All songs related to specific years this lap around the calendar with Hank and Dan. Included: A Darky from Emi SunShine, another history lesson from Al Stewart, The Bee Gees with one you didn't even know you knew, a cycnical-per-usual track from Louden Wainwright III and an ironic twist on a famous pop song that suddenly doesn't sound that bad once you find out it contains a well placed 'F' bomb.

In which I may use the word 'you' but mostly it's to myself -- past me, present me, future me -- to assure me that I did and am doing the right thing. To drown out the fears and voices in me and memories of others' admonishments that stopped me before from running out and getting free. It was more dangerous where I was and I validate that so hard for myself, that I did what was necessary to survive. I sing a bunch of fragments, keep trying to play upside down and backwards and swear a lot but stick with it. And realize out loud and in song how crucial music is, especially when I can't pull off writing, because if I have voice I can still sing.I rant a bit about systems, as per the ushe, and also drop a little bit of possibly essential knowledge to let people know about Advanced Psychiatric Directives, MindFreedom Shield International, and The Rights of Institutionalized Persons for anyone who should find themselves in the Hotel California and unable to check out and leave. The problem with rights and laws is people have to know about them, authorities have to obey them, and/or they have to be protected and enforced however is necessary. At every step of the way people break the laws and do what they want, what they're told, what 'company policy' or 'administrative requirements' dictate, and insist that everything takes paperwork and processing and time and make it impossible for victims to obey the laws when those in charge won't. Too many expectations of us whom they work for, whom they are supposed to serve, and none of themselves. And I keep coming back to music, and magic (a difference of only two letters!), and finding art and stories everywhere. Accepting wisdom and humor from the most unlikely and accidental places. Embracing weirdness, and going with eyes and ears wide open and a camera into the darkest chaos of the endless cold madness between our stars to record what I find there and bring it back to the human animals sheltering afraid in the caves of our forebears, afraid of the darkness and wind and thunder. And zombies. Did I mention we're in a zombie apocalypse? Just go with me on this. I explain the metaphor I see to the best of my ability, and why I find it both entertaining and useful to create this story for myself about the word beyond the borders of this sanctuary.I opine most feelingly about van life; how impossibly far away a simple van feels when one is on the run with no permanent address or functional bullshit detector/suspicious bones in one's body. I cry for the moon, I sing out and sign out and clock out and now it's time to play. Play music, play make-believe, play plays, play anything, but play as well as I can. Life's not a game, it's for realsies -- but it *can* be, sometimes, if I get my mind right. If I get out of my own way. I'm playing to win, every moment, until I lose, as all living things must."Oh when I die and it won't be longHey you're gonna be sorry that you treated me wrongYeah you're gonna be sorry that you treated me badHey and if there's an after life I'll gloat and I'll be glad" --Louden Wainwright III, 'Unrequited to the Nth Degree' (featured on the T.V. series 'M*A*S*H')

For the January, 2014 broadcast of Word By Word: Conversations With Writers brothers Joe and David Henry join host Gil Mansergh to talk about their biography, Furious Cool: Richard Pryor and the World That Made Him. Joe is a singer songwriter who broke into the business as a Production Associate for Spinal Tap, the iconic band that never really was. Married since 1987 to Melanie Ciccone, Joe has penned songs for Madonna, Madeline Peyroux and Roseanne Cash. A Grammy-winning record producer, he has created albums with Louden Wainwright III, Elvis Costello, Aimee Mann, Mose Allison, Bonnie Raitt and Hugh Laurie (yes, that Hugh Laurie). David is an author, screenwriter and video & broadcast producer who lives in Louisville, Kentucky. David’s most recent screenplay, co-written with Archie Borders, is Pleased to Meet Me, based on Starlee Kine’s radio story “Everyone Speaks Elton John.” Topics range from Richard Pryor’s demons, to the “salad-making” skills of Bob Dylan and Joan Rivers, to Joe and Bob’s favorite Richard Pryor movies to what a music producer actually does. In short, one of those interesting and eclectic conversations with writers for which Word by Word is famous.
