Andrew and Luke get ready for Thanksgiving by remembering the smell of their grandma's cupboards and taking a COVID test, respectively. They also learn a fascinating detail about Pee-Wee's Big Adventure as they say farewell to the man who played Crazy Larry.
This week, we're replaying our 2014 conversation with Paul Reubens, the man behind Pee-Wee Herman. Pee-Wee is, of course, a beloved character among kids who grew up in the 1980s and 90s. He's the star of Pee-Wee's Playhouse, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure and so many others. Pee-Wee's Playhouse remains a singular achievement in kid's TV. It's a kitschy pastiche of a thousand TV shows that went before it, but it's also much more than that: it's a kaleidoscope of difference, a tribute to the big dreams and big feelings of being a kid. And it's so, so funny. In this interview, Paul tells us about growing up in a circus town, working hard to make Pee-Wee Herman seem real, and why Pee-Wee is a little bit of a jerk — and why that makes him work as a character.

By now, you probably know about Bert's sports jinx. It's so bad that people have given money to Bert's Big Adventure to stop him from attending sporting events. Right before the Atlanta Braves won the World Series, Bert quit doing something. And now fans are BEGGING him to keep it going in hopes that UGA will win the championship this year. After rattling off a few quick mentions such as Breath of the Wild, Alan Wake Remastered, and Sackboy's Big Adventure, we finally take a deeper dive into Inscryption. This game is a card-based deck builder that finds really creative ways of blending with elements of atmospheric horror and escape room design. Nolan has continued his Metal Gear run by jumping into Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker which seems like it may be the strangest entry in the beloved franchise. Of course, we also answer questions from our supporters which leads to some diverse and fun discussions.

Multifaceted British EDM producer Jon Gooch developed his Feed Me moniker in the late 2000s as a vehicle for his dubstep/electro-house hybrid tracks. Working with Deadmau5's Mau5trap imprint, Gooch's tracks of wobbly bass and scattershot drum programming evolved over a nonstop stream of singles, remixes for big-name artists like Robyn, and studio albums like 2013's Calamari Tuesday. Born in Hertfordshire, England, in 1984, Jon Gooch first made a name for himself under the alias Spor, crafting hard-edged drum'n'bass tracks. In 2008, he debuted the Feed Me moniker and a more dubstep-leaning sound on his first track, "The Spell." Still active as Spor (and a handful of other aliases), Gooch's work as Feed Me was largely released on the Deadmau5-run label Mau5trap. His first full-length album, Feed Me's Big Adventure, materialized in 2010, and new tracks came at a steady clip in the form of new singles or EP releases like 2011's To the Stars and 2012's Escape from Electric Mountain. He also increased his profile by remixing the likes of Chase & Status ("Let You Go"), Nero ("Innocence"), Gorillaz ("On Melancholy Hill"), and Robyn ("Call Your Girlfriend"). Calamari Tuesday, his second album, was released in 2013 via Gooch's own Sotto Voce imprint. Over the next four years, he averaged a new EP each year beginning with Feed Me's Psychedelic Journey (2014), followed by A Giant Warrior Descends on Tokyo (2015), Feed Me's Family Reunion (2016), and Feed Me's Existential Crisis (2017). He also collaborated with American producer Kill the Noise on the 2014 single "Far Away." In 2019, third full-length High Street Creeps arrived, this time back on Mau5trap. By this time, Gooch's style had developed from the dubstep trendiness of his earliest work into more varied and quick-changing compositions that included nods to his drum'n'bass background. Welcome to another episode of Don't Be Crazy! Here we discuss and dissect what makes a film (past or present) absolutely amazing or a pile of rubbish. All that we ask of each other is don't be crazy. It's the best bike in the whole world. On this episode we discuss Tim Burton's 1985 directorial debut Pee-Wee's Big Adventure. Paul Reuben's is ridiculously funny in this ambiguous genre laced film. The Green River Game Lands contains just over 18,000 acres of wilderness and lies along the Blue Ridge Escarpment in Henderson and Polk counties. It is home to the Green River which cuts a rugged chasm as it descends the Blue Ridge escarpment providing numerous whitewater sports opportunities like kayaking, canoeing, tubing, and fishing in wild trout waters. At its most impressive point, the Green River drops 400 feet in just over 1.5 miles running through a crevice known as the Narrows, which is full-on Class V savage whitewater. In this episode I sit down with John Grace, Executive Director of the Green Race. We talk about the race's 26-year history, the hugely talented racers, the race's influence on boat design, emerging young paddlers, and the challenges of putting on an extreme event in a relatively remote and rugged wilderness area. We also talk about the Green River Games which is a collection of running, mountain biking and paddling events in the Game Lands that takes place each year in May. And, John shares how he earned the honor of being named a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. We also plug John's Hammer Factor podcast where He, Louis Geltman and John Weld offer listeners an insider's look into the athletes, expeditions, controversies and gear in the sport of whitewater paddling.LINKSThe Green RaceHammer Factor PodcastOutdoor Alliance, Louis GeltmanImmersion Research, John WeldGreen River AdventuresThe Gorge ZiplineH2O DreamsThermal Belt OutreachPisgah Map CompanySaluda Mountain Land TrustGreen River KeeperDaggerLiquid LogicPolk CountyHenderson CountyMike Andress, HostExploration Local PodcastEmail: email@example.comWebsite: https://explorationlocal.com/Instagram: explorationlocalFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/explorationlocal/

As we continue our bold adventure of 2001: A Space Augusty, trekking through all alien content, we talk Mars Attacks! The film was directed by visual maestro of the macabre, Tim Burton (Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Pee-wee's Big Adventure). We talk about his original vision of the film, and his aspirations for a stop motion masterpiece. Writer, Jonathan Gems, wrote not only this film, but also its novelization. He wrote the ill-fated, Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian. The film stars Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Danny Devito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan, Michael J. Fox, Natalie Portman, Jim Brown, Pam Grier, Jack Black, and about 50 other people. Did you know they somehow conned Frank I'm-the-voice-of-every-cartoon-you've-ever-seen-including-Megatron Welker into a booth to yell "Ack!" into a microphone? The original cards were the product of Len Brown, Woody Gelman, and legendary artist, Wally Wood. The franchise started off as a card collectible, but spun off into tons of comic crossovers: Godzilla, The Savage Dragon, Super Sentai Power Rangers, Popeye, Miss Fury, Star Slammers, Ghostbusters, Chew, Madman, Transformers, Spike, Strangers in Paradise, Zombies v. Robots, Rog-2000, Judge Dredd, Dinosaurs Attack, Munchkin, Bojack Horseman, and Red Sonja. Speaking of unsuspected crossovers, did you know how the film overlaps with the works of Howard Stern? Or how about this, did you know Alex Cox tried to get the film made back in the 80's? We also have an in terview with Gwar co-founder, Hunter Jackson, aka "Techno Destructo." We talk about everything from his hot sauce brand, to his pro wrestling career, with tabletop gaming and his hatred of Star Wars in between. Today's guest wrote a lovely, inspiring book called Growing Slow: Lessons on Unhurrying Your Heart from an Accidental Farm Girl. I devoured this book. I experienced the blessed timing of reading this book right after the book from last week's episode with Ginger Stache, Chasing Wonder: Small Steps Toward a Life of Big Adventure…and mamas, if I could recommend reading any two books back to back, it would be these two! In Growing Slow, Jennifer addresses all kinds of issues mamas struggle with and provides so much encouragement for our insecure mama moments when we feel like we're falling behind, or our kids are falling behind, when we're struggling to find time for ourselves…and even big moments when we're looking at our life and realizing this is NOT what we expected or planned. In this conversation, Jennifer reminds us that all the little things are the mattering things. And that it's okay to change. Along with lots of other lovely reminders that will fill your mama heart. Thanks for being here for this joyful conversation. Jennifer's Bio: Jennifer Dukes Lee lives on the fifth-generation Lee family farm in Iowa, where she and her husband are raising crops, pigs, and two beautiful humans. She writes books, loves queso, and enjoys singing too loudly to songs with great harmony. Once upon a time, she didn't believe in Jesus; now he's her CEO. This week was relatively uneventful for our hosts, but that doesn't stop the discussion. From the demonic nature of the loon to bandoleers of beer, life finds a way. On the gaming front Trees has upgraded his DLC in Car Mechanic Simlator, explored Billions Road further, and continues to grind Minecraft Dungeons with his son. This transitions to a dual discussion on Maneater, which Fred has also started this week. Fred also wraps up Cold War, enjoys some retro on the MiSTer, and has a serious fit over the Panzer Dragoon franchise, particularly Orta. It all wraps with some quick words on Sackboy's Big Adventure and the addicting but also slow moving nature of Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
EDT is one year old! Phil and Jake celebrate by ranking podcasts, ranked lists and metatextuality on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to email@example.com (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We don't talk about it in the episode, but we both watched Symbiopsychotaxiplasm, a noteworthy film dealing with metatextuality (though you could get a lot of the same effect from watching YouTube reaction videos or the Bo Burnham video where he reacts to himself). One thing that we enjoyed we enjoyed from Symbiopsychotaxiplasm was when a film crew member says that every husband and wife from the moment of birth are destined to say poorly written cliched banalities at each other and all they want to say is "you're cutting my balls off" and "you're not a real man". Phil mentioned a podcast where you can listen to old Knicks games along with commentary. He has no proof that such a podcast exists, maybe he dreamed it. He's listened to commentary of old games on Knicks Film School but not the actual audio broadcast. He's sure such a thing could exist though. Other podcasts mentioned include This American Life, Planet Money, Radiolab and WTF with Marc Maron. In one scene in Luca, the characters watch Big Deal on Madonna Street. BD on MS is a really influential crime/caper movie. Heist type movies seem like they're all either remakes of this movie or Rififi (which BD on MS itself seems like a response to). TV shows discussed include The Office, Fleabag, Moonlighting, Saturday Night Live, Frasier, Batman: The Animated Series and Watchmen. Songs discussed include “Something to Ride To” & “Freaky Tales” by Too $hort, “We Got the Beat” by The Go-Gos, “1999” by Prince, “The Ghost of Tom Joad” & “Dancing in the Dark” by Bruce Springsteen, “Tulsa Time” by Don Williams, “Hips Don't Lie” by Shakira, “Jackin' for Beats” by Ice Cube, “Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)” by Cinderella, “Whiskey Bent and Hellbound” by Hank Williams, Jr. and “Ramblin' Man” by Hank Williams. We talk a bit about the Grant Morrison run on the comic series Animal Man, Phil remembers issue #5 (“The Coyote Gospel”) where Wile E. Coyote is reimagined as a Christ figure who dies over and over again in our world to redeem his own. Bonkers shit. Jake mentions issue #26 (“Deus Ex Machina”), where Morrison himself appears in the comic. Jake also talks about Morrison's The Invisibles, which he hasn't read, but has heard about it containing some magic where the author trades places with one of the characters. for the record, Phil says that Morrison uses a non-gender binary pronoun but the author's own website uses he / him / his so Jake probably isn't guilty of misgendering. Jorge Luis Borges also dealt extensively with himself as a character. Here's the short piece we mentioned. He's maybe the most meta writer. The idea of Countryman and the Cinematograph seems to be "country people don't know that movies aren't real". The idea of people not knowing movies aren't real is fun, which is probably why so many people-- including your humble hosts-- repeat the probably-urban-legend of people running for cover during early screenings of Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat. In the back of Las Meninas you can see the painter, Diego Velázquez. Phil was trying to remember the Hal Hartley movie Flirt in which the same dialogue is used three different times. He tries to remember the name of this movie a couple times a year but It's kind of boring so it's difficult. Other movies discussed include The Princess Bride, The Truman Show, Deadpool, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Caddyshack, Watchmen, the Star Wars movies, The Matrix, Trading Places, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, the Wayne's World movies, Spaceballs, The Last Starfighter and Howard the Duck. Danny Elfman did not set out to become one of the most prolific film composers in history. He was a distractible kid who couldn’t focus on much of anything except music, loved jazz, loved Stravinsky, taught himself how to read, write and play music, and found himself as the frontman for the band Oingo Boingo for 16 years. But everything changed when a fan named Tim Burton came to Danny and asked if he would score a movie called Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. Danny and Marc talk about all of it, including Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Simpsons and his new solo album, which is his first in 37 years.
