The Cork footballers saved their season with a gritty performance in Portlaoise to beat Roscommon over the weekend but their reward is a very tough preliminary quarter-final against Dublin. While Meath and Armagh have beaten the Boys in Blue already this summer, John Cleary's charges will need to produce a season-best to progress to the last eight. We reflect on the victory over the Rossies which was spearheaded by Colm O'Callaghan, Ian Maguire, Mark Cronin and Seán McDonnell, who kicked 0-4 in a tight game. Keeper Micheál Aodh Martin came up with some big plays as well, saving a goal chance at a critical stage and pushing out a dangerous dropping ball for a 45 in the dying minutes. It was heart-stopping stuff, with Roscommon hunting a two-pointer to knock Cork out as time elapsed as Brian O'Driscoll, Seán Brady and Daniel O'Mahony defended brilliantly. What can they improve on for their Croke Park trip though?Plus we reflect on a disappointing All-Ireland minor hurling semi-final exit for Cork against Clare.Fergal McCormack's side had beaten the Banner en route to a Munster title but a four-week break since that provincial success might have been an issue with Clare far sharper throughout. More tellingly, the underdogs showed greater hunger and work-rate around the middle third.Cork were expected to reach what would only have been the county's third All-Ireland final appearance at the grade in the modern era, with the Rebels winning the title in 2021 and losing the 2017 decider to Galway.Still, there were some excellent performers in red over the course of their six matches and we pick out the young players to watch out for in the coming seasons.Plus there's a look at the local action as the club hurling leagues head towards their conclusion. Now in its third season, every week Éamonn Murphy will be joined by The Echo team including Barry O'Mahony, Denis Hurley, Rory Noonan, John Horgan and more to discuss all the latest Cork GAA news on and off the field. You can listen to the Echo Sport Podcast every week wherever you get your podcasts or on www.echolive.ie/podcast Hosted on Acast. No one gave them much of a chance beforehand but Cork defied the odds and completed a stunning turnaround from a 16-point beating 20 days earlier to land the Munster title. The majority of Rebels were travelling to Shannonside more in hope than expectation but Pat Ryan had promised his side would make it worth their while with a battling performance and that carried them all the way to a first provincial crown since 2018. We look back on the game itself and the memorable occasion at TUS Gaelic Grounds where both sets of supporters and a ferocious contest led to an electric atmosphere. It was a rollercoaster of emotion across the near 100-minute war before penalties decided it. Limerick had no shortage of regrets, which sums up what an incredible team they've been, going for seven in a row and still leaving everything on the field. Cork hurled outstandingly well in normal time where their sloppy shooting meant it finished level. Then Limerick missed more chances before a Darragh Fitzgibbon deep into added time forced a shootout. We break down the key areas where Cork turned the tide from their humiliating loss in the group game. Subs made a critical impact, with Conor Lehane and Shane Kingston deservedly taking all the plaudits. Limerick haven't gone away of course. They'll be raging favourites to bounce back and beat Dublin or Kildare, and then Kilkenny, to reach the All-Ireland final. Cork have to look after their own house with a month-gap before their semi-final in Croke, most likely against a Tipperary side who feel they owe their rivals. For now, we can enjoy the beautiful feeling of being Munster champs. We also preview Cork's knockout football clash with Roscommon, a 50-50 match where John Cleary's side will be hoping to bring the form they showed against Kerry, rather than in a loss to Meath. Plus a round-up of the club football action and the minors' All-Ireland semi-final exit at the hands of Tyrone. Now in its third season, every week Éamonn Murphy will be joined by The Echo team including Barry O'Mahony, Denis Hurley, Rory Noonan, John Horgan and more to discuss all the latest Cork GAA news on and off the field. It's back to the scene of the crime on Saturday, when the Cork hurlers must face Limerick in their first Munster final since 2018.Pat Ryan's side were torn apart in the meeting last month when sweet revenge was exacted for last summer to the tune of 16 points. Cork will hardly be as bad again while Limerick were so tuned in across the first half they fired 2-18 from their 25 first-half shots. We discuss where Cork can improve as they bid to end the Treaty's provincial dominance, raging favourites for a seventh title in succession. Will the restoration of Darragh Fitzgibbon to midfield and Shane Barrett to centre-forward make a difference? Or could they shake it up by using Seamus Harnedy or Tim O'Mahony on Kyle Hayes? Can Ciarán Joyce fare better on Cian Lynch than he did three weeks ago? Or would a fully-fit Rob Downey be given the job? What match-ups will go for across the full-back line? Seán O'Donoghue is surely needed for Aaron Gillane.Injuries will be a major factor too. And Cork are really struggling with a busy casualty ward.Limerick had the luxury of resting their marquee men in the last group game. They outmuscled and outsmarted Cork in the last game and it's going to take absolutely everything going right for Downey to pick up the Mick Mackey Cup.The footballers came up short again in their latest clash with Kerry, the 13th defeat in a row across minor, U20 and senior for the Rebels at the hands of their old foe.John Cleary's side performed very well in the first half but were undone by their missed goal chances and not helped by some awfully fussy refereeing around the kick-out mark. Those calls gifted Kerry six points straight after half-time.All is not lost, Cork can beat Roscommon and finish third in the group and reach a preliminary quarter-final. We also reflect on the controversial situation when Castlehaven were able to utilise Cork players Rory Maguire and Conor Cahalane in a league game six days before the Kerry match. The Cork hurlers suffered one of their worst defeats of the modern era at the hands of Limerick on Sunday.Their display at TUS Gaelic Grounds was miles off the required level in the Munster Championship, especially when John Kiely's side were always going to be wired to the moon against the team that ended their five-in-a-row bid. There were very few positives, if any, given Cork lost by a staggering 16 points, coughing up three goals and being outclassed in every line of the field. Now, they can still make the Munster final if they get the better of Waterford at home next Sunday, which you'd have taken at the outset of the campaign. The manner of the loss though leaves them in a very vulnerable position for the visit of the Déise and going forward...Declan Dalton, Rob Downey and Niall O'Leary are injury doubts and we reveal who we would bring into the starting 15 to replace them. Were Cork complacent after landing the league and blitzing Tipp? Did the three-week break have an impact? Or was it just a bad day they can recover from? We certainly hope so.The Cork footballers head to Navan on Saturday afternoon in the opening All-Ireland football series group game. Meath were devastated to be beaten by Louth in the Leinster final, especially when they'd take down Dublin, and will have no fear of the Rebels. They've Kerry at home the following weekend and then face Roscommon in a neutral venue, so getting a victory against Meath is hugely important. On the camogie front, the vote on skorts or skirts takes place this Thursday, while divisional teams have been given a reprieve to feature in the Cork senior camogie championship again this season. We also look ahead to the Cork-Kerry minor final in football and reflect on the minor hurlers' provincial success. KINTO Join survey reveals 45% of Irish commuters stressed by their daily journey with many wishing they didn't have to drive

Irish Tech News Audio Articles

KINTO Join - a provider of sustainable mobility applications has revealed the findings of its survey which found that 45% of commuters in Ireland find their journey to work or university stressful. The research - conducted by Censuswide and involving 1,000 people who commute to work or university in the Republic of Ireland - found that more than half (51%) have considered changing their commute method. However, 48% have never tried a different mode of transport for their commute. Traffic delays and congestion were cited by 44% of commuters as one of their biggest frustrations. The other leading frustrations were fuel costs (30%), the time lost having to commute (30%), the weather (29%), and delays with services (15%). Driving by car is the most popular primary mode of transport (51%) among commuters. However, only 16% prefer to travel this way. If available, the bus was the most preferred means of commuting (25%), followed by the train (24%) and walking (23%). One in ten (10%) respondents said they would prefer a company or university shuttle. In urban areas, driving by car and getting the bus were tied for the top spot as the most popular primary mode of transport (at 32% respectively). In terms of generations, almost twice as many Generation X commuters drive by car (63%) than Generation Z commuters (32%). Of those who commute by car, 91% always or mostly do so alone. Their top reasons for travelling to work or university by car are that it is more time-efficient (48%), it is the only option (43%), and inadequate public transport accessibility (34%). The study found that the average daily commute time is around 1 hour and 10 minutes, whilst the average daily cost is €10. Train commuters have the most expensive journey to work or university (€13.14). At the other end of the scale, (excluding walkers) eBike commuters have the least expensive commute (€4.71). As for the average distance of a one-way commute, this is just shy of 17km, with those in Roscommon (30.56km), Wicklow (24.97km), and Westmeath (23.76km) travelling furthest. Meanwhile, respondents in Longford (6.13km), Waterford (9.58km), and Donegal (11km) have the shortest distances to travel. Patrizia Niehaus, CEO, KINTO Join Ltd, said: "It's ironic that while so many commuters in Ireland drive alone out of necessity, a significant number would actually prefer not to. They're frustrated - by traffic, rising fuel costs, and the stress of it all - but don't feel they have another choice. Of course, large-scale infrastructure upgrades are vital, but they take time. In the meantime, the congestion worsens, and emissions reduction targets slip further out of reach. That's why action at the micro-level is so critical. "A large share of short-distance travel happens for work and education. Employers and institutions are uniquely positioned to support more sustainable commuting through initiatives like shared transport schemes, carpooling platforms, or incentives for walking and cycling. Tariff Tensions vs Talent Demand: Irish Job Growth Up in Q1

Hiring activity across key sectors in Ireland showed resilience in Q1 2025, with job postings at Matrix Recruitment rising 15.3% year-on-year, despite economic uncertainty. According to the latest Workforce Trends Report from Matrix Recruitment, employers demonstrated a cautious but steady approach to hiring in the first quarter of 2025, particularly in sectors with ongoing talent shortages, such as Manufacturing, Engineering, and Financial Services. "While economic uncertainty remains a concern, we are seeing strong demand for skilled professionals across multiple industries," said Breda Dooley, Head of Recruitment at Matrix Recruitment. "Manufacturing remains a key generator of jobs in Ireland, and we are seeing increased investment in ESG roles. The market is evolving, and job seekers with in-demand skills will continue to be at an advantage." Sector-Specific Trends The latest data from AIB's manufacturing PMI reported a modest upturn in manufacturing performance in the first quarter of the year on the back of increased production and new contracts. This was reflected in hiring trends with manufacturing accounting for over 25% of live job listings at Matrix Recruitment in Q1 2025. The number of manufacturing roles grew by 29% in Q1 2025 compared to the same time last year with Matrix Recruitment reporting that employers are actively recruiting for a wider range of technical and supervisory positions, with job titles like Production Manager, Maintenance Technician, Mechanical Design Engineer, and Production Team Leader driving the surge. Roles related to environment, sustainability, and green strategy rose YOY (5%), signalling that more employers in Ireland are recognising the importance of ESG as part of their overall business strategy and investing accordingly. Permanent vs. Temporary Roles Demand for permanent positions rose by 10.5% in Q1 2025, accounting for over 65% of all job listings at Matrix Recruitment. Meanwhile, temporary hiring surged by 16.7%, indicating a shift toward workforce flexibility.Speaking about this uptick in temp and contract roles, Breda Dooley said: "The growth in short-term project and cover roles is clearly a reflection of the economic uncertainty we are feeling at the minute. Many businesses are focused on staying agile and prioritising their short-term operational needs over future growth." Regional Hiring Hotspots The services sector saw a surge in hiring, particularly for administrative and clerical roles, with job postings increasing by 28.6% in counties such as Westmeath and Kildare. Waterford witnessed a notable rise in engineering and manufacturing roles, aligning with ongoing industry investment in the Southeast. Manufacturing jobs were also particularly strong in Roscommon, Cavan, and Westmeath. Trump Tariffs v Job Creation As Ireland continues to navigate the complexities of the global economic landscape, several key factors will influence hiring trends for the remainder of the year. Among these, global trade tensions remain a central concern. The Irish Government has warned that up to 80,000 future jobs could be at risk if the US proceeds with additional tariffs on the EU. Although the tariffs have now been confirmed, they are currently subject to a 90-day pause, providing a window for negotiation and potential resolution. This period of uncertainty means that while certain sectors, including automotive, machinery, electronics, minerals, and agriculture, may be more vulnerable to disruption, the full extent of the impact remains to be seen. Matrix Recruitment has noted a potential for sharper-than-expected slowdown in job growth, following the US administration's April 2nd announcement. However, with EU leaders hoping to engaging in dialogue with the US, there remains cautious optimism that an agreement could mitigate the worst-case scenarios. Focusing on SMEs, Breda warns: "Already under pressure from recent increases in sick pay and the minimum wage, SMEs are facing mounting ch...

Last week, a Brazilian man who rented out properties across rural Ireland under false pretences and used them as brothels, was jailed for nine years.Ilamar Rodrigues Ribeiro, who pleaded guilty to brothel keeping, possession of child pornography, and money laundering, was linked to rental properties in counties Longford, Kildare, Cavan, Wexford, Roscommon, Leitrim and Carlow. The case highlighted how the sex industry continues to thrive throughout Ireland, while also shining a light on the State's 2017 legislation which made the purchase of sex illegal, but not the sale. The legislation was designed to shift the legal burden towards those who buy sex rather than the sellers, aiming to protect those most at risk within the sex industry. But has this worked?A long-awaited review of the legislation, which was finally published last week, acknowledged that the demand for sexual services has not decreased in recent years. Why is enforcing this legislation so difficult and do those within the sex industry feel more protected by this law?Irish Times reporter Órla Ryan discuses the review of Ireland's contentious sex-work legislation. A few days after a massive ice storm rocked northern lower Michigan, many thousands remain without power while crews from power companies, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and other state and local agencies continue the cleanup and rebuilding process.Bill Wahl, MDOT North Region associate engineer for operations, who is coordinating department efforts, joins the podcast to provide an update on the recovery. Also joining is James Lake, MDOT North Region media relations specialist, who assists the Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) with communications. He talks about why falling ice necessitated closing the bridge three times in three days, including a record 30-hour period.Wahl and Lake grew up in the region and neither has seen anything like this ice storm and the resulting destruction. Wahl recounts utility workers who had been on power-restoration projects following hurricanes in the Southeast saying the scenes are as bad or worse as anything they've seen.Wahl says crews from several counties to the south, including Kent, Ottawa, Mason, Missaukee, Muskegon, Roscommon, Iosco and Wexford, were helping to clear roads. While the Mackinac Bridge re-opened Thursday morning, April 3, after a 30-hour closure, officials will continue to closely monitor conditions for falling ice. The MBA posted a video message on X from Bridge Director Kim Nowack about the falling ice, along with some photos from the bridge. More videos of falling ice that prompted the current closure were also posted on X. The bridge has closed roughly 30 times in the past 30 years, and the average closure duration is several hours. More frequently asked questions about falling ice and other topics are available on the MBA website.

EPISODE 693: Behind the Mitten Road Trip -- Clare to LewistonIn this episode of "Behind the Mitten," hosts John Gonzalez and Amy Sherman celebrate a decade of exploring Michigan's hidden gems. They embark on a road trip adventure, visiting various local businesses, including Buccilli's Pizza in Clare, R & J's Best Choice Marketplace in Houghton Lake, and Jack's Place in Roscommon, where they highlight the importance of community and local flavors. The episode also features the Lewiston Hotel & Bar, showcasing its award-winning fish fry and new menu items, emphasizing the unique experiences Michigan has to offer.Segment 1: Co-owner Shari Buccilli of Buccilli's Pizza in Clare tells the story how her husband's family moved from Detroit and started the award-winning pizzeria in 1973 with only $1,500. Segment 2: Our next stop is at R&J's Best Choice Marketplace of Houghton Lake where we meet Joycelyn Alexander, who tells us more about this "Pure Michigan" destination that features products from all over the state, including a variety of their top-selling Feta cheese. Amy calls herself "a Feta girl" and wants to enter the annual contest in December to win a year's worth of Feta. Last year they sold 14,730 pounds of the cheese.Segment 3: A few years ago we traveled all over the state looking for great fish frys. We found one at Jack's Place in Roscommon, known for fresh Alaskan cod and a cool A-frame bar. The fish is never frozen and flown in every week. We stopped in again, only to discover that Amy happen to know new co-owner Jason Christensen, who is originally from Amy's hometown in downriver Detroit. We learned more about how Jason and his partner Ashley Reynolds came to own the bar. And of course, we had to try the fish again. It was fabulous. Segment 4: Another one of our favorite fish frys was at the Lewiston Hotel & Bar, and it, too has new ownership. It was our final stop for the show. We sat at the bar and talked to Troy Willett, who tells us how he and his wife, Crissy, bought the bar a few years ago and updated it with a new menu, including gyros, poutine, more Mexican food items and the "Lewie Burger," a half-pound cheese burger that has become a top-seller. But the perch fish fry still brings them in because it's still the same, Troy said. They also offer 12 modest, very clean hotel rooms, making it a great place to spend the night. Prices are very afforable. That completes our Clare to Lewiston road trip!Chapters00:00 - Celebrating a Decade of Michigan Adventures01:14 - Road Trip Excitement: The Journey Begins02:38 - Exploring Clare: St. Patrick's Day Festivities04:01 - Buccilli's Pizza (Clare): A Local Favorite10:30 - Michigan Maple Festival: Sweet Traditions12:51 - R & J's Best Choice Market (Houghton Lake): Michigan Goods Galore20:57 - Jack's Place (Roscommon): Fresh Fish and Community Vibes35:41 - The Lewiston Hotel (Lewiston): A New Chapter in HospitalityLearn more about Behind the Mitten at amyandgonzo.com.

Procure.ie analysed thousands of LinkedIn profiles across Ireland, to determine which counties are leading the way for high-ranking women in business. Cork ranks first with 360 female entrepreneurs and offers great support, including the Exxcel programme, which helps women start and grow their businesses. With a population of 584,156, the city has 62 female entrepreneurs per 100,000 people and is home to successful companies like The Good Dairy Company. Best counties in Ireland for female entrepreneurs Dublin follows in second place with 303 female founders and a larger population of 1,458,154, making it the country's business hub. While it has a lower concentration of female entrepreneurs per capita (21 per 100,000 people), it remains an attractive location due to its well-established ecosystem, featuring coworking spaces, networking events, and investor access, and is home to well-known brands like Sculpted by Aimee and Atlantic Bridge. Galway ranks third with 161 female founders and a population of 277,737. It has a much higher concentration of female entrepreneurs, with 58 per 100,000 people. The city offers strong community programs like The Women in Business Network, creating a supportive environment where women can bring their dreams to life. Wicklow and Kildare round out the top five counties with the most female entrepreneurs, with the top 10 counties mapped out below. Counties with the fewest female entrepreneurs: The counties with the fewest female entrepreneurs are Carlow, Cavan, Roscommon, Longford, and Leitrim. Carlow has 23 female founders and a population of 61,968, giving it a rate of 37 female entrepreneurs per 100,000 people. The highest among the lowest-ranked counties. Cavan and Roscommon both have 21 female entrepreneurs per 100,000 people, with 17 and 15 female founders, respectively. Longford, with 12 female founders, has a slightly higher rate at 26 per 100,000 people. Leitrim ranks the lowest, with just 6 female founders and 17 per 100,000 people. More and more women are starting businesses across Ireland, with some counties leading the way. While there are still areas that need improvement, the data shows that Ireland has made great progress in helping more female entrepreneurs bring their ideas to life.
