I knew it was a controversial topic, but I didn’t think my own family would turn on me and lash out because of my beliefs. As a Christian, there are times when I need to stand up for what is right, and just like countless times before, I was left to stand alone to be ridiculed for my faith in God and His Holy Word… I just didn’t think my own brother would be the one to hurt me the most with his callous words. Often, the wounds cut deeper when it is those closest to us who wield the sword at us. In that moment, instead of finding the comfort and understanding of my family, the harsh reality that my brother was a lost soul began to set in. I wanted to become angry and lash back, but my heart was much too heavy at the thought that he would spend eternity in hell. When we meet opposition regarding sharing our faith, it is very easy to become offended at those who mock or push back; perhaps our first instinct is to turn our backs on them or set it in our heart to never discuss the Lord around them ever again. Instead of bitterness or offense towards those who might not agree with our beliefs, we should have compassion on them because, at one time, before Christ saved us, we too were enemies of God and lost. Even if our unsaved friends and family hurt us, these situations should truly drive us to our knees to pray for our lost loved ones. We have to ask the Lord to help us keep our hearts from resentment or offense that would drive a wedge between us or even tempt us to burn a bridge. The Lord is so faithful to fill us up with love for the unlovable. We, too, were the unlovable ones, but God lavished His love upon the cross. Romans 5 is a powerful chapter in the book of Romans, and in verse 8, we are reminded of God’s great love for us: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8, NASB) Intersecting Faith & Life: God loved us so much that He gave His only Son to die for sinners. Not only should this truth cause us to rejoice in the gift of our own salvation, but it should fill our hearts with so much hope that God’s mercy is available to those whom we love. We have to rest in the Lord’s sovereignty and remember that His ways are higher; No amount of persuasive, articulate words of man’s wisdom can save them - the power of salvation is found in the gospel We have to be careful not to look at our lost loved ones as an argument to win, but a soul that the Lord is more than able to save and rescue from sin and death. If we personally cannot reach them with our words of truth, we can pray that the Lord may bring someone else who could share the gospel with them. Do you long for your family and friends to know God as you do? Does it often feel impossible to get through to them regarding the things of God? Do not lose heart, and continue to pray for their eyes to be opened. Ask the Lord to begin to prepare their heart to receive His grace to believe that Jesus is the only way to true forgiveness and eternal life. God loves them so much because He created them. Let us have hope that those who seem unreachable can be reached by God Almighty. His grace draws sinners to repentance, and if you are a believer, you are living proof of that. No one is too far gone for His arm to rescue! Many of you reading this will know that I consider myself a decent “DIY-er”.  When I'm at the end of a project and think I'm done, I'll take a step back to check-out my work.  Then I'll invite Kathy to share her thoughts.  From time-to-time Kathy helps me see how I could add one more thing that would really finish off the project well, making it even better! Sometimes walking verse-by-verse through a book of the Bible, like we've been doing in Jonah, can be just a little bit like that.  The difference is, in this, GOD calls me back to something I thought I had completed.  HE shows me something I missed that would truly complete the immersion in that part of HIS Holy Word. HE did that this past week! We have entered into a new season, a new year, and hopefully with a renewed mind. The things of the old will not work in this new season. For there is a shift that is taking place, and we must adhere to the Holy Spirit's unctioning. We cannot afford to ignore, overlook, or disregard His voice. We must hearken unto His Holy Word, and embrace His Holy Will. If not, the burden of disobedience will be too great and our reward will be that which we have sown. Yet, there is hope! Hope and confidence that living for Jesus yields abundance in every aspect of our lives. For every day is a blessing, and every opportunity we are given should prompt us to walk the path He has laid before us.

Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me…But when I speak with you, I will open your mouth, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD.' He who will hear, let him hear; and he who will refuse to hear, let him refuse, for they are a rebellious house.” (Ezekiel 3:17, 27)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.One of the most comforting (and also scary) things that it frequently takes pastors a long time to realize is what the Lord God says to Ezekiel: “I will open your mouth and you shall say.” Pastors sometimes get a little squirrely because they can be too concerned about how the people in their charge will hear the Word of the Lord. But that isn't part of this discussion, is it?Pastors speak what has been given them to speak, because they have been charged to do so by the Lord of the Church. Whether or not those with ears want to hear is irrelevant; the Word must be proclaimed so that it may accomplish that for which He sent it forth, as Isaiah says. And this is what the hearers of that proclaimed Word need to hear: “[you] are a rebellious house.” Yes, the people of God, the hearers of His Holy Word, are rebellious, and they don't want to listen. Sound familiar? Ever been a little stubborn about hearing what you needed to hear? That's the Old Adam in you, that is your sinful nature, rebelling against the pure and holy Word of God because it is not pleasant for the dark sin within to be bathed in such holy light.Yet, God the Father gives you a pastor to proclaim His Word to you, whether you want to hear it or not, because you need to hear it. You need to know how much your God and Lord loves you. You need to hear that His Son, Jesus, became flesh for you to live your life, to die your death, to bear your sin, to make you new.It may not be pleasant to hear, and you may not like the fact that you cannot do all of this on your own, but that's how it is. Almighty God does all of the work of saving you through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son. He baptizes you into that death and resurrection, and he grants eternal life to those who trust in that truth. So hear and trust that Word, even if it is difficult.In the Name + of Jesus. We have all had days when anger, frustration, or even fear attacks out of nowhere. Have you ever been quick to assume that it is due to a lack of sleep, being hangry, or any other physical reason? Most of us, when walking into a dark room, immediately begin to run our hand along the wall in search of the light switch. We do this to illuminate the room we're entering because we don't want to crash into furniture and break a precious little toe, or something worse! Often, when characters in cartoons get an idea, a little light bulb appears above their heads. This is an indication that they've had an illuminating thought, shedding light on their circumstances! You and I are meant to have this kind of experience with God's Word. God wants to illuminate His Word for us so we'll know what the Bible means and how its truth fits into our lives. He wants to show us the light switch. He wants us to experience that “ding” of the light coming on as we see a verse in a way we've never seen it before. This week we study the hymn "May God Bestow on Us His Grace" (Hymn 500 in The Lutheran Hymnal), written by Martin Luther in the 1524.     This hymn is a poetic version of Psalm 67 which is often called the Mission Psalm. This hymn, like Psalm 67 is a prayer to God, that God would bless His people and that they in turn would be a witness to the unbelieving world around them. This is a beautiful and very applicable prayer for us in our world still today as fewer people in our lives are Christian then ever before. We are surrounded by opportunities to be a witness to the Savior of all people to the people around us.   This hymn highlights several important truths. First, all of our blessings, both physical and spiritual come from God. He is the giver of all things, and those blessings are to be used for our good, but also for the good of those around us and to God's glory. Second, God's Means of Grace -- the Gospel in Word and Sacrament - are the means by which He gives us His spiritual blessings, which include bringing us to faith, keeping us in the faith, forgives us our sins, and brings us to heaven. When we separate ourselves from His Means of Grace we separate ourselves from God and from His blessings, to our spiritual harm. This hymn is a prayer that God would bless us through His Word and Sacrament and through them equip us to be faithful witness of Jesus and His blessings to the world around us that "the ends of the earth shall fear Him" (Psalm 67:7). As Luther says: "Let all the world praise Him alone; Let solemn awe possess us." May the LORD create such solemn awe in each of us through the hearing of His Holy Word! Join us as we study this hymn which is a fitting and beneficial prayer for us to pray still today!
