Recorded on 03/17/2025. In this episode, we dive into the latest political currents, starting with the recent Senate passage of the continuing resolution that staved off a government shutdown, though not without stirring some unrest among Democrats. We unpack the growing divide within the Democratic Party, spotlighting tensions between Chuck Schumer and the more progressive wing, including figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Jasmine Crockett. The conversation shifts to surprising voices of reason, like John Fetterman, and the stubborn opposition from senators like Mazie Hirono to practical bipartisan efforts, such as Bernie Moreno's asylum bill. We also touch on the bizarre wave of attacks on Tesla dealerships, a symbolic jab at Elon Musk that's backfiring by drawing sympathy rather than scorn. Finally, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King's 1967 "Beyond Vietnam" speech, we reflect on a potential revolution of values in America—shifting away from government overreach and toward community-driven solutions, even if it means sacrificing cheaper prices for stronger local economies.subscribe for exclusive content or donateReferences:Fetterman SLAMMED by fellow Dem: 'He's not the one to talk'Bernie Moreno Spars With Mazie Hirono Over Border Security LegislationTesla faces vandalism and protests amid backlash against Elon MuskA Timeline Of Elon Musk's Terrible 24 HoursMLK: Beyond Vietnam - A Time to Break SilenceContact Us:Frank: contempconserv@gmail.comReid: contempconserv2@gmail.comFollow Us on Twitter/ X @contempconservFollow Us on Truth Social @contempconservOur Links:ContemporaryConservative.netConservative Conversations PodcastConservative Conversations on YoutubeThe Wicky Wacky Radio Show PodcastThe Wicky Wacky Radio Show on YoutubeSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/contemporary-conservative-audio/exclusive-content

Seattle Mennonite Church Sermons

Sabbath was to be the fountain around which the garden of all public life and policy grew in ancient Israel. On six days the people were to work, tending that garden, ensuring its health and growth and accessibility to all people, and on the seventh day they were to participate in the proper end and fulfillment of all work: reception of the fruits of perfect sanctuary. In rabbinic tradition, it is taught that if the people observe Sabbath completely and perfectly even once, the Messiah will come. The world where the sanctuary of Sabbath is truly established is the Promised Land.Sermon begins at minute marker 5:07 Luke 6:1–16ResourcesHeschel, Abraham Joshua. “The Sabbath”.Martin Luther King, Jr., "Beyond Vietnam": Speech at Riverside Church Meeting, New York, N.Y., April 4, 1967. The world is upside-down and on fire. Everyone is killing each other, being nasty to each other, violence is begetting violence, bombs are falling everywhere…and our tax dollars are footing the bill. It's making us go mad—and enough is enough. We're stumped, we're at a loss, so today we're going to be leaning on King. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote a great map on how to approach conflict resolution, and on that map is his speech Beyond Vietnam. We're going to take a look at this speech, and we'll be treating it similarly to how we do other scripture and letters in the Bible. Why? Why not! We don't see any reason why we shouldn't treat it that way. King refers to speaking up and speaking out, and to peacekeeping as a vocation of agony—and here at Revolution we couldn't agree more. It's tiresome, constant, and unceasing. But it's part of the work and it comes with the territory. Can you have grace without social justice? And can you have social justice without grace? Because this is part of it, right? They go hand in hand and should be talked about equally. We are all accepted as we are, not how we should be. And if we don't grow to learn that and see that in others than have we arrived at spiritual death? Can this part of the work, speaking out against the dangers of people wielding power without compassion, be the mustard seed of faith and hope that we need? This is a good one folks, and Jay pours his guts into it. Jay is a punk rocker at heart, always has been and always will be, so when he gets to talking about Social Justice and combines it with his calling to show and teach grace, it's hard hitting and great. Buckle up folks! We're in this fight together, and we can only win it if we stay together and love each other. This talk was given on August 11, 2024 from Seattle, Washington.www.facebook.com/revolutionchurchmnwww.revolutionchurch.com/donatewww.youtube.com/revolutionbroadcasting@jaybakker@revolution1994@revolution94 Hosted on Acast. Once Jay Kholos sold the show to various radio stations, it was generally up to those stations to sell the show to sponsors. In New York, The Zero Hour was running on WRVR 106.7-FM. WRVR-FM was initially a public radio station owned and operated by The Riverside Church in New York. It began broadcasting on January 1st, 1961. The Riverside Church, located in Morningside Heights, is an interdenominational, interracial, and international church, and has long been a center of activism and social justice. WRVR was the first station to win a Peabody for its entire programming, in part for its documentary coverage of the civil rights movement in Birmingham in 1963. In addition to religious and philosophical discussions with Riverside clergy and theologians, WRVR programming included addresses by political and cultural leaders, like Indira Gandhi, Aldous Huxley, John F. Kennedy, and Margaret Mead. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his pivotal “Beyond Vietnam” speech at the Riverside Church over WRVR-FM on April 4th, 1967. The station also featured the heralded weekly program Just Jazz with Ed Beach. In September 1971, WRVR went commercial and shifted to a news format, with the exception of Just Jazz, which continued until 1973. By then, WRVR was experimenting with radio drama in both golden age and new time productions. On September 4th, 1973, part two of The Zero Hour's “Wife of the Red-Haired Man” took to the air. Radio legend Mary Jane Croft, who was also the wife of Elliott Lewis, was featured in this episode. Years later, she spoke to SPERDVAC about her radio career and late husband. In September of 1973, WRVR was advertising a World Hockey Association exhibition matchup which featured legends Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull. The New York Raiders and later The Golden Blades were intended to be the upstart WHA's flagship franchise. They were, however, unable to compete with the NHL's New York Rangers and the expansion New York Islanders. After just two seasons, The Golden Blades moved to San Diego. The WHA folded after eight years in 1979 with four teams: The Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques, and Winnipeg Jets, joining the NHL.

Today on Sojourner Truth we bring you our King Day special program paying homage to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's radicalism. Dr. Martin Luther King became increasingly vocal about his views against the war the U.S. was waging at the time– the war in Vietnam. He delivered a speech entitled, “Beyond Vietnam: Time to Break the Silence,” exactly one year before his assassination. Dr. Martin Luther King declared: “A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death.” He went on to name the U.S. government as the greatest purveyor of violence in the world and preached that nonviolent direct action is our greatest hope and the best tool to bring about change. Over 54 years later, in this powerful speech, Dr. King provides both a diagnosis and a cure that remains fully relevant today. As the U.S. finds itself encroached in yet another war enabling the continued war between Russia and Ukraine. Today, in partnership with the CA High Desert residents and the CA Poor People's Campaign, Sojourner Truth brings you audio from this public reading of “ Beyond Vietnam.” This event was part of 54 public readings— for each year since Dr. King's assassination— taking place across the state of California. The CA Poor Peoples' Campaign has picked up Dr. King's unfinished work, weaving the interlocking injustices—systemic racism, systemic poverty, environmental devastation, militarism and the war economy and a distorted moral narrative of Christian nationalism—into one “moral fusion” campaign. We hope you'll enjoy this live reading of Martin Luther King's speech "Beyond Vietnam" read by the CA high desert residents honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

(Louisville Vipassana Community) On this 54th anniversary of the killing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the 55th anniversary of his talk, "Beyond Vietnam," at the Riverside Church in New York, we explore the nature of Buddhist practice to transform racism, in the context of examining the nature of awakening in the contemporary world. We start by asking whether we may be undergoing a kind of "Fourth Turning," in which there is emerging an expanded contemporary sense of awakening, which includes the transformation of forms greed, hatred, and delusion not explicitly identified in the traditional understanding of awakening. Answering the question affirmatively, we point to two broad areas of ignorance, related to psychological material, and to social conditioning and institutions. On this basis, we then use the traditional Buddhist framework of training in wisdom, meditation, and ethics (and action) to give a preliminary account of a Buddhist approach to transforming racism. From a wisdom perspective, we look particularly at the Buddha's response to the caste system, and his sense of caste divisions as arbitrary (and empty) constructions, followed by looking closely at the constructions of whiteness, blackness, and race in the colonies in the 17th century, linked with greed and the strategy of divide-and-conquer, which have been central to maintaining racism since then. We then look more briefly at the nature of meditative and ethical training in the transformation of racism. A discussion period follows the talk.

Dr King declared eternal hostility to poverty, to racism and to militarism yet they all remain huge problems for our world 54 years later. Our guests share the importance of voting rights, the principle of unity and the primacy of taking personal responsibility in life both in pursuit of happiness and pursuing truth and accountability of our government's prejudice on behalf of the wealthy as ‘extreme materialism' has given some people much more power than one person one vote. Dr King called out our foreign policy militarism and poverty as indicators that made us the greatest purveyors of violence. Yet few see that this reality continues until today and instead do we project this reality on other countries we claim are our enemies? Dr King implored us to seek and gain the humility to see United States foreign policy through the eyes and experiences of the majority populations in the countries we have intervened in and suggests we must be seen as ‘strange liberators.' This show is dedicated to the lessons of Dr King that are largely ignored by our cultural despite our celebration of his legacy each year. This past week former Attorney General Ramsey Clark passed away. During his tenure as Attorney General of the United States from 1967-1969 under LBJ, he was instrumental in promoting voting rights for African Americans, school desegregation and drafted the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1968, (Fair Housing Act. As the most progressive Attorney General in U.S. history, his world view evolved rapidly as a result of revelations regarding the Vietnam War, and he became one of our greatest antiwar activists. We highlight a speech in which he claims the most powerfully true words that Dr King ever said was that the US “was the greatest purveyor of violence in the world”. He believed that to still be the case right up to his death. We critically examine that and other words of MLK's Beyond Vietnam speech. In the show's introduction. The primary focus of the show is a detailed analysis and historical account of and on the 60th anniversary of the April 1961 US Bay of Pigs invasion and defeat, the first defeat in the long history of US invasion interventions in the western hemisphere. The Bay of Pigs history we have been influenced by comes mainly from US foreign policy perspective that is often spoken from the veterans of the invasion force. It often claims it was the failure of promised air support from US that was decisive in the defeat. But what is ignored is that the overwhelming Cuban ‘public opinion' then as is true today is that the majority population of Cuba supports the Cuban Model. It begs the question with regard to the “Cuban opposition' to the Cuban government, Without U.S. Funding Would There Be Anything to Fund? We show tonight the reductionist ahistorical representation that the US failed air support argument suggests. I travelled to Cuba a half dozen times and visited the Bay of Pigs 4-5 times during the last 20 years. I befriended Cubans including ones that were present at the Bay of Pigs during the invasion. Researching this subject over the last 20 years or so reveals an amazing story about the Cuban Revolution that we have been indoctrinated to largely be ignorant of. Check out this BLID show tonight for a honest and comprehensive rendition of that history and the war heroes that span form citizen militias to Fidel Castro himself.

On this Dr. Martin Luther King Jr holiday in the United States Omar Moore remembers and tributes America's prophet of peace and justice with two tremendously important contributions from Dr. King, both in the month of April. One, in April 1963 (“Letter From Birmingham Jail”), the other in April 1967 (“Beyond Vietnam: A Time To Break Silence”). Omar reads excerpts from one and plays audio excerpts of the other, and opines on what we must do to move forward toward Dr. King's pursuit of justice. Also: Concern deepens about the safety and wisdom of an open inauguration in this current violent and terrorist climate in the U.S., particularly with last night's Associated Press story about defense officials expressing worry about a possible inside attack on the ceremony by National Guard, 25,000 of whom are at the Capitol and most of which are armed. Today is January 31st, and also the day after our state of the union. And last night, we had a lot of applauding when it was said that we need to "rebuild our military". But Martin Luther King said it best in his “Beyond Vietnam” speech in 1967: "The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today (is) my own government." You fast forward over 50 years later and this remains true. But why? In this episode we're going to talk about why we are considered the world police, how the military industrial complex has a hold on washington DC, and the cost of all these wars.

In this podcast episode, we feature Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King’s A Time to Break Silence speech on April 4, 1967 in New York City. While many have listened to Dr. King’s I Have a Dream speech, fewer have considered his words in A Time to Break Silence. He embraced his concern for both the welfare of the African-American soldiers who most often were on the front lines of battle, but also for the poor in Vietnam. Dr. King was one of the few national leaders who correctly understood the struggle in Vietnam was not between Communism and democracy, rather a long battle against French imperialism that had dominated the region for hundreds of years. The fear of the Cold War between the U.S. and Russia had spilled into Southeast Asia where it did not belong. Dr. King saw how the Vietnam conflict was both destroying our own country as well as that of the poor in Vietnam. This was not a universally popular speech among the American people. Time has revealed the wisdom of Dr. King who not only spoke of advancing civil rights in America, but also serving as peacemakers here on earth with all people.

January 15, 2017. “A Tale of Two Stories,” The Rev. Leon Dunkley. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness. . . .” Charles Dickens wrote these words in 1859—the same year that Charles Darwin put forward his theory of evolution, and the same year that John Brown famously or infamously raided Harper’s Ferry. The shape of American history depends on how we tell the story. Fifty years ago, in 1967, Martin Luther King told a story of war in an address that he delivered in New York City. Beyond Vietnam, the address that he delivered on April 4th of 1967 is regarded as King’s highest achievement as well as his most costly mistake. Have we gained in these five decades the perspective that we need to determine which one of these is true?

You’ll hear from Dr. Vincent Harding, Professor of Religion and Social Transformation at Illiff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado and a personal friend and speech writing colleague of Dr. King in the 1960’s. Also mixed into our program, you’ll hear Dr. Clayborne Carson, who at Coretta Scott King’s request, has been directing the King Papers Project since 1985. Dr. Carson established the Martin Luther King, Jr., Research and Education Institute at Stanford University in 2005. The speeches these scholars chose were… King’s last address, the night before his assassination in Memphis in April, 1968. Also, the speech he made a year to the day before he was killed, called “Beyond Vietnam,” in which Dr. King came out publicly and explicitly in opposition to the Vietnam War. And from March of 1965, Dr. King’s remarks that he made at the conclusion of the Selma to Montgomery marches, considered a turning point in the struggle for Voting Rights and equality for African Americans.

Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. is best known for his "I Have a Dream" speech, but his "Beyond Vietnam" speech from April 4th, 1967 is my personal favorite.  He was killed exactly a year to the day after delivering this speech. [Click to Listen]

In honor of the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday on January 16, I am airing a re-broadcast of Dr. King's speech entitled Beyond Vietnam. Though most of the focus on Dr. King at this time of year is on his "I have a Dream" speech, I feel this is Dr. King's most powerful and provacative speech, yet it is seldom heard. Why is that???? The speech was delivered on April 4, 1967 at Riverside Church in New York city, and ironically was given one year to the day before Dr. King was assasinated. He was 39 years old. The speech is even more important today as the parallel is strikingly similar between Vietnam and our current war on "Terror".

The January 11, 2011 edition of Tell Somebody starts out with excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King's 1967 speech Beyond Vietnam where he reminds us that there is such a thing as "too late."  Bannister Federal Complex worker Barbara Rice recalls the results when she started emailing friends and compiling a list of co-workers from the complex who had serious illnesses, and then we hear some audio from a town hall for sick Bannister Federal complex workers and survivors, including comments from Ron Elmlinger of Cold War Soldiers and Donna Hand and Wayne Knox of Cold War Patriots.  Former Kansas City Plant worker Maurice Copeland recalls his work at the weapons plant, and then we hear an excerpt from a Tuscon press conference the day after the shootings at Gabrielle Giffords' "Congress on your corner" town hall. When Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "Beyond Vietnam" speech at the Riverside Church in New York City on April 4, 1967, he was not only laying out a case against the Vietnam War and the negative role the U.S. was playing in the world. No, Dr. King was speaking to us also, in words eerily prophetic about our present day crusade in Iraq and our efforts to thwart democracy in Haiti, Bolivia,
