I own every single album by the Indigo Girls. I'm a true fan. I know the deep cuts. The obscure songs. The ones most people have never heard of. But the album I reach for the most?...Their greatest hits. The one with all the favorites. The songs I already know I love. And it got me thinking… What if your farm had a "greatest hits album"? Most farmers are sitting on their most powerful sales tool… and not using it. Your best sellers—the products your customers already love—are doing more work than you think. But if you're not intentionally leveraging them? You're leaving money on the table. In this episode, I'm breaking down how to identify your farm's "greatest hits"… and more importantly, what to actually do with them so they drive more sales, higher order values, and repeat purchases. We sure do love a list! And Loudwire has put out their list of 80s bands that should have been bigger! And we have a lot to say about this list -- the ones we agree with, the ones we don't really like, and the ones who may not have deserved to have been any bigger than they were. Plus we each list the 80s bands we love that we think should have been bigger. But first we have some music news to cover with the passings of Dave Mason and Alan Osmond, plus a sad announcement from the Indigo Girls. We'd love to hear your thoughts about 80s bands that should have been bigger. The dirtiest four letter word is A.I. The moment the robots take over the world, we die. We die. For this reason and many others we're ready to Melt The Bots with the second half of our list in Top Ten Songs Against A.I. Part 2. Joe Lavelle came through for us in style, as he helped us put together a playlist befitting our current situation, with songs that question and resist an uncertain future, and songs that value humanity over machinery. We deserve a voice in whether or not this "world-changing" technology is all they say it is, and by "they", we mean the people with the money. For a hundred reasons, we're against it, and we have the songs to back us up.If you missed Part 1, start here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-717-top-ten-songs-against-a-i-part-1-w-joe-lavelle/id573735994?i=1000762382186Do yourself a favor and take in the official Top Ten Songs Against A.I. playlist, featuring every song heard in Parts 1 & 2:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3FQjX5zA7X9QCPCQsaexFm?si=bab9644a12b3440cWe've lowered our prices, but not our standards over at the ATTT Patreon! Hour 1: ‘Melrose Place' actor dies at 57. Happy 420! There are plenty of movies to choose from to celebrate: Reefer Madness, Jay and Silent Bob, Pink Floyd's ‘The Wall.” Vinnie can't believe Cheech and Chong aren't on the list of the best. If you want a scary movie, the kid in the new ‘The Mummy' movie will do. ‘Project Hail Mary' is still raking in the big bucks. Plus, Vinnie started Dan Levy's new show ‘Big Mistakes.' Here's what we all think. What do you know about the iron maiden? No, NOT the band. Vinnie's putting a stop to the Napoleon propaganda. Then, Sarah reminds us of one of Vinnie's most embarrassing moments. Hour 2: The Jennifer Hudson Show has been renewed for a 5th season. Dylan Sprouse is in the news for tackling a potential home intruder in his back yard. Bob's the only one who knows who this is. Drew Barrymore is giving up bras. Sarah and Vinnie can't wait to have Ozzy from Survivor on the show tomorrow. Californians are still buying their doobie on the streets. Ever been in a hot air balloon? A skydiver crashed into a scoreboard this weekend at the Virginia Tech spring football game. Crawfish ice cream has become this Texas shop's #1 menu item. Would you try it? Hour 3: Cher is a Grandma! Turns out she has been – Sarah has all the insane gossip. Ryan Reynolds opens up about Blake Lively's case… sort of. Natalie Portman is pregnant with her 3rd kid at 44. Eddie Murphy is being celebrated! Mike Myers helped do it right. There's too much TV, but here's some more to watch! Apple is one step closer to Ready Player One, and a young woman has died in the process. A humanoid robot is faster than a person. Is this impressive? Put that trophy next to your other trophies. Italy is the first country to give paid time off if your pet is sick. A Chevron executive suggests people drive less amid high gas prices… Thanks for the wise words. Hour 4: While filming a Netflix documentary, two former One Direction bandmates allegedly ended up in a physical altercation. Coachella Weekend 2: Sabrina Carpenter brought out Madonna; Addison Rae brought out Olivia Rodrigo; Somber brought out Billy Idol and Steve Stevens; The Strokes got political. Outside of the desert, Indigo Girls are still touring despite major health issues. Ice Spice was in a bizarre fight at McDonalds. Let's go with doobage. Vinnie's telling us about a bed with really strict rules.

Welcome to 19Stories: from Fear to Hope. I'm your host, Cheryl Holling, in this podcast we explore stories of resilience, transformation, and the courage to step into new beginnings. My guest today is Amy Bolduc, a woman whose life beautifully weaves together compassion, creativity, and community. After years in her hometown of Brunswick, Maine, Amy relocated to Virginia—a move inspired by her desire for a longer growing season and a fresh chapter in life. She shares her home with a rescue dog, two cats, and a flock of chickens while balancing her work in healthcare, her award-winning podcast 'Grounded in Maine', and her small-batch jam business, aptly named 'Amy's Garden Jam'. Amy is also a contributing author to Breaking the Silence, Volume 3, an anthology that uplifts survivors' voices and offers readers the strength of shared healing. I first met Amy through the New England Podcasters Group, founded by the always-inspiring Ande Lyons, where I quickly came to admire Amy's warmth, authenticity, and the powerful way she uses her involvement with the New England Podcasters community. In today's conversation, you'll hear about what motivated Amy's move, how sustainability fuels her work, her role in Breaking the Silence, and the many ways she stays grounded while inspiring others to do the same. How much do you know about lichens? These incredible taxa are understudied, but today's guest is making sure they're not undervalued. “You can't look at lichens under a microscope and not become immediately obsessed,” says Dr. Erin Manzitto-Tripp. “It's an endless world of magnificent, beautiful biodiversity.”Erin works in the mountains of Colorado to describe new species of lichens along with the rest of her fantastic lab. Frank Swart was born and raised in Boston. He grew up hearing the big band swing records and classic Broadway show albums that were in his parent's record collection, along with the music that his sister (who was ten years older) listened to including the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Sly and the Family Stone, and Led Zeppelin. He also developed a love for Miles Davis' 1970s recordings, the spiritual Jazz of John and Alice Coltrane, and the deep soul and blues of Chess and Stax records. After some ungratifying drum lessons, when he was 13, his sister bought him a bass. “I was able to play it immediately, learned some riffs from a guitarist, and was soon practicing eight hours a day.” As a teenager, he worked with rock, blues, and acid funk bands. Very interested in making recordings, Swart rented a recording studio in the basement of a hair salon on the graveyard shift and taught himself how to engineer and produce records. After meeting his future wife and deciding to leave Boston, he spent periods living and working in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Nashville where he led the experimental jam band Funkwrench (which is a nickname for a bass). He engineered the first Pixies demos, worked with Patty Griffin off and on for 17 years, recorded with Morphine, produced and performed with cult underground art-rock band Billy Nayer Show, was part of the acid jazz group Junk/Post Junk Trio, was a founding member of the psychedelic electric blues trio SIMO, and recorded and toured with such artists as Norah Jones, The Indigo Girls, John Hiatt, and Buddy Miller. After settling back in San Francisco in 2017, Swart and publisher-producer Brian Brinkerhoff founded the Need To Know label, Skunkworks Studios, and Funkwrench Blues. Utilizing Swart's instrumental blues-oriented compositions and such talents as guitarist Rick Kirch (who worked with John Lee Hooker) and a variety of drummers, they have made recordings with over 200 notable artists. A partial list includes Guitar Shorty, Cash McCall, Fareed Haque, Jim Campilongo, John Hammond, Sonny Landreth, John Primer, Albert Lee, Vieux Farke Toure, Mr. Sipp, Tommy Castro, and Duke Robillard but that only hints at the wide variety of performers. Swart will release his newest endeavor, Funkwrench Blues—Mischief In The Musitorium, in the summer of 2025. The album features collaborations with Lenny White, Vernon Reid, Donald Harrison, Nduduzo Makhatini, Jason Marsalis, Joseph Bowie, and more.
This week on the Pod, Amy and Maya confirm they are still part boy. Then they immediately get off the rails with a deep dive on Kratom. They reminisce about when they learned what “lot lizards” were. It's a real education this week. The ladies are so excited for the return of Chi Chi's Mexican Restaurant. They plot a double date to determine if the Chi Chi's hype is warranted. We know, we know…the plate is hot. Amy packs up the cabin and is also moving her household. The packing hell is real. Why do you always get injured packing up the cabin? Amy cries about mouse poop. The ladies discuss Tyler's Dad's Toilet Theory of Responsibility. Get this: Gen Z are getting married to their best friends regardless of gender or orientation. Maya and Amy review the Lilith Fair documentary. The fashion, the feminism, the 90s. Also, can we all agree that the Indigo Girls are saints? Next, some quick Cracker Barrel talk. Then, a quick Gilmore Girls love fest. Amy reviews Charlie Sheen's book. Maya plays some audio from a Hallmark movie called Love and Birding.
We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2019 conversation with Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls. ABOUT EMILY SALIERSSinger-songwriter Emily Saliers is best known as one half of Indigo Girls, which NPR called “one of the finest folk duos of all time.” The Georgia-raised musical icon is the sole writer of some of the group's best-known titles, including “Closer to Fine,” “Hammer and a Nail,” “Galileo,” “Least Complicated,” “Power of Two,” “Get Out the Map,” and others. With fifteen studio albums to their credit, Indigo Girls are Grammy award winners and winners of the Pell Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. They've earned seven gold, four platinum, and one double platinum award for album sales and have collaborated with REM, Joan Baez, Brandi Carlile, P!nk, and Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello. In addition to her work with Indigo Girls, Saliers and her father, a retired theology professor, co-wrote the book A Song to Sing, a Life to Live: Reflections on Music as Spiritual Practice. In recent years she released her debut solo album, Murmuration Nation, and has remained an impassioned activist and advocate for causes close to her heart. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Music icons, queer trailblazers, and our heroes—Indigo Girls and Melissa Etheridge—share the wisdom, humor, and heart that have carried them through decades of music and community. We talk about faith, the power of music to heal and connect, their advice for queer kids, and the lessons they're learning from young activists. About Indigo Girls: Across four decades, 16 studio albums, and over 15 million records sold, the Grammy-winning Indigo Girls – Emily Saliers and Amy Ray – continue to blaze the trail for generations of Queer artists in the mainstream. Committed and uncompromising activists, Saliers and Ray work on issues like racial justice and reproductive rights, immigration reform, LGBTQ advocacy, education, death penalty reform, and Native American rights. Indigo Girls was the first of six consecutive Gold and/or Platinum-certified albums.Their latest record, Look Long, is a stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds the duo reunited in the studio with their strongest backing band to date. About Melissa: Melissa Etheridge stormed onto the American rock scene in 1988 with the release of her critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am. The collection featured the massive hits, "I'm the Only One" and "Come to My Window," a searing song of longing that brought Etheridge her second Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Performance. Known for her confessional lyrics and raspy, smoky vocals, Etheridge has remained one of America's favorite female singers for more than two decades. In June of 2020, Etheridge launched The Etheridge Foundation to support groundbreaking scientific research into effective new treatments for opioid use disorder. There is a new documentary out now on the history of Lilith Fair. It is really good! It touched on so many topics that are relevant to the music industry today. The artists in the documentary are so good; Sarah McLachlan, Bonnie Raitt, Erykah Badu, Sheryl Crow, Brandi Carlile, and Indigo Girls just to name a few. I wanted to bring my interview with Amy Ray of Indigo Girls to you again. It was such a treat to chat with her, and this just felt like good timing! I hope you dig it!

Today, after a brief mini-episode about Melissa Ethridge, Indigo Girls and vocal tremor (1:30), Ali and Asif discuss the new ‘Naked Gun' movie (9:24). They start off by discussing the Zucker, Abrams, Zucker movies and go into a deep dive on ‘Airplane!'. Then then go over the past ‘Naked Gun' movies and give their thoughts on the reboot, as well as stars Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson. Then since some of the stars of ‘Naked Gun' are getting up their years, in the second half, Ali asks Asif about sarcopenia aka the loss of muscle mass as you age (28:07). Asif discusses how common it is, and why we should be worried about sarcopenia as we get older. Ali then asks Asif about how it is diagnosed and Asif discusses how some simple tests in the doctor's office can help in establishing the diagnosis. Finally Asif talks about the mainstays of treatment, namely resistance training and adequate protein intake. The Wailin' Jennys have been singing together for more than two decades - recording albums, touring the world, and filling venues large and small. After all these years, the trio—Ruth Moody, Heather Masse, and Nicky Mehta—have reached both a plateau and an inflection point. What's it like for a musical group that's been together for that long; for singers who've found such perfect vocal harmony for one another? How do they each think of songwriting, and of creative work in general? On their recent west coast tour, they stopped by the studio for a chat about those things and more.THE WAILIN' JENNYS ARE:Ruth Moody - Banjo, Guitar, VocalsNicky Mehta - Guitar, Drums, VocalsHeather Masse - Bass, VocalsFeaturing excerpts from the Jennys' albums Bright Morning Stars, iTunes Session - EP, 40 Days, and FirecrackerFEATURED/DISCUSSED:"Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Jim Steinman, sung by Bonnie Tyler and Rory Dodd"Paradise by the Dashboard Light," "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)," "Objects in the Rearview Mirror May Appear Closer Than They Are" - by Jim Steinman sung by Meat Loaf"Closer To Fine" and "Love's Recovery" by Indigo Girls from Indigo Girls, 1989Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert, 2016Kirk's essay on creativity, "Follow The Spark"Jeff Tweedy talking songwriting on The Ezra Klein Show"What Am I Here For" by Jade BirdMUSIC PICKS:Heather: Bonny Light Horseman, Keep Me On Your Mind/Set You Free, 2024Ruth: Aaron Neville, "Louisiana 1927"Nicky: Afghan Whigs, Black Love ----LINKS-----

(Editor's Note: Welcome to our Reissue series! For the past several weeks, Basic Folk has been digging back into the archives and reposting some of our favorite episodes alongside new introductions commenting on what it's like to listen back. This is our last Reissue for now, so please enjoy! This episode featuring separate interviews with The Indigo Girls (Amy Ray and Emily Saliers) and host Cindy Howes was originally posted winter 2019.)Back in 2019, my now-wife and I attended the inaugural Girls Just Wanna Weekend in Cancun, Mexico, which featured an all-women lineup curated and hosted by Brandi Carlile. I was lucky enough to be able to interview The Indigo Girls there in two separate solo interviews. I still feel nervous thinking about the scene of talking to both Amy Ray and Emily Saliers in each of their (very nice!) hotel suites on my new little Shure mic that connected to my phone. Lucky for me, both Amy and Emily were really into my new mic, so it served as the best possible ice breaker. Each were very generous with their time and with their answers to my unorthodox questions.First I got to speak to Amy Ray, who talks about growing up in a conservative, modest Southern family with her radiologist father and a smart, scholarship-attaining mother. She speaks to how her suburban upbringing and intake of conservative values of the South has influenced her identity. She shares about her father's deep involvement in community service and the impact of her father's generosity on her own activism. I also asked Amy about her sense of fashion and how it challenges traditional gender norms. She talks about her love for creative clothing and that her historically unconventional approach to style serves as a form of activism.Next up: Emily Saliers. She talks about her relationship with guitar playing, tracing it back to childhood lessons at the YMCA and musical members of her family. She also points out how playing electric guitar changed the game, particularly through collaborations with Amy Ray. Emily talks about first solo album, 'Murmuration Nation.' Released in 2017, it took a long time to come to fruition due to challenges and emotional hurdles she faced during its creation. Lyris Hung, longtime Indigo Girls friend, collaborator, and producer – including on that solo album – brought her expansive musical imagination and played a critical role in shaping the record. We also get into Emily's love for hip-hop, specifically political hip-hop, and the profound impact the genre has had on her. Emily ends with talking about her other great love, food, by drawing parallels between the communal nature of music and cuisine, illustrating how both bring people together in meaningful ways.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Interested in sponsoring us? What happens when a voice emerges? What happens when one is lost? Is something gained? A couple months ago, Lulu guest edited an issue of the nature magazine Orion. She called the issue “Queer Planet: A Celebration of Biodiversity,” and it was a wide-ranging celebration of queerness in nature. It featured work by amazing writers like Ocean Vuong, Kristen Arnett, Carmen Maria Machado and adrienne maree brown, among many others. But one piece in particular struck Lulu as something that was really meant to be made into audio, an essay called “Key Changes,” by the writer Sabrina Imbler. If their name sounds familiar, it might be because they've been on the show before. In this episode, we bring you Sabrina's essay – which takes us from the beginning of time, to a field of crickets, to a karaoke bar – read by the phenomenal actor Becca Blackwell, and scored by our director of sound design Dylan Keefe.
