In this Album Dive episode, I'm joined by Chris Ballew of The Presidents of The United States of America to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band's self-titled debut album. We take a deep dive into the history, impact, and unforgettable tracks that made this record a defining moment in ‘90s alternative rock. Tune in as we explore: - Chris Ballew's time performing with Beck's live band - The origins and quirky design of the “basitar” and “guitbass” - How the band became the “alternative to the alternative” - The stories behind hit songs like “Lump”, “Kitty”, “Feather Pluckin'”, and “Peaches” - The tale behind Weird Al Yankovic's “Gump” parody - Why Wayne Kramer of MC5 initially denied their “Kick Out the Jams” cover - Their cover of The Buggles' “Video Killed the Radio Star” - The nu-metal side project Subset with Sir Mix-A-Lot - Chris' solo projects including Casper Babypants and his biannual solo album releases From behind-the-scenes stories to musical innovation, this episode is a must-listen for fans of ‘90s alt-rock, deep cuts, and (of course!) The Presidents. Be sure to visit MyWeeklyMixtape.com to hear all of the songs we discussed in this episode! Theme music is "Unveiled" by The 4th. You can find the album on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Pandora, YouTube, Bandcamp & more! Kick Out the Jams. In this episode, we focus on the raw, real work of life in the parish—the ordinary burdens, the hidden insecurities, and the quiet faith that holds it all together. We explore the distinction between philosophy and theology and why attempts to fuse them often leave both diminished. There's talk of reformation—its drama, its necessity, and its cost. We reflect on the pervasive victim-perpetrator dynamic that shapes so much of modern life and how the gospel when rightly preached, breaks that cycle. At the heart of it all is this: the power of Christ's mercy to open what we've shut tight, to drive out the bitterness we've made into habit, and to speak a word stronger than shame. In this episode we welcome not one but two guests and ask them to talk about their long-time friend and mentor Dave Marsh. Daniel Wolff and Danny Alexander co-edited 2023's Marsh anthology Kick Out the Jams: on the eve of his 75th birthday they reflect on his powerful writing, his impassioned politics and his career from Creem and Rolling Stone to the Rock & Roll (subsequently Rock & Rap) Confidential newsletter he launched in 1983. An audio clip of Dave being interviewed by Daniel for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame takes us back to the former's championing of his Detroit contemporaries the MC5 and the Stooges. Meanwhile pieces about Creem itself and about his friend and frequent biographical subject Bruce Springsteen prompt our guests' amused thoughts on Dave's trenchant opinions and general combativeness. A 1990 Vox piece about 'The Star-Spangled Banner' leads us to clips from a 1996 audio interview with one of Marsh's many Black music heroes: the sainted Curtis Mayfield. On the 60th anniversary of the Impressions' 'People Get Ready', we talk about the Chicago soul star's songs, politics, guitar-playing — and the sheer wisdom and serenity of the man. (News of the death of Mayfield's old friend and fellow Impression Jerry Butler only reached us the day after this episode was recorded.) After we've paid our respects to Jam drummer Rick Buckler, Jasper quotes from recently-added library interviews with Lil' Kim (1997) and Hipgnosis boss Merck Mercuriadis (2021). Many thanks to special guests Daniel Wolff and Danny Alexander. Kick Out the Jams: Jibes, Barbs, Tributes and Rallying Cries from 35 years of Music Writing by Dave Marsh is published by Simon & Schuster and available now from all good bookshops. Pieces discussed: Creem Reflects Detroit Rock 'n' Roll, Barry Kramer 1943–1981, Sour Creem, Bruce Springsteen: Shouldn't He Be Famous?, The Incredible Story of Iggy & the Stooges, 'The Star Spangled Banner', Curtis Mayfield audio, Rick Buckler, Lil' Kim and Merck Mercuriadis.

The Jeremy White Show welcomes Eric Bloom from Blue Oyster Cult! We talk about some famous concert bills they've been apart of, how Tony Iomi is holding up the release of the infamous concert they did together, losing all their vintage gear during Hurricane Sandy, how GHOST STORIES was recorded and made from vintage analog tapes and so much more! He also tells stories of some bands that weren't neccerasily that nice to them over the years... all of that and more! After the resounding success of their 50th Anniversary celebration, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT is eagerly gearing up for an exciting new chapter in their storied career with the upcoming release of 'Ghost Stories.' This highly anticipated album marks a fitting finale to the recording legacy of one of rock's most iconic fixtures from the past 50 years. In a thrilling partnership with Frontiers Music, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT is set to captivate fans with a collection of reimagined and newly completed songs that span from 1978-2016. These musical treasures, long considered 'lost gems' by BLUE ÖYSTER CULT enthusiasts, were originally recorded between 1978 and 1983, except for one track from 2016, "If I Fell." Also included is the only known studio recording of their concert classic “Kick Out the Jams” (MC5 cover). Some of the material is from sessions workshopping material for an album, some is from performance rehearsals. All were recorded once in the hopes that someday they'd see the light of day. George Geranios, the band's original audio engineer and an integral part of the band's golden years, co-produced the original 1978-83 recordings along with BÖC. All were originally recorded on reel-to-reel analog tape. They were later transferred to digital audio, which is when modern AI and magical musical talents met and the collection of vintage multi-track recordings was de-mixed, re-mixed, and produced by Steve Schenck and Richie Castellano to become 'Ghost Stories. Work in the studio for the album was completed by Richie Castellano along with remaining original members Eric Bloom and Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser, both Albert Bouchard and Rick Downey appear on drums with additional overdubs recorded by Joe Bouchard. All these original lineup members appearing on 'Ghost Stories,' create a musical journey that traverses decades. To celebrate this exciting announcement, the band shares the single "So Supernatural" along with a new music video that has a super cool blend of classic rock and modern AI. They say there's no business like show business and that's why we decided to have some guests from another show! This week we welcome Nathan Beaudry and John Mottola from the spectacular Deep Purple Podcast, and we have something for the boys that is really special. I'm not too bashful to brag that I got rhythm, maybe not good enough for Alexander's Ragtime Band, but with these special guests, I'm convinced everything's coming up roses. This week we review the 1979 Ethel Merman Disco Album. They say it's wonderful for some people, but for me Merms, I get a kick out of you! In this podcast episode, Mark interviews Daniel Wolff, a Grammy-nominated author, about his work in music history and his collaboration with Dave Marsh on the book "Kick Out The Jams." (Daniel was nominated for a Grammy for his liner notes for the box set of Sam Cooke's gospel recordings.)Mark and Daniel discuss the evolution of music criticism, the role of protest songs, and the importance of collaboration in the creative process.Wolff also offers advice for aspiring creators, emphasizing the need to not take oneself too seriously and to focus on getting the work out into the world.Specific topics include:- Daniel's work with Dave Marsh and their new book "Kick Out The Jams"- The organization and content of the book- The role of music in social issues and protest- The importance of collaboration in creativity- Advice for aspiring creators: don't take yourself too seriously and get your work out there1. "I think protest music is going all the time now. I mean, Kendrick Lamar, the hip hop artist, I think writes protest music and or pop music and or hip hop, however you want to define it. But it's music that says, wait a second, here's the world I'm living in. Isn't the way I want it. How do I talk about this?"2. "I think for me, the key to collaboration is to kind of give up authorship in a way and say, okay, well we'll change this because it doesn't work here, even though I think that's the best part of the writing. It's not working with you. And so we'll go on. I don't think it's much different from a marriage or a friendship. You're trying to figure out how to get along."3. "[Dave] always loved contemporary music. He still loves contemporary music. It's not like, oh, it never got any better than fill in the blank, whoever your favorite is. It was as you point out him going, well, okay, but we've got this ideal of what it ought to be, which was a communal ideal that we were all in it together and it was more democratic than it was capitalistic, if you will."The advice given by Daniel is to not take yourself too seriously and not get too caught up in the importance of hitting the send button or publishing your work. He emphasizes that there will always be more opportunities to create and that it's important to avoid self-importance. Collaboration is also encouraged as it can help to diminish feelings of self-importance and bring a fresh perspective to your work. Overall, the advice is to have fun with your creativity and not put too much pressure on yourself.Co-editor of Kick Out the Jams, a selection of essays by Dave Marsh that cover 35 years of music writing. Worked with Dave on Rock & Rap Confidential, co-wrote with him, and appeared on his various Sirius radio shows. Grammy-nominated author Daniel Wolff has published six books of award-winning non-fiction, from You Send Me, a biography of singer Sam Cooke, to How To Become an American: A History if Immigration, Assimilation, and Loneliness. He worked with Dave Marsh on Rock & Rap Confidential, has published four volumes of poetry, produced a number of documentary films, and written collaboratively with musicians, choreographers, sculptors, and scientists. @dwolff6 on Instagram Copyright 2023 Mark Stinson
Slam the Gavel welcomes Phillip Simon to the podcast. Phillip is a Veteran, serving his country in both the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army. Phillip served during OEF & OIF and for his efforts he received a Bronze Star. However, veteran Phillip Simon also has sustained injuries from those efforts that have left him permanently disabled and suffering with PTSD, 100%. PHILLIP DOES NOT HAVE A CRIMINAL RECORD. There was a "Kick Out" order issued on 7-29-2021 on his ex-wife and her sister who already had Temporary DVRO's against them. However, on 8-3-2021 The San Diego County Superior Court FAMILY LAW DIVISION allowed the two women to move back into Phillip's home just five days after kicking them out despite his attorney's objections. This shows DIRECT PROOF that the SDCSC acted with BIAS and PREJUDICE against THIS VETERAN from then on EVER SINCE. The San Diego County Superior Court (SDCSC) continues to be prejudice and bias against all of Phillip's attempts to find a redress to end his unnecessarily high divorce conflict case. SDCSC made the VETERAN'S house the NUMBER ONE issue needing to be addressed in the divorce dissolution. For almost THREE YEARS, the SDCSC have fought against Phillip keeping his case, house and/or property FALSELY within their jurisdiction when it has clearly been proven by federal law, statue and official court transcripts that it is not. Phillip Simon has filed an action in the United States District Court, Southern District of California (USDC, SDC), against the Superior Court: Simon v. Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, Case No. 23-CV-00889 for Fraud Upon the Court. Evidence Phillip is seeking within the family law case has been denied to him per his public records request because of the current federal lawsuit pending, officially making the SDCSC an adversary against Phillip. The SDCSC (trial judges) refuses to acknowledge any awareness of the pending federal case and continues to exact revenge and punishment against Phillip while the federal case is still pending. An immediate injunction is needed because the SDCSC (Family Law Division) has ruled against a long standing federally protected statute and now rules Phillip's DISABILITIES are NOW considered COMMUNITY PROPERTY. The SDCSC is using this time to continue to violate Phillip's CIVIL RIGHTS in hopes to take his house away (leaving the veteran BANKRUPT AND HOMELESS) before the USDC, SDC responds to the pending FRAUD UPON the COURT CASE.To Reach Phillip Simon: phillipsimon56@gmail.comThis episode of Slam the Gavel is sponsored by CPSprotect Consulting Services.
