This week we're going back a few years, back to the Vault. Randy Larsen and I were doing a sub-series called Road to Ruin where we discussed records and movies that we iconic to us. Apparently, doing Werner Herzog's Bad Lieutenant was my idea. Abel Ferrara's grimey, depraved exploration of a NYC detective's descent into darkness is one of my all-time favorite movies of the 90”s. But what about Herzog's version? Intro: “All the Dark Things” – Mike Hill Outro: “Tokyo Express” – Die Haute feat. Nick Cave

It's double your O3L pleasure this week with our 4th Annual Cruel World Special! It's that time of year again - on May 17, 2025, the masses will descend upon Brookside at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA, for the 4th installment of what has become a destination, a cultural touchstone for fans of classic alternative, new wave, punk, synth-pop, goth, and dark wave - the Cruel World festival. Goldenvoice has once again put together a fantastic lineup of legends, younger bands who are carrying the torch, and a couple of surprises thrown in. This year's lineup includes New Order, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Go-Go's, Devo, OMD, Death Cult, Garbage, Madness, the first appearance of the original ‘Til Tuesday lineup in 35 years, Midge Ure, Clan of Xymox, Buzzcocks, Stereo MC's, Blancmange, Alison Moyet, and "next generation" acts like Nation of Language and She Wants Revenge. As has become O3L tradition, we celebrate this annual event with an episode where we each pick the five acts that we are, or at least would be, most excited to see at this year's festival. This year, we've got a special guest Third Lad joining us, a gentleman who can rightfully be called Gen X's DJ - someone who grew up, like us, under the spell of this music and continues to keep it alive to not only our generation, but subsequent generations. Jake Rudh has hosted Minnesota Public Radio's The Current for 15 years, the weekly Transmission club night in Minneapolis for nearly 25 years, he has been a resident DJ at the famous First Avenue (yes, where a lot of Purple Rain took place) for 15 years, as well as the annual ‘80s music festival '80s in the Sands in Mexico, which is hosted by Richard Blade and many of the classic MTV VJs. We also have Jake to thank for the amazing content on the Slicing Up Eyeballs Facebook page - album anniversaries, artist birthdays, tour announcements and other news. Plus, the world can partake in Transmission on Twitch, featuring 5+ hours of classic videos every week. Cultists, what do you think of when someone mentions Friday the 13th? A hulking hockey masked machete wielding ghoul stalking teens around a summer camp? Well, in Sean S Cunningham's original 1980 Summer Camp Slasher, very little of that iconography was in place yet. So for it's 45th anniversary your Horror Hosts are putting the original Friday The 13th on the Exam Table. Please join us for the Dissection. Yes, it only lasts for 24 hours but this year, Mother's Day brought a stark realisation with it: an etiquette guide for the day is way overdue. And on today's ep, Mia, Jessie and Holly happily provide one. Plus, subpoenas and spirals. Taylor Swift has been dragged into the Justin Baldoni v Blake Lively lawsuit, but what does that actually mean? Our hosts break down the legal drama and what's truly at stake. Meanwhile, Justin Bieber's recent behaviour has fans worried. Is this what happens when fame finds you at 12, or is something else going on behind those worrying Instagram posts? And Nick Cave's phone-smashing concert policy. We explore the bizarre reality of performers facing audiences who prefer to film themselves over experiencing the show itself. The Hailey Bieber 'documentary' everyone’s talking about, and everything that happened since. Taylor Swift has been subpoenaed in the Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni case. Her response says it all. "The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing: we know this in countless ways. It is the heart which perceives God and not the reason. That is what faith is: God perceived by the heart, not by reason." –Blaise Pascal"We must take our subtle spiritual intuitions seriously and view them as the quintessence that underlies the ordinary world. The rejection of the sacred is the fundamental reason for our existential discontent." –Nick Cave
What remains when someone we love is no longer physically with us? A conversation exploring the tension between doubt and the feeling that something continues beyond what we can see or touch. How we might speak to those who are gone, even when their ears and hearts seem to no longer exist, by voicing our love and sorrow—whether heard or not—a way in which we change both the world and our wounded hearts. And honouring the mysterious space where truth and our departed loved ones might still exist. Turning away from these deeper dimensions might be why we feel so disconnected, while embracing them offers a way to move through life with an open heart, receiving what remains precious beyond time and distance. When Nick Cave was in his early band The Birthday Party, he was angry and antagonistic toward his audience. The legendary Australian musician, writer and actor eventually grew out of his youthful contempt, but he remained consumed by his work, always putting it first before anything else. Then he lost two of his sons. In this wide-ranging conversation about grief, ambition, God and Johnny Cash, Nick tells Tom Power how he was forever transformed by his experience of unimaginable loss. He also discusses his new Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds album, “Wild God,” and the mysterious origins of his songwriting.

You can find Nickolas Butler at https://nickolasbutler.com/ or on IG @wiscobutler Amy discovered Nickolas Butler earlier this year when she attended the author event for his newest novel A Forty Year Kiss at Carmichael's Bookstore. Nick has six novels and a collection of short stories under his belt, but A Forty Year Kiss may be his first love story. His mind was set to wondering after he overheard a passionate conversation in his favorite local bar between two older people, a conversation that made him blush just a little. He began playing with the idea of what this couple's back story was. Nick's book asks readers to consider the difference between first love and love between mature adults, how life's baggage affects personal relationships, and whether people can really change. Nick also talks to us about his rural Wisconsin roots, why he read Babysitter Club books in his childhood, and the debate on whether he should wear a cape. For our book recommendation section of this episode, we decided to find some of our favorite books we've read as a result of being in a book club together for two decades. For the most part, our book club chooses novels, but there is one memoir in the lot, as well as contemporary fiction, historical fiction, sci-fi, and a classic. Books Discussed in this Episode: 1- A Forty Year Kiss by Nickolas Butler 2- Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler 3- A Paris Year by Janice MacLeod 4- Godspeed by Nickolas Butler 5- Love, Hope & Carnage by Nick Cave and Sean O'Hagan 6- The Fertile Earth and the Ordered Cosmos edited by M. Passing the thermometer of conversation over the rock and roll news to see where the mercury rises, which this week includes … … the new Barbra Streisand duets album. Duets are ‘playlets', small intense dramas that depend on human interaction, but so many are recorded separately (including, tragically, Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell). … but … duets you HAVE to hear! eg Cash & Carter, Otis Redding & Carla Thomas, Ray Charles & Betty Carter, Siouxsie & Morrissey, Nick Cave & Kylie, Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush. … the extraordinary story of the rebirth and Indian Summer of Mississippi John Hurt after 40 years of invisibility. … blues lyrics that now seem unimaginable. … Frank Zappa as a drug dealer? Miles Davis as a pimp? Cyndi Lauper as a trophy wife? Real or made-up Miami Vice rock star cameos. … great opening lines – “We got married in a fever …!” … how you always learn something you never knew about someone from their obituary - like Mike Peters' involvement in the highest altitude concert ever performed (on Everest with Glenn Tilbrook and Slim Jim Phantom). … where people listen to the Word In Your Ear “poddy” – eg in the bath, in court, at wedding receptions, by the Allman Brothers' graveside. In this soulful episode of My Music, host Graham Coath reconnects with Canadian musician Martin Saint to dive deep into Martin's powerful new album Seekers.Together, they explore the emotional landscapes that shaped the record — a body of work that's intimate, reflective, and hauntingly honest. This month we're back to the mid 80s to talk about our favourite songs of 1986, including thrash metal classics, proto-industrial stompers, enormous pop bangers, massive cheesy 80s soundtrack rock and loads more. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - a-ha, The Art Of Noise ft Max Headroom, Big Black, The Bolshoi, Bon Jovi, Billy Bragg, Stan Bush, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Crowded House, Cutting Crew, Europe, The Go-Betweens, Bruce Hornsby & The Range, The Housemartins, Hüsker Dü, In The Nursery, Iron Maiden, KMFDM, Kenny Loggins, Merzbow, Metallica, New Order, Public Image Ltd, R.E.M., Lionel Richie, Shub Niggurath, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Slayer, The Smiths, & They Might Be Giants.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2SmV87RMDnpidlUpn4m7lU?si=Ssrrhy8iRtCgFXSP9-QXug&pi=p67BZNXETwqB5Find our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes (which need updating but I plan on doing them over the next few months or so), you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdgIan's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqAand Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9NwThe playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Bluesky - https://bsky.app/profile/wedigmusic.bsky.socialInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com
Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! The late Steve Harley was most famous for his 1975 hit Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me), but there's much more to the story than one good single. We look at the band's early albums and Steve Harley's career around and after that single and the band's break up. As usual, Mick says their early stuff is way better than their later stuff! Our Album you Must Listen to Before You Die is “Tres Hombres”, ZZ Top's 1973 album containing the huge hit “La Grange”. Regular listeners might guess what we thought of the album, but let's not spoil the surprise! We also look at Louder magazine's recent poll where their readers voted for Genesis' 10 best-ever songs. Spoiler alert: Only 2 of the selected songs are post-Peter Gabriel's departure. For those interested, we covered Genesis in Series 2, Episode 15, and Peter Gabriel in Series 2, Episode 14 There's plenty here you may not have known. Enjoy! On the afternoon of Thursday, September 17, 2009, I interviewed Nick Cave in (what I recall was) the Park Hyatt's restaurant located in the Yorkville area of Toronto, Ontario. The occasion was to discuss his then new novel, The Death of Bunny Munro, and we also covered his work with Warren Ellis and the filmmaker John Hillcoat to score the film, The Road, why his new novel's depiction of sexuality was revealing for both men and women, the marvels of emerging app technology and Apple's fledgling iPhone, compartmentalizing his songwriting and literary work and heading to an office every day to get those things done, and other subjects as well. This interview was originally broadcast on the Mich Vish Interracial Morning Show! on November 11, 2009. See Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds on their Wild God Tour. At 13, Nell Smith made headlines for releasing an album of Nick Cave covers with one of her favourite bands, The Flaming Lips. After that, the promising young singer from Fernie, B.C., started working on her debut solo album, “Anxious.” But this past October, at 17, Nell's life was tragically cut short by a car accident. Now, her record has been released posthumously. Sage McBride and Tim Newton of the Fernie-based indie band Shred Kelly helped Nell write some of the music on the album. They join Tom Power to share their memories of her
As a member of Radiohead since its inception over 30 years ago, Colin Greenwood’s contributions to the group, both through his bass playing and songwriting, have helped them reach ever-higher levels of artistic and commercial prominence. A soulful, clever, and inventive bass player, his parts are always noticeable due to being highly composed and carefully considered, but never intrude on the song or call attention to themselves unnecessarily. While Radiohead’s been on hiatus, Greenwood has toured with Nick Cave and more recently released a book of behind-the-scenes photos of Radiohead over the past several decades entitled How to Disappear: A Portrait of Radiohead. In this episode, he discusses how works performed by Jonas Nordberg, Lal and Mike Waterson, and Vincent Lhermet influenced his own artistic development.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Episode 040: Buckle up for a therapy session disguised as a podcast! This week, we're diving deep into the emotional abyss with guest host Smitty, exploring music that hits harder than your therapist's co-pay. We're dissecting the darkness through Spanish Love Songs, Balance and Composure, Leonard Cohen, Badflower, Alice In Chains, and Nick Cave. Bonus: a completely uncomfortable conversation about 'the talk' that has nothing to do with birds, bees, or grammar - but absolutely everything to do with parental awkwardness. Join Cheryl Lee - That Radio Chick on STILL ROCKIN' IT for news, reviews, music and interviews with some of our favourite Australian musicians.Fergus Linacre of Kingswood takes us behind the scenes of their epic 112-show Australian tour and the raw, unflinching documentary that captured it all. After the pandemic silenced stages across the country, Kingswood made a bold decision to reconnect with audiences everywhere—especially in regional areas starved for live music. When logistical challenges made traditional touring impossible, they bought their own bus, named her Peggy, and embarked on a six-month journey that would test their endurance, creativity, and relationships. Meanwhile, filmmaker Darcy Newton documented every moment, creating what would become the award-winning documentary "ClapTrap."What makes this documentary unique is Kingswood's commitment to authenticity. Inspired by Nick Cave's willingness to be vulnerable on camera, they surrendered creative control, allowing Darcy to film everything without interference. "We're quite honest about where we're at," Fergus explains. "It's not a puff piece for the band." The result is a psychological exploration of life on the road—the highs, lows, and everything in between. The conversation reveals fascinating insights into the band's formation at Melbourne Grammar School, their musical influences (from Aerosmith to Queen), and how they balanced academic pursuits with their passion for music. Fergus shares stories about supporting ACDC and Aerosmith, including a memorable backstage encounter with Steven Tyler.Looking ahead, Kingswood announces fresh music releases beginning with their Tom Petty cover "You Wreck Me," an upcoming album, and tour dates across Australia and Europe. For fans ready to experience their powerful live performances, tickets for their upcoming shows at Port Lincoln and Whyalla will be available at kingswoodband.com.Don't miss the rare theatrical screening of "ClapTrap" at the Regal Theatre in Kensington Park on April 9—your chance to witness the untold story behind one of Australia's most ambitious musical journeys. What has Fergus Linacre and Alex Laska of Kingswood been up to lately? I think his spirit inhabits this work. And I don't even mean that in a metaphorical way, […] I feel him roaming around the songs.”

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! This episode, we look back at two hugely influential women artists – Patti Smith, whose 1975 “Horses” album inspired so many artists, and Marianne Faithfull, whose passing in January, 2025, is a huge loss. “Horses”, with its confrontational approach - “Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine” - changed the landscape of rock music for the next few decades. Produced by John Cale, of Velvet Underground fame, the album opened the door for so many women, including Blondie and so many English punk and new wave bands. We talk about why we like this album, its influential impact, and how Patti Smith developed over later years. Marianne Faithfull has long been one of our favourites, and we talked about “Broken English” in Season 3. (If you haven't heard that episode, here's the link.) Tributes have come from every corner of the industry, all saying one thing – Marianne was inspirational to everyone she worked with, from The Rolling Stones to Metallica to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Banging our own drum for a moment, we've just been named as one of the top Australian Music Podcasts by monitoring service, Feedspot, which compiles the most comprehensive list of Australian Music Podcasts on the web. Our guest today is a maverick of music, an agent provocateur whose visually arresting image, razor sharp humour and mentally challenging music helped forge that most enduring of sub-cultures; 'Goth'. Back in the early 1980s when the post-punk counter culture embraced film noir and turned the technicolor of glam into a more sinister monochromatic look, festooned with spider webs, skulls and too much eye-liner Nik Fiend was one of the original bad-taste makers at London's The Batcave club. 'Alien Sex Fiend' along with 'The Specimen' and 'Sex Gang Children' made regular appearances at the infamous Batcave. Together they helped establish the look and feel of the early Goth scene in the south, where the likes of Nick Cave, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Bauhaus, Foetus, Robert Smith and even a freshly crimped and spiked Elizabeth Hurley were all regular attendees. The world has of course never been the same, and while music and fashion constantly evolve there is alway the reverberation of the gothic asthetic. Mr & Mrs Fiend continue to create and celebrate chaos around the world, finding success on US college radio, getting 'big in Japan' and spreading their tendrils throughout continental Europe. Uncompromising, often hilarious, always a little bit shocking Alien Sex Fiend are a national treasure who have been hidden in the basement for far too long. Before we talk to Nik we do that thing we love to do, we talk about a completely different type of music! This month we are very pleased to speak to Alex Coles about his excellent book on Jazz Fusion. It is beautiful object and a fascinating discussion about how Jazz can be fused with all manner of musical styles and add to the overall effect. The discussion takes in Sinatra, Joni Mitchell, Charlie Mingus, Kendrick Lamar and Neneh Cherry. We also set aside a few minutes to discussing the giant hole in Deb's flat. Hosted on Acast. Micah the Magician and singer/songwriter Dread Persephone joined Mark and Nicole for a magical good time Micah talked about how he landed his appearance on Penn and Teller Fool Me in a very unusual way and what goes on in such a performance (in his case he had to purchase jumbo cards for Allyson Hannigan to handle) his appreciation for Edgar Allen Poe which has led to his annual variety show in tribute to Poe, how difficult it really is to juggle blindfolded while in a wind tunnel, how lucrative his residuals are for his recurring role as "buffoon #1" on Dawson's Creek and goes in depth on the legacy of Houdini and how every magician aspires to be in a straightjacket. Erin aka Dread Persephone talked about her love of Greek mythology, was surprised to learn of a British band with the same name (who of course will have to change it now) went into detail about how to build a homemade synthesizer, why she doesn't consider herself goth but goth adjacent, why she is a one person band and the challenges of playing live without a band, how even though she has a more electronic sound how she is mainly inspired by Tom Waits and Nick Cave and recites a lyric she was surprised she wrote Oh, and Nicole does a little magic as well... What actually holds you together when life blindsides you? Maybe it's a breakup. A diagnosis. Or the crushing weight of everything right now. If you're wired for hustle, your first instinct might be to work through it—to push harder, achieve more, be exceptional. What if the answer wasn't in doing more, but in seeing oneself as LESS? Wait, what? Julia Baird—broadcaster, journalist, and bestselling author—gets it. She loves being hyper-productive. But when her world cracked open, she didn't seek solace in success. Instead, she discovered the power of her shrinking self and the practice of deliberately seeking awe. In this episode, we dive into the joys (and downsides) of hyper-productivity. We examine “the shrinking self”— and why it might be your secret weapon during tough times. We talk about the sustaining power of deep friendships, ocean swimming and dancing. Last week I debuted a new series where The Ledge rights the wrongs of that inept board that handles the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. The previous episode presented artists from the 50s, 60s, and 70s that deserves to be inducted. This week we handle the 80s. Take a look at the 33 artists I present on this broadcast. You can’t deny that this would make the Hall a lot more fun. Imagine Jello Biafra’s induction speech for the Dead Kennedys! Or the remarks Henry Rollins would make for Black Flag. Or the emotions that would erupt for the late Shane MacGowan and the rest of The Pogues. How about the ensuing jam session that would involve Nick Cave with members of X, The Cramps, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, and the Fleshtones? Of course, any Hall that I curate would have to include The Replacements! In fact, just insert them into the building and all of my complaints would immediately end. (Or would it?) Artist. Poet. Friend. This week, we celebrate the music, life, and legacy of Leonard Cohen with someone who knew him well - Perla Batalla. Grammy-nominated Singer/songwriter Perla Batalla first came to prominence as a backing singer for Leonard Cohen during his 1988 I'm Your Man tour and on the 1992 album The Future, in the process forging a deep friendship. With Cohen's encouragement, Perla stepped out as an artist in her own right, releasing a beautifully diverse range of magnificent albums such as Mestiza and Discoteca Batalla, performing at the world's best venues, co-writing and appearing in two one-woman shows, honored by UN and Focus on the Masters. But she has always kept the words and works of Leonard Cohen close to her heart. Her latest album, A Letter to Leonard Cohen: Tribute to a Friend, is her second album of her unique interpretations of Cohen's music, following 2005's Bird on the Wire. It was released the day before what would have been his 90th birthday. Leonard Norman Cohen was born in Quebec on September 21, 1934. Spending the latter part of the ‘50s and first half of the ‘60s as a published poet and author, he shifted his focus to songwriting. From 1967 to 1971, he established himself as a major musical talent with the trilogy of classic albums Songs of Leonard Cohen, Songs from a Room, and Songs of Love and Hate, as well as interpretations by the likes of Judy Collins, Nina Simone, Joe Cocker, and Roberta Flack. He would continue to record and tour sporadically throughout the ‘70s and early ‘80s to widespread acclaim and with some commercial success in Europe. In the late ‘80s & early ‘90s, Cohen gained a new underground audience through his two synth-driven productions, I'm Your Man and The Future, prominent soundtrack placements, a beloved album of interpretations by Jennifer Warnes, Famous Blue Raincoat, and the 1991 high profile tribute album, I'm Your Fan, where a who's who of alternative music disciples like REM, Ian McCulloch, Pixies, James, The House of Love, Robert Forster, Nick Cave, and John Cale paid their respects to the man. The latter artist, John Cale, performed a breathtaking piano version of a song from 1984's Various Positions called “Hallelujah,” in an arrangement that would be borrowed and transcribed to guitar by Jeff Buckley a few years later, which further elevated Leonard Cohen's already mythical status. After spending the latter half of the ‘90s in a monastery as an ordained Buddhist monk, Leonard Cohen returned in the twenty first century to finish what he started, adding six additional studio albums to his catalogue, including the album released weeks before his November 7, 2016 death, You Want It Darker, and the posthumous followup completed by his son Adam, 2019's Thanks For The Dance, as well as multiple live albums, both archival and contemporary. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
