The first three years of life are a critical time for brain development. We know that learning begins before birth and according to the K-State Extension fact sheet, Early Literacy: Building the Foundation for Lifelong Learning, brain growth is rapid in those first three years, and language and literacy is a piece of that puzzle. The family and consumer wellness agent in Extension's Cottonwood District, Monique Koerner, and Central Kansas District family and consumer wellness agent, Lisa Newman, discuss the key early literacy milestones and what parents and caregivers can do to support early language development. Sound Living is a weekly public affairs program addressing issues related to families and consumers. It is hosted by Jeff Wichman. Each episode shares the expertise of K-State specialists in fields such as child nutrition, food safety, adult development and aging, youth development, family resource management, physical fitness and more. Is technology the source or salve of social isolation? Given the realities of increasing division, the epidemic of loneliness, and unwanted isolation today, how should we think about the theological, ethical, and spiritual dimensions of the human experience of aloneness?“AI technologies aren't capable of creating conditions in which grace can happen—it's endemic to personhood.”This episode is part 3 of a 5-part series, SOLO, which explores the theological, moral, and psychological dimensions of loneliness, solitude, and being alone. In this episode, sociologist Felicia Wu Song joins Macie Bridge to discuss the sociology of solitude, loneliness, and isolation, framed by today's most pressing technological challenges.Drawing from her work on digital culture and AI, Song distinguishes between isolation, loneliness, and generative solitude—what she calls “positive aloneness.” She explores how technology both connects and disconnects us, what's lost when care becomes automated, and why the human face-to-face encounter remains vital for grace and dignity. Together they consider the allure of AI companionship, the “better-than-nothing” argument, and the church's local, embodied role in a digitized age. Song invites listeners to rediscover curiosity, self-reflection, and the spiritual discipline of solitude as essential practices for recovering our humanity amid the noise of the crowd.Helpful Links and ResourcesFelicia Wu Song, Restless Devices: Recovering Personhood, Presence, and Place in the Digital Age — https://www.ivpress.com/restless-devicesAllison Pugh, The Last Human Job: The Work of Connecting in a Disconnected World — https://press.princeton.edu/books/hardcover/9780691240817/the-last-human-jobDavid Whyte, “Solace: The Art of Asking the Beautiful Question” — https://www.amazon.com/Solace-Art-Asking-Beautiful-Question/dp/1932887377Sherry Turkle, Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other — https://www.sherryturkle.com/alone-togetherEpisode Highlights“Even though I study technology, I'm really interested in what it means to be human.”“What happens when we have technologies that always bring the crowd? The crowd is always with us all the time.”“Loneliness is the gap between what I think I should have and what I actually have.”“AI technologies aren't capable of creating conditions in which grace can happen—it's endemic to personhood.”“We should cut ourselves a lot of slack. Feeling lonely is very human. It doesn't mean something's wrong with me.”About Felicia Wu SongFelicia Wu Song is a sociologist, writer, and speaker, and was Professor of Sociology at Westmont College for many years. She is author of Restless Devices: Recovering Personhood, Presence, and Place in the Digital Age. Her research examines digital technology, culture, and Christian formation, exploring how contemporary media ecosystems shape our social and spiritual lives. Dr. Adam Rogers, CEO of NervGen Pharma, highlights the significant unmet medical need for treating spinal cord injuries (SCI), as there are currently no approved pharmacological treatments to promote repair. The science behind this neurotrauma company's drug is designed to interfere with the inhibitory molecules that prevent neurons from regenerating after injury, allowing the nervous system to repair itself. Recent trials have shown success in patients with chronic SCI, indicating that it is possible to promote recovery long after initial damage occurs.. Adam explains, "Our mission at NervGen is to improve the lives of individuals with spinal cord injury. And there are roughly 310,000 individuals with spinal cord injury in the United States, and about 18,000, roughly 18,500 new cases per year. And it's such a difficult injury to treat because, other than largely exercise and physical therapy, there are absolutely no approved pharmacologic treatments that promote functional repair for individuals who have suffered a spinal cord injury." "I'm a physician by training. I practiced for nearly 20 years, and in the medical world, we have always been taught that when a neuron is damaged, as occurs in spinal cord injury, the neuron becomes dystrophic and cannot regenerate. So the medical community has always believed, and I was taught this and even in my practice, that once you have a damaged neuron, that neuron is dead. The problem that we have to solve here is really twofold. Number one, are neurons still viable after a central nervous system (CNS) injury? And number two, if the neuron is viable, how can we get that neuron to sprout, remyelinate, and regrow so that we can gain some function in the end organ that that neuron is supposed to innervate? NervGen's scientific founder, the late Dr. Jerry Silver, dedicated his entire career to understanding what prevented the central nervous system from repairing itself." #NervGenPharma #SpinalCordInjury #RegenerativeMedicine #NeuroTrauma nervgen.com Listen to the podcast here

This week on the podcast, Joanne welcomes Brandie, the Suburban Gardenista, an avid gardener passionate about supporting pollinators with native plants. Brandie is Pollinator Stewardship Certified by Pollinator Partnership Canada and loves sharing her learnings through podcasts, workshops, and social media. You can find her online on YouTube and Instagram @thesuburbangardenista. Brandie's Gardening Journey Began gardening ~20 years ago after moving into a home with no plants Inspired by her mother's lush gardens Discovered native plants through growing Obedient Plant — her "gateway" plant Realized the importance of planting natives to support local ecosystems and pollinators Certified through Pollinator Partnership Canada (Pollinator Stewardship Certification) Shares gardening insights via YouTube, Instagram, and workshops Native vs. Non-Native Plants Native plants provide critical support for specialist pollinators (those reliant on specific species) Non-natives mainly support generalist pollinators Balance between natives, non-natives, and invasives is key Common aggressive natives: Canada Anemone, Obedient Plant, Common Milkweed Alternatives like Butterfly Milkweed and Swamp Milkweed are more contained Managing Aggressive or Invasive Species Important to research before planting Remove known invasives such as English Ivy, Vinca/Periwinkle, Lily of the Valley Learn plant behaviour (spreading, seeding, etc.) before adding to the garden Designing with Natives in Small Spaces Small gardens can host a wide variety (Brandie has 70+ species) Focus on the right plant, right place, rather than "low maintenance" alone Use design creativity: logs, natural materials, and container plants to fill early gaps Community and Education Shares excess seedlings with neighbours; encourages community planting Label plants with signs to spark curiosity and conversation Promotes pollinator education through advocacy and her YouTube channel Pollinator Partnership Canada Certification The program includes 3 components: Education: 8 in-depth classes Habitat Creation: Build pollinator-supportive space Advocacy: Share learnings through outreach (e.g., YouTube video) Highly recommended by Brandie; new cohorts start in February Includes regional eco-guides and plant-pollinator charts YouTube & Monthly Garden Tours Started in 2020 to document native garden progress Monthly updates show plants' life cycles and seasonal variations Helps gardeners identify seedlings and avoid weeding out young natives Encourages patience and learning through real-life, imperfect gardening videos Key Takeaways Start small—one native plant at a time Do research: focus on scientific names, avoid hybrids if aiming for ecological impact Natives can thrive in containers and urban spaces Real gardens are messy, evolving, and full of learning opportunities Supporting native pollinators starts with curiosity and one plant Brandie's Favourite Natives Obedient Plant (despite its unruly habits) Swamp Milkweed – fragrant and pollinator-friendly Eastern Redbud Tree – long-term vision for beauty and ecosystem support How to Support Pollinators "Start with one plant. Once you see the pollinators arrive, you'll be hooked." Gardening with natives isn't about perfection—it's about participation in the ecosystem. Guest: Tom Dee Guest Bio: Tom began his sales management career over eight years ago, and he is passionate about turning underperforming teams into high-performing, revenue-generating ones. Tom loves using tools like AI-driven sales insights to stay sharp and ahead of the game. His approach to leadership is all about mentorship, making smart decisions, and keeping the focus on the customer, building relationships that last. Key Points: Career Journey Started in sales by accident. Studied TV and radio production at the University of Dayton, but couldn't find work in that field. While waiting tables, he met the president of a copier company who was impressed by his "sales pitch" and hired him. Learned cold calling and sales fundamentals in copier sales. Connected through the Chamber of Commerce to Ryden, where he started as a sales account representative. After two successful years, he was promoted to sales manager despite having no prior management experience. His boss recognized his leadership potential and sales acumen. Has been with Ryden for nine years, discovering his true calling in leadership, mentorship, and sales management. Music and Sales Tom is also a musician and band singer. Believes music and sales share core similarities: both require creativity, persistence, and appreciation of the process, not just the outcome. Says the best salespeople, like musicians, hone their craft over time — success isn't innate; it's developed through discipline and practice. Comparing recording music ("you don't see how many takes it took") to the sales process, the journey matters as much as the final result. Sales Philosophy Rejects the myth of the "born salesperson." Emphasizes that sales success comes from process, practice, and consistency, not innate talent. Says the best reps "get out what they put in". Hard work and repetition pay off. Values creativity, resilience, and self-belief in sales performance. Leadership & Coaching Approach Focuses on individualized coaching to help each rep become "the best version of themselves." Builds on strengths and raises the floor on weaknesses, progress can mean moving from a D to a B, not perfection. Believes in incremental improvement - small, consistent gains lead to big results. Encourages trust-based coaching by explaining the "why" behind feedback. Promotes two team types: · Business Development Reps: Need direction, creativity, and fresh energy. · Account Reps: Need structure, process optimization, and focus on managing existing clients. Overcoming Sales Call Fear Recognizes fear of cold calling as common, "there's no magic wand." The only real solution is repetition and desensitization: pick up the phone, make calls, and learn from experience. Sales managers often act like psychologists, helping reps shift their mindset from "I'm bothering people" to "I'm helping people." Acknowledges that sales isn't for everyone, and that's okay. The Power of Process Process brings structure and rhythm to an unpredictable job. Encourages reps to block time and eliminate distractions during call sessions. Teaches that routine builds confidence and consistency, helping overcome discomfort. Note the moment of breakthrough when reps see results from their effort; that's when confidence clicks. Use of Scripts Provides scripts to new reps, especially since Ryden is in the print industry with its own terminology. Scripts help reps learn the "language" of their customers. Encourages reps to act as if, use scripts as training wheels until they internalize the message and make it their own. "Fake it till you make it… But eventually, you have to make it." Management Philosophy Believes in meeting people where they are, not forcing everyone into one mold. Success comes from helping each rep develop in their own authentic way. Leadership is about guidance, empathy, and helping others grow, not control. Today's Topics: 1, 2, 3, 4) Gospel - Luke 11:47-54 - The Lord said: "Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets whom your fathers killed. Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building. Therefore, the wisdom of God said, 'I will send to them prophets and Apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute' in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood! Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter." When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward Him and to interrogate Him about many things, for they were plotting to catch Him at something He might say.
