This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring our own podcast host and trumpeter John Snell, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Getting to know John Snell"   Who is the man behind the microphone?   You've been asking for a long time, 12.5 years and 138 episodes in fact, and today's the day: it's time to put John Snell himself on the other side of the bell!   John is the steadfast presence at Bob Reeves Brass, from the shop to the studio to the numerous conferences and events he attends every year. Many of you have met him in person over the years, and with our increasing number of video episodes, you have a better sense for what he's like.   Yet his story has only emerged in bits and pieces over all that time and all those episodes, and warrants the spotlight just as much as any of the wonderful guests who have stopped by the podcast since 2013.   And who better to interview John than the gregariously awesome Vinnie Ciesielski, who was himself a guest on The Other Side of the Bell, Episode #93 back in September of 2021.   Vinnie and John chat about how John grew up to follow in the footsteps of his professional trumpet-playing father, Keith Snell, yet forged his own path through his education, musical styles and interests, before a sudden complete career U-turn that proved to give him another solid professional foundation, alongside his continued passion for music.   And behind it all, for the past 20+ years, there's been Bob Reeves Brass. John talks about first meeting Bob and being taken under his wing, before returning with a law degree in hand to rescue the business, provide stability for Bob and his wife into retirement, and maintaining Bob's principled approach to business and customer service.   Thank you to Vinnie for encouraging the idea and bringing this episode to life, and thank you to all of our wonderful listeners and viewers for your continued support.   Don't forget to share this and other episodes with your friends in the trumpet world and beyond, and send us your thoughts and feedback! Email John at info@bobreeves.com     Episode Links:   Bob Reeves Brass website (bobreeves.com) Bob Reeves Brass store (trumpetmouthpiece.com) Bob Reeves Brass on Instagram LA Lawyers Philharmonic (lalawyersphil.org) Vinnie Ciesielski website (trumpetvinnie.com) Vinnie on Facebook     About John Snell:   John Snell is co-owner of Bob Reeves Brass, where he has been a vital team member since 2001. After an extensive apprenticeship, he became the company's lead valve alignment technician, personally working on thousands of instruments. Since 2010, John has also managed the business, guiding its growth while maintaining its reputation for uncompromising craftsmanship.   An accomplished trumpet player, John has performed with ensembles including The California Brass Ensemble, The California Brass Quintet, The Northridge Brass Quintet, the San Bernardino Symphony, and as lead trumpet in the Big Band of Barristers - a busy big band made up of lawyers, judges, and law students.   He hosts three popular podcasts - The Other Side of the Bell, The Trombone Corner, and The Horn Signal - interviewing top brass musicians worldwide. John regularly presents clinics on trumpet, equipment, and mindset across the U.S., Europe, Japan, and Australia.     About Vinnie Ciesielski:   Attending Towson University in Maryland, Vinnie Ciesielski majored in music performance on trumpet. Vinnie has years of experience playing and touring all over the world and has a wealth of studio knowledge and creativity!   Since coming to Nashville in 1992, Vinnie has played on thousands of recordings with artists such as Taylor Swift, Josh Groban, Demi Lovato, Grace Potter, Jimmy Buffet, Kirk Franklin, Queen Latifah, Jill Scott, Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, Israel Houghton, Toby Keith, Thomas Rhett, Blake Shelton, Jon Pardi, Alison Krauss, Steven Tyler, Vince Gill, Michael McDonald, Keb Mo, Zach Brown Band, Lyle Lovett, Travis Tritt, Tracy Byrd, Smokey Norful, Shirley Ceasar, Rance Allen, Donald Lawrence, The Clark Sisters, Tanya Tucker, Glenn Frey, T.D. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2017 conversation with Jimmy Webb. ABOUT JIMMY WEBBJimmy Webb emerged as a superstar songwriter and arranger in 1967 when two of his songs – The 5th Dimension's “Up, Up and Away” and Glen Campbell's “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” - were among the five nominees for the Grammy's Song of the Year award. He went on to write a string of major hits for Campbell, including “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” "Where's the Playground Susie,” “Honey Come Back,” and many others. Additionally, he penned “MacArthur Park,” which was a hit for a diverse range of artists, including Richard Harris, Waylon Jennings, Tony Bennett, Andy Williams, and Donna Summer; “The Worst That Could Happen,” which was a Top 5 hit for The Brooklyn Bridge; “Didn't We,” which was recorded by Thelma Houston, Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, and Barbra Streisand; “All I Know,” which became a Top 10 hit for Art Garfunkel; “The Moon's a Harsh Mistress,” which has been recorded by Joe Cocker, Judy Collins, Linda Ronstadt, and Josh Groban; and “If These Walls Could Speak,” which was recorded by Glen Campbell, Amy Grant, Nanci Griffith, and Shawn Colvin. Others who've covered material from the Jimmy Webb songbook include Diana Ross, Dusty Springfield, Nina Simone, The Four Tops, Roberta Flack, The Temptations, The Association, Tom Jones, Dionne Warwick, Cass Elliot, Harry Nilsson, Nancy Wilson, Cher, Bob Dylan, The Everly Brothers, Nick Cave, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Sheena Easton, David Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, R.E.M., Aimee Mann, America, Aretha Franklin, Isaac Hayes, Peggy Lee, Bette Midler, James Taylor, Carrie Underwood, Dwight Yoakam, and The Highwaymen (consisting of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson), who took Jimmy's song “Highwayman” to #1, earning him a Grammy for Country Song of the Year. As an artist, he has released more than a dozen albums. One of the most celebrated songwriters on the planet, Jimmy is the only individual to win Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. Additionally, he has received ASCAP's Lifetime Achievement Award, the Influential Songwriter Award from the National Music Publishers Association, and the Academy of Country Music's prestigious Poets Award. In 2015 he was named among Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. Jimmy's memoir, The Cake and the Rain, details his formative years and early career through 1973. It's available now from St. Martin's Press.

Today on another encore edition of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we are talking to entertainer Bobby Brooks, whose story about his celebrity parent is like none other. Of all the episodes we have done over the past four years, Bobby's is totally unique and left us incredulous. You see, Bobby had no idea his father was the late, great singer Jackie Wilson until he was well on his way to his own recording career. And it was because of his voice, his on stage moves and his mannerisms that friends of his father's made the connection because Bobby, essentially, WAS Jackie on stage but had no clue himself. Bobby tells us about his roots in South Carolina, the physical and financial difficulties he experienced as a child as well as his love of music from a very young age. We discuss his time in the Navy which led him to Hawaii where he performed with a very young, pre celebrity Bruno Mars in the family band, later being discovered by Paul Revere (of Paul Revere & the Raiders fame) and his connections to The Four Tops, The Temptations, Billy Davis and other music greats. So who and how and where did Bobby find out he was the son of Mr. Soul, Mr. Excitement Jackie Wilson? Welp, it's too good to share here. So take a listen to this upcoming episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast where all will be revealed. You won't believe it. Everyone has a story. Bobby's is remarkable.

(S4-Ep13) The Four Tops - Reach Out (Motown)Released July 1967 and Recorded between 1966-1967Reach Out is the Four Tops' best-selling studio album and a landmark Motown release. The album features their signature hit, “Reach Out I'll Be There,” It showcases Levi Stubbs' passionate vocals, dramatic orchestration, and the Funk Brothers' impeccable musicianship. Other standout tracks include “Standing in the Shadows of Love,” “Bernadette,” and “7-Rooms of Gloom,” all highlighting the group's dynamic intensity and James Jamerson's masterful bass playing. This was the last album the Four Tops recorded with the legendary Holland–Dozier–Holland team before they departed from Motown, marking the end of an era. To broaden the group's crossover appeal, Motown's Berry Gordy had them cover several contemporary pop hits, including The Left Banke's “Walk Away Renée,” Tim Hardin's “If I Were a Carpenter,” and two Monkees songs, “I'm a Believer” and “Last Train to Clarksville.” Though some of these covers felt somewhat forced, the album remains a defining moment in their career. Reach Out was a commercial success, reaching #11 on the Billboard Top LPs chart and #4 in the UK. Its legacy endures, earning a spot on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and solidifying the Four Tops' place in Motown history.Signature Tracks: "Reach Out I'll Be There,"  "Standing In The Shadows Of Love,""Bernadette"Full Album: YouTube  Spotify Playlists: YouTube  Spotify

Starting out as a drummer in the 1970s, he worked with artists like The Marvelettes, Mitch Ryder, The Platters, The Coasters, Buddy Miles, Alphonse Mouzon and The Drifters.  In addition to providing a platform for popular and lesser-known funk & soul music, "A Funk Above the Rest" has featured interviews with Otis Williams of The Temptations, Teena Marie, Rare Earth's Peter Rivera, The Four Tops' Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Jeffrey Osborne, Emilio Castillo of Tower of Power, Jimmy Castor, Klymaxx's Cheryl Cooley, comedian Sinbad, ex-Michael Jackson guitarist Jennifer Batten and Mothers Finest. Reeves' distinguished career includes several other media projects, many of which continue today. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. It's perishing cold in our frostbitten London HQ but we warmed our toes around a blazing conversational fire and roasted the following chestnuts … … “the job of pop records is to be better than the year before”. … the real reason new music tends to sound the same. … Johnnie Walker – “his voice was his instrument”. … The Kinks, The Shangri-Las, the Beach Boys, the Supremes, the Four Tops, the Righteous Brothers and the relentless change and variety of “the annus mirabilis” of the pop single. … “Netflix rock documentaries are just there to stop the male member of the family cancelling their subscription”. … the Byrds' Mr Tambourine Man, a cornerstone of psychedelia and indie rock. … the drum sound that “kicked open the door to your mind”. … when novelty was 70 per cent of the appeal. … the key moment in the career of Peter Waters Dingley was the day he changed his name. … making records defensively. … the only current match for the thrill and daily drama of the mid-‘60s pop charts is the Premiere League. … plus a Lego record-player and birthday guest Andrew Slattery.Tickets for Word In Your Ear live here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bowie-in-london-and-hollywood-tickets-1118845138929?aff=oddtdtcreatorFind out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. PART 1 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. This 2-part BEST OF ROCKBUSTERS Compilation is based on the comprehensive 6-part ROCKBUSTERS compilation of every Rockbuster segment from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show (released previously). CHAPTERS: Weezer, Coldplay, Justin Timberlake (0:00) Destiny's Child, Puff Daddy aka Diddy, The Bangles (10:43) The Dandy Warhols, Holly Valance, Whitney Houston (17:59) Foreigner, Shalamar, Bananarama (25:33) Adam Ant, Pixies, Anita Baker (33:14) Four Tops, The Charlatans, Freda Payne (40:45) Busted, The Spinners aka Detroit Spinners, Born Slippy (48:40) Limp Bizkit, Turin Brakes, Terence Trent D'Arby aka Sananda Maitreya (55:17) Junior Senior, Alison Moyet, Buzzcocks (1:06:39)

NBC's AGT, CNNLots of Great Stuff Happening for Landau, International Travel, New Music, & Fatherhood!  Part 1Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. first burst onto the national conscience as the Sinatra-and-Soul singing  on NBC TV's “America's Got Talent with his incredible voice, undeniable charisma and unparalleled showmanship.  And a decade later, he's still going strong.Seeing Landau in concert is a revelation; backed by the dynamic Landau Big Band, you'll always hear swinging arrangements of Great American Songbook classics from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat ‘King' Cole and many more, along with a dusting of that special Motown Magic that is sure to move your feet and make you sing along. And after the show, every show, you'll always have the opportunity to meet Landau one-on-one for photos and have the chance to talk with him about his incredible rags-to-riches story.  “It's my favorite part of the night; it's something we always do. Sometimes I'm the last one at the venue, talking to fans and friends. The janitor is waiting on me to lock up!”Landau was born into extreme poverty in the Appalachian coalfields of southern West Virginia. His parents split while he was in elementary school, and Landau was shipped off to Detroit in the middle of the night. He woke up in the Motor Cities notoriously gang and drug-riddled “7 Mile” neighborhood. Landau likes to say that he went from Almost Heaven to Little Baghdad overnight! After a series of dead-end jobs, run-ins with the police and a too-soon failed marriage, Landau eventually found himself homeless and sleeping in his car. Then, his voice became his calling card.“I loved to play basketball in Detroit, and these guys were good. Some of them went onto the NBA. But we were in the hood; it wasn't anything to see guns drawn on the court after the game, so to keep people cool and laughing, when I'd dunk on someone, I'd sing a Frank Sinatra song like “Fly Me To The Moon” and everyone would laugh and put their guns away.”At the end of his rope, Landau tied a knot and pulled himself back up by auditioning for NBC TV's “America's Got Talent” with thousands of others. After months of competition, Landau emerged the winner, scoring a million dollars, a recording contract, and America's hearts, and he's never looked back.Landau's Columbia Records debut album “That's Life” reached number one on the Billboard Jazz Charts and was followed by “Christmas Made For Two”, “Landau” and his latest “Landau Live In Las Vegas” recorded during a performance at the legendary Caesar's Palace.  Landau has made dozens of TV appearances including “The Today Show”, “The View”, CNN, “Fox and Friends”, “The Talk”, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Hollywood Christmas Parade. In 2021 Landau proudly released LANDAU LIVE IN LAS VEGAS a pre-pandemic recording at Caesars Palace that includes several never-before-released tracks. Enjoy Landau's unique take on the Great American Songbook as well as classic R&B, all backed by his long-time stellar musicians in LANDAU'S LITTLE BIG BAND, with guest background vocals by former Temptations and Four Tops lead singer Theo Peoples!© 2024 Building Abundant Success!!2024 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23bAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud
