Living on PurposePhilippians 1:12-26Message Slides For the bulletin in PDF form, click here. To Live is Christ - Live to advance the Gospel…not myself. - Live for the progress and joy of others. To Die is Gain - Death means being with Christ for those who are in Christ. - Death can be faced confidently for those who are in Christ.Home Church Questions1. In Philippians 1:21, we discover Paul's purpose in life: “to live is Christ.” Most people don't seem to live with this purpose. What are some examples of other purposes for which people live? 2. “To live is Christ” means I live to advance the Gospel . . . not myself (1:12-18). Paul views his current situation as an opportunity to advance the Gospel, even though he is imprisoned. What are some practical next steps you can take to advance the Gospel where God has placed you? 3. All people are longing for meaning and purpose. Why is this? How would you explain to someone that “to live is Christ” is the purpose that will truly bring satisfaction and joy? 4. “To live is Christ” means I live for the progress and joy of others (1:25-26). I experience joy by working for the progress and joy of others. This teaching is counter-intuitive, but we see it throughout the Bible. Why is joy found through working for the joy of others? Have you experienced this? What next steps can you take this week to work for the progress and joy of someone else? 5. Paul says, “to die is gain” (1:21). He is not afraid to think about death and talk about death. Do we think and talk about death a healthy amount and in a healthy way? Why or why not? 6. Paul says “to die is gain” because death means being with Christ for those who are in Christ. We often emphasize that death means escaping the pains of this world. And we often emphasize death means enjoying the benefits of heaven. But we don't often emphasize that death means being with Christ. Why should this be what we emphasize? What does it look like to emphasize this? 7. Paul says “to die is gain” because death can be faced confidently for those who are in Christ. We see Paul's confidence in vv.18-20. What are some reasons we can be confident in the face of death? 8. Are there any conversations you need to have with someone as you think about death? Is there someone in your life who is not confident about facing death? Do you need to have a conversation with someone so that you can become confident about facing death? Why Celebrate Jesus? Discover why we Celebrate Christmas as we journey through the birth of Jesus.
A collection of our weekly sermons from our resident pastors: Dave Lee, Frank Piszczor, and Stan Yee as well as guest pastors and speakers.
As winter approaches, the twinkle of festive lights heralds the season of joy and reflection. In 2024, this season offers an extraordinary convergence, where Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, and Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ, align perfectly on the calendar. Hanukkah, meaning "dedication," commemorates the rededication of the Jewish Temple in 165 BC. The festival's origin lies in the Maccabean Revolt against Hellenistic domination under Antiochus Epiphanes. This revolt led to the miraculous victory and subsequent cleansing of the Temple, commemorated by the lighting of the menorah. Lighting the menorah is a central tradition, where each candle signifies hope, divine presence, and the miraculous sustenance of the Jewish people. The lights are not functional, but symbolic—a reflection of God's enduring presence and an inspiration to live in His light. Christmas marks the incarnation of Jesus, the true Light of the world: God took human form to bring salvation to humankind. It begins with the Advent season—an anticipation of Christ's birth and eventual second coming—and proceeds into the Christmas Day festivity and beyond. From December 25th to January 6th, the "12 Days of Christmas" celebrate significant Christian figures, such as Saint Stephen, John the Evangelist, and the Holy Innocents. These observances call Christians to reflect on faith's steadfast examples and draw inspiration for modern life. So, we invite you to ponder the intersection of light in both traditions. The menorah's glow during Hanukkah parallels the advent candles flickering in Christian homes, together casting away darkness and embodying hope, joy, and divine presence. This confluence also finds roots in the Gospel of John, where Jesus is described celebrating Hanukkah—affirming His identity and mission as the Light of the world. The festival's themes of dedication and light resonate with Jesus' role, drawing believers to reflect on personal dedication as a living temple of the Holy Spirit, meant to illuminate God's glory. In both Hanukkah and Christmas, the invitation to "dedication" runs deeply. Hanukkah celebrates the Temple's rededication; likewise, Christmas calls for personal dedication to faith in Christ for salvation and sanctification. This convergence is an opportunity to rededicate by living out values that reflect the love and light of God. Together, as we light the menorahs and adorn Christmas trees, let us celebrate the connections between Hanukkah and Christmas, cherishing the light that shines through both of these sacred traditions. Happy Hanukkah and Merry Christmas! Don't forget to check out our essential workbook to accompany this study. Stephanie personally created the content to invite you deeper into study. Don't miss out! This past Sunday, our children did a splendid job of acting the Nativity Story followed by message by Sam and Lydia reminding us of the reason why we celebrate Christmas.
The Bible doesn't share the day Christ was born, so how did we land on a day in December? What is the actual story of the nativity scene? Join us for a factual look at the day Jesus was born, and let's explore how Christmas evolved into what it is today in Western culture.
Pastor Morris walks us through the final moments of Jesus' earthly ministry, from the humility of serving His disciples to the breaking of bread, symbolizing His impending sacrifice. As we follow Jesus through His arrest, trial, and ultimate crucifixion, we're reminded of the depth of His love and the cost of our redemption. Mark 14:22-25 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, Take, eat; this is My body. Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many. Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. DescriptionPulpit Guest, Tyler Ballard explores the profound and often challenging concept of finding joy in the midst of sorrow. Avoiding pain can lead to emotional numbness, while embracing our suffering can connect us more deeply with Jesus' own trials and triumphs. Tyler shares insights from John 16, 2 Corinthians 6, and Psalm 56 to guide us through the process of authentic rejoicing, even when life's hardships seem overwhelming. We'll also touch upon the hopeful vision presented in Revelation 21 and the comforting promise of a future free from pain. We have hope of Jesus' enduring presence and victory over suffering, encouraging an honest embrace of both sorrow and joy.Time Stamps:00:00 Stick to God's list: love God, others, yourself.05:54 Rejoice amid sorrow; grief becomes joy.09:34 Acknowledge life's hardships; Jesus permits honesty.10:34 Rejoice as genuine faith, not distraction.16:21 Inability to feel pain shortens lives.17:31 Pain is a blessing enabling awareness and growth.23:01 Jesus bears our shame, bringing heavenly celebration.26:55 Celebrate Jesus' triumph and control over adversity.29:34 God empathizes, overcomes, comforts sorrowful believers.31:23 God brings unshakable joy through Jesus. Pastor Greg reminds us that we need to look to Jesus and remember who He is and why we should Celebrate Him!
The Busses are joined by their friend, Dean Braxton, who learned some marvelous things in Heaven when his body died and he was there for one hour and forty-five minutes. Today he shares something Jesus said to him - that here on Earth, we don't celebrate Him enough. He and the Busses discuss celebrating Jesus individually and as a Body, what we can learn from the Jews about celebrating God, and how partaking in communion often is a beautiful way to celebrate what Jesus did for you. Knowing God is part of the new covenant and having a personal relationship (communion) with Him is to know Him, and to know Him is to celebrate Him.Dean also shares a teaser of what he will be teaching at Global Outpouring on November 2, 2024, a full day seminar on Heavenly Authority.
