Changes aren't permanent, but change is. I was certainly experiencing a lot of changes in my life through my late teens and early twenties, from new experiences to new beliefs to new tastes in music. In those years a band showed up on my radar with such a unique sound, blending prog rock with pop punk and topping it with a sci-fi story about...something, I dunno. I think it's like Final Fantasy but the guys that wanna kill God are the bad guys in this one. Regardless of the incoherence, it blew me away and became one of my new favorite things. Later on, after seeing them live, I realized I had been missing out on an entire half of their catalogue, despite owning it, and went back to listen with fresh ears, and finally it all clicked and I was in, front to back. The band's second outing in particular stuck with me, and also with a good homie of mine who i would not meet for another 10+ years. Now we join forces to take on Coheed & Cambria's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3.

Help Erin and her family here:https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/w0kvdqSometimes life throws the hardest challenges at the best people. My childhood friend Erin, who shaped my musical tastes and shared countless teenage adventures with me, is now battling Guillain-Barré Syndrome – a condition where her immune system attacks her nervous system. As a mother of twins and other children, she needs our community's support now more than ever. Throughout this episode, I share memories of our friendship, from introducing me to Story of the Year (when they were still Big Blue Monkey) to navigating the awkward terrain of high school relationships.Between urgent calls for support, I take you behind the scenes of the Two Hit Wonder Tour across California. From the historic walls of Cobb's Comedy Club in San Francisco (where comedy legends like Robin Williams once performed) to connecting with seemingly unreachable audience members at Sacramento's Punchline, these road stories highlight why comedy remains my perfect happy place despite its challenges. Plus, you'll hear about airport absurdities – from humiliating singing cupcake machines to the peculiar ways TSA consistently profiles my tour partner while I breeze through security. This episode also marks a personal turning point as I share my journey quitting vaping, establishing a workout routine, and taking control of my finances. After some challenging years, I'm embracing positive changes while maintaining the silly personality that defines my comedy. As a particularly meaningful Coheed and Cambria lyric reminded me recently, "People call it luck, but they're just trying to pass the buck" – success requires both good fortune and persistent effort. Check my social media for links to help Erin, and come see us on the Two Hit Wonder Tour as we continue bringing laughter to new cities.

HEAVY Music Interviews
TRAVIS STEVER on Balancing COHEED AND CAMBRIA With L.S. DUNES

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 13, 2025 16:03

Interview by Angela CroudaceTravis Stever, guitarist for both Coheed and Cambria and L.S. Dunes, is a musician who thrives on creative challenges. In an interview with HEAVY, Stever reflects on the evolution of Coheed's sound, the ongoing exploration of new musical landscapes, and the balance between his two distinct musical worlds. When asked about Coheed and Cambria's latest release, The Father Of Make Believe (released today), Stever notes that while the band always experiments with new sounds, what sets this album apart is the expansive exploration of styles within a familiar framework. "The box is so massive that we allow ourselves to create within it. We go outside of it, but not so far that fans will be left wondering what we're doing,” he explains. The band continues to evolve, but as Stever points out, their willingness to experiment has been a constant, leading to albums that always surprise, yet never stray too far from their core sound. At the heart of the new album lies a theme of internal conflict, a wall within oneself. Stever shares that this theme resonates deeply within the band, particularly in how personal growth and struggles are reflected in the music. He describes the songwriting process as a journey of self-acceptance, where overthinking gives way to simplicity and beauty. "You realise life doesn't need to be so complicated," he muses, pointing to the sense of peace the band has found in their evolution as both artists and individuals.Stever's dual role in Coheed and Cambria and L.S. Dunes, another band that offers a more collaborative and raw sound, presents an interesting dynamic. The contrast in approach is striking. "In Coheed, it's Claudio's songs, and I add my identity to them," Stever explains, noting that his role is often about enhancing Claudio Sanchez's vision. However, with L.S. Dunes, the creative process is more democratic, with everyone contributing equally. "It's more of a group consciousness," Stever discusses the band's writing approach, highlighting how the collaborative effort—where he adds his own contributions to the ideas brought forward by fellow guitarist Frank Iero—injects a unique energy into their music.Touring is another key topic, and Stever is excited about the possibility of returning to Australia. Reflecting on his previous experiences, including Coheed's headlining spot at Australia's Monolith Festival, Stever fondly recalls the intimate connection the band had with the audience. "Tasmania was mind-blowing," he says, sharing his appreciation for the passionate Australian fans. With talks of a 2025 Australian tour, Stever hopes the band can return and continue fostering that special connection. Finally, Stever offers insight into the evolution of L.S. Dunes' sound, specifically the band's latest record, Violet. The song's optimistic tone marks a departure from the darker, more confined themes explored in Past Lives. Stever attributes this shift to the personal growth of the band's members, especially lead vocalist Anthony Green, whose newfound sense of balance and self-awareness has directly influenced the band's sound and lyrical direction.Stever reflects on the growth of both Coheed and Cambria and L.S. Dunes, emphasising that the journey of artistic expression is always ongoing—full of challenges, rewards, and an ever-expanding soundscape.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

The event, which featured performances by Primus, Mastodon, and Coheed and Cambria, was marred by TOOL's decision to play similar sets on both Friday and Saturday nights. Despite promises of unique performances, the band repeated four songs—"Fear Inoculum," "Rosetta Stoned," "Pneuma," and "Jambi"—leaving fans feeling shortchanged and prompting boos at the end of the second show. The high cost of attending the festival, which required purchasing vacation packages, further exacerbated fan disappointment, with some even considering a class-action lawsuit. This reaction highlights the high expectations fans have for TOOL's live performances, which often feature complex and atmospheric music that explores philosophical themes.” (Perplexity) ______Hosted by: Luke = https://bsky.app/profile/rockednet.bsky.social Alex = https://bsky.app/profile/voiceofalex.bsky.social Rowan = https://bsky.app/profile/rowbuck01.bsky.social

This Week on America's Podcast with guests Andy Rodriguez and Joseph Staub, we're plunging headfirst into not one, not two, but three Pink Floyd reviews at once like a bunch of overachievers! We start our musical journey with "Meddle," then warp speed to "Wish You Were Here," and wrap it all up with a grand finale of "Animals." What are our thoughts on these albums? Well, no spoilers here! It's a must-listen for any die-hard Floyd fan or someone dipping their toes into their psychedelic waters! Tracks of the Week: - Mooger's pick is "Key Entity Extraction l: Domino The Destitute" by Coheed and Cambria—a mouthful to say and a feast for the ears! - Marc brings us "As I Am" by Dream Theater, a tune sure to make your air guitar weep tears of joy. - Andy rocks out to "Junkhead" by Alice In Chains—a song that hits harder than a Hulk smash! - Joesph cruises in with "Drive" by The Cars, a classic jam that'll have you feeling like you're in a retro music video. And wrapping it up with Jerry's pick, "Octopus" by Syd Barrett—a song so groovy, it's like a funky dance party in your ears. Until next time, remember to drop a tab, smoke some weed do a dab, and melt into the music like a cheese sandwich in a hot pan!
