Mohammad Rasoulof, the Iranian director whose films have consistently challenged the authority of the Islamic Republic, has faced imprisonment and persecution for his artistic vision. While serving time in Iranian prison for his films A Man of Integrity and 2020's There Is No Evil, Rasoulof began to think about his next film, The Seed of the Sacred Fig. He was released from prison and began filming The Seed of the Sacred Fig in absolute secrecy while still under close scrutiny by the government. The Seed of the Sacred Fig is a gripping drama that explores the impact of authoritarian rule and political unrest on a family in Iran. Iman has just began a new job as an investigating judge in Tehran's Revolutionary Court when protests break out in Tehran. Paranoid about being hunted by protestors for his role in the regime, he clashes with his wife and daughters at home. When his gun goes missing, he suspects one of them has taken it, leading to a breakdown of trust within the family. In late 2023, Rasoulof reached out to editor Andrew Bird, with whom he had previously collaborated on Manuscripts Don't Burn in Germany. This time, however, the collaboration would be fraught with extraordinary challenges. With Rasoulof still in Iran, direct communication was severely limited, relying on long phone conversations facilitated by an interpreter. Andrew received an English translation of the script, but his lack of Farsi proficiency presented a unique hurdle. “I have edited a number of films in languages I don't speak,” says Andrew. “It's pretty easy to tell, even without the language, which performance is good and which isn't. I don't really need to understand the language for that.” Rasoulof sent footage in small, uploaded files, only with a few favorite takes marked. Andrew began editing as the film was being shot, piecing together the narrative puzzle without knowing the full scope of each scene. He was particularly struck by the film's powerful imagery and the challenging locations, given the clandestine nature of the production. “It was weird because normally you have a director with you so you're throwing ideas out there and the director's throwing ideas out there, and then suddenly something new emerges, and that leads you to places where you'd never have anticipated getting to,” says Andrew. “All that was lacking in this process because we were in two separate countries. I had to rely on myself, I had to really examine everything a lot more closely. It was enriching as well, because it really gives you more confidence in your own decisions and your own instincts.” After completing filming, Rasoulof made a daring escape from Iran, crossing the border illegally to return to Germany. He has since been able to travel and promote The Seed of the Sacred Fig, which has garnered critical acclaim, including multiple awards at the Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination for Best International Feature. For Andrew, the experience was profoundly meaningful. “I feel incredibly privileged to be part of this,” he says. “I think when I started making films, it was with this naive belief that you could change something in the world with your art. To be able to work on a film that does make a little difference somewhere in the world is an incredible privilege. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do it.” The Seed of the Sacred Fig is currently available for purchase on VOD. Philip Andelman's inspired take on the language and rhythm of music videos has impacted the medium in countless ways. The results are evident in his collaborations with contemporary artists, including Usher, Melissa Etheridge, Ludacris, Maxwell, d4vd, James Bay and Taylor Swift. Formative experiences with Annie Leibowitz launched his entry-point into photography. After NYU, continued experiential education under the guidance of Joseph Kahn, the legend, exposed Philip to the world of music videos with an ethos to help keep head above water. He worked as a second unit director on some of the most pivotal music videos ever made, including Moby's Southside and U2's Elevation. Soon after came the opportunity to step into the director's chair for the first of six video collaborations with Lenny Kravitz, beginning with 2004's Where Are We Runnin - a hedonistic exploration of faith. Some of the notable videos in Philip's catalogue include John Mayer's Waiting on the World to Change; Duck Sauce's It's You; Fiona Apple and Andrew Bird's Left Handed Kisses; Miriam, by Norah Jones; and Beyonce's Halo, featuring Michael Ealy. In our conversation, we discussed the origins of his journey and upbringing in France and New York; the grant he received from Martin Scorsese; the artistry in working with Maxwell; showing Jay-Z what he thought was an unfinished video; and a fateful Samsung commercial he directed. We also discussed his degree of versatility, and its effect on transcending genre.Opening Credits: Anitek - Tab & Anitek - Mina I CC BY-NC-ND 3.0; Genx Beats - Lofi Beats - 01 Always (Lofi Mix) I CC BY 3.0. Nora O'Connor is a super collaborator, someone who loves singing harmonies and makes everyone sound good. She's a member of the Chicago all-star group the Flat Five and a formidable singer-songwriter in her own right, as her 2022 solo album, My Heart, her first in 18 years, reminded us. Here she reflects on her life as “a music worker,” including what she's learned from performing with such artists as the Decemberists, Iron & Wine, Mavis Staples, Andrew Bird, the New Pornographers and Neko Case. How has she has balanced her career and family life—and would a male performer have faced similar challenges? What ambitions does she have for herself and the Flat Five? What's the secret behind the alchemy she creates with frequent collaborator/Flat Five bandmate Kelly Hogan? And what role has the Chicago club the Hideout played in her musical life?

In 1973, before their ascent to rock superstardom with Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were just two young lovers making music in Los Angeles. Their debut album, Buckingham Nicks, though commercially unsuccessful at the time, would prove to be the catalyst that changed their lives. When Mick Fleetwood happened to walk into Sound City Studios and overheard Buckingham's masterful guitar work, he knew he'd found what his band desperately needed given the departure of their guitarist Peter Green. Fleetwood invited Buckingham to join the group, and Buckingham agreed on one condition: his musical and romantic partner, Stevie Nicks, would come too. This fateful meeting would birth the legendary lineup that created Fleetwood Mac and Rumours, albums that would define a generation. Yet all this time, the band's origin story, captured in Buckingham Nicks, has remained locked away in aging vinyl archives – until now. Grammy-winning guitarist Madison Cunningham and virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird have breathed new life into this historic recording with their interpretation, Cunningham Bird. Cunningham, celebrated for her sophisticated fingerpicking and intricate compositions, joins forces with Bird, whose distinctive violin work and plaintive vocals have earned him critical acclaim. Their reimagining of this pivotal album offers fresh insight into both Fleetwood Mac's enduring influence and the rocky romance that sparked their success. I sat down with the duo to discuss their approach to this legendary material and what drew them to resurrect these long-lost songs. Switched On Pop spoke with Madison Cunningham and Andrew Bird about how they adapted Buckingham Nicks into Cunningham Bird Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Andrew Bird has been on a quest for meaning in sound since childhood, starting with the violin at age four and earning a degree in violin performance from Northwestern University. His journey has taken him from classical and folk roots to the vibrant Chicago swing scene, to creative isolation in a barn in Western Illinois, and eventually to become a gendre defying artist and composer with a unique voice. Andrew's lyrics are both confessional and impressionist, often leading listeners on a journey through evocative imagery. With just a looping pedal, he reinvented his sound, blending classical, folk, and indie rock and crafted a distinct sonic landscape that defines his music today. After nearly three decades and 20 albums, Andrew continues to evolve. His latest release, Sunday Morning Put On, pays tribute to jazz standards while maintaining his signature sound. He describes it as a “sabbatical” project, giving him space to reflect and create without pressure. Just recently, he released Cunningham Bird, a tribute to the classic Buckingham Nicks album. Here he shares insights about his early days, the isolation that shaped him, songwriting as a form of “speaking in tongues”and the lessons learned from performing standards. www.third-story.com www.leosidran.substack.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

Pete Min is a recording engineer, producer and label owner based in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles. His label Colorfield Records features artful collaborative explorations with musicians in unlikely configurations. Pete's studio Lucy's Meat Market has become one of the most in demand spots for recording among a subset of musical artists with LA ties ranging from Ben Wendel and Larry Goldings to Andrew Bird and Feist. Min started Colorfield Records to pursue a less traditional approach to recording, one that he refers to as “sculpted chaos.” He says, “I want what's in the subconscious. I don't want it ironed out. Our guest is veteran music publisher and industry expert Randall Wixen, who has just released the fifth edition of his book The Plain and Simple Guide To Music Publishing.Music publishing is one of the most complex parts of the music business, and yet it can be the most lucrative area of income for musicians. Wixen presents a clear, concise approach on how music publishing works today. The book includes a foreword by Tom Petty, among the many who put their trust in Wixen with their music catalog. Wixen is one of the most respected names in the music industry. He's the founder of Wixen Music Publishing, Inc. in Los Angeles. With a sister company, Wixen Music UK Ltd. in London, the companies administer the song catalogs of many top artists from the last 50 years, ranging from George Harrison, the Doors, Neil Young and Tom Petty, to the Black Keys, Andrew Bird and Fitz & The Tantrums.Randall gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the music publishing business in this interview plus his thoughts on the recent legal battle between Daryl Hall and John Oates, the famous 1984 lawsuit where John Fogerty was being sued for stealing a song he wrote himself, the Vanilla Ice vs Queen legal battle over his use of the song "Under Pressure", and more. This is a fascinating look at the side of the music business few know.Purchase a copy of The Plain and Simple Guide To Music Publishing [5th Edition]Visit WixenMusic.com in the USVisit WixenMusic.co.uk in the UK---------- BookedOnRock.com The Booked On Rock YouTube Channel Follow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOKINSTAGRAMTIKTOKX Find Your Nearest Independent Bookstore Contact The Booked On Rock Podcast: thebookedonrockpodcast@gmail.com The Booked On Rock Music: “Whoosh” by Crowander / “Last Train North” & “No Mercy” by TrackTribe
MDJ Script/ Top Stories for July 18th Publish Date: July 18th Commercial: GON :30 From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, July 18th and Happy heavenly Birthday to astronaut John Glenn. ***07.18.24 – BIRTHDAY – JOHN GLENN*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Cobb County and Six Cities Enter Historic Mediation at Marietta Hilton Cobb School Board to Set Millage Rate Cobb Denies Austell Man Selling Antiques from Home Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on seedless watermelons. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: ‘Historic': Cobb County and Cities Enter Mediation In a historic development, Cobb County and its six cities are undergoing formal mediation for the first time under state law regarding Service Delivery Strategy Agreements. Held at the Marietta Hilton, the mediation aims to resolve disputes over how services and funding are distributed between the county and cities, crucial for state compliance. Issues include differing interpretations of duplicate services and fiscal responsibilities, with potential consequences like loss of state funding if no agreement is reached by October 31. Mableton, transitioning to cityhood, observes closely as its services depend on the mediation's outcome. STORY 2: Cobb Scholl Board to Set Milage Rate The Cobb County Board of Education is set to decide on maintaining a flat millage rate of 18.7 mills for 2024, despite rising property values expected to bring in an additional $54.96 million in tax revenue, a 7.32% increase from last year. While this won't increase taxes, homeowners could see an average increase of $255.17 in property taxes for a $450,000 home. Debate among board members includes potential implications of rolling back the millage rate to mitigate tax hikes, amid community concerns over tax burdens and budget allocations already in place. Public input will influence the final decision at tonight's meeting. STORY 3: Cobb Denies Austell Man Selling Antiques from Home This week, the Cobb Board of Commissioners rejected Edwin Stafford's request to operate an antique store and yard sale from his home on Austell Powder Springs Road. Stafford sought a 24-month permit to sell antiques on weekends after complaints from neighbors and businesses about his previous unauthorized sales. Despite Stafford's plea that this business was his livelihood, Commissioner Monique Sheffield cited ongoing violations of county codes and noted that Stafford's activities didn't fit the area's development plans, which aim to attract more structured businesses. The board unanimously denied Stafford's application, leaving him to consider alternatives for sustaining his business. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info. We'll be right back Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Proposed East Cobb Whataburger Deferred The Cobb Board of Commissioners voted 4-0 to extend Whataburger's request for a site plan change for a new restaurant at the former O'Charley's location in east Cobb. The fast-food chain, aiming to establish its fifth Cobb County location, faced delays due to incomplete architectural landscaping plans. Issues arose regarding compliance with Cobb County Tree Ordinance parking lot tree standards, requiring adjustments such as additional parking lot peninsulas. The proposed site plan conflicts with prior land-use restrictions prohibiting fast-food restaurants and drive-thru services, stipulated in a settlement with Sembler Retail and Sembler Family Partnership in 1999. The matter will be reconsidered at the next zoning hearing on August 20. STORY 5: OUT AND ABOUT: 5 Things to do This Weekend in Cobb County—July 19-21 The Southern-Fried Gaming Expo, Atlanta's 11th annual gaming convention, takes place at the Cobb Galleria Centre and Renaissance Waverly Hotel & Convention Center this weekend. Attendees can enjoy free play on over 500 arcade games, pinball machines, and video game consoles, alongside celebrity guests and hundreds of tabletop games and events. Hours are Friday 3-11:45 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-11:45 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Swiftie Night at Jennie T. Anderson Theatre offers karaoke, trivia, and music bingo this Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m., featuring activities and themed attire for Taylor Swift fans. Kennesaw presents an outdoor movie screening of "Top Gun: Maverick" at Swift-Cantrell Park on Friday, starting with family activities at 6 p.m. and the movie at sundown. Nickel Creek and Andrew Bird perform at Coca-Cola Roxy on Friday at 7 p.m. Tickets range from $61 to $181 for VIP, celebrating Nickel Creek's new album. Black Violin celebrates 20 years of music at Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre on Saturday at 8 p.m., with ticket prices from $39 to $200 for VIP table seating, featuring a blend of classical and hip-hop violin music. Margaret Glaspy joins me on the show this week. Her album from last year “Echo The DIamond” was one of my favorite records of the year. Margaret started out as a fiddle player, and played pretty seriously around California as a youngster before dedicating herself to the guitar and eventually going to Berklee for a short time to study. She played around Boston and then moved to New York where she found her way into the creative music scene in Brooklyn in the mid 2000's. She started making EP's and then full-legth albums in around 2016. I first heard her “Emotions and Math” LP and was really intrigued by her approach to writing, and especially how she seemed to build intricate, angular guitar parts that would weave through her songs. “Devotion” came next in 2020, and then “Echo The Diamond” in 2023. On “Echo”, her songwriting is incredible, her guitar playing is intense and jagged, the band is stellar (she's working with Chris Morrissey who has played with Andrew Bird and Ben Kweller, and David King, the drummer for The Bad Plus). It's a co-production with her husband, Julian Lage, and Margaret has also produced several of Julian's recent releases. She just released a solo acoustic record called “The Sun Doesn't Think” and we talk about all of these projects here today.Check out all of Margaret's amazing music and find out where she's playing over at margaretglaspy.com - Enjoy my conversation with Margaret Glaspy! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Eine neue CD von Andrew Bird – vorgestellt auf NDR Kultur.
This week, hosts Reggie Worth and Jason Jefferies discuss the new releases from 5/24/24 including Dark Times by Vince Staples, Frog In Boiling Water by DIIV, Sunday Morning Put-On by Andrew Bird, Alan Hampton and Ted Poor and News of the Universe by La Luz, and they also discuss the classic questions of the medium vs. the message and art vs. artist by way of Vultures I by Kanye West and Ty Dolly $ign, and Heatwave and Star Sign by Ryan Adams.
Andrew Bird takes a slight detour into the world of jazz standards while keeping his own impeccable standards high on the brand new Andrew Bird Trio album Sunday Morning Put-On (Loma Vista). Paul has a forthright conversation with a virtuoso musician, smart producer, and as we discuss, an occasional actor (TV's Fargo). On our survey of the week's most exciting new albums, WRTI's Nate Chinen and NPR Music's Sheldon Pearce get all wrapped up in the amniotic embrace of a new album by a guru of the L.A. ambient-jazz scene. The new album by Carlos Niño & Friends is called Placenta. If you know anything about Niño, you'll probably be able to guess that the subject that title suggests — pregancy and childbirth — are taken very seriously. Those "Friends" are crucial too: Niño has become a central figure in a scene whose reverberations are starting to be felt well beyond the community itself, and are drawing more artists in. You can hear Niño on André 3000's flute album New Blue Sun, and André returns the favor here. Also this week: The fourth album by DIIV sees the indie rock group leaning into shoegaze-inspired sounds, and Andrew Bird creates an album in tribute to the "Golden Era" jazz tunes of the 1930s and '40s he heard on Sunday morning radio shows as a young adult in Chicago.Featured Albums:• Carlos Niño & Friends, Placenta• DIIV, Frog in Boiling Water• Andrew Bird Trio, Sunday Morning Put-On Other notable albums out May 24: • Tiny Habits, All For Something• Vince Staples, Dark Times• Alex Sipiagin, Horizons• Machinedrum, 3FOR82• Joshua Moshier, semipermanence• Nathy Peluso, GrasaLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Ani DiFranco began recording and self-releasing her music as a 20 year old in Buffalo, New York in 1990. 34 years later she is widely considered to be a feminist icon. But in many ways she emerged iconic, fully formed and fearless. A facile lyricist with a biting honesty, she played guitar with a virtuosic, rhythmic style. And she was ahead of her time as an independent artist who owned all her own masters and controlled most of the major aspects of her career. She's sometimes called the mother of the DIY movement. DiFranco has released all of her albums (over twenty) on her Righteous Babe record label. The label has also put out projects for other distinguished singer songwriters including Andrew Bird, Utah Phillips, Arto Lindsay, and Anaïs Mitchell whose own Hadestown project was first released as an album on Righteous Babe before being transformed into the Broadway hit that it is today. Ani Difranco's most recent studio album Revolutionary Love came out in 2021. In 2022 she published a picture book for children called The Knowing which she described as “an Ani DiFranco-style lullaby, inviting young readers to ponder the distinction between outer forms of identity and the inner light of consciousness.” And she will join the cast of Hadestown on Broadway in February, playing the role of Persephone, a part she sang on Anais Mitchell's original Righteous Babe recording in 2010. So it's both her broadway debut and a fill circle moment. In recent years Righteous Babe has released anniversary editions of Ani's early recordings. In 2022 she revisited the 1998 album Little Plastic Castle, sharing anecdotes and memories of the making of it on social media, and playing some of the songs live. Her memoir, No Walls and the Recurring Dream, was published in 2019. Here she talks about how she sees her work today (“my job is connecting with people”), her early career (“it was relentless”), avoiding being labeled or boxed in (“I feel like a survivor of labels”), her idea of success (“successful artists are not necessarily the best selling”), raising children in an era of performative identity, practicing revolutionary love and why it's easier to tell the truth than to hide yourself. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios 0:00 Intro 12:00 Interview
'Tis the season for a repeat episode. I chose this interview with musician Andrew Bird from the archive because he always reminds me of the holidays. Before I play my 2019 conversation with Bird, I speak about how an episode he recorded in 2020 with Maron impacted me, including his perspective on ‘molting'. Despite the discomfort I felt revisiting something recorded nearly 4 years ago and judging my past self, what Bird shared with me in our conversation feels as relevant today as it did then. We covered the slow growth he experienced coming up as a musician, discipline in building his career, and how his strict classical violin training required strict adherence to rules—rules he ended up breaking to create his own signature style. He's extremely prolific: since this interview was released, he's put out 4 additional albums, including his HARK! which I talk about in the introduction. In this interview, we focused on My Finest Work Yet, which had just come out. Like all his albums, it's filled with smart lyrics and mythology (which we talk about in this episode) as well as fresh melodies and probing themes. Recorded in a crowded room at a music festival, the sound is different than usual. And you might notice some odd jumps from topic to topic as we made the best of the audio we had. You'll hear us jump around from how he writes songs, to how he met his wife, how he spends his mornings, parents his son, and of course, how he began incorporating whistling.
