4.3.2023 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: Angel Reese Double Standard, MLK's Mason Temple Speech 55th Anniversary, IL Chicago Mayoral Election New York City is preparing for Trump's arraignment and the mayor as a stern warning for anyone coming to the city to start trouble. The Louisiana State University women's Basketball team won the NCAA Title on Saturday with Most Outstanding player Angel Reese leading the way. Still, instead of congratulations, she has received thousands of social media posts blasting her behavior as classless. We will break down the acceptability politics black athletes are expected to play and how the double standards persist in all sports. Tomorrow marks the 55th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Beyond Vietnam" speech at Riverside Church condemning the Vietnam War. We will commemorate his legacy and speak to the author of Martin Luther King's Biblical Epic, Keith Miller, about his historic speech just one year before his assassination. Chicago has a Mayoral runoff election tomorrow. We will speak with Cook County Commissioner and Mayoral Candidate Brandon Johnson III about how he plans on changing Chicago for the better if he wins.Download the #BlackStarNetwork app on iOS, AppleTV, Android, Android TV, Roku, FireTV, SamsungTV and XBox  http://www.blackstarnetwork.com #RolandMartinUnfiltered and the #BlackStarNetwork are news reporting platforms covered under Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a civil rights leader who left a lasting legacy. He led the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott, helped organize the 1963 nonviolent protests in Birmingham, Alabama, and helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, DC, where he delivered his famous August 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech -- where he said: "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." On April 3, 1968, Dr. King gave his last speech called "I have been to the Mountaintop" in support of striking sanitation workers. Following is a link of that speech at Mason Temple in Memphis, Tennessee where Dr. King calls for unity, economic actions, boycotts, and nonviolent protest, while challenging the United States to live up to its ideals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC6qxf3b3FI Dr. King was assassinated the day after that speech. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sabah-fakhoury/message

On April 3, 1968 the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was in Memphis, Tennessee to lend his support, his help, and his leadership to the Memphis Sanitation Worker’s Strike. That February, Black sanitation workers had walked off the job because two of them had been crushed to death in a garbage compacting truck. There was already unrest and tension because the Black workers were paid poorly and treated even worse. They deserved a raise and better working conditions. On March 28, Dr. King participated in a huge Memphis march, but to his dismay, it ended in violence. With the intention of leading a peaceful march later that week, Dr. King returned to Memphis on April 3. That evening, he spoke at Mason Temple, then the Church of God in Christ world headquarters. As he had throughout the tumultuous struggle for Civil Rights during the 1950s and 60s, Dr. King called on America and Americans to live up to the promise of our founding creed, and to honor the words of our founding documents. As Dr. King came to the end of his speech, he talked about his 1958 attempted assassination, the bomb threat that delayed his plane that day, and threats made against him in Memphis. As a storm raged outside the packed church, Dr. King prophetically spoke of his own mortality. The next day, Thursday, April 4, 1968, Dr. King was at the Lorraine Motel with aides and friends; Rev. Billie Kyles of Memphis arrived to take the group to dinner. At about 6 p.m. Dr. King stood with Rev. Kyles on the balcony outside his Room 306 and told musician Ben Branch to be sure to play “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” at the rally that evening. Then, as Dr. King leaned over the balcony railing to speak with his young aide Reverend Jesse Jackson he was struck down by an assassin’s bullet. He was 39 years old.Later that evening, in Indianapolis, Indiana – presidential candidate, Senator Robert Kennedy delivered the news of Dr. King’s murder to a crowd of black and white supporters.Exactly two months later Robert Kennedy himself was assassinated in Los Angeles after winning the California Democratic presidential primary. With that, let’s listen to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “I've Been to the Mountain Top” in its entirety.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/words-matter. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

content: Mar 8, 2019 · podcast: Mar 8, 2020 Audio (MP3): 20190308 - A view from the mountaintop Whenever I’m in the kitchen cooking I always turn on the television. The TV gets a bad rap but there are good things on, it just depends on what we watch. Believe it or not television is filled with spiritual insights, spiritual motivators, spiritual empowerment. So then a couple nights ago I was watching a documentary on Martin Luther King Jr. The documentary was more about his assassin, the racial tension, and the like. The whole vibe of that era was unnerving my kitchen as I cooked up the French Toast. Sprinkled throughout, though, were snippets of speeches and conversations with MLK Jr. And for that I am grateful. It kept the world from going too dark. The night before he was killed, MLK Jr gave his famous rainy church speech in Memphis, Tennessee. I’m sure you’ve all heard it before. Death seem to be on his mind but he wasn’t afraid. Well I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn't matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody I’d like to live. A long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And he’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promise land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promise land. Just to put this out there before I say any more, I’m not trying to expand or clarify what MLK Jr said at the Mason Temple. I’m not in the same league by any means and will often want to rip the arms off gas pumps. These are just feelings and thoughts I had while listening during and not-thinking afterward. Once we’ve been to the mountaintop life will never look the same. It’ll never *be* the same. The promised land isn’t something in the hereafter, it’s looking out at the world from a different point of view. Right now. Wherever we are. A view that’s farther than we can see. Both light and dark. Both sunshine and rain, war and peace. There’s the fabled heaven and hell laid out before us if you ever wondered how that all worked. And that mountaintop view will change our mission in life. For some of us it will alter our course only slightly and for others it’ll be a profound re-dedication of one’s life work. We’ll want to do God’s will, whatever that means to us. And life will be okay no matter what. Even if we have to go to hell for a while. Not many people get to stay on the mountaintop either. We have to come down and tend to real life. But we have to hold onto that view as best we can, never let it fade from our hearts. Or not fade for long. If the view has slipped from our minds, we know the path to the promised land. #photos #advancedsoul #tv #diariespodcast Shawneemicks · Mar 8, 2019 at 6:50 pm Dude, you blow my mind sometimes. Hello All - 10 Episodes Down, A Zillion to go!Intro:This week was going to be a look back on the first nine episodes and some deep and shallow thoughts on fame from me, but early last week, something very 15-minutes-y happened, that really got rolling in the wee small hours of Wednesday, July 27th, 2016.Søren Mason Temple is someone I know from, you know, around. We’re IRL friends and Facebook friends, have a bunch of friends in common here in the 413, bump into each other a few times a year. We used to compete in a monthly trivia night at the bar. Dave Rothstein is a friend of Soren’s whom I’ve met only once before. Søren is a painter. Dave is a snow sculptor, hobbyist photographer, and lawyer. A couple weeks ago, the pair collaborated for a couple days on a time-lapse photo video of Søren making a painting. Then they posted the resulting 16-second video on Twitter. They can tell you the rest.We talked on Saturday, over the kitchen table in Søren’s parents’ art-filled, comfy, Western Mass country house.*** Outro:I really want to thank both Søren and Dave for getting together with me so quickly, while the experience was still, as you can hear, still fresh. Especially Søren, who clearly battled some demons to start talking on that mic. Her unrestrainable smile and renewed delight-mixed-with-dread-mixed-with-astonishment every time she talked about their bizarre week was just the best.Søren and Dave’s experience points out in a very immediate and local way is that being seen, by others, in and of itself, is a very mixed bag, often desired, then undesired, often uncomfortable, unquenchable, useful or destructive, sometimes thrilling, dreadful, the list goes on.You can find Søren Mason Temple on Instagram @siren74 and Dave Rothstein @snowsculpt. You can find links to their time-lapse project video - that’s now up to only 2.7 Million views - the MassLive article about them that they mentioned and other tasty tidbits at 15minutesjamieberger.com or by searching for 15 Minutes and my name to find our Facebook page, where I put weekly info as well as smaller daily find. Among recent posts are a youtube video of Russell Brand talking about fame, and a recent episode of NPR’s On Point that featured Ryan Holiday, author of the new book, Ego is the Enemy. On both the Facebook page and site, you can also find a guide on how to rate and review a podcast on iTunes, because I know you’ve been wondering that, and you can find us. If you’re enjoying this, please take just a couple minutes to rate and maybe even review us on iTunes - once again, it really really means a lot not just to my ego, but to keeping this show going, in many ways. We're also on twitter and instagram at @15minsjamieb.Thanks for listening See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
