The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson is the first Australian feature film with an Indigenous woman writing, directing and performing the lead role. In this episode, Anna Smith interviews the amazing Leah Purcell, who shares how she turned her favourite childhood story into a book, a play and now a film. Leah talks about the differences between the experiences, about working with her partner and about what the film has to say about women and the Indigenous people of Australia. Next, Anna chats to actor-director Kerry Fox, who has starred in many films, including Jane Campion's An Angel At My Table, Little Joe and The Colour Room. Kerry gives her perspective on The Drover's Wife, considering the influence of Jane Campion's work. Meanwhile Anna recommends other feminist westerns to watch, as well as a couple of other new releases. The pair also look ahead to this year's Cannes Film Festival, and Kerry shares her stories of attending Madonna's party with Danny Boyle when attending the festival with the film Shallow Grave. The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson is out in UK and Irish cinemas on May 13th 2022 and is out in Australia now. Robert 'Doc' Wright, a veteran of Antarctic surveying, was there on the ice when the worst happened. He holds within him the complete story of that night—but depleted by the disaster, Wright is no longer able to communicate the truth. Instead, in the wake of the catastrophic expedition, he faces the most daunting adventure of his life: learning a whole new way to be in the world. Meanwhile Anna, his wife, must suddenly scramble to navigate the sharp and unexpected contours of life as a caregiver. From the Booker Prize-longlisted, American Academy of Arts & Letters Award-winning Jon McGregor, this is a novel every bit as mesmerizing as its setting. Tenderly unraveling different notions of heroism through the rippling effects of one extraordinary expedition on an ordinary family, Lean Fall Stand explores the indomitable human impulse to turn our experiences into stories—even when the words may fail us. In this episode, McGregor discusses his work with Julia Phillips. _______________________________________________ Produced by Maddie Gobbo, Lance Morgan, Natalie Freeman, & Michael Kowaleski. Theme: "I Love All My Friends," an unreleased demo by Fragile Gang. Visit https://www.skylightbooks.com/event for future offerings from the Skylight Books Events team.

Tom starts us off talking about a new toy in his arsenal. It’s an adult toy, but not that kind of adult toy. He’s got a new keyboard and mouse that are taking his gaming (and work) to the next level. Meanwhile Anna and Myron have been enjoying the real-life sim called The Division 2: Warlords of New York expansion. Sarcasm aside, The Division 2 really does seem eerily similar to current reality, and has proven a fun distraction from social distancing and indoor confinement. Anna and Myron give the expansion 5 delicious slices of bacon, making it as satisfying as any gaming experience that’s out there. And what could be more fun than killing baddies who are trying to weaponize a deadly contagion? Finally, we discuss other options that expand our playable horizons and allow us to continue to enjoy games with friends remotely, while we self-isolate and do the responsible thing to avoid person-to-person contact. From Tabletopia games that allow us to play board games together (yet apart), to purpose-built games like Dominion Online, and phone games like Lego Legacy, we’ve got a lot to keep us busy and still having fun! Remember to look for all episodes of our podcasts on iTunes, Stitcher, and TuneIn. Make sure to subscribe to the show so you’ll never miss an episode. Also, you can keep up with us on our website: havefunandplay.com. We are constantly thinking about adding new content, so roll the dice and come join us!
