She carries with her a locket and a note from her biological parents -- hoping that someday they will return for her. She and the other girls in the orphanage are living in harsh conditions and endure the cruelty of their alcoholic matron.Life changes for the little orphan girl when a cold-hearted billionaire decides to host an orphan at his mansion for a week to improve his public image. The little girl quickly charms the staff and breaks through the billionaire's tough exterior. Seeing how much she longs for her parents; the billionaire offers a $50,000 reward to find them. A corrupt couple plots to claim the reward by posing as the long-lost parents. After a tense chase and rescue, the villains are caught. The orphan learns her real parents passed away years ago, but she finds a new family when the billionaire officially adopts her. What is the name of this red-headed little orphan girl? Annie! She's adopted by Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks. The plot and songs of the movie are seared into my memory. It's a fine movie. The songs are memorable. But this is why I remember it so well. We didn't go to the movies too often as children. One time my mother took us to the movie theater, my sisters and I got to pick the movie. It was either "Annie" or "Star Wars" -- which was being replayed in the theater that May of 1982. I was outvoted by my two sisters. It's been 44 years. ... I'm almost over it!Today, Jesus talks to us about being "Little Orphan Annies." He's not going to leave us in a dumpy orphanage. He knows we'll feel alone and afraid. He understands that we'll be confused. He is aware that unscrupulous people will try to take advantage of us. He appreciates that we need human and divine relationships. That's why Jesus teaches, "I will not leave you as orphans" (John 14:18).The disciples are gathered in the Upper Room. It's Thursday of Holy Week. The past few weeks, Jesus has been talking about being betrayed, arrested, and put to death. Now he reminds them that we won't be with them much longer. "Dear children, I am going to be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come" (John 13:33). Jesus will soon leave to return to his heavenly Father. The disciples must be filled with all kinds of feelings -- confusion, fear, and anxiety. Much like an orphan. The orphan feels like she is alone. Her parents are gone. There's no one to care for her. Those who are around are untrustworthy and dishonest. We may feel like orphans at times, too. We discussed in our recent Bible study on Artificial Intelligence about how social media connects people instantly and from around the world. Yet, people feel more lonely than almost any time in human history. Roughly 57% of Americans reported feeling lonely in 2024 -- an increase of 46% since 2018. The elderly and middle-aged adults can certainly feel lonely. But it is the young adults ages 18-34 who report the highest-levels of loneliness. Some surveys show up to 79% of Gen Z experiencing these feelings of loneliness. That's because relationships are hard work. Young women have bought into the feminist lie that they are equal to men in every way, so they don't need a man in their life. The women say they want a man who agrees with their thinking. But when they find these men, they are disgusted by them because they're weak, soy boys. Young men have encountered these feminist women and don't want anything to do with them. So, they stay in their parents' basements playing video games and watching porn. Women turn to AI to create a "man" who agrees and affirms them. Men turn to AI to create a "woman" to meet their needs.I told both the teens and adults when we studied AI that I wonder if AI is used in these ways by people who are in stable, healthy relationships with their spouse, children, friends, church, etc. God created humans to be social people. He desires that we desire relationships with others. It's not good for us to be alone -- even if we're introverts who like to be alone.I also wonder if AI is used by people who are in a stable, healthy relationship with their divine God. Jesus promises that his disciples of all ages will not be orphans because he's going to send them the Holy Spirit. Jesus teaches, "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it does not see him or know him. You know him because he stays with you and will be in you" (John 14:16-17).Jesus says he will send the Holy Spirit as "another Counselor." The Greek word translated as "Helper" or "Counselor" is the word "Paraclete." "Paraclete" literally means "someone called to a person's side to help." Up to this point Jesus had been the disciples' counselor/helper. Now the Holy Spirit will assume that role.A Paraclete refers to someone who is needed for admonition, comfort, guidance, and so on. The title was sometimes used for an advocate or defender in court. In my role as pastor, I've served as a Paraclete as both a counselor and an advocate. After a couple had their children removed by Social Services, I counseled the couple on their biblical roles as husband, wife, and parents. Then I served as the advocate in the courtroom. I also spoke with the judge in his private chamber on behalf of the parents to get their children back.John records Jesus' words about the Holy Spirit being our Paraclete in the Upper Room. John later uses that word Paraclete in his Epistle. John writes, "My children, I write these things to you so that you will not sin. If anyone does sin, we have an Advocate before the Father: Jesus Christ, the Righteous One" (1 John 2:1). In this verse, Jesus is our Paraclete. He is our Advocate before the Father, pleading our case for forgiveness by his blood before the throne of God. In John's Gospel, the Holy Spirit is our Counselor or Advocate, pleading God's case to human hearts, bringing them to faith. Here Jesus is promising to send the Holy Spirit. This was fulfilled in a special way on Pentecost in Acts 2. We'll hear about the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost in two weeks. The Holy Spirit comes to create a relationship with us and our heavenly Father. By nature, we are separated from God. The Holy Spirit reunites and reconciles us through the waters of Baptism. John's fellow disciple, Peter, writes in today's Epistle lesson, "In this ark a few, that is, eight souls, were saved by water. And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you―not the removal of dirt from the body but the guarantee of a good conscience before God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 3:20-21). When we are feeling like orphans, we remember that the Holy Spirit has brought us into God's holy family through Baptism. We are now children of God through water and the Word.Being a part of this divine family means that the people around you are your brothers and sisters in Christ. You are never alone because you have others who are just like you -- people who are at times lost, alone, confused, and afraid -- that you are called on to love, comfort, console, and counsel. At other times, you are the one who feels like an orphan. Your Christian brothers and sisters can be the ones fulfilling Christ's command, "If you love me, hold on to my commands" (John 14:15).Jesus sends the Holy Spirit, so you don't feel like orphans. Jesus also gives you himself to keep you out of the spiritual orphanage. He teaches, "I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will see me no longer, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. The one who has my commands and holds on to them is the one who loves me. And the one who loves me will be loved by my Father. I too will love him and show myself to him" (John 14:18-21).Orphans are left alone. Like Little Orphan Annie until Daddy Warbucks comes to adopt her. Jesus promises that although the unbelieving world will not see him again, his disciples will see him when he comes to them. He will come visibly and physically on the Last Day. But as Lutherans, we also believe that he comes to us invisibly and humbly through the Means of Grace of Word and Sacraments. We are confused by a world that doesn't know what a woman is. We hear Jesus' voice speaking clearly, "From the beginning of creation, God made them male and female" (Mark 10:6). We are angered by a culture of death that celebrates the slaughter of the unborn. We hear Jesus' voice speak clearly through his psalmist, "For you created my inner organs. You wove me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made" (Psalm 139:13-14). We are disheartened by a society that discards the elderly and dying. We hear Jesus' voice speak clearly in his Levitical laws, "You must rise in the presence of gray hair and show respect in the presence of an elder, so that you fear your God. I am the Lord" (Leviticus 19:32).Because we oppose fundamental cultural doctrines like transgenderism, abortion, and euthanasia, the world will oppose us. This will make us even lonelier and more afraid. But Jesus says the world will always oppose us, "He is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it does not see him or know him. You know him because he stays with you and will be in you" (John 14:17). The unbelieving world will not -- and cannot -- receive the Spirit. The world will not see Jesus after he leaves, so they will oppose Jesus, his followers, and his teachings. Jesus' disciples of all ages will continue to see and hear Jesus with the eyes and ears of faith. The disciples will know that Jesus and the Father are one; they will keep Jesus' commands; and live. The world will not enjoy any of these blessings. Not only does Jesus promise that he will come to be with us so we are not alone as orphans. He also promises to take us to be with him in heaven for eternity, so we will never be alone. He promises, "Because I live, you also will live."What a blessing last week to witness the baptisms of Maggie and her dad, Austin. Maggie was so excited to be baptized that she couldn't stand still. She and her dad were given the gift of faith and life in Baptism.A few days ago, Doris Miller was called to her eternal life with Jesus. As a baptized child of God for over nine decades, she has received the promised inheritance given to her through Jesus' Jordan River Baptism, his perfect substitutionary life, his redeeming sacrifice on the cross, and his return to life from the grave. Doris is not alone! She was surrounded by her family as she died. She is now surrounded by her husband, Bob, and all God's baptized and believing saints as she lives. Together, they are all gathered around Christ's heavenly throne.Jesus promises, "Because I live, you also will live." Jesus is life, that state of blessed holiness and perfect righteousness that is communion with God. Humanity had lost that life in Adam's fall. Sin and death rushed into the vacuum left behind. The Son of God, the Lord of Life, came to bring it back. Because he is alive, we, too, will live in blessedness and holiness forever. Because Jesus lives, we will also live.We are children who will never be orphaned. No one is going to be making a musical movie about our lives in the orphanage and being adopted by a billionaire. Rather, God has created the real-life event of him rescuing us from the orphanage of this world and being adopted by the King of Creation. He sends his Son and his Son sends the Holy Spirit as our Paraclete, Advocate, and Counselor. By God's grace, we have been adopted into God's divine family, surrounded by our brothers and sisters in Christ in the Holy Christian Church and right here at Lord of Lords. Amen.
Sometimes we keep count—of wrongs, of hurts, of how many chances someone deserves. Peter did the same, asking Jesus if seven times was enough. But Jesus points us somewhere deeper: not just to more forgiveness, but to a completely different way of living. A way shaped by grace that doesn't run out. In Him, the story is completed—not with limits, but with a sacrifice that covers the whole world. If you are new to Community Church, WELCOME! We would love to get to know you. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father–Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
In Week Two of our Jesus Is King series, Pastor Dustin unpacks a powerful message titled “The Truth About Temptation.” We begin where we left off last week — at the baptism of Jesus. In Matthew 3:17, the Father declares, “This is My beloved Son…” Before Jesus performed miracles or preached to crowds, His identity was affirmed. But immediately after that moment of public declaration, Matthew 4:1 tells us that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Identity is often declared in public, but it is proven in private. In the wilderness, the enemy did not begin by attacking Jesus' strength. He attacked His identity. In Matthew 4:3, Satan says, “If you are the Son of God…” If the enemy can shake your identity, he can shape your behavior. Temptation often starts with questioning who you are and whose you are. Pastor Dustin reminds us that desire itself is real, but it does not define you. After forty days of fasting, Matthew 4:2 says Jesus was hungry. The desire was legitimate. Yet Hebrews 4:15 tells us He was tempted in every way, just as we are, and yet without sin. Desire makes a great servant but a terrible master. The battle of temptation is ultimately decided by the voice you believe. Jesus shows us how to defeat temptation: Fight from identity, not for it. Romans 8:1 declares there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. When you are trying to earn God's love, temptation will always feel stronger than you. But when you stand secure in who you are in Christ, you fight from victory, not for it. Prepare before the battle. Psalm 119:11 says, “Your word I have treasured and stored in my heart, that I may not sin against You.” Jesus did not prepare in the wilderness. He prepared before it. You do not rise to the occasion; you fall to the level of your formation. Name the lie. In John 8:44, Jesus calls Satan the father of lies. When you can identify the lie, you can break its power over your life. Choose obedience over relief. In the wilderness, bread represented immediate relief, but obedience produced lasting freedom. Galatians 5:1 reminds us that Christ has set us free. Freedom comes not from satisfying every desire, but from trusting God in the middle of it. And here is the hope: Hebrews 2:18 tells us that because Jesus suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted. He shared in our humanity, broke the power of the enemy, and freed us from slavery to fear. And 1 John 2:1 reminds us that even when we fall, we have an advocate with the Father — Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. Temptation is real. The battle is intense. But Jesus is King — even in the wilderness.
Watch the Devotion Based on Luke 7:1-10 Under Authority: The Word That Saves A Soldier needed a chaplain, so he sent for a Jewish rabbi. This might have made sense if the Soldier was Jewish, but he was not. When the officer's messengers reached the rabbi they pleaded with him, “This man deserves to have you come immediately. One of his subordinates is very sick and about to die. You need to come with us now!” The Jewish rabbi went with them. While he was on his way the rabbi was met by friends of the Soldier. They said, “Rabbi, the captain wanted us to share this message, ‘I am not worthy to have you set foot in my home. But I am a man of authority, and I understand the chain of command. I give a Soldier an order and he gets after it. I know who you are. I know your authority supersedes my authority. All you need to do is say a word and my subordinate will be saved.” The rabbi was speechless. He said to those around him, “I have not found faith like this in all of the places I have traveled.” The friends rushed back to the home of the Roman centurion and found his servant completely restored to full strength. A Soldier needed a chaplain and he sent for a Jewish rabbi. This Roman centurion knew and believed that this rabbi was not just a rabbi, but the Son of God, Jesus, who came to save him. Jesus came not just to restore the servant's health, but to save his life for eternity. This is what Jesus does. He saves through his words. This week we observe Four Chaplains Day, to honor the service and sacrifice of four US Army chaplains who gave up their own lifejackets to fellow Soldiers as the Dorchester sank into the icy waters of the Atlantic on February 3rd, 1943. In a similar way, Jesus saves. He still carries out his work of saving. He does this by wearing the mask of chaplains. When chaplains open their mouths to speak a word from Jesus to you, Jesus saves through that word. When water was poured and Jesus words were spoken over your head, “I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”, Jesus saved you with those words and that water. In baptism he put his name on you, adopted you into his family, saved you from sin, guilt, and the grave. He saved you for a life eternal in heaven after a resurrection from the dead. Jesus opens his mouth to speak: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isaiah 41:10). Jesus saves you from fear and anxiety and despair with those words. Jesus opens his mouth to speak through his Apostle John and says to you, “. . . If anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:1-2). You are part of the world. You are someone for whom Jesus sacrificed himself to save. Take a moment today to pause and thank God for chaplains – those who serve in our nation's military, but also those who serve first responders, EMS, firefighters, police, in hospice care facilities, in hospitals, in schools and corporations, and those who serve the incarcerated. Chaplains serves as faithful masks of God. When they open their mouths to speak the words of Jesus, Jesus saves through his words. His words save you. Prayer: All-holy, all-loving God, provide workers for your harvest field, both inside and outside the walls of the church, so that more may hear the story of your everlasting love and your desire that all sinners be saved; through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Savior. 1 John 2:1-6 NCV [1] My dear children, I write this letter to you so you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have a helper in the presence of the Father—Jesus Christ, the One who does what is right. [2] He died in our place to take away our sins, and not only our sins but the sins of all people. [3] We can be sure that we know God if we obey his commands. [4] Anyone who says, “I know God,” but does not obey God's commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. [5] But if someone obeys God's teaching, then in that person God's love has truly reached its goal. This is how we can be sure we are living in God: [6] Whoever says that he lives in God must live as Jesus lived. https://bible.com/bible/105/1jn.2.1-6.NCV

Welcome to Day 2699 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2699 – “A Clean Life – Wise Words From a Family Meeting.” - 1 John 2:1-11 Putnam Church Message – 08/17/2025 Sermon Series: 1, 2, & 3 John “A Clean Life – Wise Words From a Family Meeting.” Last week, we explored 1 John 1:5-10 with the focus of “God's Light and Our Blight.” This week, we continue through the letter of 1 John, and we will cover 1 John 2:1-11 as we explore how to live a ‘Clean Life' with “Wise Words from a Family Meeting.” Let's read 1 John 2:1-11 from the NIV, which is found on page 1899 of your Pew Bibles. 1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers 3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word,/love for God[a] is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister[b] is still in the darkness. 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister[c] lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. Some are large, focused on several themes treated in a logical, linear manner. Others are small, narrowing in on one particular topic. The book of 1 John is a moderately long letter and follows a meandering path around several themes that are on...

Teacher: Dave BrownThis is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is nodarkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie anddo not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship withone another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be withoutsin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and justand will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have notsinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. My dear children, I write this toyou so that you will not sin. I'm examining the names—or titles—of Jesus that we can claim for whatever need we're facing. For example, did you know Jesus is your heavenly Advocate? My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One (1 John 2:1). An advocate is someone who supports you, who pleads on your behalf. What an incredible truth as believers in Jesus Christ. We can claim this name of Jesus, that he is our Advocate with the Father. Scripture tells us Jesus is seated at the right hand of God's throne, and he is there to intercede for you, to plead on your behalf. That means you have the privilege of going right to God's throne in prayer, and Jesus is there to plead your case. The Bible tells us Satan is accusing us night and day before the Father (Revelations 12:10). Do you get the picture here? Satan is accusing you, but Jesus is at the right hand of God advocating for you. It's like a scene from a courtroom, but the verdict is already determined. Satan can accuse all he wants, but he can't win, because we have an Advocate, Jesus Christ. Could it be you are now facing some failure on your part—something you did or said or failed to do that you know was wrong, was sinful? You know you have disobeyed God in some way and your conscience is really bothering you. But what do you do? You go to your Advocate, to Jesus in prayer, and you claim his name—his authority—as your Advocate to plead your case to the Father for forgiveness. Just believe what the Bible says. You have an advocate with the Father when you sin, and Jesus, your Advocate, has all authority given to him in heaven and in earth. Do you think he will win your case for you? You can be totally confident if you confess your sin, your Heavenly Father will forgive you because you come to him through Jesus, your Advocate. Claim the name today of Jesus, your Advocate, and know the freedom that comes through forgiveness and cleansing.

1 John 2:15-16. 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.Gen 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.Legalism vs leniency1 John 3:6 No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.1 John 2:3-6 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.1 John 5:18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them.1 John 1:8-2:2 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. 1 John 1:1-2:2 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. église AB Lausanne ; KJV 1 John 2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. ...
God Is Light & His Son Is Our Advocate [1 John 1]5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. 2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. I. My Life of Testing the Spirits II. 1 John: Truth for Life: Review III. Our Society of Testing A. We need reliable test to find truth. The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him (Proverbs 11:1). B. Test other religions, cults, and new religions, progressive Christianity by Scripture C. We must measure spiritual maturity by testing the spirits. Biblical standard for right judgment. a. False apostles 13 For such people are false apostles, deceitful workers, masquerading as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness (2 Corinthians 11:13-15). b. False teachers (Matthew 7:15-16) Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. c. False angels preaching false gospel (Galatians 1) 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God's curse! d. False doctrines (of demons) The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons (1 Timothy 4:1). IV. We Must Test the Spirits A. Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world (4:1). B. Don't be naïve or gullible—don't be a sucker C. You must test, evaluate, assess, because of counterfeits; counterfeit money; hacking, scammers D. Many false prophets out in the world; not rare, but commonDear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come (1 John 2:18). V. The Standard for the Truth Test (v. 2-3) A. 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world (4:2-3). B. Test by the standard of Jesus Christ, who he is, what he taught 1. Either/or resulting in a pass/fail; no middle ground; no gray zone; no mist, haze, fog or bog. Not grading on a curve. It is a categorical test; a universal test; and a necessary test. 2. Test counterfeit money by knowing the real thing, the genuine—the genuine and authentic Jesus in the Bible 3. Consider five statements in 1 John about Jesus 1. He came as a flesh and blood man who was seen and touched (1 John 1:1-3) 2. “Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:1-2). 3. He appeared to destroy the devil's work (1 John 3:8) 4. Jesus' work of love: “Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters” (1 John 3:16). 5. “He is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20). C. This test is sufficient to identify spirit of error; there are other errors wrought by the spirit of error. Get this one wrong, everything else is wrong. Christological test. D. Two test cases 1. Islam: denies Jesus is God incarnate; denies that he died to atone for our sins. 2. New Age: denies Jesus is the one incarnation, says he was one of many gurus, masters, swamis, yogis, mystics. I wrote two books that addressed this, Revealing the New Age Jesus and Jesus in an Age of Controversy. E. Three tips on testing from a veteran 1. Non-Christian groups may use our vocabulary, but not our dictionary. Know your Bible; ready, study, memorize. 2. Texts out of context are a pretext for error. Satan tempting Jesus in the wilderness (Matthew 4; Luke 4). Know your Bible. 3. If a religious group says it accepts the Bible as a true revelation, but accepts other books as revelations, it will contradict the Bible at key places about Christ and salvation. VI. Overcoming Error by the Spirit of Truth A. Overcoming (v. 4) You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world (4:4) 1. Overcome in what way? Vicarious victory through Christ, crucified and resurrected. They have no authority over you. You are free from their lies. 2. Overcome who? Those “in the world,” fallen cultural, political, religious system. People: false prophets, false apostle, false teachers, demons, angels of light, the Devil, and the spirit of antichrist 3. Overcome how? Through faith in Christ, who is in you a. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it (John 1:4-5). b. “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith” (I John 5:4) VII. Speaking Truth and Listening for Truth (vs. 5-6) 5 They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. A. Test by power within you and the knowledge within you: Confidence. Greater is the Spirit of God in you, Christ in you, than the spirits of error (4:4). B. Ultimate either/or; dichotomy of discourse: Truth of Christ; lies of the spirit of error and its mouthpieces, megaphones, and media C. Spirit of truth and error; not just truth or error philosophically 1. Spirits from the world: “doctrines of demons” “The Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.” (1 Timothy 4:1) 2. Spirit of God and the word of God: “Living and active” word of God (Hebrews 4:12) D. Origin of error “viewpoint of the world” (2:15-17); false assumptions lead to false conclusions; but Christians have the Spirit of truth within us, the risen Christ! E. The test about the spiritual truthfulness of others is not a subjective feeling or whether they seem nice or sincere; it is a doctrinal test. Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the Spirit of Truth (John 14:17; 15:26; 16:13) Discover more Christian podcasts at lifeaudio.com and inquire about advertising opportunities at lifeaudio.com/contact-us.
1 John 1:8-2:28 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. 2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
The person of love who has consented to reveal the love of the Father - Jesus Christ and its enough! To see Salvation is not what you see with your eyes but rather what you see and surrender to with your heart - to consent to the Victory of the love of God revealed in Christ is enough - then, now and always. And that beloved is good news!
Framing Question: What is the plan that Christ has for the church, and why is the ascension important to the plan? The ascension. Is a significant part of the ministry of Jesus Christ and the plan for the church. He gives gifts to men that he might fill all things (Eph 4:8–10) We have an interceding High Priest, who has passed through the heavens (Heb 4:14–16) We have a King who has full authority, and all things are subject to him (angels, authorities, powers) (1 Pet 3:22) We have an Advocate before the Father- Jesus Christ the Righteous (1 Jn 2:1; Rom 8:34) We are citizens of heaven, our lives are hidden with Christ in God who is in heaven (Col:2–3) Jesus sends the Advocate- the Holy Spirit to empower his church (Jn 14:6; 16:7; Lk 24:49). Man now sits enthroned in heaven, whom God has granted all authority (Gen 1:28; Matt 28:18; Eph 1:21–23). Main Idea. After Jesus' ascension, his ministry continues through the church, by the Holy Spirit, to the ends of the earth. Driving Question. How is the ministry of Christ continued? King Jesus Provides Us The Message to Proclaim (vv. 4–8) The Gospel King Jesus Provides The Means to Empower Us (vv. 4–5, 8) The Holy Spirit Apply: Pray for a fresh work of the Spirit. King Jesus Provides Us The Mission to Obey Before He Returns (vv. 9–11) The Great Commission Takeaways. Christ is with you. Repent of complacency and trust the Spirit to help. Commit to letting the Book of Acts change our view of the church. Pray. Be active in the Great Commission.
Second Helping – 4 – Second Help We are Redemption Church in Plano, Tx. My name is Chris Fluitt and I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving! We hope everyone had a great time with family and friends over the last few days. We are in the 4th week of our series called second helping. Second Helping We have talked about a 2nd Kingdom, a 2nd chance, and a 2nd option. Each week we have told you that God favors the second! You do not have to fight for first. The favored spot is putting God first! Today I want to talk about a second help. Second Help It is good to have help.Sometimes I can't do it all on my own.-My strength is not enough.-My wisdom is not enough.-My talent is not enough.-My time is not enough. Wouldn't it be great if we had help? John 14:15 (NIV) “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— Jesus said these words, and He promises ANOTHER ADVOCATE TO HELP YOU… Advocate – paraklētos (Para-Klee-Tas) – Advocate/intercessor who pleads a case before a judge. In the broadest usage it means A HELPER. Jesus promises ANOTHER HELPER. Another? This suggests there is more than one helper. So who are these helpers? John 14:15:17 (NIV) the Spirit of truth. Another paraklētos/helper is the Spirit of Truth - The Holy Spirit is paraklētos. But we have more than one paraklētos… 1 John 2:1 (NIV) My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. Jesus Christ, the righteous one is -there's that word again – paraklētos. Back in John 14 we have Jesus Christ, our advocate, telling us the Father will send another advocate. There is a lot we could say about Jesus and the Holy Spirit, but let's keep it simple. God (Father)God with us (Jesus)God in us (Holy Spirit)This is 1 God, not 3. What I want you to see is how a distant God, separated from us because of sin, has drawn near. The son/Jesus, is God coming nearer to us.The Spirit, is God coming even nearer to us. Comfortable ViewJesus is walking beside you. Jesus is comforting you, healing you, and serving you. Jesus is talking to you.Think about how easy it is to bring others into a relationship with a Jesus who is walking beside you…Come meet Jesus… here he is! (John 4:29 – Come meet a man…) CHRISTIANS ARE REAL COMFORTABLE WITH THIS VIEW. Uncomfortable View The Spirit is living within you.The Spirit is working, empowering, and gifting you to do bold things. The Spirit does supernatural things through you… like prophecy, tongues, healing.Think about how scared you are to bring others into a relationship with the Spirit within you…God (Father)God with us (Jesus)God in us (Holy Spirit It should not be uncomfortable, because it is the same God.It should not be uncomfortable, because it is the same God helping us.It should not be uncomfortable, because it is simply operating by faith. It should not be uncomfortable, because God is drawn so close to us that He is working within us! Many Christians are comfortable talking about Jesus, but they are uncomfortable talking about the Holy Spirit. We seem to forget that Jesus made people uncomfortable, challenged people, and operated in the supernatural. Are you willing to follow God even when it is uncomfortable?Following God in discomfort is good for you.Lifting weights is uncomfortable, but it builds your muscle.Experiencing the God of the Super Natural is what is best for us. It is better for God to be IN YOU than only beside you. John 16:7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. The reason Jesus went away was so God could be IN YOU. Acts 1:8 (NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Series: I JohnConfidence through ObedienceI John 2:3-6; 3:4-10 Being “right with God” is important because you are designed to live in relationship with God and your eternity will be based on this relationship. 3 ways to “know that you know” Theological: You believe the right things.Moral: You strive to keep His commands.Ethical: You love His people. “if we keep His commands” · Is not works-based righteousness · Is not legalism · Is not perfectionism 3 This is how we know that we know him: if we keep his commands. 4 The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn't keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps his word, truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him: 6 The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked.I John 2:3-6 Confidence through Obedience Those who know God value God's Word. Those who know God strive to obey. Those who know God will reflect Jesus through the way they live. Until we get to heaven, we will not overcome the tension of desire and shortfall. Those who keep God's commands have a posture of repentance. My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous one. 2 He himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.I John 2:1-2
This morning we look at the Mercy of God.2 John 1:3Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, will be with us in truth and love.God Shows Compassion to AllPsalm 145:9The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.Romans 5:8-9But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.We Serve a Merciful GodEphesians 2:4-5But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ by grace you have been saved.”God Delights to Show Mercy2 Corinthians 1:3-4Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” Micah 7:18-19Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.Lamentations 3:22-23The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. Christ is Our Merciful & Faithful High PriestHebrews 2:17-18For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. There is Mercy Before God's Throne of GraceHebrews 4:14-16Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.He Has Mercy On Whom He ChoosesRomans 9:15For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”Those Who Confess & Renounce Their Sin Find MercyDaniel 9:9The Lord our God is merciful and forgiving, even though we have rebelled against him.Proverbs 28:13 Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.Asking God for MercyPsalm 51:1-2Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. The New Covenant of God's Grace Romans 8:1-4 (NIV)“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” God's Covenant of Grace has judged you. 1. NOT GUILTY! Romans 8:1 (NIV)“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” Romans 8:23-25 (NIV)“all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith.” 2. Righteous 2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV)“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”Philippians 3:9 (NIV)“[I am] found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. “ 1 John 2:1-2 (NIV)“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” 3. Free from the slavery to sin Romans 8:2 (NIV)“because through Christ Jesus the law of the spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.” Romans 6:23“the wages of sin is death.” No Condemnation When we don't live up to our identity in Christ In marriage problems In parenting struggles In suffering When others try to condemn me Now and forever
I'm talking about the names—or titles—of Jesus that we can claim for whatever need we're facing. For example, did you know that Jesus is your heavenly Advocate? First John 2:1 says: “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.” An advocate is someone who supports you, who pleads on your behalf. What an incredible truth that as believers in Jesus Christ, we can claim this name of Jesus, that he is our Advocate with the Father. Scripture tells us that Jesus is seated at the right hand of God's throne and he is there to intercede for you, to plead on your behalf. That means that you have the privilege of going right to God's throne in prayer, and Jesus is there to plead your case. The Bible tells us that Satan is accusing us night and day before the Father (Revelation 12:10). Do you get the picture here? Satan is accusing you, but Jesus is at the right hand of God advocating for you. It's like a scene from a courtroom, but the verdict is already determined. Satan can accuse all he wants, but he can't win, because we have an Advocate, Jesus Christ. Could it be that you are now facing some failure on your part—something you did or said or failed to do that you know was wrong, was sinful? You know that you have disobeyed God in some way and your conscience is really bothering you. But what do you do? You go to your Advocate, to Jesus in prayer and you claim his name—his authority—as your Advocate to plead your case to the Father for forgiveness. Just believe what the Bible says—you have an advocate with the Father when you sin, and Jesus, your Advocate, has all authority given to him in heaven and in earth. So, do you think he will win your case for you? You can be totally confident that if you confess your sin, your Heavenly Father will forgive you because you come to him through Jesus, your Advocate. So, claim the name today of Jesus, your Advocate, and know the freedom that comes through forgiveness and cleansing.
1 John 2:1-11 New International Version (NIV) 2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers 3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God[a] is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever. With loyalty to my Heavenly Father. 1 John 2:1-2 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. With confidence in my Advocate. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. With the assurance my sins have been atoned for. With grace because their sins have been atoned for.
Today, we'll be looking at 1 John 2:1-2 and identifying the deep and beautiful truths that are immensely applicable and incredibly important to our lives today."My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world." - 1 John 2:1-2We want to be the men God has called us to be. Does a trap spring up from the ground if it has not caught anything? When a trumpet sounds in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the Lord caused it? And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1). The greatness of the Father's love for us is indeed beyond human comprehension. No wonder the Spirit had to pray through Paul for the Church to come to the understanding of the immensity, magnitude and unconditional love of the Father towards us (Ephesians 3:18-19). He sent Jesus to die for us; He raised Him from the dead, and appointed Him as our eternal advocate. Hallelujah! He said in our theme verse, “If anyone sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ the righteous.” No one else qualifies to plead your case, except the one who died in your place; He took your place as a sinner and gave you His righteousness. No one can condemn you before the Father. When Satan, who is described in Scripture as the accuser of God's people, accuses you and tries to make you undeserving of God's blessings, the Lord Jesus, your advocate stands up in your defence. He pleads your case. The Bible says He loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood (Revelation 1:5-6). His blood speaks continually in your behalf, cleansing you from all unrighteousness and every stain of sin (1 John 1:7-9). Jesus did all that He did in order to present you holy, blameless and unreproveable in the sight of God (Colossians 1:22). In heaven, Jesus isn't trying to defend you from the Father's wrath, for the Father Himself loves you (John 16:27). The Father ordained Jesus to be your advocate—counsel for the defence. With Him on your side, it's impossible for you to be defeated or disadvantaged. Hallelujah! Prayer Dear Father, I thank you for your grace, mercy and love by which I live a life of glory, free from sin, guilt and condemnation. Thank you for the blood of Jesus that cleanses me from all unrighteousness, making me holy, unblameable and unreprovable in your sight, in Jesus' Name. Amen. What We Believe Part 3What we believe: Entire Sanctification Over the next few weeks as a church we are going to explore what we believe, a few of the key doctrines and concepts of scripture, that shape our life individually as well as our life together as the Church. Together we want to get a clearer picture of the nature of our faith as the Church of the Nazarene, not just to gain knowledge, but to value the freedom and joy found in living out the way of Jesus of Nazareth. I welcome you to our new teaching series “What we believe” 1 John 1:8-10 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.1 John 2:1My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. Can I just say emphatically today that we believe this? And not only do we believe it's true, we believe we are called to experience it as a part of our walk with Christ.Today in part 3 of our series we will see that we believe in the power of God's grace to enable us to live lives free from the power of sin. Or put more simply, we believe in what's known as Entire Sanctification. From our Articles of Faith We believe that sanctification is the work of God which transforms believers into the likeness of Christ. It is wrought by God's grace through the Holy Spirit in initial sanctification, or regeneration (simultaneous with justification), entire sanctification, and the continued perfecting work of the Holy Spirit culminating in glorification. In glorification we are fully conformed to the image of the Son. We believe that entire sanctification is that act of God, subsequent to regeneration, by which believers are made free from original sin, or depravity, and brought into a state of entire devotement to God, and the holy obedience of love made perfect. It is wrought by the baptism with or infilling of the Holy Spirit, and comprehends in one experience the cleansing of the heart from sin and the abiding, indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, empowering the believer for life and service. Entire sanctification is provided by the blood of Jesus, is wrought instantaneously by grace through faith, preceded by entire consecration; and to this work and state of grace the Holy Spirit bears witness. This experience is also known by various terms representing its different phases, such as “Christian perfection,” “perfect love,” “heart unity,” “the baptism with or infilling of the Holy Spirit,” “the fullness of the blessing,” and “Christian holiness.”We believe that there is a marked distinction between a pure heart and a mature character. The former is obtained in an instant, the result of entire sanctification; the latter is the result of growth in grace. We believe that the grace of entire sanctification includes the divine impulse to grow in grace as a Christlike disciple. However, this impulse must be consciously nurtured, and careful attention given to the requisites and processes of spiritual development and improvement in Christlikeness of character and personality. Without such purposeful endeavor, one's witness may be impaired and the grace itself frustrated and ultimately lost.Participating in the means of grace, especially the fellowship, disciplines, and sacraments of the Church, believers grow in grace and in wholehearted love to God and neighbor.let's pause to clarify some terms.First, what on earth is that thing in our hearts, those desires that sabotage our walk with the Lord? That friends, is our sinful or carnal nature, inherited from our first parents in the garden. It's always opposed to God's will, it's always focused on fulfilling our own desires. It's the motivator or the source of all the sins we commit.Next, what is mean by Sanctification?By definition it is the action of making or declaring something holy. The action or process of being freed from sin or purified. So, for entire sanctification, we believe that by grace, we are purified, and entirely freed from sin.It is in entire sanctification that the carnal nature in our hearts is dealt with by Christ's atoning work on the Cross. We believe that Entire Sanctification is the work of God's grace in our lives that deals with the deep heart condition. In purifying our hearts, we are freed from the power of that nature we have struggled with for so long. Romans 6:10-14 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace. God's grace is leading us to offer all of ourselves to Him, to allow him to purify our hearts, and full us with his holy spirit. In our surrender and his infilling and cleansing presence, we are free from the power of sin. When we finally get to the end of ourselves, tired of the struggle, and we throw our arms up in surrender- That's when God's grace can do his deep work, his filling us to overflowing…Our life, our relationship with Christ will never be the same. You are free from those inward heart desires pulling you away. Free to obey God fully…To be free from there power does not mean we will never make a mistake again. It doesn't mean we live in some state of constant joy or ecstasy, we will still face suffering and challenges. It doesn't eliminate our personality or who we are- in fact, I would argue that fully devoted to God is when we can TRULY be who we are. This experience doesn't automatically make you a mature Christian.- There is a difference between a pure heart and a mature character.- God gives us purity, in an instant- we still have to learn how to live it out.Entire sanctification is a continuing journey. Our surrender is a definite moment in time, but it's also lifestyle of YES to Jesus. The bottom line is this: Yes, you can sin if you want to. But why not choose freedom?
This episode is a Bible study about having faith and believing in the Son of God the Father, Jesus Christ. I also go over how we cannot be conformed by this world or controlled by the devil because as Christians we belong the God the Father and are in Jesus Christ. I pair this with prayer, scripture, and 3 takeaways. Study guide included. Enjoy! For the study guide, join this group and check out the units tab. More Than ConquerorsRomans • July 24, 2022Teacher: Adam Barnett--Romans 8:31 NIVWhat, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:32 NIVHe who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?Kenneth Boa“It is illogical to conceive that God would give his most treasured ‘possession' – His only Son – to secure the salvation of sinners, and then not also give all else that is necessary to bring that salvation to completion.”Romans 8:33-34 NIVWho will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.Col. 2:14 NLTHe cancelled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.1 John 2:1b NIVBut if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.Hebrews 4:14-16 NIVTherefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.Romans 8:35-39 NIVWho shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.Romans 8:37 NIVNo, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.1. In Christ, I am free from any condemnation.2. In Christ, I am obligated to be led by the Spirit.3. In Christ, I am a child of God and a coheir with Christ.4. In Christ, I will be redeemed from this cursed creation.5. In Christ, I am certain of my eternal glorification.
Calling All Paracletes Acts 9:17-31 Paraclete is a Greek word that means “One who comes ____________________” of another. My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an ADVOCATE with the Father – Jesus Christ the Righteous One. -I John 2:1 John 14:16-17 2 Cor. 7:5-7 Believers who ‘came alongside' Saul: I. Ananias and the ________________ Church for a few months V. 17-25 When believers act courageously in spite of their ________________ and fears, it inspires the same in other believers! 2 Corinthians 11:32-33 When other believers stand, do we stand with them? How humbling this must have been for Saul: he was led into Damascus as a blind man and smuggled out like a criminal! -Warren Wiersbe II. Barnabas and the ________________ Church for a few weeks V. 26-29 Barnabas met with Saul, believed him, and brought him to church. They didn't trust Saul, but they did trust Barnabas. Barnabas became the ___________________ to Saul's acceptance in the church. Then after 3 years I did go up to Jerusalem to get to know Cephas, and I stayed with him 15 days. But I didn't see any of the other apostles except James, the Lord's brother…Afterwards, I went to the regions of Syria and Cilicia. I remained personally unknown to the churches in Christ; they simply kept hearing: “He who formerly persecuted us now preaches the faith he once tried to destroy.” And they glorified God because of me. -Galatians 1:18-24 The real action in the church happens throughout the week as mature believers befriend and spend time with new believers! But too often we only hang out with the people we already know, ______________ Peter/Paul type moments! Acts 8:40 The next day we left and came to Caesarea, where we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the Seven, and stayed with him. This man had four virgin daughters who prophesied. -Acts 21:8-9 III. Philip and the __________________ Church for a few days V. 30-31 Undoubtedly there was some forgiving that needed to be done! Can you picture Saul asking Philip to forgive him for being part of the death of his friend? Can you see Philip ______________________ love, forgiveness and fellowship to Saul? What if Ananias, and Barnabas, and Philip and other believers hadn't come alongside of him and invested in him in the few years, the few months, the few days they had together?
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 1:5 - 2:2
Friends of the Rosary: Today, Easter Sunday — Domingo de Resurrección in Spanish — we, the faithful, are called to experience the risen Christ, share it with others, and spread the divine joy in the world. Why is that? What the Resurrection has done for us? Through the Resurrection — the raising of Jesus from the dead by the glory of the Father — Jesus Christ has brought back us to the paradise of the Garden of Eden before Adam and Eve caused irreparable harm with the original sin. The Son of God, through his Cross and Resurrection, repaired the damage, eliminated our slavery to sin, gave us hope, and brought us to a state of eternal joy, in the companionship of the Communion of Saints. With the Resurrection, life has merely changed, not ended up. Our loved ones who recently passed away — my beautiful wife, in my case — are alive in another world. Life is eternal. We know this through the gift of faith. We trust in Jesus and Mary, and today we overjoy the beginning of the 50 days of Easter. Ave Maria! Jesus, I Trust In You! Christian Meditation for A Bigger Life with Pastor Dave Cover
The weird thing about the Christian life is that the more you are walking in the light and the truth of God's word, the more you are aware of your sin. You're more aware that your sinfulness sinks its roots in your life far deeper than you realize. It gets weirder yet when your awareness of your sinfulness actually brings a sense of joy and security in all that God is for you in Jesus. It makes you more secure in your relationship with God when you finally realize it's all based on Jesus being your perfect mediator rather than your having to become more worthy. Personally I have found it to be peace giving and joy giving and gratitude giving to worship God by meditating on and praying through biblical verses about Jesus as my perfect mediator before God. And that's the subject of this episode. In the past few episodes we've discussed three things you have to believe if you want to walk with God: 1. That God's word/promises are true. 2. That he loves you specifically with an abundant infinite steadfast love. 3. And that his will for you ultimately is your good. Your only good. Your better story. These three reasons are why you can trust him completely. (Like this podcast? Leave us a rating so others can find it more easily. Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! 4 Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people; help me when you save them, 5 that I may look upon the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation, that I may glory with your inheritance. 6 Both we and our fathers have sinned; we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness. 7 Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, did not consider [Hebrew: they did not remember] your wondrous works; they did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. 20 They exchanged their glorious God for an image of a bull, which eats grass. 21 They forgot the God who saved them, who had done great things in Egypt. 23 So he said he would destroy them — had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them. 45 For their sake he remembered his covenant, and relented according to the abundance of his steadfast love. Below are some of the New Testament verses discussed in this episode: 1 Timothy 2:5 (NIV) For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus. Hebrews 9:15 (NIV) …Christ is the mediator of a new covenant… 1 Corinthians 6:11 NIV …You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 John 1:5 - 2:2 (NIV) This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.
