We do SO much inside Vestibular Group Fit! So much that I'm not even sure how to talk about it half the time. For example… we have a book club! We recently read The Way Out.  It's a book by Alan Gordon about chronic pain, which parallels a lot of useful concepts to look at chronic dizziness.  So many members in VGF love this book and when they first read it go “WOW I feel seen!” So… let's talk about it. In this episode, we'll dig into: Why The Way Out is a book that's relevant to dizziness How the body interprets pain What the pain reprocessing theory is How the pain-fear-pain cycle keeps you stuck How the concept of miswiring for chronic pain is similar to chronic dizziness The differences between chronic pain and chronic dizziness What to remember about mindset as new pathways develop This is a great book that explains a nuanced topic very well in easy-to-read language, and has many parallels to dizziness that makes this a great resource for anyone with a vestibular disorder! I get a ton of people wondering if they'll be able to travel or drive or [insert your activity here] again. The answer is always and consistently: YES. The thing you have to note is that it will take time, consistency, and the right tools. VGF member, Diana, was able to take an 8-day trip out-of-the-country!  Grab the tools she and hundreds of other members have used to get back to the things they so desperately wanted to. → JOIN VESTIBULAR GROUP FIT! Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well

We've been taught that pain always means something is broken, but it's often just a "stuck" danger signal in the brain. To show us how to turn that signal off, Jill Stoddard talks with Alan Gordon, the founder of the Pain Psychology Center and author of The Way Out. Drawing on his own recovery from chronic pain, Alan explains how fear and conditioning keep us hurting even after we've healed.Through fascinating stories like the "construction worker" case and MRI surprise, they dive into the science of neuroplastic pain and the tools you can use to retrain your nervous system, build stress tolerance, and finally feel safe in your own body again.Listen and Learn:Alan's personal frustration with navigating a broken medical system and how that led to the discovery of a groundbreaking mind-body approach that offers lasting relief for chronic painHow your brain can misinterpret emotional stress or past memories as physical danger to create real, persistent pain even after an injury has fully healed The specific clues that can reveal whether your chronic physical pain is actually coming from your brain, and how to break the cycle of fear that keeps symptoms alive The reason why traditional recovery methods can fail when we ignore our internal state, and how "backward engineering" your physical tension can signal to your brain that the danger has passed Why the clinical evolution of Pain Reprocessing Therapy shifted from exploring unconscious emotions to targeting the brain's internal danger signals, and how modern neuroscience identifies the hidden driver keeping your physical symptoms alive Why somatic tracking outperforms traditional mindfulness Resources:The Way Out: A Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven Approach to Healing Chronic Pain https://bookshop.org/a/30734/9780593086858 Pain Psychology Center Website: https://painpsychologycenter.com/Follow the Pain Psychology Center on Social Media: https://instagram.com/thepainpsychologycenterhttps://www.facebook.com/painpsychologycenterTell Me About Your Pain - Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tell-me-about-your-pain/id1503847664 The Pain Reprocessing Therapy Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pain-reprocessing-therapy-podcast/id1785564399 TEDxAdelaide - Lorimer Moseley - Why Things Hurt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwd-wLdIHjsAbout Alan GordonAlan Gordon is the creator of Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) and founder of the Pain Psychology Center. The global refugee regime has shifted under our feet. Over the last forty years, international asylum practices have expanded to include the queer and trans displaced. At least thirty-seven countries now recognize LGBTIQ refugees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, with some states providing specialized support. Yet amid this expansion, backlash has intensified against refugee protection as well as the hard-earned rights of LGBTIQ people. In this disquieting context, the protection of LGBTIQ refugees remains partial and exclusionary. The Way Out: Justice in the Queer Search for Refuge (University of California Press, 2026) examines the complexities of queer and trans displacement around the world. Pain Reprocessing Therapy does not replace medical care. Chronic pain and back pain aren't just problems of the body — they're problems of a nervous system stuck in protection mode. In this episode, I'll guide you through a somatic tracking exercise, a core skill from Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), designed to help calm neuroplastic pain by teaching your brain that your body is safe. Somatic tracking is not about ignoring pain, pushing through it, or forcing relaxation. Instead, you'll practice noticing pain with curiosity, neutrality, and safety, which helps interrupt the fear–pain cycle that keeps chronic pain going. Looking for affordable online counseling? The Israeli/American War against Iran continues. On today's panel we wrestle with the question of the war’s legality. In doing so, we reject US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s assertion that the US will fight this war with “no stupid rules of engagement,,” and his assertion that there will be “no politically correct wars,” and “no nation-building quagmire.” While he dismisses the importance of international laws on war, we do not. Alan Gordon is the author of the Way Out, he developed and tested Pain Reprocessing Therapy as an evidence based treatment for Chronic Pain Learn the skills to Regulate your Emotions, join the membership: https://courses.therapyinanutshell.com/membership In this engaging conversation, Alan and I delve into the concept of neuroplastic pain, exploring how the brain can misinterpret safe signals from the body as dangerous, leading to chronic pain. One speaker shares their personal journey with chronic pain, highlighting the confusion and frustration that arises from conflicting medical opinions and the realization that many people with structural issues do not experience pain. We talk about pain as a real experience, regardless of its origin, and discuss the importance of understanding the brain's role in pain perception. The conversation also touches on the psychological aspects of pain, including how stress and anxiety can amplify pain sensations, and the significance of addressing these mental factors in pain management. Devon O'Neil — On Nature's Power and the Price of Adventure

Devon O'Neil is a journalist, author, and longtime friend of mine whose new book "The Way Out: A True Story of Survival in the Heart of the Rockies" is one of the best pieces of outdoor nonfiction I've read in years. The book tells the harrowing true story of a backcountry ski trip near Leadville, Colorado, that turned tragic—and the years-long process of understanding what really happened, and how a mountain town wrestled with loss, resilience, and the complicated relationship we all have with risk and wild places. It's gripping, deeply reported, and beautifully written—equal parts survival epic, community portrait, and meditation on how we find meaning in the aftermath of tragedy. Devon has spent more than two decades as a writer and reporter based in Summit County, Colorado, covering everything from adventure sports and avalanches to the cultural and emotional undercurrents of life in mountain towns. Before turning his attention to this book project, he worked in newspapers, wrote for Outside, Men's Journal, and ESPN.com, and somehow managed to balance all of that with being a hardcore athlete and a dedicated dad and husband. He's one of those rare writers whose empathy and endurance match the people that he writes about. In this conversation, Devon and I dig into the story behind "The Way Out"—how he first heard about the tragedy, earned the trust of a close-knit community, and spent years piecing together a complete and compassionate account. We talk about the ethical tightrope of telling other people's hardest stories, how his own brushes with danger shaped his perspective on risk, and what this project taught him about the fine line between adventure and recklessness. We also get into his childhood growing up on a sailboat in the Virgin Islands, his evolution as a journalist and athlete, and the hard-earned wisdom that comes from spending a lifetime chasing stories in the mountains. "The Way Out" is available now wherever you get your books, so follow the links in the episode notes to grab your copy. Big thanks to Devon for the chat, and thank you for listening.
