The saying 'never meet your heroes' does not apply to the Indigo Girls. Amy Ray and Emily Sailers will not disappoint, for they are as kind as they are talented. Last week, they left for a significant, multi-city tour that will run through the fall, yet they took the time to come to the WABE studio and record an interview with Lois to air during her final days at WABE before her retirement. This intimate conversation was recorded as part of Lois's last week series, in which she speaks to some of her past favorite guests.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A beautiful song that subtly obscures its musical roots by an artist with surprising connections to the genre, and a cover that goes all in on everything. I Can See Clearly Now, originally by Johnny Nash, covered by Hothouse Flowers. Outro music is Closer to Fine by Indigo Girls, and we guarantee it will all make sense.
WBCQ/The Planet airdate - 6/7/25 Interview conducted - 5/29/25 Welcome to Fluxedo Junction!. Each episode, we bring you the best music from all genres worldwide, and this episode, we'll be speaking with acclaimed violinist, composer, and vocalist Scarlet Rivera. Grammy-nominated Scarlet Rivera burned a hole in the fabric of rock history as a pioneer of the electric violin. While classically trained, Scarlet came to prominence as an integral part of Bob Dylan's 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour and the subsequent release of the legendary album Desire, which charted at number one and sold certified double platinum. She has also worked with many other of the world's most well-known artists, including Brandi Carlile, Emmylou Harris, Indigo Girls, Tracy Chapman, John Mayall, Keb Mo, Robbie Krieger, and Albert Lee. Her new album, Circle Back, will be released later this year, and she'll be performing in Roslyn, New York, on June 19 at the legendary venue My Father's Place. John Keane is a veteran producer, engineer, and musician who has been involved in the creation of many gold and multi-platinum records. He is best known for his work with R.E.M, Widespread Panic, The Indigo Girls, Robert Earl Keen, and too many more to list. He started John Keane Studios in Athens, Georgia in 1981. John became an expert on subjects such as record production, home recording, and Pro Tools. Not only did John teach a Pro Tools course for the University of Georgia's Music Business Program, but he is also the author of the popular Pro Tools book, The Musician's Guide to Pro Tools (McGraw-Hill). He has also created Online Pro Tools, a series of Pro Tools instructional videos.John was so well known for his studio work here in Athens, many of the artist he worked with would bring other musicians to record with John as well. David Barbee well known for his studio work in Athens as well, actually learned in Keane's studio. The tales that come out of those studios during the late 70's and 80's continue to flow through the music community as cherished memories still today. John still continues with the “newbies” coming out of Athens today with the same vigor as those days. He continues to strive to keep them relevant to the times but still keeping the “Athens Vibe” alive. My conversation with John was one for the top shelf on my Podcast, AthCastMusic and one that will have a special place in my memories. What happens when a voice emerges? What happens when one is lost? Is something gained? A couple months ago, Lulu guest edited an issue of the nature magazine Orion. She called the issue “Queer Planet: A Celebration of Biodiversity,” and it was a wide-ranging celebration of queerness in nature. It featured work by amazing writers like Ocean Vuong, Kristen Arnett, Carmen Maria Machado and adrienne maree brown, among many others. But one piece in particular struck Lulu as something that was really meant to be made into audio, an essay called “Key Changes,” by the writer Sabrina Imbler. If their name sounds familiar, it might be because they've been on the show before. In this episode, we bring you Sabrina's essay – which takes us from the beginning of time, to a field of crickets, to a karaoke bar – read by the phenomenal actor Becca Blackwell, and scored by our director of sound design Dylan Keefe. Stay to the end for a special surprise … from Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls!Special thanks to Jay Gallagher from UC Davis.EPISODE CREDITS: Reported by - Sabrina ImblerProduced by - Annie McEwen and Pat Walterswith help from - Maria Paz GutiérrezOriginal music from - Dylan KeefeFact-checking by - Kim Schmidtand Edited by - Tajja Isen and Pat WaltersEPISODE CITATIONS:Articles - Check out Queer Planet: A Celebration of Biodiversity, Orion Magazine (Spring 2025)Read Sabrina Imbler's original essay, “Key Changes,” Orion Magazine (Spring 2025)Read Lulu Miller's mini-essay, “Astonishing Immobility,” Orion Magazine (Spring 2025)Check out Sabrina Imbler's Defector column Creaturefector all about animalsAudio - Listen to Amy Ray's song “Chuck Will's Widow” from her solo album If It All Goes SouthBooks - How Far the Light Reaches: A Life in Ten Sea Creatures, by Sabrina ImblerSignup for our newsletter!! Episode Description: Since 1985, Emily Sailers and Amy Ray have been known as the Indigo Girls, and they've never once stopped making music or sharing their message of acceptance. The two met when they were kids in Decatur, Georgia,, and once they started playing together in high school, it didn't take long for their unique sound to find an audience—first regionally, then nationally, and eventually worldwide. Last summer, when their hit song “Closer to Fine” was featured prominently in the movie Barbie, they seemed to catch fire with a whole new generation, and now they're back with a slew of new projects. A documentary called It's Only Life After All delves into their lives, their struggles, and their activism; a rom-com called Glitter & Doom is set to their music; and of course there's some new songs. Sid also asks about Emily's longtime passion for food and cooking, the bar in Atlanta where they got their start, and what it's been like to endure as openly gay artists in the South and the music industry. Glennon admits something that she's never told anyone before. 4. Amy and Abby agree on the shared cost of internalized homophobia and misogyny. About Indigo Girls: One of the most successful folk duos in history – Amy Ray and Emily Sailers aka THE INDIGO GIRLS – has recorded 16 albums and sold over 15 million records. Committed and uncompromising activists, they work on issues like immigration reform, LGBTQ advocacy, education, and death penalty reform. They are co-founders of Honor the Earth, a non-profit dedicated to the survival of sustainable Native communities, Indigenous environmental justice, and green energy solutions. Their latest record, Look Long is a stirring and eclectic collection of songs that finds Indigo Girls reunited in the studio with their strongest backing band to date. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Generations of sewingDaniela Bianchini is a Minneapolis mosaic artist who is originally from Argentina. She's drawn toward an exhibit at CLUES' Latino Art Gallery in St. Paul that celebrates the art of sewing as it is passed through generations of women. The exhibit, by Columbian-Minnesotan artist Adriana Gordillo and Nena's Atelier, is titled “Connective Thread.” It opens Friday, March 14 and runs through May 14. There is a Cafecito de Hermanas (Coffee with Sisters) on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to noon that offers a time for workshops, resources, music and community connection. Register here. Daniela says: I feel very related to it. We all in Latin America grew up seeing our grandmas and our mothers sewing. I've seen a couple of images that the artists have been posting in their social media: collages of different compositions of fabric and flowers and needles, and things that you see that represent the art of sewing. The community will be able to write something: their emotions, or their feelings about the exhibition, and some sort of petals that will then be sewed together and put in a dress.— Daniela BianchiniCelebrating Latinos on BroadwayAnne Sawyer, executive director of Art Start in St. Paul, is looking forward to seeing Teatro Del Pueblo's “Voces Latinas: A Broadway Musical Revue.” Directed by Mark Valdez of Mixed Blood Theatre with musical direction by Brenda Varga, “Voces Latinas” celebrates Latino artists' contributions to Broadway through the years. Shows are at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, beginning Friday, March 14 and continuing Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 and Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. Anne says: If you love musicals, this production promises to be so much fun. Teatro del Pueblo's performers will sing a curated, eclectic collection of songs that is a take on the Latino experience on Broadway. There are some older, really iconic numbers made famous by the likes of Chita Rivera, such as “A Boy Like That” from “West Side Story” and “Bye, Bye Birdie's” “An English Teacher.” But there's also pieces like Selena's "Amor Prohibido” and the “Hamilton” song “Dear Theodosia,” which was sung on Broadway by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. What is so engaging about this production is the range of musical styles and how they encompass so many themes, societal differences and passionate love, pride in one's mother country, family and the struggle to survive. It's a show that will take you on a real roller coaster of emotion.— Anne SawyerLilith Fair lives on Laura Hotvet loves the cover band Pandora's Other Box, and she's excited for their upcoming concert, which feels tailor-made for Women's Month. “The Legacy of Lilith Fair” celebrates the female musicians who took part in Lilith Fair in the late 1990s, and the artists who have followed in their footsteps. The concert takes place at the Women's Club of Minneapolis on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. Laura says: Pandora's Other Box is one of the most energetic and fun-to-listen-to, fun-to-dance-to, talented pop rock cover bands in the Twin Cities. The show features songs from [Lilith Fair concert tour] founder Sarah McLachlan, along with Paula Cole, Sheryl Crow, The Chicks, Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Chapman, Pat Benatar, Indigo Girls and more. The second act will journey through the 25 years that followed, and this will be showcasing more current artists who benefited from the bravery of the original female pioneers in the Lilith era, such as Brandi Carlile, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Paramore and more.— Laura Hotvet
Just a few days before he took off for Hong Kong, Dan talks to folk singer-songwriter Andrea Nardello at her kitchen table in Philadelphia. Andrea talks about growing up the tomboy sister of older brothers just over the bridge in New Jersey, coming out of her shell to perform in college, and getting her start on the road while living in Atlanta at the beginning of her career. They discuss touring life, the grind of producing content, the ups and downs of booking even in your own hometown, their mutual love of Ani Difranco and the Indigo Girls, and Andrea's biggest aspiration: to be a "legacy opener". Andrea Nardello's newest EP, 'Rise', is out now wherever you get your digital music, and on CD via her website. Follow her on IG to stay up to date with upcoming shows and releases. In the opening, I talk about an event happening this weekend in Bethlehem, PA and in the Philly suburbs. Listen To the Dissonance is an annual concert series put on by Your Next Favorite Band (our sister podcast up in the Lehigh Valley), focusing on intimate performances from songwriters speaking about mental health awareness. This year, there are two opportunities to see it: 2/28 in Bethlehem at the Icehouse, and 3/1 in Wayne at 118 North. Both shows will feature performances from Jon Worthy, Brittany Ann Tranbaugh, A Day Without Love, and Cass Noelle. Come and be a part of this movement to de-stigmatize and promote mental health awareness through the universal language of music. Tickets are available, and you can get more information at Your Next Favorite Band's website.
This week's episode is a reading of a previously published Substack letter titled “Get Out the Map,” after one of my favorite Indigo Girls songs. In this episode, I'll talk about my life-long desire to escape, showing up at my ex's house in the middle of the night, and finding the balance between exploration and exercising power; the importance of being alone and being home. What it might mean to really be somewhere. I dunno! You can also watch this episode on my YouTube channel here. Holding Space? What about Thickening Space?? Inspired by The Muppets, Ani DiFranco, Sinead O'Connor, and Joni Mitchell- queer music icon - B*TCH is here to talk about her musical memoir, B*TCHCRAFT at wild project. Sarah and B*TCH talk about political art, musical theatre, "thickening space" in acting class, violin, One Long Earring, and much much more! B*tch (Creator/Performer) is a longstanding queer music icon who Yahoo Entertainment called “a feminist force that the world needs now more than ever” when she released “B*tchcraft,” her 9th studio album, on the legendary label Kill Rock Stars in 2022. With her signature electric violin and lyrical smarts front and center over huge beats and deep synths, B*tch coined the genre “Poet Pop.” “B*tchcraft is a masterpiece,” said Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls. Both Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco took B*tch on tour as their opener. Joey Soloway (Transparent) directed the music video for “Easy Target.” B*tch first achieved notoriety as one half of the folk duo B*tch and Animal. The duo had met in acting school at DePaul University (formerly the Goodman School of Drama), where B*tch was the recipient of the Merit Scholarship for two years in a row. They toured with Ani DiFranco, and released two albums on her label Righteous Babe Records, and were nominated for a GLAAD Media award in 2003. In 2004, B*tch went solo, and shared stages with the Indigo Girls, acted in John Cameron Mitchell's film “Shortbus,” co-wrote a song with Margaret Cho, and produced two albums of her elder and folk hero Ferron. Recently, she played a role in the new Audible podcast of Alison Bechdel's “Dykes To Watch Out For,” alongside Jane Lynch, Carrie Brownstein and Roxane Gay. The series was directed by Leigh Silverman (Suffs, Violet, Well), and Bitch co-wrote a song for it with Faith Soloway (Transparent, A Transparent Musical). We really enjoyed talking with Mary Bragg about her new EP “The Quiet One” OUT TOMORROW (1/23/25). We got really deep chatting about the importance of listening, getting lost in theactivity of writing, accepting your inner critic rather than fighting it, and so much more including her recent wedding! An artist, songwriter, producer, and engineer, the Swainsboro, Georgia native began to fully come into her own with her 2017 record, the critically acclaimed Lucky Strike. Hailedas a “sublime distilling of Southern grit” by NPR, the album dipped its toes into a kind of radical honesty that Bragg had only previously hinted at, which she then committed further to for her self-titled album, Mary Bragg, released in 2022. Covering heartbreak, divorce, coming out, grief, and self-actualization, Mary Bragg depicts themes centered around the life tenets most important to her – love, kindness, and honesty. Bragg tours extensively, both with her band and solo, playing headline and festival dates to ever-growing audiences across the US, Canada, and Europe. Since earning her Master of Artsin Songwriting and Production at BerkleeNYC, Bragg just released a lush new EP, Tie Me to You, and hints at a forthcoming full-length record. Having opened tours for the Indigo Girls, The Secret Sisters, Mick Flannery, and even Miranda Lambert, Bragg is gearing up for a robust chapter, because, as Saving Country Music said, “Watch out.” Check Mary out here— Website: marybragg.com Instagram: marybragg Facebook: Mary Lowman-Bragg YouTube: Mary Bragg music

When you hear the term "singer-songwriter", what the first thing that comes to mind? Sensitive '70s long-haired hippies strolling through Laurel Canyon with an acoustic guitar? Us too. But, amidst the explosion of alternative rock, grunge, Britpop, electronic music, and hip-hop, the '90s were a fruitful decade for the singer-songwriter. This crop of artists drew from a stylistically varied palette, but played music with passion, heart, honesty, vulnerability, and a knack for poetic storytelling. One of the most promising singer-songwriters of the '90s was this week's Third Lad Milo Binder, the musical alter ego of Todd Lawrence. Milo Binder's self-titled debut album was released in 1991 to universal critical acclaim, featuring a respected roster of legendary musicians including Garth Hudson from The Band, Sneaky Pete from Flying Burrito Brothers, and Victoria Williams, as well as studio pros like the late David Vaught (Rosebud, Tom Waits, Roger McGuinn) and Duane Jarvis. Milo was profiled on NPR, received folk radio airplay, and shared the stage with a range of artists from the Indigo Girls to Soundgarden. Naturally, with that auspicious debut, Milo Binder went on to a long, fruitful musical career. Right? Well, a series of life changing events caused Milo Binder to hang up the guitar and transform back into mild-mannered Todd Lawrence for the better part of 33 years (the Superman analogy isn't all that hyperbolic...you'll find out that Todd is pretty much a super hero!). Other than the occasional live appearance and 2019's wonderfully whimsical psychedelic pop fable Paisley and the Firefly written and recorded with his longtime musical partner and best friend Willie Aron, a true follow up to the Milo Binder album never materialized. Until now. August 2024 heralded the return of Milo Binder with his (verrrrrry) long awaited second album, The Unspeakable Milo Binder, on Heyday Again (distributed by Real Gone Music). It finds our hero not only in fine form, but it's a record that equals or surpasses its predecessor. Listen to Milo's remarkable story, plus: What '90s singer-songwriter was a triple crossover...but with three different albums? Where did Uncle Gregg bomb doing stand up? Who was Milo's toughest audience? What group of people did Cher offend? (According to our official staff fact checker, aka Brett's wife, it's NOT who we said it was.) Everyone knows the Indigo Girls — or at least they think they do. The indie rock duo hit the music scene in the early 80's, and people were quick to try to categorize them.

My guest today is just fun to talk with. It's Jeff Fielder. I first heard Jeff when researching for Mark Lanegan's episode. He's worked with so many people and made so much great music that it's almost unbelievable. But he started off admiring rock before playing any. He grew up in Alaska with much older brothers. Long haired, Les Paul playing, Barracuda driving brothers. So Jeff got into music early. In fact, he started gigging before middle school in a 17 piece jazz band led by his future middle school music teacher and at one point, probably took one guitar lesson from the devil. His family moved to Seattle in the heyday of grunge. He played in a few bands that should have gone farther than they did. He started hanging out with Dave Abruzzesse and getting into session work. But after a while he put down music completely and became a craft bartender. But working with one artist brought him back. That's when things started to snowball and they haven't stopped. He's played with Mark Lanegan, Amy Ray, Indigo Girls, Satchel, and Painted Shield. And despite his best efforts to the contrary, has made beautiful music with his wife, Tekla Waterfield. Most recently, he's recorded a wild cover of Megadeth's Peace Sells…But Who's Buying with some amazing musicians, including mutual friend, Mike Squires for Couch Riffs. Keep an eye out for Jeff on the road with Duff McKagan and Indigo Girls. Follow him on Facebook and Instagram @jefffieldermusic. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on Instagram & X.
