A major theme that reappears in episode after episode of Art Restart is the fact that audiences/consumers, institutions/businesses and sometimes even artists themselves often fail to recognize that art is labor, not a pastime or an unconventional way to earn a living. A recent labor action by America's premier ballet company served as a fresh reminder. On February 6 of this year, by an overwhelming majority, the dancers and stage managers of American Ballet Theatre voted to authorize a strike. Among their demands were an increase in wages that had been frozen since the Great Recession of 2008 as well as an adjustment to their working hours. Represented by their union, AGMA (American Guild of Musical Artists), after approximately three weeks of negotiations, the ABT company members and management were able to reach an agreement and avert a strike. The terms of the new agreement include cost-of-living increases of between 9 and 19% (varying by rank) across three years, their workday being shifted a half-hour earlier and reduced by one half-hour on Saturdays and new parental-leave benefits and a commitment to keep pregnant dancers on contract until the time of the dancer's choosing. In this interview, Art Restart speaks with Griff Braun, AGMA's national organizing director, who was himself once an ABT company member. He speaks about the nuts and bolts of how and why dancers unionize and describes the challenges and opportunities of organizing as an artist in 2024 America. https://www.musicalartists.org/griff-braun-national-organizing-director-professional-bio/

In the wake of the Dobbs decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade, abortion access has become dependent on one's location. Accessing an abortion involves considerations like employer-sponsored healthcare coverage and taking time off of work. Barbara Camens, union side labor attorney, sits down to talk with us about the importance of access to affordable, comprehensive reproductive health care as part of the collective bargaining process. 25 million women if reproductive age now live in a state that bans or severely restricts abortion. In order to access abortion care, people need to travel to other states, which includes taking time off of work, possibly taking time off of work on short notice, incurring significantly higher medical costs under employer healthcare coverage, and more. As terms and conditions of employment, this means employers should be required to bargain in good faith with unions. Hello, and welcome to the Babylon Podject. We are not talking about any episodes today, because earlier this week SAG-AFTRA released new guides to podcasters with relation to their strike. The guidelines for this rule defines rewatch podcasts as struck work. This is confusing because as both fanwork and critical content, we would not think this applies to us, but the wording of the statement does not include any exceptions. Another podcast shared communication with us from a SAG representative that states that the discussion of struck productions (including older shows like we cover here) is considered promotional and thus while we are not SAG-AFTRA members, promotional material would be considered scab work.As we wish to show solidarity with both striking guilds, we encourage you to still enjoy watching and reading what you like, but any release of new episodes will have to avoid struck work until an equitable agreement is reached.Where that leaves us is in a pickle. There's a number of things that we are excited about, and we have almost a dozen episodes in the can right now for our next series, but those will have to wait until we feel that releasing those episodes would not be a striking activity. Until then, we are going to get ~experimental~ and try covering some non-television and movie properties. We'll see how that goes, and hopefully we'll be back to doing our normal thing before I'm hate-reading bad Avengers comics. So, until next time...we stand with SAG-AFTRA and the Writer's Guild...be seeing you. And if you want a taste of what we're doing next, here's the music for our next series…whenever that happens.Music courtesy of audioquinn.

The WGA has been on strike for almost 80 days, just 20 shy of how long the strike of 2007-2008 lasted, and as of last week, SAG-AFTRA joined the picket line as the AMPTP refused to concede in contract negotions. To say that this is a watershed moment is some how not strong enough. As the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike to ensure fair wages and working conditions and protect their craft from AI, we wanted to do a very special episode to talk about what you can do to help support the unions working for a better life. For episode 145, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes (Steve Prusakowski once again has the week off from on-air duties, as he was handling Emmy nominations yesterday morning). In addition, we talk about Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One a bunch (my review is here), as well as our franchise rankings (mine is here). It's a mix of raging at corporate A.I. related greed and our admiration for the Tom Cruise action franchise. As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 145th one to date (here's to many more). As a union movement, the New York State AFL-CIO has been working with its affiliates to address climate change in a responsible way. On the latest Union Strong podcast, we discuss thermal energy networks and their role in decarbonizing state-owned campuses and facilities while creating a pipeline to union jobs. Our guest is John Murphy, International Representative for the United Association of Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Sprinkler Fitters in NY. Visit UpgradeNY.org to learn more. See Upgrade NY's budget letter to Governor Hochul.
Addressing climate change presents all sorts of opportunities for workers and unions, but it also puts many good union jobs at risk of elimination which is why the state must maintain flexibility. As New York State continues to work to reduce emissions and combat climate change, the New York State AFL-CIO has made clear that protecting the rights and interests of workers and their unions must be a priority. On the latest Union Strong podcast, David Wasiura, Assistant to the Director of United Steel Workers District 4 discusses the importance of keeping good union manufacturing jobs in New York State.
Combating climate change while protecting workers is a top priority for the union movement, which is why the New York State AFL-CIO along with our affiliates have been involved every step of the way as the state moves toward achieving its ambitious clean energy goals laid out in the 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA). On the latest Union Strong podcast, New York State AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento discusses how the state can address climate change in a responsible way.
Healthcare workers who are members of 1199 SEIU filled the 17,000-seat MVP arena in downtown Albany this week for one of the largest rallies in the state in decades. On the latest Union Strong podcast, we take you inside the arena and hear from a registered nurse who talks about the dire state of our healthcare system.
An executive budget proposal aimed at improving the recruitment and retention of volunteer firefighters may have good intentions, but could have unintended consequences that jeopardize public safety. Today's podcast is a candid conversation with Mike Monroe, the Chief of Staff to North America's Building Trades Unions, a labor organization representing more than 3 million construction workers, composed of 14 national and international unions. Prior to joining NABTU, Mike served as the Political Director for Labor on Hillary Clinton's 2008 Presidential Campaign, and is a passionate and successful advocate for the Labor Movement in America. The pandemic really opened our eyes to the essential nature of the workers of America, and how great the divide is between those who own the corporations and those who work for them. However, with the combined efforts of unions to represent the people, and a government that respects and supports the importance of unions, we can truly begin to reverse the ever widening gap between the “haves” and the “have nots” in this country. America doesn't need to be like this. We must grow our middle class again, and to do that we need to look to the power of organized labor and the resurgence of the respect for the American worker.
