If you don't have one already, Holy Week will give you a low anthropology. It shows us at our worst. It's not just the story of good vs. evil. It's also the result of such human sentiments. Disagreements, jealousy, moral posturing, denial, betrayal. It's not an easy thing to reckon with, that when God in the flesh comes to spend time among us, we nail God to the cross. Hence the great Lenten prayer of confession: Lord, we have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those thing which we ought not to have done; there is no health in us. Have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Perhaps that's why Martin Luther said, “If I were God, I'd kick the world to pieces.” But, thankfully, Luther wasn't God. God is God, and God doesn't kick the world to pieces. No, God so loves the world! God keeps entering into the world, marching into our little fickle Jerusalems. God keeps showing up, by grace, and keeps blessing our broken lives. Or, as the musician Kevin Morby puts it: “Everything we do is a mess, but, oh honey, may this mess be blessed.”

The relationship metaphor, a bridge period, and the point of entry. Justin Sullivan (Nightshop, Flatworms, The Babies) Night Shop "The Beloved Returns" LP- https://www.salinasrecords.com/products "Night Shop is the songwriting project of Justin Sullivan. Sullivan has worked as a touring drummer for the past twenty years with a half dozen DIY punk bands, including Ringers and an early incarnation of Worriers. In 2009, he joined The Babies alongside Kevin Morby and Cassie Ramone. When the band went on hiatus in 2013, Sullivan moved to Los Angeles with Morby and continued working with him as a staple of the live band and playing on all of Morby's studio albums. In the meantime, Sullivan also formed the fuzz punk outfit Flat Worms, with Tim Hellman of Oh Sees and Will Ivy. But in the middle of a tour in August of 2016, Sullivan realized the rigors of the road had grown to be too much. He made the decision to take a full calendar year away from touring and focus, for the first time, on writing his own music. Like most of Sullivan's projects, the album is a family affair. His former touring and recording partner in the Kevin Morby band, Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) plays bass on several of the songs and sings backup vocals on a few as well. Flat Worms cohort Will Ivy plays lead guitar on some, while Mare labelmate and soon-to-be touring partner Anna St. Louis sings backup on two songs. The album was engineered by Jarvis Taveniere of Woods and mixed by Drew Fischer who previously worked with Sullivan on Morby's first two records and The Babies second album Our House On The Hill. “For the past twenty years, Justin has been guided by music, moving through the world one song at at time. No matter the project, he has always been seen less as a drummer and more as the yin to the songwriters yang, with his defined ability to help craft a song into exactly what it should be. He is a secret weapon – the thread that runs through many people's favorite records. And so it is here that he steps out from behind his kit for the first time and to stage center as Night Shop. When I think about this record, a lyric from “A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall,” comes to mind. It's the line where Dylan sings, “I'll know my song, well before I starting singing.” In The Break is the product of someone who has had a lot to say and has waited for the perfect moment to say it.” -Kevin Morby" Excerpt from https://woodsist.com/product/night-shop-in-the-break-lp/ Nightshop: Bandcamp: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com Instagram: @nightshopband Website: https://www.nightshopband.com Records: https://www.salinasrecords.com/products Merch: https://nightshop.bandcamp.com/merch Flatworms: Bandcamp: https://flatwormsmusic.bandcamp.com Instagram: @flatwormsband Records: https://www.dragcity.com/artists/flat-worms Merch: https://www.merchbar.com/rock-alternative/flat-worms The Babies: Instagram: @thebabiesforever Records: https://kevinmorby.merchtable.com/the-babies/? Singer/songwriter Kevin Morby is a peanut butter and jelly man. Like most kids who grew up in the U.S. before peanut-allergy-mania, he loves the classic lunchbox version. But as an adult he’s taken to adding some very unorthodox ingredients like ... scrambled or fried eggs! In this economy?! You know who else eats a TON of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? NFL players! Actually, they eat a ton of Uncrustables, and there is data to prove it. Host Rachel Belle interviews the co-creator of Uncrustables to unpack why the world needed a premade PB&J. And we’ll learn a bit about the history of the PB&J from an expat American journalist who is heartbroken that her England-born children have no interest in her favorite nostalgic sandwich, just like everyone else in the U.K. Subscribe to Your Last Meal on Apple Podcasts or Spotify or YouTube. A pact to crowdsurf, the offer to sell a bootleg Rage Against The Machine T-Shirt for $20 at a food court in Long Island, and Greek tanning oil. Brian Schleyer (The Babies, First Bloom) "In 2008, Kevin Morby and Cassie Ramone shared a small apartment in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn for a few months and wrote some songs. After meeting again in a house party, the two decided to start a band. The idea was to recapture the early, stress-free days of playing music before they were both in groups that had gained some success and created accompanying pressures. Despite the intention, nothing much came of the idea until the next winter when both bands again had a break. Justin Sullivan, who had played with Ramone in Bossy, began practicing with them on drums, and The Babies debuted as a three-piece in March 2009 at Dead Herring, their friends' loft in Brooklyn. They played a few times before asking Nathanial Stark, formerly of Bent Outta Shape, to join on bass, and the full lineup's first shows were in that summer. The band released self-made tapes and singles for the small Wild World and Make a Mess labels before releasing their self-titled debut album for Shrimper in February 2011.They toured for much of the year, eventually replacing Stark with new bassist, Brian Schleyer. In early 2012, they left their Brooklyn home to record their second album in Los Angeles. Our House on the Hill was released on Woodsist late in the year." What communities are you part of? What does being involved in community mean for your life? Those are two of the core questions in this episode of Sunday Sanctuary. Whether we see ourselves as being community members or not, the different groups we are part of influence how we live our lives. Community connections lead to both of the interviews for this episode. First up, Petra sat down to talk with Dr Hirini Kaa, principal of Tāmaki Makaurau's St John's Theological College. Dr Kaa shared his views on what community means to him as a Māori man and how mana plays a role. Petra's second conversation is with Jenny Duckworth, someone who has lived in several communities all with a very intentional focus on serving their neighbours. This episode also sees Producer Sam head back to Cornwall Park here in Auckland to ask unsuspecting strangers about their stories of community. He also tries to bring a theme song to the episode, with mixed success..... Haere mai! And the timing is good as I'll be seeing him in concert on Oct. 2nd. I've heard that in his live show he plays a lot of the new tracks he's been releasing monthly. Several months ago that would have given me pause because I didn't much care for the first few new tracks. But they have been getting better and better with each new song. The rest of the mix is just what it says it is - a collection of quiet indie tracks, all of them released in 2023. It includes some old faves like Neil Young, Kevin Morby, Slowdive, & Julie Byrne along with new to me artists like Scott Orr, The Finks, This Is The Kit, & Jörgen Kjellgren.  Cheers!   T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Jörgen Kjellgren - Bluebird Waltz (Bluebird 2023) 04:09    Scott Orr - Horiszon (Horizon 2023) 07:45    Peter Gabriel - Love Can Heal(Darkside Mix) (2023) 12:57    Silvana Estrada - Milagro y Desastre (2023) 16:54    Julie Byrne - Flare (The Greater Wings 2023) 20:14    This Is The Kit - Careful of Your Keepers (Careful of Your Keepers 2023) 23:01    The Finks - Marco Polo (Birthdays at Solo Pasta 2023) 27:06    Arborist - Dewdrop Cherryoak (An Endless Sequence of Dead Zeros 2023) 32:19    Kevin Morby - Like a Flower (Music From Montana Story 2023) 35:30    Dean Johnson - Faraway Skies (Nothing For Me, Please 2023) 39:00    Neil Young - Star of Bethlehem (Chrome Dreams 2023) 41:35    DeYarmond Edison - Ragstock (Epoch 2023) 44:04    Allegra Krieger - Lingering (I Keep My Feet on the Fragile Plane 2023) 47:21    Indigo de Souza - Younger & Dumber (All of This Will End 2023) 51:50    JFDR - The Orchid (Museum 2023) 56:00    Slowdive - prayer remembered (everything is alive 2023) 60:30    end

Lydia Ramsey - “I Will Wait For You” from the 2022 self-released album Like A Dream. Lydia Ramsey is an Indianola, WA-born, Seattle-based Americana artist that's been channeling the vintage folk sounds of Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt since 2016. Her wistful melodies and enchanting vocals and often simple in presentation: just a guitar or banjo, perhaps some twinkling piano, and showstealingly lovely coos. Her latest record Like A Dream was released in September and hones in on the collective thoughts, anxieties, and loneliness felt during the pandemic. Our Song of the Day “I Will Wait For You” is especially relatable looking back on those lockdown days but also for many still, as she speaks to a friend - or perhaps to herself - in the depths of despair, encouraging them to keep moving forward. “Running through your head /What if this lasts forever,” Ramsey quavers. “It's bitter end in these days without being close together.” Resiliently, she presses on, hoping, waiting, and praying for the day in which things “will be better than ever.” Ramsey collaborated with a number of longtime musician-friends, engineer Johnny Bregar, and New York-based engineer/producer, D. James Goodwin (The National, Kevin Morby, Blitzen Trapper) on Like A Dream. On Slow Fawn, Sam Cohen, a producer, songwriter, and musician known for his work with Apollo Sunshine, Yellowbirds, Kevin Morby, Danger Mouse and Karen O, creates a glowing, meditative space. Inspired by Terry Riley's A Rainbow in Curved Air and drawing from long jam sessions with his collaborators, it reflects Sam's desire to "create a world without friction, where you could float and feel joy." Combining dashes of jazz, synthesized new age, pop, and minimalist grace and it's a record we've returned to many times over the last few months. Cohen joins host Jason P. For their debut album, Salvation Prayer, the French band You Said Strange recorded in Portland with Dandy Warhols guitarist Peter G Holmström. For they're latest LP, titled Thousand Shadows Vol.1, they hunkered down at home, building their own studio in Évreux, equipped with a vintage analog console and microphones gathered during previous tours.  The band told Psychedelic Baby Magazine that the change enabled them to "become autonomous with our gear, build a cocoon and stretch our creation on a bigger space of time. Taking time to refine our sound and our compositions." As a result, the group's sophomore full-length is a thoughtful, intimate affair, produced by Daniel James Goodwin (This Is The Kit, Kevin Morby, Wand). Kevin Morby - "A Random Act of Kindness," from the 2022 album This is a Photograph on Dead Oceans With today's Song of the Day, Kevin Morby aims to explore the duality of language on this impassioned piece of Americana. He explains in a press release: In ‘A Random Act Of Kindness' I set out to write a song where each line could be interpreted in two completely different ways. For example; when I sing the words 'out of trust…' it could be heard as either I have lost my sense of trust in something or that I am committing an act with trust as my motive. It's a song about the menacing nature of the sun rising during a dark time in one's life only to further illuminate their pain and suffering – and how during these periods it is often the selfless acts of strangers that keeps a person going. Sonically I am so proud and surprised by where we ended up with this one. Producer Sam Cohen and I had set out to make a sort of windows-down-mid-tempo-cruiser and somehow, with weeks of exploration, made a sonic rocket ship that shoots you out into outer space over the course of 4 minutes. Enjoy! Morby returns to Seattle on November 11th, playing The Showbox. Night Shop - "Let Me Let It Go" from the 2022 album Forever Night on Dangerbird Records. Night Shop is the solo project of Justin Sullivan, who can often be seen hitting the skins as the touring drummer for Kevin Morby, in addition to playing with Waxahatchee, Hand Habits, The Babies, Anna St. Louis, and LA post-punk outfit Flat Worms. This past February, he unveiled Night Shop's debut album Forever Night via Dangerbird Records which saw a lot of these prior collaborators give back to their favorite drummer. Early single and Song of the Day “Let Me Let It Go” features Meg Duffy of Hand Habits on guitar, Jess Williamson, Anna St. Louis and Woods/Purple Mountains' Jarvis Taveniere providing engineering and co-production alongside Sullivan so it truly is a family affair. The rollicking horn-laden track its inspiration from Dante and Beatrice's love and “the concept of courtly love,” according to Sullivan. “A journey to hell, the pursuit of art, the Shangri-Las, and finding peace in what is, not how we think things should be.” The video for the track sees Sullivan fleeing directors Jeff Davenport and Cooper Kenward, sprinting through the streets of LA. “I think we just wanted to offer a sense of escape and abandon that comes with both loving someone and also surrendering our attachment to a certain outcome in regards to that love,” Sullivan explains. “I'm just trying to get at the proper expression of a feeling; in this case, a deep yearning. So I think visually, you want to complement that sense. A desire to see and feel everything and escape from the smallness of your own thoughts.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
