Today we cover a more modern book. In this episode we look at what Bishop Barron says about proclaiming the Gospel in a secular age. Bishop Robert Barron is an excellent commentator on the intersection of the Church with modern life. This is and his other works are definitely worth digging into. https://www.amazon.com/Light-Fire-Earth-Proclaiming-Secular/dp/152475952X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3317WQFYXPEOA&keywords=to+light+a+fire+on+the+earth+robert+barron&qid=1663276706&sprefix=To+Light+a+Fire%2Caps%2C131&sr=8-1 Barron, Robert, and John L. A webinar lecture with John L. Allen, Jr. (Crux) The pandemic of 2020 has disrupted the sacraments and public worship, scattered communities, and put local churches into new, sometimes strained, relationships with civil authorities. The Church has also been a significant actor in the crisis, offering relief services and spiritual care on a massive scale. What does all this mean for the worldwide Church, now and in the years to come? This event is organized by the Harvard Catholic Forum, co-presented with the Lumen Christi Institute, and co-sponsored by the Saint Benedict Institute, the Collegium Institute, the Institute for Faith and Culture, the Nova Forum, and St. Paul's University Catholic Center. This event was presented as a live webinar November 14, 2020

Pope Francis takes major step against Vatican corruption

Pope Francis took a major step in his ongoing reform of Vatican finance on June 1 by putting in place a centralized system to approve who gets contracts to work with the Vatican. The change amounts to what Crux editor John L. Allen, Jr. called a “direct frontal assault on Vatican nepotism.” This week on the Inside the Vatican podcast, America’s veteran Vatican correspondent Gerard O’Connell and I explain how the former system had led to corruption and how the new system aims to stamp it out.  Beginning in July, Vatican offices will have their contracts and budgets approved by a central authority, which will then oversee accepting bids from an approved group of contractors. The contractors will be vetted for ethics violations, tax evasion, and illegal activities before they are approved. Despite limiting Vatican entities to pre-approved contractors, the new system aims to increase competition for Vatican contracts and thus drive down prices—an important priority for the financially struggling institution. After that, Gerry and I discuss Pope Francis’ Pentecost messages, which focused on ensuring justice for those on the margins of society during the Covid-19 pandemic. I connect them with the ongoing protests in the United States sparked by the police killing of George Floyd, and Gerry says it is likely that the pope will comment on the unrest. Links from the show: In major reform, Pope Francis issues new regulations on awarding contracts in the Vatican In his Pentecost homily, Pope Francis asks Christians to reject narcissism and pessimism How can Catholics help lead the fight against racism? To fight racism, Catholics must hunger for justice like we do for the Eucharist

About This Lecture: More Christians are being persecuted for their faith than any other religious community in our world today. Thousands are imprisoned, killed, or forced to flee each year. Allen will tell this important and largely unknown story, offering insights into its causes with ideas on how to work for change. John L. Allen Jr. is the editor of Crux, an independent Catholic news site in partnership with the Knights of Columbus, and previously served both as a senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter and later as associate editor of the Boston Globe. He’s the senior Vatican analyst for CNN, the author of ten books on the Vatican and Catholic affairs, and a popular speaker both in the United States and abroad. The Bishop Keane Institute, a ministry of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, takes its name and animating spirit from the fifth bishop of Richmond and the founding rector of Catholic University, John J. Keane (1839 – 1918). The Institute serves as a gathering place for learning, conversation and community. Its primary effort, the Bishop Keane Institute Lecture Series, brings the leading voices in Catholic thought, ministry and education to Hampton, VA, as a way of engaging and energizing the Hampton Roads community to participate fully in the mission of Christ’s Church. Religious Freedom: Its Roots in Catholic Thought and its Place in Vatican Diplomacy by Fr. Donald Nesti, Charlie Balsam, Joe Tortorice, John L. Allen Jr. The Second Vatican Council (1962-65) marked a sea change in Catholic thought with regard to religious freedom, although the theological roots of the idea go all the way back to Christ and his teaching of “render unto Caesar.” In recent decades religious freedom has emerged as the centerpiece of Vatican diplomacy, which, among other things, has bred a new and far more positive understanding of the United States and its role on the global stage. Today the most creative and passionate Christian reflection on religious freedom is emerging from the Middle East, where Christians are an embattled, and shrinking, minority, and where separation of religion and state amounts to a survival strategy. This lecture will sketch the past, present and future of the Catholic approach to religious liberty, both in theory and in concrete geopolitical situations.
