The 260 Journey
When My Opinion And My Reality Are Worlds Apart

Day 241 Today's Reading: Revelation 3 Some time ago, Cindy and I were doing marital counseling for a couple who were struggling in their marriage. I asked a question I always ask in those types of counseling appointments. It is one of reality and judgment, so I can see how clear they are in their thinking. I asked the wife first, “Is there anything you can do to help the marriage? What do you need to stop doing and what do you need to get better in?” “I can't think of anything,” she said. She was basically saying, It's him, not me. She misjudged herself really badly. Today's chapter looks at a church that was in the same boat as this deceived wife. The church of Laodicea was miles apart between their opinion of themselves and the reality of their situation. This is what Jesus tells them: “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God, says this: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. Because you say, ‘I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,' and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:14-17) Paul gave the church at Rome a warning in Romans 12:3. Listen to these words because Laodicea didn't: “Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don't think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us” (Romans 12:3, NLT). The Message says, “Don't misinterpret yourselves.” Now here is the Laodicean church who proudly said, We are rich, wealthy, and need nothing. That's their judgment of themselves. But the only opinion that counts is how God sees us. And in verse 17, we have both reality and opinion. Listen to Jesus' reality: “You do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked.” Wow, can that be any different? Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard couldn't have said it more clearly: “It is so much easier to become a Christian when you aren't one than to become one when you assume you already are.” Nothing is more dangerous than a deceived Christian, especially when the Spirit of truth resides in us. How does my opinion of me match what Jesus assesses me to be? Am I Laodicea far off? Do I believe I'm rich when Jesus says I'm poor? Do I believe I don't need anything when Jesus says I am blind and naked? Here is a great prayer for us to pray every day from David in Psalm 139:23 (MSG): Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I'm about; See for yourself whether I've done anything wrong— then guide me on the road to eternal life. I have learned that a number of factors can put me in the Laodicea category of misjudging myself: When I am not reading the Bible. James 1:23 says the Bible is a mirror. When I read it, I can see the stuff out of place. When I am not praying. Prayer is where God talks and the Spirit convicts. When I am attending church but not being pastored. I have no one speaking to the areas that need to be tweaked and examined. I have surrounded myself with cheerleaders but no truth-tellers. The last thing God says to this church is profound. And I have read it wrong for years. Listen to Jesus: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20). For decades I used to preach on the streets of the inner cities of America, telling people that Jesus stands at the door of our hearts and is knocking today. We just need to let Him in. And I used to use Revelation 3:20 for the sinners. But Revelation 3:20 is not for the sinners. It's for the Christians who have really poor judgment. Jesus is knocking on the door of His own church. But what is Jesus doing on the other side of the door? And how was Laodicea having church without Jesus in the building? That is sobering to consider. And it tells me that it still can happen and is happening. When Jesus is not on the inside, then I become the judge of me. And that is not good. If you hear Jesus knocking, drop everything and answer the door, please.

Apocalypse Explained 208 [3] Therefore he that approaches the Lord, acknowledges Him, and believes in Him, is said to open the door to the Lord, that he may enter in. In Revelation: Behold I stand at the door and knock; if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me (Revelation 3:20). What this means will be told in what follows where this part of the chapter will be explained. Here something shall merely be said about doors or gates, in respect to man, since it is said, "I stand at the door and knock." To man's rational two ways lead, one from heaven, the other from the world. By the way from heaven good is introduced, by the way from the world truth is introduced. So far as the way from heaven is opened with man, so far he is affected by truth and becomes rational, that is, sees truth from the light of truth. But if the way from heaven is shut, man does not become rational; for he does not see truth, and yet it is truth from the light of truth that makes the rational; he can, indeed, reason about truth, and from reasoning or from memory can talk about it; but he is not able to see whether truth is truth. To think well about the Lord and about the neighbor opens the way from heaven; while to think not well about the Lord and to think evil about the neighbor shuts that way. As there are two ways that lead into man, so there are two doorways or gates through which entrance is effected. Through the gate or doorway that is opened from heaven the spiritual affection of truth from the Lord enters, because through that door (as was said above), good enters, and all spiritual affection of truth is from good; but by the gate or doorway that is open from the world all knowledge from the Word and from preaching from the Word enters, since by this way truth enters (as was also said above), for the knowledges from the Word and from preaching therefrom are truths. The spiritual affection of truth joined with such knowledges constitutes man's rational, and enlightens it according to the quality of the truth conjoined to good, and according to the quality of the conjunction.   209. [2] It should be known that there are two principal things of the church, namely, the acknowledgment of the Lord's Divine in His Human, and making the truths from the Word to be of one's life; moreover, no one can be in the one of these unless he is at the same time in the other; for all truths that are made to be of the life are from the Lord, and this is done with those who acknowledge the Divine in His Human. For the Lord flows in with all, as well in the heavens as on the earth, from His Divine Human, and not from the Divine separately. Consequently those who in their thought separate the Divine of the Lord from His Human, and look to the Divine of the Father not as in the Human but as beside it or above it, thus separated from it, receive no influx from the Lord nor thus from heaven, for all who are in the heavens acknowledge the Lord's Divine Human (see concerning this in the work on Heaven and Hell 2-12, 59-72, 78-86. From this it is clear that all truths that are made of the life are from the Lord with those who acknowledge the Divine in His Human, that is the Divine Human. Truths become of the life when man loves them, thus when he wills them and does them, for he who loves, wills and does; in a word, truths are made of the life when man from affection lives according to them. Such truths are from the Lord because the Lord flows into the love with man, and through the love into truths and thus makes them to be of the life.   Arcana Coelesita 5922 [7] Hence also it was that over the tabernacle there appeared a cloud by day and a fire by night, because the tabernacle represented the Divine Human of the Lord, consequently the Divine truth which proceeds from Him, thus the Word which is the Divine truth of the church (see n. 3210, 3439).

The Lord Jesus Christ is completely knowledgeable of the condition of each church and individual within each church. (When was the last time you had a check-up?) In some cases, churches (denominations) as well as individuals have left their first (primary) love. (They need to repent-return!) Suffering is a part of the Christian life. (For most if not all Christians and churches.) We are to faithfully endure, serve, and overcome through the blood of the Lamb. Some churches (denominations) as well as individuals compromise their doctrinal beliefs and teachings with what the world believes and teaches. We are called to be faithful witnesses to God's truth as written in His Word, the Bible. The mission of the church is to exalt the Lord Jesus Christ by leading lost people to Him and teaching them His Word, Way, Truth, and Life.  (Spiritual growth-discipleship) The church is not to become one with the world and its priorities. Many churches have closed their doors or sit empty. The saddest condition is a church that is well attended and is dead! Spiritual life is found in the Lord Jesus Christ. Churches that please God include several Biblical characteristics: The Lord Jesus Christ is loved and worshipped. The Word of God is loved, respected, honored, and proclaimed truthfully. The church is empowered by God the Holy Spirit: In its prayer life In every area of ministry: Understands and works to fulfill the Father's mission to reach the lost and minister to the saved. (Engaged in ministry!) (Not a social club!) Every church and individual Christian must guard against becoming lukewarm.  Success, growth, possessions,   etc., are blessings that can lead to pride and apathy! (Laodicea) Give your heart, life, past, present, and future to the Lord Jesus Christ today and be forgiven, restored, and saved. God promises His Paradise for those who love Him.   Donations We are accepting offerings via our church website. This morning I woke suddenly out of a deep sleep. In my dream, I heard one loud knock on the door. The visitor didn't knock twice or in series. Just once—loud and clear. Then I awoke. The knock came from someone expecting to be heard. I knew it was the Lord waking me up, so I got up immediately and began to pray and seek Him. I sensed He had something specific to say about that knock. Was it a message to me? Was it a message to His people? Was it a message to unbelievers? Was it a message to everyone? Suddenly the light came on, unlocking the mystery. The Holy Spirit reminded me of Revelation 3:20: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. Jesus Himself is described as One who doesn’t barge into people’s lives but who stands at the door and knocks. He said, “If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20). But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Then Saul took his own sword and fell upon it. (1 Samuel 31:4) Saul's Suicide Death with dignity. That's been the great cry of those seeking to make euthanasia legal in more places. We don't want people to suffer. That's quite true. So let's make sure they don't have to suffer and kill them right now. That's Saul's predicament as he faces a terrible defeat at the hands of the Philistines. His three sons. The great majority of his army. All dead. Just he and his armor-bearer left. They took their own lives so that the Philistines wouldn't. The next day, the Philistines took the bodies of Saul and his sons and put them up as shrines in their temples. Suicide is a very touchy subject. It seems that many find that to be their only escape from a rough life. There have been recent suicides in the area. I had three high school classmates commit suicide as sophomores. The unbearable pain just won't go away. Job felt the same thing. His wife even told him, "Curse God and die" (2:9). He suffered about as much, if not more, than any other human being has other than Jesus Christ. And He was the first to receive death with dignity. He rose from the dead. Death could not keep him trapped in the tomb. And Jesus promises the same thing to you. If you believe that Jesus died and rose for your sins, you too will die with dignity knowing that you will be raised from the dead to live in Heaven with Him forever. Saul never turned back to God. God had abandoned him so he abandoned God. That's was Saul's big mistake: shutting God out of his life. Don't do that. Jesus says, "I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me" (Revelation 3:20). Is your door closed? Open it and let God come in today. Amen.

(Mark 14:14) "Where is My Guest Room?" In preparation for the Feast, Jesus sent two of His disciples to Jerusalem. It was time for Jesus and His disciples to celebrate the Passover. The only problem was location. Where would they celebrate it? Where would Jesus be welcome? Where is Jesus welcome today? he asks the question in the end times to the church in Laodicea: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eath with him, and he with Me" (Revelation 3:20). The pictures given of this verse show Jesus standing outside a house with no knob on the outside of the door. The only way for Jesus to enter is to be brought in from the outside. The question remains: "Where is My guest room?" Is there a guest room open in your heart for Him? Will you let Him celebrate the Passover there? He’s nearing his dying breath when he truly believes that Jesus is the Son of God and the promised Messiah. Many have used this to wait and make “deathbed confessions” to purge a lifetime of sin at the very last moment. The Eagles had one of their greatest hits with “Desperado.” The closing line of the song comes to mind every time I read about the repentant thief: You better let somebody love you, before it’s too late. Jesus tells the church in Laodicea, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20).
