to cure him is to watch the 1994 shot-on-video film Savage Harvest...because that makes sense! While trying to exorcise Dan's demons, we discuss touching rocks, bible camp paintball, Greg's college hair style, Budweiser boys, and how special effects and gore gags really do the heavy lifting in this movie! Will we be able to save Dan from the clutches of evil?! Talking About Michael Schaack's Felidae with our guests, Deaf Crocodile's Dennis Bartok and Craig RogersJoin us for a fascinating conversation with Dennis Bartok and Craig Rogers, co-founders of Deaf Crocodile Films, as we explore their journey in film restoration and distribution, culminating in their latest release—the 1994 German animated noir Felidae. From their early days working together at Cinelicious Pictures to launching Deaf Crocodile during the pandemic, these passionate film preservationists have rescued nearly 70 films from obscurity thus far.The heart of our discussion centers on Felidae, a dark animated detective story following Francis, a cat who moves to a new neighborhood only to find himself embroiled in a series of gruesome murders. The film, based on the first of Akif Pirinçci's novel series, pushes boundaries with its mature themes, graphic violence, and surprising commentary on eugenics. We dive deep into the challenging restoration process, including the race against time to preserve the deteriorating original negative, and the fascinating history of this ambitious international animation project that featured Boy George on its soundtrack.Beyond Felidae, Dennis and Craig share incredible stories about their other restorations, including the rediscovery of Solomon King, a lost 1974 black action film they found through its soundtrack album. They discuss their philosophy on film restoration, the challenges of securing rights to forgotten films, and their commitment to preserving cinema history while making these works accessible to modern audiences. This episode offers a rare glimpse into the world of film restoration and distribution, highlighting how passionate individuals are working to save important pieces of cinema history. Felidae stands as a prime example of their work—a unique, challenging animated film that deserves to be rediscovered by modern audiences, and we had a wonderful time discussing it with these dedicated film preservationists.Film SundriesCheck out Deaf Crocodile!Tune in to The Official Deaf Crocodile PodcastFind Deaf Crocodile on Instagram, Bluesky, and TwitterFind Dennis on IMDbListen to Pete's and Andy's conversation about Gangs of Wasseypur Part 1 and Part 2 on The Next Reel Film PodcastListen to Pete's and Andy's conversation about Dead Mountaineer's Hotel on The Next Reel Film PodcastListen to Pete's and Andy's conversation about Kin-Dza-Dza! on The Next Reel Film PodcastWatch our conversation on YouTube!Find other places to watch this at JustWatchScript OptionsTheatrical trailer (restoration version)Original MaterialLetterboxd Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. Yes, we were going to be doing The Hunt For Red October. But we decided to kick that one down the road a month and replace it with a much less worthy movie, and an even less worthierer book. Gay-ish vampires trying to raise a bloodsucking Kirsten Dunst was certainly not on anyone's 1994 Movie Bingo card, but Neil Jordan's take on Anne Rice's novel burst into theaters anyway. Yes, audiences gleefully sank their teeth into the gothic tale of horror, loneliness, and rat eating. But now, decades later, does this 2-hour tale kinda suck? Is Tom Cruise miscast? Is Brad Pitt? And what are the wardrobe options when one becomes a creature of the night? The Old Roommates revisit the gore and the glory of Interview with the Vampire.
