What makes a great frontman? A technically perfect voice? Good looks? Someone who can work the stage and crowd? Someone who oozes personality, charisma, and showmanship? Does your mind instantly go to classic frontmen like Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, or Robert Plant? This week, we look at some of those frontmen who carried the torch during the classic alternative era. One of those guys is this week's Third Lad, Adam Sherman, the frontman for Boston power-pop rockers Private Lightning, who released an excellent underrated self-titled album for A&M Records in 1980. Following Private Lightning, Adam was the lead singer and songwriter in Americana band The Souls and a member of Boston rock n' roll institution Nervous Eaters. Adam's song from the last Nervous Eaters album, "Don't Need To Make You Mine" was named as the "Coolest Song in the World" on Little Steven's Underground Garage in 2024. Adam has also released the acclaimed solo albums Songbird, River of Dreams, and Triangle Sky - with a brand new record, Sorrows And Smiles, out in February. Learn more about your ad choices. Music industry professional with decades of experience in recording studio management. She is the Director of Studio Operations at The Hideout in Las Vegas, where this interview was recorded, and started her career at the famed Power Station Studios in New York City. There she met producer, musician, and actor Little Steven Van Zandt, who hired her to work for him as an engineer and as a musician in his band Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, going on to work with him for eleven years through many recordings and tours. She later returned to Power Station to become their studio manager and eventually president of the company. She continued as manager of Hit Factory Studios in New York City, overseeing nine studios and 75 employees, before the Palms Casino Resort courted her to Las Vegas to build and operate the Studio at the Palms where she worked for 15 years.
This week we're talking to Mike Ness who has led SoCal punk icons Social Distortion since 1978. The band just released Born to Kill which is their first album in 15 years. It's been a long time coming, delayed further by Covid and Mike's cancer diagnosis and successful treatment. Mike discusses the making of Born to Kill, the '70s inspirations behind it, and working with producer Dave Sardy and collaborators Lucinda Williams and Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. We also talk about how beating cancer energized his desire to make even more music, Social Distortion's upcoming tour with The Descendents and The Chats, early Social D documentary Another State of Mind, playing Little Steven's Underground Garage Cruise, five records he thinks everyone should own, and more. -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, host Charles sits down with brothers Matheus and Thiago Khouri of the Brazilian rock band Banda AL9. The duo shares the story of their first concert experience — seeing Paul McCartney at Morumbi Stadium in São Paulo in 2010, when Matheus was just 12 and Thiago was 10. Raised by rock-and-roll-loving parents who saw Queen at the same stadium in 1985, the brothers grew up immersed in the music of the Beatles, Deep Purple, and other classic acts. Their father taught them guitar, and before long they were forming bands with school friends. The name "Banda AL9" itself is a nod to a street name in Portuguese and the number nine, inspired by Jack Black's declaration in School of Rock that nine is a magic number. The conversation traces the band's rise from humble beginnings posting cover songs on Facebook and YouTube in 2013 to becoming a viral sensation. After strategically building a fan base with acoustic covers of fifties and sixties rock classics, they released their debut EP of Portuguese-language originals in 2019, with the song "Ela Me Ligou" becoming their first viral hit in Brazil. The pandemic era saw them recording a live studio album just before lockdowns began, and by 2023, everything changed. Their original song "Charma De Amor" exploded on TikTok and Instagram, reaching audiences far beyond Brazil. This caught the attention of world-famous DJ Steve Aoki, who invited them to perform at Tomorrowland and encouraged them to record in English — leading to the international hit "She Calls Me Love." Matheus and Thiago also discuss their exciting new chapter with Little Steven Van Zandt's Wicked Cool Records label. Through a connection with artist Kurt Baker, Steven heard their music, loved it, and signed them — even writing an original song for the band, set for release in July alongside their new album, Hey, Hey, We're Banda AL9. The brothers recount their whirlwind first trip to New York City, which included a live session at SiriusXM's Underground Garage, a free concert at the Cutting Room, and meeting Nickelodeon star Drake Bell. The episode wraps up with an acoustic performance of their latest single, "She Can Do It All," and talk of a potential U.S. tour later in the summer — with a stop in Chicago for fried chicken and deep-dish pizza high on their wish list. BANDS: Banda AL9, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen (E Street Band), Deep Purple, Little Richard, Queen. VENUES: Allianz Parque, Cutting Room, Morumbi Stadium, SiriusXM, Tomorrowland. Ozzy Osbournen ja Ronnie James Dion laulettua Black Sabbathin keulahahmoina, 1980-luvun alussa bändille koitti vaikea aikakausi. Sitä kutsutaan nimellä ”Lost Years”, hämärät vuodet. We're in a New York State of Mind. Sure, L.A. has beaches and sun, San Francisco clings onto its peace and love vibes, Chicago oozes the blues, and these make for remarkable settings for great songs, but New York…New York is something different. She's an active participant in the music, the protagonist, the antagonist, a vessel for vibrancy, romance, drama, grit, grime, decay, revitalization, glamour, hope. The American dream. From street corner doo woo groups to Bleeker Street folkies to CBGB punks to Brooklyn indie rock hopefuls, New York has long had a story to tell through the eyes, minds, and voices of the artists who chronicle her, some of whom are intrinsically intertwined with heartbeat of the city. One of the finest ever to do it is undoubtedly the man we are fortunate enough to call our Third Lad. After coming up in the New York folk clubs of the early '70s and the punk clubs of the latter half of the decade, Willie Nile released his self titled debut album on Arista in 1980 to rave reviews, with Stereo Review naming it the album of the year right alongside The Clash's London Calling also earning him a handpicked slot opening for The Who on their 1980 U.S. tour. After two more major label records, Willie has released a series of acclaimed indie releases, including 2006's Streets Of New York, 2013's American Ride, 2020's New York At Night, and 2021's The Day The Earth Stood Still. He's now back with his first 15th studio album and 21st LP overall, The Great Yellow Light, a passionate, anthemic blend of thundering rockers and sensitive ballads. It's a stellar addition to a brilliant and literate catalogue that has thrilled Willie Nile ardent fans and friends such as Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Lou Reed, Ian Hunter, Graham Parker, Lucinda Williams, and Little Steven. Before becoming a rock ‘n' roll frontman, Michael Des Barres was making his mark on screen—starring alongside Sidney Poitier in the 1967 classic To Sir, With Love. But it wasn't long before he traded the film set for the stage, forming glam rock outfit Silverhead in the early '70s before moving on to Detective, one of the few bands signed to Led Zeppelin's legendary Swan Song label. Hanging with Page, Plant, and Bonham was all part of the ride. In this episode of My Rock Moment, Michael shares his wild journey through music and acting—from those early days in London to writing one of the biggest songs of the 80s, to stepping in with The Power Station just days before Live Aid, and later, his unforgettable run as Murdoc on MacGyver. We also talk about his time with Pamela Des Barres, his show on Little Steven's Underground Garage, and the wise advice Sidney Poitier gave him early on. Singer, songwriter, producer, and actor Steven Van Zandt aka Little Steven is perhaps best known as a member of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. But the talented musician also co-founded the band Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, as well as his solo act, Little Steven & The Disciples of Soul. He later found success in an entirely different career, playing the inimitable role of Tony Soprano’s consigliere Silvio Dante in The Sopranos and Frank Tagliano in Lilyhammer. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member recently released his autobiography, “Unrequited Infatuations,” which chronicles the many twists and turns that make up his remarkable life. Steven tells Alec why Bruce Springsteen was originally not allowed in his band, why he decided to walk away from the music business, and how he became a part of television history - twice. Interview with Willie Nile ! The Great Yellow Light is filled with passionate guitar-driven, melodic songs, a mix of anthemic rockers and sensitive ballads with a subtle socio-political message throughout. Willie was joined in the studio by his core band Jimi Bones – electric & acoustic guitars, backing vocals, Johnny Pisano – bass, backing vocals and Jon Weber – drums, providing soaring lead vocals, electric guitar and piano himself. Besides Earle, special guests include Irish music icon Paul Brady on vocals, The Hooters' Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian on keys and strings respectively, Black 47 members Larry Kirwan, Fred Parcells, and Chris Byrne and legendary sidemen Waddy Wachtel and David Mansfield. Nile's love for life and music has powered his 45-year recording career. The Buffalo, NY native made his way to New York City in the early 1970s. After establishing himself as a popular presence on the downtown club scene, Willie attained national recognition through his widely acclaimed first three major-label albums — Willie Nile, Golden Down and Places I Have Never Been. Next, he then embarked on the indie route with a long series of well-received album releases including Beautiful Wreck of the World, Streets of New York, House of a Thousand Guitars, The Innocent Ones, American Ride, World War Willie, New York At Night, Children of Paradise, The Day The Earth Stood Still, the acoustic If I Was a River, and the covers collection Positively Bob: Willie Nile Sings Bob Dylan. Working on his own terms has allowed Willie to expand his audience to encompass much of the planet. He's toured North America and overseas regularly building a sizeable and devoted following for his incendiary live performances. His loyal fan base includes such admirers as Bruce Springsteen, with whom he's guested onstage on multiple occasions, and Pete Townshend, who personally requested him as the opening act on the Who's historic 1980 U.S. tour. The list of avowed Nile fans also includes Bono, Lou Reed, Ian Hunter, Graham Parker, Jim Jarmusch, Little Steven, and Lucinda Williams, who once remarked, “Willie Nile is a great artist. If there was any justice in this world, I'd be opening up for him instead of him for me.” Appropriately, an Austrian filmmaker is currently making a documentary film about Willie, with new footage shot in Italy, England and America. http://willienile.com/ https://www.facebook.com/willie.nile

"Xtra Cherries" An aspiring baseball player with a solid fastball, the Illinois-born Chip Znuff put down the glove in favor of the bass and he left home at 17 going west with his punk rock band D-Generation. The D Generation story is told best by Chip himself, so I'll leave that one to him, and I'll cover what happened after that band broke up. Licking his wounds from his first time around on the rock and roll train, Chip formed Enuff Z'Nuff in 1984. Inspired by everyone from The Rasberries to Cheap Trick to Squeeze, Enuff Z'Nuff had pop hearts filled with hooks, but they were marketed as glam metal dudes, which led them into that lane, but it was probably a misrepresentation of the band's real chops. If you listen to the music and and ignore the image, they come across more like a tougher version of Jellyfish. Nevertheless, they made it work; in spite of their image, hits from their debut self-titled album like Fly High Michelle and "New Thing" were catchy blasts of ragged psychedelia that found the band all over MTV. Their follow-up record Strength found them looking decidedly less glam and it garnered rave reviews from Rolling Stone and the Washington Post and they absolutely crushed it on Letterman. Over the course of their career, Enuff Z'Nuff has toured all over the world, been on Howard Stern numerous times, been featured on VH-1, played on the Jenny Jones show, had Little Steven sing their praises as one of the most underrated bands on the planet and have put out close to thirty albums, including greatest hits and live recordings. Although the band has had its share of tragedies, losing members like Derek Frigo and Rickey Parent and its share of personnel changes with singer Donnie Vie stepping away from the band on two separate occasions, Enuff Z'Nuff are survivors. Chip took over vocals in 2014 and the band has never sounded better. Their new album Xtra Cherries has a deep bench, featuring Steve Stevens, Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, Donnie Vie, Gunnar Nelson and Steven Adler, who Chip played with in Adler's Appetite. The album is a refreshing blast of gritty pop that's played with muscle and heart, each track finding the band tearing the cover off the ball. https://enuffznuff.bandcamp.com/album/xtra-cherries https://www.enuffznuff.com/music www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers: Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com (mailto:editor@stereoembersmagazine.com) BLUESKY + IG: @emberspodcast

It's been a minute since our last proper episode, so thanks for bearing with us! We've been hard at work on two special episodes that break our normal format. Introducing "3 Album Runs." We'll devote a full episode to dive into 3 albums from one artist, discussing the music, the context in which they came out, and connecting the dots of how the music progressed over time.Today, Danny takes the lead on a series of 3 albums from the Boss: Bruce Springsteen. This run takes place in the 80's when Bruce was at the height of fame, but the uninitiated may be surprised at what they hear: a subdued demo-tape of an album and a mostly solo "bedroom" divorce album as the bread of the meaty, saucy "Born in the U.S.A." samwidge. Not only do we give our thoughts on these three albums, but we provide the context in which they came out: Bruce's arc up to this point, the state of his mental and physical health. Plus, where in the world is Little Steven, how did "A Star is Born" (2017) predict the future of popular music - and what does that have to do with Bruce Springsteen???Next week we will discuss a 3 album run from J Dilla, and then we'll be back to the regular format.Sources:"Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen"There Was Nothing You Could Do: Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA' and the End of the Heartland" by Steven Hyden"Bruce" by Peter Ames CarlinSongs featured in this episode:"Born in the U.S.A. - Live September 1985""Banned in the U.S.A." - 2 LIVE CREW"Sandpaper" - Zach Bryan feat. Steve Conte became lead guitarist in one legendary band, the New York Dolls, and co-wrote half of his latest album, The Concrete Jangle, with the main singer-songwriter of another one: Andy Partridge of XTC. Conte is a longtime New York working musician who has played with such artists as Paul Simon, Peter Wolf, Phoebe Snow and, in a great story, Chuck Berry. Now he has released two solo albums on Stevie Van Zandt's Wicked Cool label and has two songs vying for the Coolest Song of the World 2024 on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Here he recalls what it was like to join the New York Dolls and to work with David Johansen—and with guitar in hand, he tells how he got connected with Partridge and demonstrates how the two of them wrote some very catchy songs together. Because we're readers and whatnot, this week we get literate on y'all and discuss some of our favorite rock n' roll memoirs. Our Third Lad knows a thing or two about great rock memoirs, because he just published one...singer, songwriter, guitar hero, baseball aficionado, and now author...Steve Wynn from The Dream Syndicate! His memoir, I Wouldn't Say It If It Wasn't True, is out now from Jawbone Press, covering his earliest days as a kid in LA falling in love with music, and down the road that took him to and through the first era of The Dream Syndicate. As a companion to the book, Fire Records simultaneously released Steve's first new solo album in 14 years, Make It Right, featuring songs that were inspired by the process of writing his memoir and reflecting on his life, from his beginnings in "Santa Monica" to present days on "Roosevelt Avenue". Steve is currently touring the eastern part of the US, with west coast and European dates to follow in early 2025, promising "a night of songs and stories" that you won't want to miss. Keep up on the latest news at https://stevewynn.net. During our conversation, we also cover: The Paisley Underground - the LA neo-psych scene that also spawned The Bangles, Three O'Clock, The Rain Parade, Green on Red, The Long Ryders! The lasting legacy of their classic 1982 debut The Days of Wine and Roses! What's in store for the out of print Dream Syndicate records Medicine Show (1984) and Ghost Stories (1988)? The 21st century return of the Dream Syndicate! Living with a drummer! (Don't worry, it's his wife Linda Pitmon, not Tommy Lee...) Little Steven's Underground Garage Cruise! Baseball! His supergroup The Baseball Project with Linda Pitmon, Scott McCaughey from Young Fresh Fellows / The Minus 5 and Mike Mills and Peter Buck from R.E.M.
