Through the revenue generated at a hotel, conservation programs should be put in place. Understanding the idiosyncrasies of natural sites is key to successful projects. Embracing and respecting Mother Nature's beauty is crucial in landscape and architectural design.Budget is a key component of any project, and when clients come in with big dreams, balancing those two desires can be tricky. To alleviate this, strong communication allows you to educate clients on what can realistically be achievedThe best way to learn about a site is to physically  spend time there before you start designing. By sketching on site, you get new perspectives and up close details that may not be accounted for on a first pass render. If you are building a hotel in an area with a limited talent pool, training local citizens is a strong strategy. Last June, Nth Degree and its PE owners, MSouth Capital, bought Fern Expo. John Hense, who joined Nth Degree in 2018 as CFO and was elevated to CEO in late 2021, now serves as CEO over both companies.  Hense brings 20 years in leadership roles in growth-oriented companies. His previous three leadership roles were technology-focused with logistics-intensive companies, including Flash Global Logistics, Diligent Delivery Systems and most recently Ship Supply.  In this episode of Trade Show Talk, Hense shared his experience as a leader with PE-owned companies from outside the industry and how he's putting those skills to use in the event and trade show sector. He and Podcast Host Danica Tormohlen talked about the recent acquisition and integration of Fern Expo.  Context: Nth degree serves its clients at more than 13,000 event and trade show projects annually while Fern Expo services more than 1,400 events annually, including many top 100 shows and dozens of Fortune 500 companies.  Hense told us Nth Degree has doubled its revenues and events since 2019 by implementing technology and a new lead strategy. He talked about how he sees a similar growth trajectory with Fern Expo over the next few years. In a world of self-service portals and customer service lines that proudly announce “that your call is important to us. There are just 48 callers in front of you, and your wait time 1 hour and 6 minutes” there has to be another way.  You know real service when you see it. But how can leaders deliver it and build it into their business?  Business owners and employees are all looking for an edge, something that makes their business or personal brand shine brighter than the next.  Why not through customer service?  Burkhards call this the concept of Nth Degree.  There is an internet meme that proposes that Chick-fil-a should be hired to administer COVID vaccines.  If you do not have Chick-fil-a in your town, they are known for more than just great chicken. They are known for the individualized service and always going the extra mile to provide exceptional experiences. They're also known for being closed every Sunday, exactly when you're craving a chicken sandwich, but I digress.  Chick-fil-a has Nth degree service in its DNA. Even the most simple things compound to make big service differences. For example, when you say “thank you” Chick-fil-a employees don't respond with “youre welcome” they say “my pleasure”.  According to Chick-fil-A lore (not yet an established genre), the chain's founder, Truett Cathy, got the idea while staying at a Ritz Carlton. When he said "thank you" to a hotel employee, he was pleasantly surprised when the employee replied, "my pleasure". In Cathy's mind, those two small words made the Ritz Carlton stand out as a luxury establishment, so he brought it into practice in his own restaurants. Which is no surprise really. The Ritz Carlton co-founder, Horst Schulze, led the hotel chain to become the gold standard in service excellence.  And his book, Excellence Wins, is a worthy read.  The Ritz Carlton has a reputation for never cutting service corners.
