Lumineers front man and two-time Grammy nominee Wesley Schultz goes deep on his passion for songwriting. PART ONE:Paul and Scott tell the harrowing tale of the Wesley Schultz interview that almost didn't happen. Plus, do you have a question for Patty Griffin, Dave Mason, or Mary Chapin Carpenter? Share it with us and you just might hear your name on an upcoming episode! PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Wesley Schultz. ABOUT WESLEY SCHULTZWesley Schultz is best known as the co-founder, lead singer, and guitarist for The Lumineers. Founded in 2005, their blend of alternative rock, Americana, and electrifying live performances has earned them a dedicated following. Over the course of five studio albums, the band has achieved 24 #1 hits across multiple radio formats, earned over 6 billion streams, sold more than 1.5 million albums in the US, and built a Spotify following of 22 million monthly listeners. Their accolades include two GRAMMY® nominations, five Billboard Music Awards nods, an American Music Award nomination, and an iHeartRadio MMVA win for their #1 hit “Stubborn Love.” Aside from all that, Wesley Schultz is, fundamentally, a songwriter. The Lumineers' most recent album is called Automatic.

Percussion Discussion Podcast - Episode 164 - Dave Mattacks. Joining me today is the wonderful Dave Mattacks. Dave is a british drummer ( now living in Boston ) with a quite remarkable career under his belt - he is known as the Folk Drummer (much to his occasional chargrin) Having played for Fairport Convention for a long time, however he has a lot more up his sleeve, check this out for a recording and live CV.......... Paul McCartney, Elton John, XTC, George Harrison, Chris Rea, Jethro Tull, The Proclaimers, Joan Armatrading, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Richard Thompson, Steeleye Span and many many more! We had the most wonderful conversation about his career including the moment he went from trying to impress, with flashy, busy drum parts to stripping it back and playing for the song, something that is now synonymous with Dave's name. Huge thanks to our mutual pal Nigel Constable for connecting us up! Many thanks of course for giving up his valuable time to do this! www.davemattacks.com

For more than 15 years, Sharon Van Etten has worn her heart on her sleeve. Over 7 albums she's processed the raw emotions of life through some incredible songs, and continued to evolve her sound with every album. From early days playing indie folk and Americana, to big anthems, incorporating synths, and now collaborating with her band for the first time on the writing of an album. With The Attachment Theory on deck for her latest, I invited her to Take 5 with her songs of metamorphosis, and what she revealed was the very blueprint of her musical heart.Jethro Tull - 'We Used To Know' Mary Chapin Carpenter - 'Passionate Kisses'The Lemonheads - 'Ever' Nine Inch Nails - 'Terrible Lie' Portishead - 'Only You'

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2020 conversation with Lucinda Williams. ABOUT LUCINDA WILLIAMSOne of the most revered songwriters on the face of the earth, Lucinda Williams was once crowned “America's Best Songwriter” by People magazine. She first gained widespread attention after Mary Chapin Carpenter made her song “Passionate Kisses” a Top 5 hit, which earned Lucinda a Grammy award for Country Song of the Year. She went on to release a string of critically-acclaimed albums that garnered her a total of 15 Grammy nominations spanning the genres of rock, pop, country, folk, and Americana. One of the primary architects of the Americana genre, Lucinda has received more Americana Music Association award nominations than nearly any other artist, and she was the first female recipient of the AMA's Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. VH1 named her one of the 100 Greatest Women in Rock & Roll, while Rolling Stone named her among its 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. In addition to her own success as an artist with songs such as “I Just Wanted to See You So Bad,” “Right in Time,” “Essence,” “Righteously,” “Are You Alright,” “Come On,” and “Real Love,” the daughter of famed poet Miller Williams has also had her songs recorded by Tom Petty, Elvis Costello, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Patty Loveless, Bettye LaVette, and many others.

Today on the show I get to chat with Amber Rubarth! Amber left home at 17 years old to become a chainsaw sculptor in Nevada.  At 21, she quit and decided to begin writing songs and teaching herself guitar.  One of her early originals was awarded Grand Prize in NPR's Mountain Stage New Song contest.  She has performed hundreds of stages around the world, from the early days opening for a flea circus at a Texas theme park, to performing an original duet with Jason Mraz at Carnegie Hall, to full orchestral arrangements of her songs with the Ithaca Chamber Orchestra woven into classical works.  She moves fluidly between genres, creating a unique palette of instrumentation for what best serves the song. After many years of solo touring, Amber lights up these days with collaborations in both film and music.  She has written original songs and score for numerous films including Sundance festival winner 'Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work' and the super-marathon documentary 'Desert Runners.'   She co-founded 'The Paper Raincoat,' a Brooklyn-based iTunes Indie Artist Spotlight band featured in Disney's 'The Last Song,' the CW's 'One Tree Hill,' and Paste Magazine who said “We think the world might be a little better if everyone heard this record.” In 2016 she recorded a live-to-tape single microphone album with her folk trio 'Applewood Road' which the London Sunday Times gave 5 stars, calling it "a flawless set that has to be the most haunting release of the past year” which led to performances at Glastonbury Music Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, a UK tour supporting Mary Chapin Carpenter, and her original arrangement and performance featured in the 'BBC Sisters in Country' documentary with Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris. Her most recent album, Cover Crop, is 15 reinterpreted songs exploring the disconnection and remembrance of our interconnectivity with nature. Self-produced and performed by Amber Rubarth in the woods of the Hudson Valley, New York.Today Amber shares with us how she went from chainsaw sculpture to musician, what's different about her musical work then and now, how she takes care of herself (with her Matcha ritual), why and how she made the Cover Crop album, and plays a few songs for us too!Amber on InstagramHere's the Tarot Reading from Nikki Fogerty for those who want to revisit.  The Emperor and The Ace of Swords... Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

The incredible guitarist Duke Levine joins me on the show today. Back in the 90's and early 2000's when I was just getting started, Duke was putting out all these really amazing twangy instrumental guitar records. He actually started out as almost a fusion guy on his first album, but pretty quickly veered off into this highly original guitar style that has elements of blues, jazz, country, bebop and influences like Roy Buchanan, Ray Flacke, Albert Lee, I hear Wes Montgomery and Jerry Reed in there as well. The first record I heard of his was called “Country Soul Guitar” and I feel like at that time, the early 90's, no one was really playing anything like that. He's primarily a tele player and just has an incredible touch and tone that makes him a totally unique player. He put out a couple more records in that vein, but pretty quickly got scooped up as a sideperson, playing guitar for artists like Shawn Colvin, Peter Wolf, J Geils, Bill Morrissey, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Slaid Cleaves, Jonatha Brooke, and eventually his current employer, the untouchable Bonnie Raitt. The hired gun gigs really became his bread and butter and he spent the better part of the last 25 years touring with alot of those folks. Duke came up in the New England club scene, and has basically stayed in the area his whole life. During the pandemic, he put out a string of really interesting videos featuring stellar guitar playing that you can watch, and some of those videos became what makes up his most recent and amazing EP “Left To My Own Devices”.You can get info on all of Duke's activities as well as his tour dates with Bonnie Raitt over at dukelevine.com - Enjoy my conversation with Duke Levine! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Judith Turner-Yamamoto, an award-winning author hailing from a mill town in rural North Carolina, began her writing journey as an art historian, learning to appraise and describe what moved her. Her debut novel LOVING THE DEAD AND GONE, a Mariel Hemingway Book Club pick, is the 2023 Independent Publisher Book Awards Gold Medalist in Southern Regional Fiction and was shortlisted for the 2023 Eric Hoffer Book Awards Grand Prize and awarded an honorable mention in General Fiction. Her writing assignments have taken her all over the world and include interviews with luminaries such as Frank Gehry, Annie Leibovitz, Marcel Wanders, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Judith talks with me about the importance of deciding who to listen to, how nothing is ever wasted, how revisiting your work over a period of decades brings new perspective to it, and more—we may even have figured out why some people are predisposed to be plotters and some fly by the seat of their pants. Kenny Loggins Asked Eugene Ruffolo Same Question I Did. How Come I Don't Know You?

If You Don't Know About Eugene Ruffolo I'm Hoping You Willl Now.  He's not just any talent.  Eugene is a prolific and deeply personal songwriter.  The world could use more of him. His music calms people down. A mutual friend who went to school with him in NY back when, had no clue about his talent until a zoom decades later during Covid. He then became addicted to his music and kept insisting I needed to listen. So, I did. I swear I could feel his music in my veins. I was taken aback by the beauty of his vocal gift and the genius of his songwriting. As good as any famous musical artist I've ever enjoyed. I honestly was shocked I had not heard about him. Apparently even Kenny Loggins was shocked he didn't know about him after both collaborated on a segment of someone else's record.   In addition to his own songwriting, Eugene has shared studios and stages with many famous artists, drawn to his unique vocal talents. People like Garth Brooks and Tony Bennett and Kenny Loggins, Run-DMC, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Livingston Taylor, Spyro Gyra, just to name a few.  He covers themes like forgiveness, the precious bonds of friendship, the search for existential truth. Among his many worldwide accolades his music has been referred to as “the jewel of folk pop' .You'll hear for yourself if you take a few minutes to listen to this podcast of our live in-studio bonding session. Eugene even took a little musical departure recently to write and record a collection of Italian songs celebrating his Italian heritage and his love of Mediterranean and pop music, folk music. And he wrote a classy little book to along with it, on food, music, and Italian culture, which I thought was very cool.  Eugene Ruffolo also has a great sense of humor as evidenced by how he handled my ridiculous opening of my live show. En route to the studio, I reached in blindly to my purse while driving and accidentally sprayed ‘Band Aid Antiseptic Cleansing to Go Spray' in my mouth instead of the ‘Listerine Cool Mint' which comes in the exact same pump packaging. Needless to say I was an idiot.  Panicking that I might have poisoned myself but knowing that Eugene was coming into the radio studio, I decided to risk not going to the emergency room and instead spent a few hyper minutes on the phone minutes before the show started with the nurse from Band Aids 800 # who sweetly read off the chemical ingredients I sprayed on my tongue and suggested I contact poison control. Had no time for that. Instead I played a few of Eugene's songs to calm myself down LOL and give my audience a taste of his extraordinary talent including new songs he's just released. In order we sampled: Late Bloomer (My personal favorite as the words were just so good!) Bella Maria   Closer To You   Poor Lonesome Me     Like many who were just about to launch 'something' right when the pandemic hit, Eugene's best laid plans got put on hold. “Embarrassed to say it was actually because that little pandemic that pesky little pandemic got in the way because I finished the record in 2019 and I was just about to go on a tour to Europe, literally in April 1st of 2020, and then you know what happened there. So yeah, and I was about to release the record and then that happened and then I sort of just sat down." "It felt like a strange time to do it and I couldn't figure out what the right time was and all this time went by and then I thought, well, I need to get this, I need to get this record out. I have more music to make.” As far as Eugene Ruffalo's Italian songs go…his are quite beautiful. His Italian album is called ‘Canto per Mangiare'.  “I've always embraced my Italian heritage, and I always had a sort of love of Italian music, because I started going to Italy when I was a child, and I went a lot during my twenties. I spent a lot of time there during my 20s. I had all these friends, and I didn't speak any Italian when I first started going. One of the ways that I learned how to speak Italian was through the music. I listened to a lot of music, and I would ask my friends, what does this mean and what does that mean.” Eugene wanted to get to the roots of real Italian music not the stereotypical Italian songs. “That's one of the impetuses behind this record was the fact that I think in America, people only know Italian music in two ways. They know it as classical, right? Let's just use Pavarotti. Bocelli is more of a pop guy, but he has sort of a classical, he has a classical aesthetic right? Or the Italian American Dean Martin singing Volare and that kind of thing. So, I wanted to get to more because there are a lot of other aspects of Italian music. So, my record really has a few elements to it. One of them is traditional Neapolitan folk music, which is really beautiful. And then the other is just singer-songwriters from the 70s, like the equivalents of the James Taylor, Cat Stevens that we have here, but that existed in the 70s in Italy. So, I covered some of their songs, and then I wrote a bunch of tunes myself.” Eugene's about to take his first trip in 4 years to perform. He's going overseas to Ireland. He's never been there. Then on to the Netherlands. But I told him he had to come do my show first because I needed to know more about him and wanted more people to hear him so they wouldn't have to say… How come I don't know you? You'll thank me for introducing you to Eugene Ruffolo on this podcast of our live conversation on The Debbie Nigro Show.

Barry, Abigail, and guest Frances Walton discuss Mutemath by Mutemath and sample Original and Cranberry Herb from Ginger's Revenge in Asheville, North Carolina. Frances and Barry met as Patreon subscribers of Stand Up! with Pete Dominick, and Frances has appeared on Pete's show numerous times as part of his special segment “The Hue.” She has also appeared on her brother's podcast Phrankly Speaking, most recently joining him for a two-part series about Tom Cruise. Friend of the podcast Jon Carroll will be touring with Mary Chapin Carpenter this summer! You may be able to catch Barry and Abigail (and Frances) at the Charlotte show on August 11, 2023! Frances discovered Mutemath at a college concert where they opened for Switchfoot. She purchased the Teleprompt version of the album at the concert. We reviewed the Warner Bros. version. Read about the differences between the two releases. Ginger's Revenge created a character for each of their four core beers. Meet the band and check out each of their customized Spotify playlists! Abigail heard similarities between this album and Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto. Frances compared the vocals in Collapse to Joga by Björk. The “reverse back masked” music video for Typical reminded Frances of the creativity and artistry of OK Go's music videos. You can hear more about backmasking in our episode Tripping Walruses (The Beatles & Tripping Animals Brewing Co.) or in the Omnibus entry dedicated to the topic. Frances compared the syncopated drumming of Darren King, Mutemath's drummer, to the drumming in Take Five (Take Another Five) by Grover Washington, Jr. Abigail got U2 vibes from Plan B; Frances heard elements U2 in Control (she mentioned Elevation as a possible comparison). Barry contributed to his Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music thesis by comparing Control to Times Like These by Foo Fighters. Stall Out reminded Frances of Ride by Bond. Our next Jukebox episode will be Time to Pretend by MGMT, submitted by Paul Zawacki. This episode is scheduled to drop on July 21, 2023. Up next… The World from the Side of the Moon by Phillip Phillips Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. Beth Nielsen Chapman is a songwriter's songwriter. She began writing before she had any idea that it could be a career; it was just something that came naturally to her. When she first started out, there was no way to possibly imagine just how important songs would become in her journey - both professionally and personally. Here she talks about that journey, which includes writing songs for Martina McBride, Willie Nelson, Tanya Tucker, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Crystal Gayle, Juice Newton, Bette Midler, and most famously co-writing Faith Hill's hit song “This Kiss”. She has released sixteen albums as a solo artist as well. Along the way, she also talks about processing grief and loss through music (and making music through grief). We spoke only weeks after her second husband, Bob passed away. Her first husband, Ernest, died in 1994. She also tells the stories behind many of her hit songs, and lays out her philosophy of creativity and craft, including what it means to “write from the center of your truth,” channeling humanity's “collective wisdom” and what it means to have “investment without attachment” in songwriting. Beth's most recent album, Crazy Town came out in 2022. www.third-story.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story www.patreon-com/thirdstorypodcast
