While their debut album tagged them as Dinosaur Jr Jr thanks to loud guitars and J. Mascis behind the board, Buffalo Tom's second album, Birdbrain, builds on the raw, guitar-driven sound of their debut but with more mature songwriting and production. Produced again by J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. with Sean Slade, the album emphasizes emotional intensity over polish, with songs like "Birdbrain" and "Enemy" showcase the band's knack for combining distorted guitars with introspective lyrics. Though not a commercial hit, the album helped solidify Buffalo Tom's place in the early '90s indie rock scene and shows a significant step in the band's evolution toward the more refined sound of their later work. For this ultra rare, alone in the house, evening (!) podcast sesh, Lou plays Adelle songs from the debut Dinosaur Jr LP (1985) -and- the debut Sebadoh LP (1988). First, a somewhat raucous version of J Mascis' Does It Float, then his own Bolder. Blown away by the lyrics, Adelle has questions about Does It Float. Lou theorizes that J was inspired by the David Letterman Show segment "Will It Float". Segundo álbum de estúdio do Dinosaur Jr. e uma das obras mais barulhentas da década de 1980, "You're Living All Over Me" (1987) marca a transformação do trio formado por J Mascis, Lou Barlow e Murph. Aproveitando a volta da banda ao Brasil, Cleber Facchi (@cleberfacchi) e Nik Silva (@niksilva) conversam sobre o álbum que revelou músicas como "Little Fury Things", "SludgeFeast" e "In a Jar", e serviu de Inspiração para nomes como Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) e Billy Corgan (The Smashing Pumpkins). We are joined by a man, Byron Coley, who has more stories than we could fit into every past episode of our podcast and we surely packed as much as we could into a single sit down. We start off with some talk about what we're listening to as usual and we move on to record fair talk (don't forget about our Record Fair at Counter Weight Brewing Co. on October 13th featuring Byron selling upstairs!). Byron tells tales of driving John Fahey around looking for classical records, his process for listening to 10 new records everyday, writing for weekly publications and magazines like the Wire, Forced Exposure, Spin and on and on. We talk about the label and store he runs with his friend Ted in Florence, Western Massachusetts. We go back to his start writing a tour diary with Devo, but this is yet a scratch on the surface and this podcast is our longest yet for good reason! Check it out! We are a record store that has a heavy emphasis on the left of center / underground music of the world. Whether it be underappreciated or just has a niche audience, marginalized or just off the radar it's all of interest to us. With the show we'll generally have a localized focus. We'll discuss upcoming releases and what is in our personal rotation at the moment. We'll talk about upcoming area musical activities. We'll talk to guests who have to do with all of the above. And we'll talk about specific dealings with the store. If you have input you're welcome to contact us through email (redscroll@gmail.com).
For this month's episode we've gone back to ten years, only a few years before the podcast began to talk about our favourite songs of 2014, including trve kvlt black metal, avant garde noise, sparkly pop bangers, swedish alt country, & kraut influenced post rock. We also discuss whether Elbow make suitable gym music, global conspiracy theories involving giant stone owls, and songs that sound like you're about to be burned in a wicker man. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alcest, Alvvays, Babymetal, Devandra Banhart, Beck, Charly Bliss, Elbow, EMA, First Aid Kit, Ben Frost, Grouper, Ben Howard, King Creosote, Jenny Lewis, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, J Mascis, Mayhem, Mogwai, Opeth, Public Service Broadcasting, Röyksopp & Robyn, Run The Jewels, Svalbard, Swans, Taylor Swift, Thou, Ultimate Painting, Sharon Van Etten, Warpaint, & James Yorkston.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2juBbBjb0YxzF6VMAvNIEi?si=4334ba0599c44034Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next month or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Twitter – https://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

We're very excited to begin yet another season of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast and what better way to kick things off then with our special guest and music hero, the legendary Lou Barlow of Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion, just to name a few. Having met J Mascis back in highschool, the two set out to form their very own hardcore band, Deep Wound, after being inspired and influenced by the growing Punk/HC scene in their area. They would soon connect with Murph and the trio would establish Dinosaur in the mid 80s before renamaing the band to Dinosaur Jr. for the release one fo the most important records of all time, their 1987 classic, "You're Living All Over Me" on SST Records. Barlow soon parted ways with the band to start the incredibly prolific Sebadoh and for the past 3 decades he has created an amazing body of work that has influenced bands and artists all over the world. Whether he's playing in Dinosaur Jr, The Folk Implosions, Sebadoh, working on his own solo material, or the podcast he co-hosts with his wife called Raw Impressions, Barlow is simpy in it for the love of creating something beautiful, something valuable and its exatcly this that makes him one of the most diverse artists out there today. Enjoy!
This week, Reggie Worth and Jason Jefferies discuss the new albums released on 5/31/24 including >>>> by Beak>, Dreamachine by Habit, Ship to Shore by Richard Thompson, Jump Rope by Buffalo Tom, and The Border by Willie Nelson. Happy Listening!
With their tenth album, Jump Rope, just released, a fortunate stroke of serendipity landed Buffalo Tom's third album Let Me Come Over at the top of our most recent Patreon album poll. Having recorded their first two albums with J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., the band took a different approach for their 1992 release, heading to Fort Apache Studios to work with Sean Slade and Paul Q. Kolderie. With guitars and tempos dialed down a bit, introspective lyrics and melancholy melodies become clearer in the mix, while tasteful layers of acoustic guitars, keys, and other additions help fill-out the three-piece sound. We take a break from the 90s and spend some time in this decade with a deep dive into a fantastic little indie record from 2021: Ovlov's Buds. Coming in at just under 25 minutes in length, this record is the perfect collection of short, poppy, indie rock gems that pack a punch. Soft vocals and melodies contrasted by moments of disorienting low end and cranked up fuzz a la J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. make this record stand out in the slew of bedroom pop, punk-leaning indie records. And as an added bonus: there's even an impromptu saxophone solo snuck in for good measure. Need I say more? Tracklist Ovlov - Baby Shea Ovlov - Eat More Ovlov - Strokes Ovlov - Cheer Up, Chihiro! On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two incredible singer-songwriters who sprung from the same fertile late '80s/early '90s scene, and who are still doing it right all these years later: Joe Pernice and Bill Janovitz. Joe Pernice first found notice in the country-ish pop band Scud Mountain Boys, whose home-recorded songs landed them a deal with Sub Pop in the mid-1990s. The Scuds weren't around super long, but their end was the beginning of the Pernice Brothers, Joe's long-running band that continues to put out excellent, often melancholy songs. The latest Pernice Brothers album—and by the way, he's really the only constant member at this point—is called Who Will You Believe, and it stands up there with his incredibly durable catalog. In addition to writing and playing songs, Pernice wrote a great novel a while back called It Feels So Good When I Stop, and he even had a short stint writing for TV. But for now, he's concentrating on music. Check out “December in Her Eyes” from Who Will You Believe. The other half of today's conversation, Bill Janovitz, has been the singer and guitar player for the band Buffalo Tom since their inception back in 1986, and while there have been quieter periods in there, they've consistently released records, including the new Jump Rope, which comes out on May 31. Buffalo Tom came out of the same incredible Boston/Amherst music scene that birthed Pernice Brothers, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and many more, and these guys dive right into reminiscing about those fertile days. In addition to making music, Janovitz is also something of a rock historian, having written the comprehensive Leon Russell book in recent years, as well as a volume on The Rolling Stones. His next book is about The Cars, which these guys talk about during this chat as well. Check out “Helmet” from the upcoming album Jump Rope right here. Like I said, these guys dive back into the Boston days, talking about mutual friends and collaborators like J Mascis and David Berman of Silver Jews. They also try to remember their first encounters, one of which involves Pernice being a little ornery, and they talk about selecting songs for records—and how they never know which ones people are going to react to. Enjoy. 0:00 - Intro 2:46 - Start of the chat 7:37 - Joe's legendary cousin 12:15 - Joe walks out of college and has "a mild nervous breakdown" 18:20 - "When did you meet [David] Berman?" 23:58 - "My first album was made for $60." 31:01 - Berman wants to hear Joe say the word "cocksucker." 42:12 - Craft versus hack, and writing for TV and film Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Joe Pernice and Bill Janovitz for chatting. Megan Jasper grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts an industrial town, just an hour outside of Boston. Megan remembers it as a tough place to grow up. As a young girl, her family would travel to Boston and she and her sister would hit Newbury Comics when there was only one store. As a teen, she traveled to Boston for punk rock shows. Attending UMass, she was friends with J Mascis, a fellow student. When Dinosaur Jr toured Massachusetts in the early days Megan served as a roadie for the band. During a 1989 tour, they stopped in Seattle and that's when she decided she wanted to make it her home. After landing in Seattle, she made her way to the Sub Pop offices. Megan started as a receptionist there, when the label was a tiny operation, constantly teetering on the brink of financial disaster. She took a job with Caroline Distribution and called all the Tower Records stores in the Pacific Northwest. When Nirvana led the music explosion of the early 90's, the New York Times came calling to do a feature on the music culture of Seattle. Interviewing Jonathan Poneman, he referred the Times to Megan, now working for Caroline Records. The Times was looking for slang expressions Seattle kids used around the city. Megan made up a series of “grunge terms” she didn't think the Times would believe were real. They did, they didn't fact check and they ran it as a “Lexicon of Grunge”.After a time working for ADA Distribution, Megan went back to Sub Pop in a variety of roles (Marketing & Distribution) and worked her way up to the role of CEO where she resides today. Bright, quick, smart, and funny, you'll enjoy our conversation with Sub Pop's Megan Jasper.
On the show this time, it's the soothing acoustic jams of J Mascis. Just kidding! J Mascis has fun playing some acoustic shows, though of course he is known for playing a Fender Jazzmaster, super loud through a couple of Marshall stacks and a fuzz pedal or 2. His familiar well-worn tenor has only gained strength over the years since we first heard him with Dinosaur Jr. In this session he grabbed a 12-string acoustic and delivered an intimate soul-comforting set. His latest solo record, recorded at home, is called 'What Do We Do Now' and it is available on Sub Pop records. Recorded 01/15/2024. Born and raised in Michigan, the now North Carolina based musician joins us to talk about her childhood growing up with her older siblings, relocating to Philly where she participated in an experimental outfit influenced by the likes of Sun City Girls, the Long Hots trio, releasing her 2016 debut "Out of Love", her groundbreaking LP "Trouble Anyway", the pandemic and its effects on creatives, her 2021 follow up "No Medium", sharing space with heros MBV and J Mascis and her most recent effort "Bite Down" on Merge Records.
on his new solo album “What Do We Do Now” he combines two approaches, layering acoustic guitars under his trademark electric riffs
J Mascis is a musician best known for the band Dinosaur Jr. His new solo record, What Do We Do Now, is out soon. We chat about our trip up to San Francisco, Andre Nickatina, a dinner at Quince, hoarding family members, how he listens to music, his son likes Playboi Carti, if he likes doing podcasts, he got into fashion from his father, his relationship to the color purple, everyone thinks he's on drugs, he's an avid cyclist, Strava is the only social media he uses, he plays golf once a year, the last time he dressed up, we try to convince him to open a restaurant in his hometown, he loves a good lobster roll, breaking both of his legs at the age of seven, he's been on SNL a few times, he's tried to watch a bunch of movies lately but couldn't finish them, and how he ended up on stage with Dave Matthews. instagram.com/jmascis twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans Learn more about your ad choices. Interview with drummer composer Stephen Hodges on his new album with mssv mssv is releasing their second studio album Human Reaction in their typical style: with a 58-show tour in the U.S. and parts of Canada (dates below). The band, composed of guitarist Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges (Tom Waits, David Lynch) on drums and avant-punk icon mike watton bass, creates music that is a heretofore unimagined hybrid of a punk power-trio and a dreamy experimental rock band, though they prefer the term “post-genre.” Human Reaction is being released by BIG EGO Records as a digital download, 12” LP vinyl, and via streaming platformson September 1. Recorded mostly on May Day immediately following that last tour, Human Reaction traverses a deeply broad sonic landscape, as expected from this nearly unclassifiable group, though with even deeper twists and turns. With inventively churning drum textures from Hodges (an instantly identifiable sound honed in his days with Tom Waits and David Lynch) and the full-steam-ahead all-in attitude from watt, (as he's displayed throughout his storied career with MINUTEMEN, fIREHOSE, and Iggy & The Stooges), there is still the impression of “pressure, combustion, power, and hissing clouds of sonic poetry,” as Premier Guitar said. Also evident is the more fearless exploring that comes from a band that has spent a lot of time together crafting their vision, as well as making room for guests like J Mascis, Petra Haden and Nels Cline on some of their previous releases. Stephen Hodges is an American percussionist and composer. He is best known for his work with Mavis Staples Tom Waits,Mike Watt, T Bone Burnett Rick Holmstrom, and film director David Lynch https://mainsteamstopvalve.com Tickets to OCT 7th mssv at Beachland Tavern Cleveland OH https://www.beachlandballroom.com/e/13205278/mssv-c-level/

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Brian has been playing with some new audio hardware and we open up hard and fast with his new purchase and why it is pleasantly surprising and why he should never be allowed near the naming of pedals. Meanwhile Fender have announced a brand new fuzz pedal which has set the internet ablaze with interest and the guys take a misinformed sidewards glance at this news while Blake salivates muchly. Our good friend Mr Robert Keeley has made some limited edition "Pepper" grinders and Richard is very envious about this exotic culinary device. Richard also saw an awesome pedalboard hack on the Wampler Tone Group and he talks about why it is the way forward. He also has an exclusive David Gilmour related tip and he shares it all for you dear listener before making wildly inaccurate assumptions about synthesisers and trying to talk about Acoustasonics again.Did Joe Bonamassa have the greatest new guitar day ever? We think he may just have with his latest purchase from Norman's Rare Guitars...Have you ever bought a cheap imported clone guitar from abroad? How did that work out for you? Brian's tempted and the guys chat about knockoff guitars and crazy merchandise before Brian invents the greatest ever doorbell thus proving he is the ultimate in non-human intelligence. This week, a new contributor, Ian, talks to cartoonist and educator Johnny Damm about his recent releases I'm a cop, featuring dialogue from Police Union speeches and Riot Comics: Tompkins Square Park, which explores the 1988 Tompkins Square Riot in which Police evicted an unhoused encampment in the park on New York's Lower East Side. They discuss the collage technique by which Damm assembles his comics, how his work dovetails with the larger work of abolition, and the role of propaganda in movement-making. Listeners can follow Johnny Damm on twitter @dammjohnny (with two m's) and on IG @johnny.damm. His website is JohnnyDamm.com Also notable, are Damm's influence by Jack Halberstam's ideas that became the book The Queer Art of Failure ala the Failure Biographies book, and Damm's representations of the Compton's Cafeteria Riot, a similar but smaller trans and queer uprising in San Francisco in 1966, preceding the more famous Stone Wall Riots of 1969 in New York City. . ... . ..
