AI Art Director, amateur comedian, band-aid specialist, DEI hire, and street researcher Chris Waites returns to Heterodorx — now with 10% more white! After disclosing some shattering news from 23&Me, Chris shares his expertise on AI generated visual art (please follow along on his Instagram page). Is AI art actually art? Does it threaten human art jobs? What are the differences between models such as Midjourney and DALL-E? Are there hot redheaded men? Is AI a tool, or a medium? Why can't AI imitate Nina's style? Can redheads have souls? Who produces more crap: humans or AI? What's the best way to write an AI visual prompt? Can a Pokemon consent? From Tumblr fursona artists to Google Gemini, the time of scarce content is over and a new era of head-spinning disorientation has begun. Bleeeep! As that's exactly why we started our main show, The Ugly American Werewolf in London Rock Podcast, and why we joined Pantheon in 2022. As a musician himself, Christian has always been drawn to the power of a live rock show - the power of which is unrivaled in the artistic world. Christian grew up in LA, getting into punk rock and Kick Out The Jams by the MC5 was an anthem to him growing up and helped guide him in his life and career. After Christian had the chance to interview founding member Wayne Kramer on his show, The Rock N Roll Archeologist, he then had the opportunity to finally see his idol live in San Francisco. But what also made the opportunity so cool is that Kramer was touring in 2018 with an all-star band dubbed the MC50 to celebrate 50 years of the MC5. So Kim Thayill (Soundgarden), Billy Gould (Faith No More) and others toured with Wayne to honor their catalog. And the show was so live that Christian couldn't help but get caught up in the mosh pit and celebrate like a teenager. He shares his story of that night with us here. However, Christian is also the CEO of Pantheon Media and Pantheon is raising money to help grow the world's #1 music podcast company. Here's just some of the many things Tom and I touch on in this podcast:  Why Tom feels that the MC5 are the spiritual forebears to Rage Against The Machine; A moving glimpse into Tom and Wayne's friendship and the far-reaching work they did with Jail Guitar Doors; Plus, incendiary discussions about their early singles, Kick Out The Jams, Back In The USA, High Time, and their incredible new opus, Heavy Lifting! In this podcast episode, Mark interviews Daniel Wolff, a Grammy-nominated author, about his work in music history and his collaboration with Dave Marsh on the book "Kick Out The Jams." (Daniel was nominated for a Grammy for his liner notes for the box set of Sam Cooke's gospel recordings.)Mark and Daniel discuss the evolution of music criticism, the role of protest songs, and the importance of collaboration in the creative process.Wolff also offers advice for aspiring creators, emphasizing the need to not take oneself too seriously and to focus on getting the work out into the world.Specific topics include:- Daniel's work with Dave Marsh and their new book "Kick Out The Jams"- The organization and content of the book- The role of music in social issues and protest- The importance of collaboration in creativity- Advice for aspiring creators: don't take yourself too seriously and get your work out there1. "I think protest music is going all the time now. I mean, Kendrick Lamar, the hip hop artist, I think writes protest music and or pop music and or hip hop, however you want to define it. But it's music that says, wait a second, here's the world I'm living in. Isn't the way I want it. How do I talk about this?"2. "I think for me, the key to collaboration is to kind of give up authorship in a way and say, okay, well we'll change this because it doesn't work here, even though I think that's the best part of the writing. It's not working with you. And so we'll go on. I don't think it's much different from a marriage or a friendship. You're trying to figure out how to get along."3. "[Dave] always loved contemporary music. He still loves contemporary music. It's not like, oh, it never got any better than fill in the blank, whoever your favorite is. It was as you point out him going, well, okay, but we've got this ideal of what it ought to be, which was a communal ideal that we were all in it together and it was more democratic than it was capitalistic, if you will."The advice given by Daniel is to not take yourself too seriously and not get too caught up in the importance of hitting the send button or publishing your work. He emphasizes that there will always be more opportunities to create and that it's important to avoid self-importance. Collaboration is also encouraged as it can help to diminish feelings of self-importance and bring a fresh perspective to your work. Overall, the advice is to have fun with your creativity and not put too much pressure on yourself.Co-editor of Kick Out the Jams, a selection of essays by Dave Marsh that cover 35 years of music writing. Worked with Dave on Rock & Rap Confidential, co-wrote with him, and appeared on his various Sirius radio shows. Grammy-nominated author Daniel Wolff has published six books of award-winning non-fiction, from You Send Me, a biography of singer Sam Cooke, to How To Become an American: A History if Immigration, Assimilation, and Loneliness. He worked with Dave Marsh on Rock & Rap Confidential, has published four volumes of poetry, produced a number of documentary films, and written collaboratively with musicians, choreographers, sculptors, and scientists. @dwolff6 on Instagram Copyright 2023 Mark Stinson

This month we're tackling an album I've been aware of for a long time, never listened to, but the time has come. Kick Out the Jams by MC5 was released in February 1969 and has been classified as proto-punk. While the band formed in 1963, it took a few years for their debut album to come into form, and uniquely, it was recorded live over two nights at Detroit's Grande Ballroom in 1968. Typically bands release a live album well into their career but MC5 uniquely opted to do so out of the gates. It was not terribly well received upon release, with critic Lester Bangs, writing his first review for Rolling Stone, calling Kick Out the Jams a "ridiculous, overbearing, pretentious album". But as time often does, as the years passed, it has become one of the most positively cited live albums, as well as noted for laying the tracks for the true punk explosion that was to come. Over the last few months I keep hearing Kick Out the Jams and MC5 being mentioned in articles and podcasts, so the time has finally come to embark down the MC5 road. So, buckle up, pour a drink, have a puff, turn it up to 11, and let's see where this takes us…

In this episode, we put a Stranglehold on Detroit Rock City as it's time to Kick Out The Jams on this Elephant of a show with tons of Raw Power that emanated from Detroit in 2014. A 32-song set with an excellent crowd that took place in the middle of their Heartland Tour during the Lightning Bolt era, this show was dominated by Motor City Easter eggs, local sports legends and some things you've never witnessed before. Big thanks to long-time Horizon Leg Patron, Fred Blood, for requesting this as he'll get to tell his story in the episode. Though it was the show that preceded the wildly popular Moline No Code performance, people still talk about this one eight years later. There's no shadow hanging over it, and it's because it was an excellent mix of fan favorites, rarities and tons of memorable speeches. It was the sixth all-time performance of Black Red Yellow, the first instance where Release and Oceans opened up a show back-to-back and includes a highly emotional version of Light Years dedicated to Ikey Owens from Jack White's band who had recently passed away. Listen in if you want to find out what happens when you challenge Chris Chelios to a fight, and discover the reason as to why Get Right hasn't been played in nearly 20 years. Radio Free Flint Podcast: Wayne Kramer of MC5 Wayne Kramer is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer, and film and television composer. He was co-founder of the Detroit rock group MC5, and Rolling Stone named him one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. Wayne was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. The MC5 recorded and performed the song "Kick Out the Jams" which became an anthem for the protest movement of the 1960's. Along with that, came a passion for rock and roll, social and economic justice. The MC5 emerged as an iconic American rock band that was in the vanguard of the social and cultural revolution of the 1960's. The lyrics to "Kick Out the Jams" were controversial and required the band to shape the song for the audience or face arrest or being banned from the airwaves. Wayne Kramer's band performed at a counter-protest at the 1968 Democratic Party Convention. The police moved in and assaulted many in the crowd when the performance was over. The actions by the Chicago Police Department have been called a police "riot" by historians and those charged with reviewing the police misconduct. The MC5 performed at Sherwood Forest in Davison, Michigan. The bands' performance there was halted by the Davison Township Police. They didn't like the lyrics to the song Kick Out The Jams! There is more connection to Davison, the MC5 was managed by Davison native, John Sinclair. Sinclair was a radical (for the times) leftist who organized the White Panther Party to complement the Black Panther Party of the late 1960's and 70's. That activity earned Sinclair and band members of the MC5 the scrutiny of the FBI and the US Justice Department. Jailed for possession of marijuana, Sinclair, became an international cause celeb for those who thought his punishment was too harsh for mere possession of pot and for those who sought to legalize the weed. After the demise of his band, the MC5, Wayne Kramer fell into alcoholism and drug abuse. Eventually he was prosecuted for a drug offense and sentenced to a federal prison. After his release Kramer returned to his work as a musician. Eventually Wayne found a substance-free lifestyle. Wayne heads the American chapter of Jail Door Guitars, "an independent initiative which he founded that aims to provide instruments to those who are using music as a means of achieving the rehabilitation of prison inmates. Wayne Kramer has written a memoir, The Hard Stuff: Dope, Crime, the Mc5, and My Life of Impossibilities. With Josh still away on summer vacation, Jon and Matt take a trip of their own to the Motor City for the second episode in the Cleaning the Attic bonus series. This time, we feature the Supremes and the MC5, two artists from Detroit who released great albums in the 1960's but whose sounds couldn't be more different. Matt leads off with The Supremes' hugely successful hit-making 1964 Motown record “Where Did Our Love Go”, while Jon digs into MC5's 1969 release “Kick Out The Jams”, a record that had a huge impact on the world of punk and garage rock. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/combingthestacks/message

When you're looking at revolution-focused rock of the late 60's, you have to put MC5 near the top of the pantheon. Their debut album, Kick Out the Jams, was also a live album, and captures the rage and the energy that would inspire the garage band and punk movement in the years to come. MC5 stands for "the Motor City Five," and was frontman Rob Tyner, lead guitarist Wayne Kramer, rhythm guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith, bassist Michael Davis, and Dennis Thompson on drums. This is a raw "punch in the gut" album, underground, very rebellious. MC5 was politically active, and was one of the bands playing for the protesters at the 1968 Democratic Convention. The band would be broken up by 1972, but not before creating a legacy that would inspire bands for decades to come.Get ready for some loud, angry rock and roll! Rocket Reducer #62 (Rama Lama Fa Fa Fa)The song is the last track on the first side of the album, and with lyrics like "you can lay it down on me, momma any old time. We can shimmy so good, We'll both be stoned o-mind," it is pretty easy to see the sex and drugs in this rock and roll.Come TogetherThis track has a sound similar to The Who, and was a call to arms for the anti-capitalist left. Between the drug references and the explicit lyrics, MC5 would find their albums banned from many of the record stores at the time.Ramblin RoseThis is a cover song originally recorded in 1962 by Jerry Lee Lewis, and by Ted Tyler in 1965. It was originally a country rock song, but Tyner puts a falsetto twist on it. This is the first track on the album.Kick Out the JamsThe title track of the album would be the signature song of MC5, and would be covered by numerous people through the years. You're not going to find ballads from this group, and this song is a call to get rid of the easy listening stuff and get loud!  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Tra La La” by The Banana SplitsThe Banana Splits was a Saturday morning TV show in the late 60's. It featured costumed characters and a variety of short kids shows in serialized format. STAFF PICKS:“If I Can Dream” by Elvis PresleyBruce picks The King this week. This song was recorded in June 1968, two months after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, and contains direct quotations from MLK. It was first released as the finale to Presley's 1968 comeback special, and was on the charts in February 1969.“For Once In My Life” by Stevie WonderBrian's staff pick was originally written in 1966, and recorded by a number of people including Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Earlier versions of this song were done as a ballad before Stevie Wonder picked up the tempo.“Son of a Preacher Man” by Dusty SpringfiledRob's features the Memphis sound of this British native. It was originally intended to be sung by Aretha Franklin but Dusty Springfield does it justice. This was her last top 10 hit, but Springfield was also on a hit from 1987 - “What Have I Done to Deserve This” by the Pet Shop Boys.“Anything You Choose” by Spanky and Our GangWayne's staff pick is a deeper cut from Elaine “Spanky” McFarlane and her band. McFarlane got her nickname from the similarity of her last name to George McFarland, who played Spanky in "The Little Rascals" serial in the 30's. This song has an Elvis feel and a great horn section. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:"Hang 'Em High" by Booker T and The MG'sWe finish up with this instrumental covering the theme from Clint Eastwood's western film of the same name. This keyboard-heavy rendition entered the charts this month.

When you start a conversation with a Pearl Jam fanatic asking them what the best show of all time is, there are a few answers that immediately come to mind. Pinkpop 92, Soldier Field, Randall's Island are all shows that people speak of with the fondest of memories, but today we're covering a show that hangs among the pantheon of the best shows ever. MSG Night 2 2010 was an instant classic with too many incredible moments to count. Randy and Buckley host the show this week and both of them were there that night. The recap and love for this show tells the story. Coming from two different perspectives, this was the first show Buckley attended with very little knowledge of the band prior. He'll talk about how the crowd and the passion from the stage that night turned him into a lifetime fan. Right from the bat with Corduroy, you could tell that something special was in the air. The set list is an array of rarities mixed with strong versions of the big hits. For anyone that's listened to this podcast before and enjoys the song bytes added in, there will be no lack of clips on this episode! From Evolution to Nothingman, Push Me Pull Me and the W.M.A. Tag on Daughter to all of the juicy encore moments such as Lukin II, Black Red Yellow, Sweet Lew, Better Man, Hunger Strike and Kick Out The Jams. By many people’s estimation, including Adam Yauch, Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye and John Joseph, Bad Brains are the most important Hardcore band of all-time.  From early on they had incorporated elements of Jazz, Funk and of course Reggae into their music but it wasn’t until their third album, 1986’s I Against I that they began adding melody, complex song structures and hard rock/metal influences to the mix, all of which would become key elements in their remaining output.  We have very fond memories of this one and are joined by our pals Glenn Polanco and Patrick Sweeney to discuss the lasting legacy it’s had on our lives.    Recommended Listening   Bad Brains w/ Henry Rollins Kick Out the Jams https://www.discogs.com/composition/ba7da99b-94d1-47d1-8bf5-f45664ef8dc3-Kick-Out-The-Jams   Fireburn Don’t Stop the Youth https://open.spotify.com/album/6RQtodMFW85bcXCchhvSqc?si=TsYGXbT2SrO-UaVojGJzEg   Massive Attack w/ Mos Def I Against I  https://open.spotify.com/track/07L2b1rNFcywc0coZYUzeV?si=nM2B9vHJRq-AmdBl4XsHjw     Movie   Bad Brains: A Band in DC https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2243163/     huntsmanhill.com #huntsmanhill Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg

For this show, Leonard is joined in the studio by a bona fide rock icon, lead guitarist and founding member of the MC5, Wayne Kramer. From his genre-defining wall of feedback on the band’s seminal work “Kick Out The Jams” to their infamous performance at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago that landed them both in jail and on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine before they even had a record deal, few groups had as wild or influential a time in the spotlight. The “big brother” band of The Stooges in their earliest days, the pioneers, purveyors and arguably creators of punk and heavy metal music, the MC5 created a sound far ahead of its time. And at the heart of that sound was Wayne Kramer’s guitar. “The MC5’s story is important because it’s five guys from Detroit who, against all prevailing wisdom, at a time when the music business really didn’t want to know, tried to make something happen,” Wayne said in a 2011 lecture at Loyola University. “I think there’s something to be said for that. Unequivocal commitment to trying to achieve—the sense of possibility.”

It’s another Bank Holiday Monday so that means it’s time to check back into the Nordic Game Jam and see how things progressed since our last episode. The main issue is that 24 hours had passed since our last Game Jam episode so (in theory) people should have slept. We tried our best to find out the best and worst places to sleep at a Game Jam and also tried to see if snoring had affected any games created. Luckily we managed to find lots of people who were on our previous episode so we got to see how their ideas (and teams) had changed and also got to speak to someone from the most exotic country attending. We also came up with an idea for a Game Jam that we thought of two weeks ago, but was two weeks after this episode was recorded. On both times we appear to think it’s a new idea that we’ve had. This is what Game Jams can do to you. Look in our links section below to see all the games that were created from the Jam. They’re all excellent. Cheerio! It would seem that I couldn’t rest until we’d covered the other of the mighty triumvirate of proto-punk bands (see also: Iggy and the Stooges, The New York Dolls), and thus unearthed this 1969 classic-to-many. I won’t get into it too much here, but all I can say at this point is…balls. Balls for having your debut album recorded live. Not “in the studio” live first-takes, but a genuine live performance (although, if memory serves, it was a mesh of two nights). But also, balls all the way through, as these dudes were clearly of the take-no-prisoners and also fuck-you-The-Man! You can’t tell me what to do! Detroit clearly had some shit going down back in the day.
